We re pleased with our Bexley video on two counts, the number of views it gets and the number of comments, many of them saying similar things to yourself. Likewise no longer living in the suburb, but having happy memories. Your mention of the bridge between the infant and primary school, may well be one of those beautiful memories which should trigger thoughts of their childhood past for many.
Lydham Hall, the historic home in Rockdale but bordering on Bexley, is now open to the public on the first Sunday of the month from 10.00 a.m to 4.00 p.m. It’s a place to wander through as if it is your own home. Coffee/tea with scones jam and cream, on the veranda overlooking the bay, is another popular attraction. The Creator who makes these Facebook videos spends her time there volunteering in the kitchen, whilst the male voice on the videos is me, a fairly informal guide. The organisation responsible being the St. George Historical Society.

Thanks for your comment. We are going through a curiously thin time at present regarding watch hours on our UA-cam videos coupled with few comments. Thankfully we have a few which day after day, give us some hope. Bexley has surprised me, for until we made the video, I was more aware of the shopping strip than anything else. The Creator of the video, has opened my eyes, to the wonderful world of Bexley. I think there may be many, who are nostalgic of a past lived in Bexley, which may explain the goodly number of views our video has. Our present disappointment is with our presentation on North Sydney. Is it for the most part one great office block? We think areas which have been largely taken over by either hospitals or universities are places where people no longer identify with the area. Some of our best performing suburbs are at present, Balmain, Parramatta and To some degree Liverpool. Do you watch any of the videos that but onto Bexley?

This morning we discovered how “fabulous” it is when we looked at the sudden rise in the numbers viewing the Bexley video. This prompts us to think that someone has placed us on a Facebook site not 100 kilometres from Bexley. In that we are not members of Facebook, so it is not our own promotion, we are left wondering why things are as they are. We would appreciate any feedback on the subject.
We are pleased that so many have enjoyed the video on Bexley. I am married to the creator, and am the male voice on the video, I also evaluate the final script as to its readability, and relevance to the pictures. Knowing only a Bexley whose shopping strip has seen better days, I found it to be a repository of hidden gems, as we travelled through the area, and had pointed out to me those jewels. A walk through that Bexley might be worthwhile with it terminating at Lydham Hall, but that will have to be on the back burner until the Hall has finished being renovated. Thanks once again for your encouraging comment.

We may well agree with you, as often, our videos, point out how some buildings have had had several changes as to their use during their lifetime. Cinemas, large homes, churches, and factories, to name but a few. One local authority, will not approve, what we might describe as sympathetic additions to an old building. In spite of the owners willingness to do them. The local authorities preference appears to be a square box addition, which will clearly show that the building is “modern.” Their contribution to heritage values is to retain the outer wall of a single story shop and then have a building several stories high sprouting from it. In fairness there are honourable exceptions, which we will make every effort to discover.

We find it quite remarkable that our video of Bexley has so many views. Are there so many people who lived in or near the suburb who have happy memories of it? There’s an ambiguity about which suburb you are referring to. Is it Bexley or Somewhere in Sydney’s North West. In truth we are inclined to think it is Bexley. What all of our viewers are not telling us, “why is it so so?” Thank you for your comment.

We’ve already made comments on how pleased we are with the number of people watching the Bexley video. The mystery to us is to why can you describe it as “great stuff?” Having your thoughts on what you particularly liked, would contribute to us making our videos more popular. May this comment contribute to others adding to their memories of Bexley.

The number of viewers we have in relation to the present population leads us to think, after reading your previous comment, that many of our viewers like to be remember their youth. This seems to be born out by the great number of our viewers being in the 55 to 65 year bracket, which we find on our UA-cam Analytics. Don't worry we don't know anything personal about you. We have made the assumption that persons may watch the video they live in and then the next suburb, but are now beginning to see that that may not be what is happening. What think you?

@@stpeterscooksriver1873 it is a truth universally acknowledged that the older you get, the more history you’ve absorbed. We are always most interested in our own local history, but as the pool of knowledge gets wider and deeper with age, you find connections joining everything to everything else. So there’s a narrative joining a railway tunnel in Otford to a power station in Pyrmont or a workers cottage in Newcastle. Age, curiosity and plenty of idle hours (haha) brings it all together.

Having grown up in Bexley i found this video excellent.
However no mention of the rifle range before the swimming pool was first built nor any mention of Bexley's quarry.
Still, thankyou for putting this together.

    • @stpeterscooksriver1873
      @stpeterscooksriver1873  2 роки тому

Thanks for your input, and very sensitive comment. We are for obvious reason, of the opinion that, “ a picture is worth a thousand words,” and and we failed in finding pictures of, the quarry and rifle range. Even locating the quarry, from the address in newspapers is challenging. We think it opened in 1921, and initially thought it was the site of the swimming pool. We now think it may have been on the corner of Washington and Verdun Sts. The rifle range opened early in 1940, as I suspect part of the war effort and was part of the quarry. I would have to say that it makes an interesting read in the papers. The thing that truly is magnificent, and deserves more recognition is, not the somewhat tired shopping centre, but the quality of Bexley’s domestic architecture. Of which we have plenty of pictures. We suspect this is one of the reasons why it has so many views, in contrast to more populated or popular areas, e.g. Manly. Please do reply, if you have anything to add or correct.

Great stuff guys, thank you. Plenty of interesting buildings to hunt down on my walks and bike rides around the area. They’re not all top quality, but the diversity of architecture cannot be denied. That’s what makes it interesting.

We now realise that that does not always happen, so we have learned something. We already have up a Rockdale, Kogarah and Rocky Point Peninsula videos. We suggest you go into the search facility, that is the magnifying glass, and type in St. Peters Cooks River- Rockdale. If you don’t find Kogarah and Rocky Point Peninsula near at hand, do with these what you have done with Rockdale. We would like to also thank you for subscribing. I think its a strange use of the word as it always suggests to me that you have to give money, when in this case it is of course FREE! What more can we say, we entirely agree. When we started researching Bexley, we were surprised to find a unique architectural quality in some of the still existing housing. I think a walk of the Bexley area ending at Rockdale’s Lydham Hall is worth thinking about. However, until Covid restrictions are lifted and restoration work is on Lydham Hall is complete, that is a thought that’s going nowhere.

Was great seeing this. My family has lived on Harrow rd since my Great Grandmother bought our house sometime in the 40's. It was interesting to see the old ad for land sale. I've never seen it before. It's interesting because it doesn't fit with house lot's now also it didn't include an old stone cottage that sadly got knocked down in the late 90's. it was located in Washington st. I've always thought this house was an old farm cottage and thought our house might have come from it's estate but doesn't look like. Also you mentioned the houses opposite St Elmo. Can I suggest having a closer look at all the houses from 23-37 Harrow Rd. Some have been altered/ butchered but if you look closely you can still see the old details and how they matched the other houses next to them. Lastly the story behind the murder at St Elmo is a really sad one. I was the son of the family that did it. He was a returned solder and it looks like he snapped.

Thanks for your reply, it truly helps enormously in sustaining our enthusiasm. We had occasion recently to pass through Bexley on a bus, and the delight for me was for her to point out the places featured in the video.Certainly a hidden gem of Sydney suburbia. We did not embellish the story of your family, as we wish to avoid controversy and feel that history can be more than the sensational. Our avoidance of more detailed information on any of the videos is driven by the same values, and the need for brevity in UA-cam videos. What do you think of a history walk through the suburb?

@@Lea-bw9wj You may have noticed that we have created videos that are not given the a suburb title. Tempe House at Arncliffe, Child Brickmakers of St. Peters, Leisure time at Botany and Willie the Boatman (after whom the brewery is named), to name but a few. Sadly, even though we personally think that they deserve a greater viewing, it is not happening. To understand the suburb of St. Peters it is essentially in our opinion to recognise the horrors of the brick making trade in the late nineteenth century, and the parents that were complicit in it, given that they were the highest paid tradesmen inn the area. Likewise the pleasure grounds at Botany and particularly the zoo. What drives our views are the tags we put onto our site. It took us a little time to discover how the algorithm worked, but we are still at a loss as how to those who are not tagged with a suburb name. Even our James Cooks navigation of the east coast of Australia video has had less views than it deserves. It is not that we aren’t sympathetic to the idea, we are still trying to find a way forward. As an aside, we have a caravan on the South Coast where the headland was named by Cook. Something we only learned from creating the video.
