- Google’s Nest Doorbell has been one of the most popular smart models available. I picked up the 2nd Gen model to see what’s changed and if its gotten better.

I just wanted to add that you must have existing doorbell wiring with 16-24 volts for this wired doorbell. Google makes a tranformer you can get if you dont have an existing doorbell.
I have the 1st gen and the sun beats on it from about 2pm until sunset. It is only just under three years old and the front clear portion has cracked and is peeling all off the unit. Looks like the 2nd gen is built with a different material so it may hold up longer for me. I am going to give it a try since I do enjoy the google doorbell.
Good Review. Guess I'll keep my Gen 1 for now. Just found out that the subscription is going up 33% ($80/yr). Am contemplating getting rid of it since I only use the system to warn me who's at the door or when a pkg arrives. Have rarely gone back to see old recordings. Or the option would be to look at Ring (wired), and move to Alexa if I want to continue with a subscription with longer video recording with a much lower subscription fee.

Thanks for the comparison! You have helped me reach a decision!
Glad to hear it!
I've had this for about 1.5 years. Even though it is hard-wired, I am getting the 3rd notice for low battery, always during cold weather. I don't understand why this is. Also - and most importantly, after I take the device off to charge, it is a major struggle to get it back on correctly. It's almost to the point that I'm going to get a different doorbell. When it works, it works great,
The wired version has a built in battery for power outages
Id like to have wider angle on the new doorbell.
Thorough review joe. Great video!
Much appreciated!
@Joe does the gen 2 Doorbell have a faster response time or prosessor? I feel my Gen 1 uses a long time from when someone ring the doorbell and to the alert is broadcasted on my Goole Home display and phone.
From what I can find online it looks like it's just the camera that's changed. For me there is about a second delay between some ringing the doorbell and a notification popping up on my phone.
Dude this was awesome
Thank you!
This would have been my choice of doorbell camera had Google not increased the subscription rate by a huge amount. I had the previous gen 1 and I had no problems with it. Since moving, I needed a new doorbell camera. I purchased the Eufy E340 instead and while not as slick looking as the Google Gen 2, there are no monthly fees and it works just as well. There's no point in buying the Google Gen 2.
After many years, I ditched the Nest doorbell for the Ring doorbell. Specifically, I brought the Ring Pro 2 wired doorbell. After only a few days, the Ring doorbell is far better than Nest in every way. Response time, picture, clarity, features within the app, etc. There is nothing intuitive about the app or searching video history with Nest. I can’t believe I suffered with Nest for many years. Again , Riing doorbell 100 times better.
I'm looking at the Ring doorbell camera as well.
I’ve had Nest for years, and had nonstop frustrations such as: when the doorbell rings, the app never connects. It just spins, so I have to close the app and relaunch and hope the person hasn’t walked away by the time the app opens again. The video quality is also pixelated most times. I’ll have a serious look at Ring. Thanks
Does it have facial recognition
Animal detection?
Can you use Google TV to view cameras on your TV, that's a no. It's not better just cheaper
Nice thanks for the vid! Would it be possible to bother you asking what's the distance between the two holes holding the mount on the wall please? I do have a big hole from where the electrique cables are coming from, so I want to ensure there's enough space. Thanks!
Good review and I agree with everything that you said. I just installed mine recently and I have a second side door regular doorbell. The side door one continues to work as usual but the Nest one doesn’t activate my doorbell chime. Instead, my Google speaker chimes and announces that someone is at the front door. Would you know why that is? Thanks
Do you know if you can view the vertical timeline on Google Home's "Public Preview" for Desktop for the 2nd Gen door bell? Currently I can only view the live feed for my 1st Gen Nest Hello door bell in the app or desktops, public preview before redirecting it back to the Nest app. The two free 2nd Gen Nest cameras that Google has sent to me won't work with the Nest app but I'm satisfied with the "Nest like" level of control within in the Google Home app and Google Home's Public Preview for Desktop.
It looks like you should be able to view timeline history on your desktop now. Google announced a couple weeks ago this feature would be rolling out and I just checked mine and I'm able to view history on my desktop.
@@aboveaveragejoereviewsOkay, thanks for your response.
I got to finish setting up in Google home app and says cannot communicate with google. Anyone else have this problem?
Can I use this doorbell without any subscription. Will I get an alert if somebody rings the bell?
Yes, you can use without a subscription. You'll still get an alert when someone rings the doorbell. You just won't be able to go back further than 3 hours to view recorded events.
question: do I have to pay (subscription) to hear the doorbell rings on my phone? I installed this one and there is no sound going to my phone when someone rings the doorbell.
If someone rings your doorbell you shouldn't need a subscription to get a notification for that. You might just need to check your notification settings on your phone.
@@aboveaveragejoereviews I get notification but not ringing sound or ding dong. tec guy from google and I went on my phone setting, but still
You can't see this doorbell camera on the nest app?
Correct, it only works with Google Home app.
My 1st gen wired doorbell stops recording when someone presses the button. This is supposedly due to the internal battery going bad. While I have seen some instructions on how to change out this battery, it doesn't seem like it was intended by Google for this to be serviceable. Do you know if the second gen doorbell will suffer from this same problem?
Ahhh.. Yes. I'm on the same boat. Battery seems to be gone, so doorbell disconnects when someone rings.....
@@SebastianPucci me as well. 1st gen lasted about a year and a half before internal battery fail which left me with the camera blanking out when doorbell was rung. and right around the holidays so we are missing package deliveries! any news on the longevity of 2nd gen doorbell? same issue happening? or have they improved that little batteries life? or better yet, it's a wired device - just keep it working!!!
Would an installation height of 41" be okay you think? Or just not usable...
At that height, you might have issues with seeing faces of people at your door. With mine installed at 47", some people's faces are out of frame.
Thanks! But even at 47"... that is only when they are really close to it i guess. @@aboveaveragejoereviews
Lower resolution and portrait mode (Aspect ration) is deal-breaker for me, as I use the google nest hub to view the camera video. Disappointed in this doorbell camera.
Hello will not work remotely with Alexa. I’d like something that can alert others outside the range of the wired door chime, so other people can know when there is a doorbell ring.
Can you be more specific. I have mine connected in my Alexa app and it works well. I have several devices throughout the house and when the doorbell is rung, it also announces it through all the devices. I can also ask on my firestick "Alexa, show me the front doorbell" and she will show the camera view on the TV. Just connect your account in the Alexa app under skills. It also lets you view the camera inside the Alexa app. They work well together.
What do you get without subscription? Can I still talk to the person when they ring the bell?
You get three hour video history recording, builtin intelligent alerts where the doorbell is able to detect if there's a person, package or animal in view. Yes you can still talk to someone without the subscription.
@@aboveaveragejoereviewswhat do u mean 3 hours.
@@user-su1xk3mv2b You can view recordings in the previous three hours. For example if you looked at recording history at noon, you can view any recorded footage from 9AM to noon.
So would it be safe to say the gen 2 wired is good?
Yes, I'd recommend it!
@@aboveaveragejoereviews thanks a lot!!
Does this doorbell have an SD card port?
No, it doesn't have an SD Port.
I just don’t like you can’t use the nest app for this anymore
It's not enjoyable or even watchable with you taking too fast, making your video useless!
Thanks for the feedback.
