On April 28, 1967, boxing champ Muhammad Ali refused induction in the army, saying: "My conscience won’t let me go shoot my brother or some poor hungry people in the mud for big powerful America."
Ali was convicted two months later, sentenced to 5 years in prison and banned from boxing for 3 years. He appealed and, in 1971, the Supreme Court overturned his conviction.
