  • For years, I've dreamed of trying to use a scythe to cut grass in my permaculture orchard. So I bought a snath and European blade and it just showed up in the mail. In this video, I test out the scythe and try to not look like a fool with my technique.

Don't lift the blade off the ground on your backswing. The blade is angled so the edge will stay above the ground while the back side of the blade slides over the grass. You will find it works better when the grass is wet with dew or rain.

Put some boiled linseed oil on the wooden parts.

I discovered your channel today and I'm hooked! Your experience doing documentaries and video production really show in the unusually high quality. Like a pro, you make it look easy. I had to comment on this one, although you've probably learned this by now: never put a steel blade away without wiping it with an oily rag or a spray with WD(Water Displacement)-40. Rust never sleeps!

Scything is really hard work! Keep that blade sharp to be effective.

Well, look who I found! Very cool! Didn’t know you had a scythe. You should use it more if you don’t now. I’ll take it if you won’t!

I wanted a scythe. My husband said 'no'.....he was afraid I'd hurt myself. I went to the CO-OP Country Store. They didn't have any that were a good fit for me. I'm 5' tall with little hands. Hubby got his way.....this time. I did get an awesome digging fork though. Nice sharp tines. Haven't stabbed myself or anyone else yet.

@@agirlnamedtomm940 No. I expanded the size of my veggie garden and also put in 4 raised beds around the perimeter of the backyard. I let a portion of the backyard grow naturally, it is a little haven for pollinators. Our house is urban on a 44' x 176' city lot. I turned the backyard into a mini food forest. There is nothing left for me to scythe!

I've used the traditional American version of your European scythe. Mow a couple acres it becomes a lot less fun. You need some old style Morgan horses and some farm implements including a mower.

Cool! I've seen the scythe in later videos it looks fun but difficult to use, I would love to try one on the lawn it would probably scare my neighbors tho!

Forgive a question from a pure novice. Is there any specific reason for choosing a Scythe over a motorized lawn mower or one of those string cutters? Seems to be pretty back breaking work.
On other topic, I just stumbled across your channel and have been bingle watching the videos and going along with you for your journey. You're doing good. I hope one day to retire to a farm like yours too. Although probably something smaller definitely.

Lawn mowers and string cutters are a good choice if you seek to shred the grass in order to have them decay quickly and for detailing jobs. The scythe on the other hand is primarily a harvesting tool, the stems remain whole. Also, with a scythe you can very easily tackle tall ("overgrown") grass.

I wonder if this would be harder for taller people if it only came in one size or if they have scythes for taller people otherwise it sounds like overtime it could be painful to use lol

  • @saraschneider6781

Gotta tell you man. If the blade is up by your throat, you're REALLY using it wrong so that should literally never happen unless you majorly trip and fall. I would be more worried about accidentally wacking it into your foot.

  • @JackAcid13

That was almost painful to watch, keep the blade on the ground! Use the edge of the stone, not the flat. You need to watch more scything video, read the book. Keep trying you'll get better with practice.
