Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Antikythera mechanism! The question that I have for you concerns the shape of the gear teeth. As you are well aware, most modern gears use involute shaped teeth. The Antikythera mechanism used triangular teeth (probably because that was the only logical shape at the time). Could it be that triangular gear teeth are more forgiving of flaws on inaccuracies that the mechanism could have been functional to at least some degree? It is difficult to believe that the device was nonfunctional. In fact, some researchers have noted that some parts showed stress from use.
Interesting is that with these triangular teeth there will be far more sliding action during rotation thus wear. I'm not disputing that it might have worked, but there is a lot of friction in this design for it to be practical in use over a long period of time. That's all. Thnx! Kalle
I don't see how this mechanism, or even the simplified version you suggest, could ever have been very useful. Certainly some of these things are interesting, but hardly of great moment. However, it's worth remembering that astrology was taken very seriously back then, and a tool that could model the positions of the planet relative to the zodiac at any time in the future or past would have been very useful in their work.
They knew more than we give them credit for.

Interesting device! The likely reason that this device cannot be made in a modular manner is that the natural world itself is interdependent.
In the real world everything is tied together, much like these gears. Perhaps the makers of this device understood something we have forgotten.

That may have been the thought process that led to it being made in a non-modular manner, but does that mean it couldn't have been made in a modular way? All functions might be interdependent when the mechanism is operational, but ultimately it's a model of the natural world. Could it not have have been created and assembled in a modular way (theoretically)?
@@neil4701Well Neil, I'm no professional physics major, but I suspect it would be easier to demonstrate the workings of a multi-bodied system, such as the earth/moon/planets/sun as a whole, rather than attempting to "isolate" or separate these various forces, as they are in reality simply one unified force or system. Nothing is isolated in reality. Thanks for your interest and comment! I welcome any more thoughts on this that you may have.
@@electrictao5180I think you could be right, at least for people living then. I think your comment about the makers possibly understanding something we have forgotten is very interesting, although I'm tempted to express it slightly differently. Perhaps the only way they were able to understand it (or a model of it) was as a whole system. We now tend to see eveything in a reductionist, modular manner, which makes the whole easier to understand in some ways but more difficult to understand in others. Perhaps the most interesting thing about the mechanism is the insghts it gives us into how these people thought about complexity?
What I mean is... it's possible to gain a total understanding of the whole system (including all of the interactions between parts we might try to isolate) from different directions. We tend to work out how the modules function first, then make allowances for how the functions of these modules change when they are all fitted together into an interdependent whole. Maybe the ancients did it the other way around, making the concept of an independent module inconceivable.
@@neil4701Well said Neil.I suspect they saw the world differently. Perhaps it was a more holistic point of view. We see "things" as separate. It's a matter of perspective. However, perhaps our beliefs on separateness causes it own complexities and problems. Who knows? Thanks!

Hi Kalle, Love your channel but I have to disagree with you on this, I think they must of had many of those some less complicated for daily use this seems to be every complication put all together and as for why none survive because they have recycled the material it's only now we throw things away in those days you used everything many times also there's no way that was a first attempt and it survived that's just my opinion great stuff and hope you had a nice holiday.
