Coober Pedy was one of my favourite stops on the road trip and full of interesting things to see and do. Loved the mines, the underground church and Faye's house. Big thank you to the lady who showed me around, she was so full of information and made the experience. A mus do if in Coober Pedy. Any questions, feel free to ask and thanks for watching x
Coober Pedy is one of the most unique places in Australia, but did no-one tell you that the town name is pronounced Coober Peeedy (with a long e sound)? The miners built themselves the underground houses to survive during the incredibly hot summer, temperatures stay above and at times well above 40 degrees celcius, underground stays a pleasant mid 20s. (No need for airconditioning) The underground buildings are amazing but I would find it so claustrophobic, I'm sure I'd get over the claustrophobia if it meant staying cool! (Miners in the UK underground would just be cold and wet! The working conditions were bad enough, at least they got to go homes that were a bit better)
Hello and that you for your insights and additions. Yes someone did tell me it was Coober Peeedy towards the end (makes me feel bad I was saying it wrong all the time I was there)! The underground homes actually do not feel too bad as they have light and air holes in each room and are so tall and spacious. Really stunning to look around and like you say, the perfect temperature all year round. The mines themselves are quite small and tight and I always wonder how miners work like that everyday. It would be so tough. An amazing place that is still mining. Loved it here. xx
Coober Pedy does have an interesting social demographics problem, many of the miners were European immigrants and arrived in the 1950s and 60s. They worked their mine leases, always in the hope of a big strike. There is a large population of elderly males who never married and have no families or even extended families, Coober Pedy is their home but being so isolated medical and aged care is difficult.
Hi. The lady at Fayes House explained how we could still go and register for a piece of land and mine it ourselves. How cool is that! Thank you for your additions, the demographics is a problem and I am glad you raised that. xx
The cemetery???? No! Oh my goodness have I missed a gem? No one mentioned one and did not see any information about one. Please tell me what I have missed! I will be so annoyed as I really do not like missing out!
Oh no! I missed that! Oh I am gutted. I’ll have to go back now and see this! I am not surprised though there is definitely a pride here in the town for thier mining. Would love to see a picture if you have one? Xx

When we visited the gravesite had little trucks and mining equipment on top. 😊
