I've been playing music for over 15 or 17 years and was stagnant in my college days (maybe on my 7th or 9th year playing guitar) onwards. Didn't exactly stopped playing but more like I stopped learning new things and just resorted to stock knowledge and noodling on my free time. Back then I've always wanted to play outside notes which is a bit of a complex subject. For me it's a matter of dedication to time given that I missed on a lot of music theory. I can't understand intervals, how chords are made, how to utilize scales in solos and chord changes so on so forth. I came across this video and you good sir made such a refresher. I guess it's not too late for me to get back to my feet and work my ass off. Thank you!

I have played for 15 years (self taught by manually learning songs individually) and I still was unable to improvise or even identify keys/chords without reference - your video is one of a long list I have watched and is BY FAR the most concise, logical, well structured and easy to understand guitar video I have ever seen. I have only ever commented on videos a handful of times, but wanted to make a point to say, "thank you!"--your video helped me make the connection to the major/minor keys and figuring out how it is determined that a chord is major or minor. I have tinkered with guitar and bass since I was 13 and had a *basic* understanding of music theory; now I am 40 and taking guitar lessons again to actually improve...they have helped, but your explanation has most definitely been my "ah ha!" moment I've been seeking. Now to put it into practice and make things second nature!

I've been playing guitar alongside my main instrument drums for the past 12 years. I've always found learning theory very boring in comparison to the drum notation but today I stumbled upon this and I watched the whole thing and it made so much sense! I've watched other videos on music theory, but I would usually get lost with all of the terminology. I didn't face that problem with this video though, because of how clear the explanation was!
man this is the only video that i have ever understood when it comes to even basic theory. i’m only 14 and started playing almost 2 years ago and ive been struggling to get theory right. i played staged events and shows but do not have any musical knowledge, so this helped greatly!!!!

Hey I just wanted to reach out and say that this video has laid groundwork for what I believe to finally be the final coursework for a 35 year struggle with music theory. I’m not any farther ahead than before other than I feel like your foundation truly made more sense than anything I have heard and I’ve only listened to this video one time.. I’ve struggled for all of my life and have even had some minor success with playing and keeping up with other educated musicians. I’m tired of following though, and I have been since I was two weeks into my first set of strings.. my issue is that I can’t seem to put these things in my head with any sort of structure that makes sense it seems. Quickly I find myself overwhelmed by a bunch of things referencing one another in a way that middle schoolers all over the globe pick up on with relative ease while I, even as an aging relic, can’t seem to wrap my mind around.. oddly enough algebra and trig were difficult until I was able to relate it to something tangible and then my entire world opened up mathematically and my career, believe it or not, has been deeply rooted in the mathematics I once found utterly incomprehensible… I hear music much like I experience the world.. empathically and through a beautifully cursed mind that feels minor and major keys as much as I feel a commercial for St Jude.. I wish so badly to be able to write music that I can express myself with these tools.. I’ve just had little luck with the foundation.. I think you may have finally helped me crack the code for putting down the solid ground floor and I really want to thank you for that.. I’m subscribing right now and I hope yoj find success in your work and “lots of happiness in your future! Sorry for the wall of text.. it’s just been a long journey even getting past the first page. Ahaa, it is beginning to make sense. I appreciate the logic of communicating in major key vs relative minor. I suspect modality is another language worth understanding. Thanks for your lesson, you are a talented teacher.
@andrewclarkeguitar I have never known any music theory, the only scale I've known is blues scale, and the basic Chords. I never even knew that the strings was EADGBE. Always played by ear and learned piano and drums by ear too. On piano I used an acoustic guitar to learn piano chords by doing lower end chords on the guitar and use my ears to find them on the piano and doing 5 finger chords instead of the 3 roots. I knew power chords, but did not know what notes they were. my guitar skills staggered and ended up selling my last electric guitar in and was without for 10 years and only kept a cheap acoustic guitar until 2022 when I threw it in the bin because of some bent frets on the 12th and 13th fret. I learned songs on piano by ear only hearing them inside my head, such as Cannon in D, Yesterday from Beatles and would listen to the songs to control that I was in the right key, which I was not at first with Cannon in D as i played it in C until i listened to it and then used my ears to correct it and had to relearn it by finding the right chords. In October 2023 I bought a bass and started learning that by ear, shortly after bought a fretless, and decided in February that I wanted to understand more of what I was playing to not feel limited to only learn and play by ear and feel. So i joined up a 14 hour semester for Bass guitar containing basic Music Theory, scales and modes, learned the basics of a note sheet ( still need to train on that because I never read notes so I constantly have to remember where the C is on the bass clamp and where the G was on the G-key ( not sure if that's how you say it in English, we call it "G-nøkkel" translates to G-key ) We also use H instead of B, so that was a bit confusing at the start. Learned about the circle of fifths, learned about the root of a note how to play minor and major scales and modes., and learned about parallel tone arts After learning the basics of music theory where note sheets were not that much in focus to be fair, I actually evolved on all the instruments that I've learned by ear, I know could name the chords my ears taught me on piano and had a broader understand of the fretboard, and what notes where played when I did power chords. I always thought I could never learn to read and understand notes and music theory, I used to think it was way to advanced for my brain, but I was wrong. The fact is that everything new that you don't know seems overwhelming and impossible until you learn it! So learning music theory is actually super important, and I wasted 39 years of my life NOT learning the theory until I did, and now I'm just hungry for more, and that's the reason I jumped in this video today, I just wanted a refresher and maybe learn something I haven't learned since the semester ended before this summer, and I cant really afford to join another because it cost 1200 dollars pr semester and I spent too much on buying instruments and modifying them! 😛 I might rejoin another semester next year if i can afford it! I should be done with the modifications for my 2 basses and 3 guitars at then, and yes the mods I do don't come cheap even though I do all the work on my instruments my self, even the setups and the intonation.

Amazing video. As a self-taught player of 15 years, I learned the instrument similarly to your description, with online tabs, and yes, by doing this, I learned a lot of songs from my favourite artists, but I'm now realising how little time I've spent over the years learning theory and how having even a simple understanding of it will make you a far more well rounded and creative musician. Your info was easy to understand also.
I'm super new so I'm doin the spider exercise while I say the string name out loud 😂😂 gonna do that for a few practice sessions then come back to this 😅
I am learning a ton of information from your content. I am from the mtv birth generation with hardly any guitar teachers around. We bought guitars and watched mtv and with a handy chord chart, learned songs. We got pretty good, but had no theory or knowledge of any relation of chords. We messed around until we made our own music. Played in worship group and wrote our own songs and traveled and played. There were major limitations to that type of playing. Finally got stuck in music, bored and gave it up for over 15 years. My daughter wanted to learn, so I picked back up my rickenbacker 650 Dakota, got her a les paul studio E, and started over. Been watching 75% of your content and 25% of another content. I am better in 6 months than I was years ago. To keep my daughters interested while we learn, she needs a few songs to jam with, along with music. So far it is a morgan wade song and big green tractor. We listen to lots of music styles but country type is her favorite. I started learning notes on each string, some pentatonic scales, solfege, different chords, and starting to see how they all work and mesh together a bit more. I will say that I am guilty of jumping around too much. Always come back to just wanting to play some music and jam with her somewhat. Do you have a suggestion of what order to learn all the content, how it is easiest to see the neck map and all the ways it joins together? Across all the different components. I am trying to let her learn some music along the way of learning guitar theory. She is pretty good on the piano and is teaching me some things about music, 12 years old!

It takes a million years for me to count the notes and then figure out which chords are in the key and then remember the chord pattern that is supposed to sound good and then remember the chords again. Is this normal or am I the only one? I’m a complete beginner tho I haven’t internalized the chords yet.
I wish people taught guitar theory in schl the way they do for keyboard. I’m a self taught pianist and I always wondered why I was so much better at piano than guitar, I thought it was diff in skill, but it’s just that I knew more piano theory than guitar theory 💀
I agree. I think it's because you can get by on guitar for a long time with zero theory knowledge, so it feels less necessary. I'm trying to make it a little more accessible for people. ☺
Watching your video every week seems to have become a routine for me. I have difficulty practicing the syncopation because I always have the habit of playing on the beat. It’s a bit confusing for me to tap my foot but not play the note. Can you maybe do a video about it? Many thanks !

I've been playing guitar since I was 8, and to this day I cannot explain any of this to anyone. Certain hand shape make guitar go brrrrr. Some hand shape make guitar sound bad.

I'm afraid that without supervision, I've picked up some bad playing techniques in r/o fretting and strumming. I've also had injuries from playing the guitar in my left wrist and right shoulder, and have difficulty playing the barre chords. @andrewclarkeguitar I have never known any music theory, the only scale I've known is blues scale, and the basic Chords. I never even knew that the strings was EADGBE. Always played by ear and learned piano and drums by ear too. On piano I used an acoustic guitar to learn piano chords by doing lower end chords on the guitar and use my ears to find them on the piano and doing 5 finger chords instead of the 3 roots. I knew power chords, but did not know what notes they were. my guitar skills staggered and ended up selling my last electric guitar in and was without for 10 years and only kept a cheap acoustic guitar until 2022 when I threw it in the bin because of some bent frets on the 12th and 13th fret.
I learned songs on piano by ear only hearing them inside my head, such as Cannon in D, Yesterday from Beatles and would listen to the songs to control that I was in the right key, which I was not at first with Cannon in D as i played it in C until i listened to it and then used my ears to correct it and had to relearn it by finding the right chords. In October 2023 I bought a bass and started learning that by ear, shortly after bought a fretless, and decided in February that I wanted to understand more of what I was playing to not feel limited to only learn and play by ear and feel.
So i joined up a 14 hour semester for Bass guitar containing basic Music Theory, scales and modes, learned the basics of a note sheet ( still need to train on that because I never read notes so I constantly have to remember where the C is on the bass clamp and where the G was on the G-key ( not sure if that's how you say it in English, we call it "G-nøkkel" translates to G-key )
We also use H instead of B, so that was a bit confusing at the start. Learned about the circle of fifths, learned about the root of a note how to play minor and major scales and modes., and learned about parallel tone arts
After learning the basics of music theory where note sheets were not that much in focus to be fair, I actually evolved on all the instruments that I've learned by ear, I know could name the chords my ears taught me on piano and had a broader understand of the fretboard, and what notes where played when I did power chords. I always thought I could never learn to read and understand notes and music theory, I used to think it was way to advanced for my brain, but I was wrong. The fact is that everything new that you don't know seems overwhelming and impossible until you learn it! So learning music theory is actually super important, and I wasted 39 years of my life NOT learning the theory until I did, and now I'm just hungry for more, and that's the reason I jumped in this video today, I just wanted a refresher and maybe learn something I haven't learned since the semester ended before this summer, and I cant really afford to join another because it cost 1200 dollars pr semester and I spent too much on buying instruments and modifying them! 😛 I might rejoin another semester next year if i can afford it! I should be done with the modifications for my 2 basses and 3 guitars at then, and yes the mods I do don't come cheap even though I do all the work on my instruments my self, even the setups and the intonation.

Amazing video. As a self-taught player of 15 years, I learned the instrument similarly to your description, with online tabs, and yes, by doing this, I learned a lot of songs from my favourite artists, but I'm now realising how little time I've spent over the years learning theory and how having even a simple understanding of it will make you a far more well rounded and creative musician. Your info was easy to understand also.

I am learning a ton of information from your content.
I am from the mtv birth generation with hardly any guitar teachers around. We bought guitars and watched mtv and with a handy chord chart, learned songs. We got pretty good, but had no theory or knowledge of any relation of chords. We messed around until we made our own music. Played in worship group and wrote our own songs and traveled and played.
There were major limitations to that type of playing. Finally got stuck in music, bored and gave it up for over 15 years.
My daughter wanted to learn, so I picked back up my rickenbacker 650 Dakota, got her a les paul studio E, and started over.
Been watching 75% of your content and 25% of another content. I am better in 6 months than I was years ago.
To keep my daughters interested while we learn, she needs a few songs to jam with, along with music. So far it is a morgan wade song and big green tractor. We listen to lots of music styles but country type is her favorite.
I started learning notes on each string, some pentatonic scales, solfege, different chords, and starting to see how they all work and mesh together a bit more.
I will say that I am guilty of jumping around too much.
Always come back to just wanting to play some music and jam with her somewhat.
Do you have a suggestion of what order to learn all the content, how it is easiest to see the neck map and all the ways it joins together? Across all the different components.
I am trying to let her learn some music along the way of learning guitar theory. She is pretty good on the piano and is teaching me some things about music, 12 years old!

It takes a million years for me to count the notes and then figure out which chords are in the key and then remember the chord pattern that is supposed to sound good and then remember the chords again. Is this normal or am I the only one? I’m a complete beginner tho I haven’t internalized the chords yet.
I wish people taught guitar theory in schl the way they do for keyboard. I’m a self taught pianist and I always wondered why I was so much better at piano than guitar, I thought it was diff in skill, but it’s just that I knew more piano theory than guitar theory 💀
I agree. I think it's because you can get by on guitar for a long time with zero theory knowledge, so it feels less necessary. I'm trying to make it a little more accessible for people. ☺
Watching your video every week seems to have become a routine for me. I have difficulty practicing the syncopation because I always have the habit of playing on the beat. It’s a bit confusing for me to tap my foot but not play the note. Can you maybe do a video about it? Many thanks !

I've been playing guitar since I was 8, and to this day I cannot explain any of this to anyone. Certain hand shape make guitar go brrrrr. Some hand shape make guitar sound bad.

I'm a self taught player and all that I've learnt is from UA-cam. I'm afraid that without supervision, I've picked up some bad playing techniques in r/o fretting and strumming.
I've also had injuries from playing the guitar in my left wrist and right shoulder, and have difficulty playing the barre chords.
