Major props to Dan for living the life of a US city planner, making a city that has public transit that's not operating, a city wholly comprising of a grid, no services whatsoever except for an absurdly overdone prison, and only being vaguely profitable off of technicalities. The whole reason behind the insanely steep roads in SF is because the guy who originally laid out the planned grid for the city was from/based on Philadelphia, an almost entirely flat city with few hills.
Because making a grid over hills meant you’d be left with roads at a 10% incline, it was not a development method used in any hilly cities or towns. SF is pretty much the only city like this in the United States.

I've done The Grid in the first game in campaign mode, eventually completely square-gridding a full map of 3x3 plots or whatever the maximum is. The worst traffic is at the entrances to the city, and it seems not much will mitigate that. When I tried putting in a train to ship things in and out better, the insane red-level traffic moved from the city entrances to the train station. The trains backed up clear past where I could see beyond the edge of the map. So I killed the train station and let the red traffic go back to where it had started.

ironically this is a metagaming concept i explored in cities skylines a long time ago and i found that indeed, just making a huge city of squares works. this along with the one road tactic which i found to be alot less successful, and one highway with 100 intersections which i found to be the best outcome, so long as you dont have orange industry heavy traffic ruining the road for the rest of the city.
