1982 I was working at Alexander's dept Store, NYC. I remember the toys. Battle Cat, Skeletor, He Man, it was great. It was around th he same time as Cabbage Patch Dolls.
Good memories.
All the best Shaun of NYC
I cut my hand with a real sword trying to do the intro “I have the power” lol I felt goosebumps when he said that line.
As a kid I enjoyed this movie, but as an adult its impossible not to note its many faults compared to the source material. Truth is you cant have a definitive He Man story unless it's set entirely on Eternia, and a budget that is available to do the project justice. Great review though Johny to a childhood fave.
Thumbs up, much agreed man!
This movie made me a lifelong fan of Frank Langella. He is just so over the top hammy here, it's just glorious. This was a favorite of mine as a kid, and it still is to this day.
He has since said that Skeletor was one of his favorite roles.
When I watched the cartoon as a kid I remember skeletors voice being more high pitched and nasally. Am I imagining this?
@@pointysidedown No, he was quite high pitched and nasally, thanks to the incomparable Alan Oppenheimer. He's STILL acting at 92!
Skeletor in this film deserves credit for being one of the best on-screen villains of all time. Such an amazing performance and I love the make-up and costume design. The sets inside Skeletors palace looked amazing as well. I love this film despite its shortcomings. As a kid when this came out I was amazed!
As you mentioned Captain Power, have you considered a video on their series? It was a great toy line and series. Sadly it didn’t catch on. It just came and went. I wasn’t aloud to play with HeMan. Having religious parents and HeMan saying “I have the power” my mother said “only God has the power”. Thanks mom.....Goddam it.
I relate I grew up in a strict Christian household I couldn’t watch anything. Any show that had aliens in it was demonic and of the devil. I might have to check out Captain Power and might even consider doing a video on the show. Thanks for your comments
Jon
8:27 The after credits scene wasn't in the screenplay and was Gary Goddard's idea. He arranged for BOSS studios to have a vat of pink liquid prepared and he talked to Frank Langella about it and told him what he wanted him to do. Frank Langella was told by Gary Goddard to get in the pink liquid wearing the skull mask and he was to surface, look at the camera and say "I'll Be Back!". Frank Langella agreed to do it and it was filmed and done in 1 take.
I heard that Frank Langella jump for the role as Skeletor. Because he's son was a big fan of The Masters of the Universe.
Yes, this is true!
Frank's Skeletor was 'the' Skeletor forever. Subsequent portrayals really feel like they try to combine Oppenheimer's zaniness with Langella's sinister darkness. I love it.
i loved this film, more then the superman 4 movie, for a time i tought that meg fosters eyes where contact lenses, boy, was i wrong, beautiful woman
what could they come up now if they decided to meke he-man again
I saw this in the theater and it was awesome! Of course I was REALLY high so that may have had something to do with it.
Another great video Jonathan. Can you do Dune next?
Watched it again last night and gets better every time
Great video Jonathan, but I did notice one error in Robert Duncan McNeill being called Brian Duncan McNeill. Other than that, a great informative video. I didn't know about Jack Kirby's potential involvement.
One movie that can use a reboot, it was fun to watch but only on TV on a lazy Sunday.
Great Movie.
Despite the fact that the film bears only a slight resemblance to it's cartoon source material, it WAS a helluva lotta fun, and is very quotable...the effects ARE very good, especially considering the ludicrously low budget, the casting is good and the score is wonderful...it sits on my mental shelf of 'guilty pleasures' and I revisit it often for a smile...;)
I'm convinced every male in Britain is a youtuber.
If you mean the person who makes these vids, he's not British. He sounds like either a Kiwi or an Aussie to me.
I love Masters of the Universe! It's a great movie!Frank Langella was Brilliant as Skeletor! Its a great 80's movie!
13:39 those toys weren't released for the movie. They were Saurod, Blade and Gwildor.
You get what you pay for, something Cannon never understood. And to think it could've been worse!
Can you do a video on Steven Spielberg's A.I?
@The Anthropologist _Forensic It's quite a decent film. An introspective drama into what makes us human. Many people hate the ending because they feel that it betrays Stanley Kubrick (the guy who originally wrote the film)'s vision, but it was really Kubrick who wrote the ending
@The Anthropologist _Forensic Great.
It's a fascinating story about a robot child who wants to become human to earn the affection of his mother
Agreed with
The Colorization Channel, Spielberg's A.I. would be excellent for one of JonnyBaak's videos!
This was one of the prime examples of budget cuts killing a film. This had all the reasons in the world to be a blockbuster and beloved by fans, but they just kept cheaping out. Hard to say what it might have done with a real budget, more characters, better special effects and take it off Earth and in Eternia where it belonged. I will say, not really sure Dolf Lundren ever had the charm to pull the roll off though. He Man needed a lot more talking and quips, they made him more like Conan instead.
When it comes to looks, Dolph Lundgren is the perfect live action He-Man.
The first movie I went to 2 see at the theater...stoned out of my mind...on "reefer". (experimental phase)...I actually passed out!
The only things I liked about this movie was Bill Conti's fun and infectious score, Frank Langella and the eye popping bod on Dolph.
Awww, nothing about "Pigboy".
Ah yes, who could forget the most memorable character in the film "pig boy" who hands skeletor his staff.....
Interesting. I didn't think Lungren had a distracting accent at all. As a kid, I didn't even notice the accent.
Well, as I was never a big fan of He-Man, I never understood why it failed, but it’s like a model for modern movie and TV show making now, though, take a well known franchise with a faithful fan base, ignore them and make a cheap flashy nonsensical imitation that’s ‘even better’, watch the ratings dive. Yay.
Confession time but I feel I must be one of the very, very few fans of the Masters of the Universe toy-line that _also_ likes this much maligned cinematic adaption as well! Still do.
Indeed, everyone seems to take delight in dumping on the latter and whilst there are many legitimate shortcomings one often gets the impression that a _lot_ of the criticism is ultimately predicated on prejudice against the infamous Cannon films.
Yes, childhood nostalgia plays a part in my affection but still, there’s a lot to like here and whilst the film deviates considerably from the source material I really never considered it a problem tbh. Each to their own though of course.
So many movies fail because studios give up on them and start to cut cost.
I enjoyed the animated series as a kid, and I thought the movie was going to suck & thought it was actually pretty decent. This video cracks me up because it was like "we were going to do this and that but didn't have the budget"; a science fiction film on a tight budget is not going to work unless it's extremely character-driven and the actors are very compelling. That Cannon studio hurt themselves with all the shortcuts, and Superman IV was the film most people want to forget was even made. No wonder why they folded; work on the script and the quality of the film and the fans will come.
Jonny: "Masters of the Universe was a highly successssful Mattel toy line released in 1982."
Me: I see it's time to feel old again. (Nah, I'm kidding.) 😀
ben trimble I have some figures and weapons in the garage 🤣 I’m 43 a few transformers too best is Megatron and Grimlock.
For the time, it's like a really good made-for-TV movie. It just fell really short of a theatrically released film.
Great review.
Happy Easter JB!
Stay Safe!
Thanks so much you too
I was 7 years old when He-Man came out, I loved it I had all the toys and it was my favorite.
I never went and saw the movie and here is why. I saw the trailer I got excited until I saw He-Man in an earth city, it was so aweful. I was immediatley turned off as a kid to this.
I didnt even ask my parents to take me I was just disappointed and have been ever since.
When I saw this as a kid I knew one thing Skeletor was the best part of this movie and when I got home to bash my Master of the Universe toys into each other I modeled Skeletor after the movie and not the wimpy pansy in the cartoon
Thanks for your videos, iv watched them all, very informative, have you thought about covering some British science fiction classics eg, bbc day of the triffds, quatermass conclusion or survivors thanks
Pretty good but can you please make a video about the movie Clash of the Titans?
always surprised they even thought about dubbing dolph. dude sounds more american than some americans
Whew, I hated the cartoon and was too old for the toys, but I'm not gonna lie, this is a fun popcorn movie.
Which episodes in the Filmation era He-Man did he hit people?
First animated muscular superhero? Not true.
11:02 heres where deontay wilder got his excuse
Who's here after the Netflix ad 🤣
Loved the cartoon as a kid (though its spinoff She-Ra had better stories), but when it came to toys I was always more of a MASK and Lego kinda kid.
No battle cat or Orko..this movie was a travesty
I loved the animation series and toys the movie not so much !
I liked it and I didn't, both for the reasons mentioned in this video!!!
I'm the 400th Liker!
This movie was such a disappointment/insult to kids who loved He-man
