"Best" is always subjective but "unique" certainly fits. I know no other musician/songwriter who is comparable to him. A legend that's sadly almost unknown outside a small niche
''The Lie'' - just one man and a piano is more devastating than any so called ''metal music'' as it assaults not only you senses, but your very perceptions and beliefs or lack of.............
Back in the 1980s I got a job as a bouncer at the El Mocambo in Toronto (I got fired after three weeks for not being aggressive enough). The highlight of my tenure was seeing Peter Hammill, moving brilliantly from piano to guitar & back again. Between sets he sold his poetry books. The man blew me away with his passion.
Not an easy listen, and that is how it should be. Peter bares and gives his very soul in this performance and we are incredibly privileged to experience genius on this level. What a musician and poet he is - and even though he can be hard to listen to at times, he is never less than giving and rewarding to those who persevere for the long haul. Without doubt, ''The Lie'' is sublime and ''Forsaken Gardens'' is almost soothing - and then he hits you with ''A Louse is not a Home''. Quintessential Hamill and almost a Shakespearian tragedy in music. First time I heard it I thought ''What the fuck have I just listened to?'' But I always come back for more.
PH has been and is my my favorite song writer, singer , philosopher, sociologist, human, collective conciseness . He taught me to look deep into myself and understand me. Saw him in Lisbon some time in the late 90’s , guitar, piano on a opera house, simply divine. I was screaming all the versus along with him. What an incredible experience! Next April 2022 I got tickets to see him with VDGG in Luxembourg at the Rockhall !! Petter Hammil 4 ever!!
PH is the most unique songwriter/singer ever. You either love or hate him. I am a lifelong fan but can easily understand if you fall into the second category. VERY demanding and difficult stuff and his overly dramatic singing and "ugly" voice is too much for most people. Never met someone who even knows of him but I am sure that future generations will recognize him as one of the greatest geniuses in music of our times.
@@HerbalistGuybrush I also love Gabriel but he's way more pleasant sounding than Hammill. Especially live, PH is quite extreme with his screaming and often there's not any melody at all. Early Fish with Marillion also comes into my mind, very PH-like, especially on their 2nd album Fugazi
@@seghj At least i always have the two on the same pedestal. Probably because of the nature of the lyrics and the vocal delivery- But you are right, Gabriel is more "pleasant".
I have been a fan of Peter Hammill since the 70s ; I have most of his albums ( and VDGG's) . I think his singing is incredible : he started off as a choirboy . He has a very good vocal range , and compared to Peter Gabriel ( whom I also like ) , his lyrical articulation and phrasing is so much better in my opinion . John Lydon and Nick Cave , among others , are huge fans of Hammill's , who is indeed a remarkable musician , and one rock music's finest lyricists .
of course the best video document we have about Peter Hammill and surely the best live solo versions of Forsaken Gardens and A Louse Is not a Home I heard
Blown away to find this quality recording of PH performing one of my favourite albums. Caught this tour at the Wigmore Hall in London; one of those performances that stays with you down the years.
Fantastico!!!!!!!! Peter Hammill voce e pianoforte!!!!!!!! Grandi, grandissime emozioni davvero!!!!!!!!!
Most people are maybe not aware that Peter Hammill ( I'm a huge fan btw ) released a book of poems in 1974 called Killers, Angels, Refugees . Even John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten ) is a fan of PH, and that says a lot.
The Best singer-songwriter of all time.

Amazing, just one man and a piano. Been a fan since I discovered Pawn Hearts in 1972

In Camera from the same year is an absolute masterpiece .Great to see this footage of a genius in his prime .
He's a genius🎉utterly underrated
There really is not, nor has there ever been, anyone quite like Peter Hammill.
2021 and I'm proudly still here. Peter Hammill is the narrator of my life since I was 14... I'm 30 yrs old now.
Ti amo Peter, from Italy ❤️
And of mine since I was about 9 and I'm a mere 60 now - once discovered never put aside

He's brilliant
I think Peter Gabriel falls a bit into his "category". With the "ugly" voice and pathetic delivery. They both are my favourite singers.

Such a high-quality live performance.so much sadness and talent
Wow......... just Wowwwww.......
Songs from The Silent Corner and The Empty Stage, and the cape from In Camera.
I think I’ve always wanted to see that cape in it’s natural habitat. I am richer for it now.
Yes the cape from In Camera how wonderful !
Poetry!
Fabuleux document, bien mieux filmé qu'à la Télévision française !

Absolutely Great Performance of Mr. Hammill!!

C'est tout un vidéo!!!
This is excellent! Very much appreciated!
Wow, one of my favourite albums of all time . Great to see this. I wonder where the cape is now. It didn't really catch on. Thanks.
Браво!
never seen this before! Fantastic!!! Thanks for sharing!
Nice cape! But cape apart, this is a brilliant performance captured very well
No words for this one. I’ve been proven conclusively wrong in my every conscious considerations.
At least the spelling is an honest error!
Thank heavens I am not crazy or stupid as I would not be capable of appreciating the divine rapture of this.
This is fantastic, thanks.
Восхитительно
Quelle trouvaille, merci.
Un de mes albums préférés, un VDGG sous son nom.
Vodka orange ?
Très fort!
best solo period for PH....though The Future Now & after period had some good output!

Moi aussi !
This is an awesome find.
I saw VDGG in 1976 at the ATSV Hall, Saarbrucken, GER.
