I’m a member of a few craft clubs and whenever someone has surplus, we take it to the club and share. I’ve also sewn scraps of interfacing to get the size I need. I’ve even started using my scraps to make birthday/Christmas cards and labels. Yes, it takes time but I enjoy the challenge and my gifts are unique. Great video Whitney, thank-you!
Estate sales are my go to place for sewing supplies and fabric. It really is a great way to save a lot of money because they usually sell it to you for cheap. Thanks for the other tips as well!
Great tips! Ive used most of them myself. One of my favorite things to aquire fabrics for my sewing projects is thrifting all cotton sheets at the salvation army near me. Have repurposed many cute heavier weight table cloths and curtains into shopping bags. Many of my quilts contain thrifted material.
I have never been to an estate sale but I have done the other things you mentioned. I have bags of jeans that my kids have outgrown that I use for projects. I piece together batting and other interfacings. I also use small scraps for pillow stuffing. Thanks for your tips and all your years of knowledge and inspiration.
I actually paid very good money at a craft show one time for a little kit to make my own shrinkydink buttons! you never would’ve known they were shrinkydink! You can color them with sharpies or crayons or even colored pencils depending on what color you are trying to end up with. It’s a lot of fun and you can get a whole punchers with only a 1/8 inch punch or you can use the regular quarter inch punch depending on the size button you’re making. You need to punch the hole before you shrink it! I had never done shrink he dink before I used this kit.
Whitney, thank you for all those super tips! You have a great sewing channel which I have only recently found. I'm making the memory bear you do a tutorial on and I managed to find the vintage McCall pattern on etsy. look forward to your next video. Thanks again. Fiona from Scotland. 😊
I love your tips. I don’t like to throw out fabric or batting scraps. One day I ran out of batting, so I took my batting scraps and spent time zigzagging them together into Frankie-batting, it saved the day. I’ve continued to do that on days I want to sew with no particular project at hand. I have a friend who volunteers at a Humane Society Thrift store. She keeps an eye out for fabric, scraps, zippers, buttons, batting etc for me. Also she lets me know when they have “all clothing items are $1” sales. I’ve found some great fabric that way.
Hi Whitney, really great tips and it seems that I already follow quite all of them. Several of my friends know that I am sewing and I got several bags of denim, shirts, old neck ties (love them! 😍) for free. I also like to look for sewing supplies in what you might call thrift stores. There I sometimes find brand threads spools for 10 or 20 Cents each. And then I buy everything I can get 🙈 My brother is also aware and sometimes sends photos like "I saw that - do you want to have it? They have fabric scraps again today - which one do you like?" 😂 I even taught him the brands he has to look for 😀 Just a fun thing I'll always remember. I also sew batting scraps together and love to use those for pouches. Or use fabrics that I don't like where they are not seen afterwards (interfacing, background/base for piecing etc.) xoxo from Germany Stephanie
Glad you like the tips! I am staying very busy with homeschooling, homesteading, and competitive costuming, so no time for tutorials right now. I do still want to post videos so I'm trying this style for a while. They are quick to film and edit and still offer value to my subscribers while I'm unable to make sewing tutorials (which take many, many hours of planning, filming, and editing).
Love your videos! I too collect 😊. How do you store your excess collection? I have plastic bins, currently in my garage because I just moved and have a much smaller sewing room. 😢
My sewing space is one wall in our bedroom, I used to have an entire sewing room. I store most of my excess in a storage building on our property. It also has our Christmas decorations and some other things in it.
Hi Whitney. Cheryl from Australia here. I'm going to sew scrap pieces together for skirts for my grand daughters. I was going to buy new fabric but I love the dress you have started. Much better idea. Thanks for the tips. I enjoy your channel.
Haha I get that! I'm currently doing Sew Your Stash to make sure I'm working through what I have before getting more. It has been a fun challenge this time around because I've really gotten creative with using curtains and linings for costumes and ugly cotton prints for mock ups.

Glad you like the tips! I love estate sales so much!
Great tips. I’ve been sewing for over 50 years and made many, many ‘scrappy’ projects. Loving your videos. Thanks for sharing.

I love repurposing thrifted linens too! I've made so many things from sheets, tablecloths, and curtains.

Sounds like you do a lot of repurposing. I hope you make it to a estate sale sometime!
Excellent tips. I love sewing with denim!!
I do too!
I used an old towel in place of batting for a small project. Great tips!
Great idea! I have used felt when I knew it was something that wasn't going to need washing.

Awesome! I'm so glad you found my channel. Let me know how your bear turns out.
Thanks for tips…luckily we have a thrift craft store in our area…and I buy jeans from thrift stores for denim projects.

Hi Whitney. Great video. I would love to see the end result of that dress, it looks like it is going to be really cute! Nice to see you!
Thank you! Not sure when I'll get that dress finished, it's on hold until I get some other projects completed.
All great tips …I don’t let my friends and family know I sew because they’ll expect alterations for free so I just thrift my supplies…
Haha good point
🤣🤣🤣😎

Nice suggestions. I really appreciated them.🌺
Glad you liked it!
I am a vintage Singer girl. Im wondering is that a 201 I see? I love mine.
Yes, it is
Go to home interior shops and ask for any discontinued fabric samples
Great tip!
Great ideas Whitney.😁
Thank you!
Also ask your fellow sewing friends if they have what you need and can spare it. Swap items with each other.
Great tip!

@@Whitney_Sews thank you for your response. It really helps me🥰
When you piece together and then cut what you’ve pieced together, how do you secure the ends so the pieces don’t come undone??
Also, thanks for the tips! They’re great!
I just serge or sew a quick straight stitch around the parameter.
I sew my batting pieces together until it is big enough
That's awesome!
I do this too, zigzag stitch them together like a puzzle. It's a great stress reliever for me to spend even just 10 minutes doing it.
@@M-hc9xm I’ve tried that but my batting always winds up puckering where I sewed it together. I’ve tried to use it anyway but it shows thru the back.

1-5 done but I'm at #6-"No more please!"
