Instead of hating on the rankings, I'm very intrigued by how different your placements are then mine, and I love it! It's great for me to see people like what I don't and vice versa because that just reminds me how everyone is unique :)
Also I can actually understand each placement due to the comments provided on each country which honestly I envy your ability to do that. Being brutally honest is hard these days and seeing that in this video got me saying "wow" to myself.
Absolutely great video and the comments on some countries were hilarious, very well done!

The fact that you liked Spanish and Finnish participation more than Greek, really surprises me. You said that the Greek participation has nothing to tell you. But Spain and Finland that show their asses, have more to tell you?

    • @Mirelelir
      @Mirelelir  27 днів тому +5

I said that I don't get what Greece's song wants to tell me, not that it doesn't tell me anything.
The main problem Greece has in this regard (that I don't see with Spain or Finland) is that it feels like a song you can really just appreciate if you understand the message/broader idea behind it, as from a purely compositional perspective, there just isn't all that much to the song.

On a more serious note considering my opinions though, I sorta have two ways to rank songs in my head and I can’t quite explain it. It’s like I absolutely loved the Netherlands, for instance, and definitely danced to it. But it was never nowhere NEAR my winner, and I probably wouldn’t have voted for it in the final.
It’s like, it’s a bop, not a winner, if that makes sense?
I felt kinda the same with Finland and Estonia, and Ireland as well tbh. Absolute bangers, definitely not winning songs tho. Can’t say why xD

Out of curiosity. Would you also declare 1944 by Jamala a political propaganda song because it is quite literally a song about the deportation by Russia of Crimeatartars? Just like the original version of Israel's song (before it got radically watered down) it has the theme of a serious act of terror against the people of a nation.

Ok the editing on this is very good, I would have thought Eurovision themselves helped you, but you literally disagree on your own opinion which confuses me, like at the first you said repeating makes it bad, but then you rank Sweden higher even tho it’s kinda dance pop (which you also didn’t like) and it’s literally one line for more than 90% of it. Knowing all that I wouldn’t think you would place the code in first place because sure the lyrics are pretty long but it has been repeated almost 3 times. Meaning that you probably blindly ranked them or your taste is just a roller coaster, or obviously tried to make us angry to get more comments 😂

Propaganda song?????!!!!!!!!!! Where is Oct 7th in the song? It's a fact that the EBU approved this version. But realistically, what type of song would you suggest Israel to send this year?

    • @Mirelelir
      @Mirelelir  25 днів тому +1

Israel could have sent pretty much ANY normal song, say something in a similar style to Unicorn, and I would have probably rated it a lot better. I guess spoiler for my (at some point) upcoming rankings of earlier years, but Israel will probably rank relatively high in quite a few of them.
Yes, the lyrics that ended up going to Eurovision don't contain references to current events anymore. My problem is, aside from that, this is basically still the exact same song they tried to send with the political lyrics, and everyone who will research this song even on a surface level would instantly find out about the political message it was supposed to have, even if it's not in the song anymore. The fact that even our local commentator stated during the postcard "Oh, this song was originally about October 7th, but it had to be changed and is now completely apolitical" didn't really help here either...
Now it is perfectly valid if you disagree with my stance on this, but I just can't rate a song higher purely on it's technical quality if I actively have to ignore that it was clearly intended as a political statement and only isn't because it would have been banned otherwise.

    • @ido_cohen

      @Mirelelir  25 днів тому +1

@@ido_cohen I'll have to re-evaluate those songs in this regard again when I get to ranking those years, as I don't think I remember at least "Face the Shadow" and to a lesser extend "1944" good enough to assess them right now.
For "Mama SC", I'm a bit conflicted if I should call it a propaganda song, as unlike Hurricane, it seems very apparent to me that the political messages in that weren't the decision of some comitee at the broadcaster or even worse directly at the government but are just Let 3's genuine style. Still, I will definitely re-evaluate that song as well, and might come to the conclusion that it also falls into that category.

    My faves
*Greece, Switzerland, Italy, Luxembourg, Armenia (also liked Croatia, Israel, Latvia, Ireland, U.K., France, Sweden, Cyprus and Germany).
    Opinion on Israel
*a very lovely song tbf. It isn’t a propaganda song, as in any case, it was always about lamenting her suffering, but the lyric changes were to make it for more people rather than hers, and it certainly felt a lot more relatable. My problem however, is that it is very American and manufactured, even though I miss the mid noughties female power ballads and there needs to be one like this. I’d like Israel to send a self made song in the future
    Opinion on the EBU:
I think they were trying their best and stating fair and square, but could have been clearer and I could have heard more from Martin before April. There also needs to be clearer guidelines for acts on both sides, so that Israeli delegates aren’t rude to other acts with opinion differences, and that commentators must act professionally (though Israel isn’t unique in that respect, and in 1995 and 2002, a couple of commentators said bad things about Israel’s entry but it didn’t always stop them getting points from these nations) but these acts respect EG for who she is and what her song is about.
    Opinion on Iceland:
Whilst Bashar is an interesting and unique artist, maybe it’s all for the greater good. He appropriated an unsavoury nationalist concept (that puts a lot of Israelis and Jews off the Palestine cause that they should support) Sophie-Ellis-Bextor style, and Israelis were also bemused about his act because he actually studied there, in the same school as Netta, and many LGBT Palestinians base in Israel proper, even if secretly. Though that being said, firstly there are Palestine nationalists in Israel’s parliament, and secondly, the small bit I heard of Wild West was musically nice and had good wordplay. However, I liked Scared Of Heights even though it had no competitive value - it was upbeat and fun.
    *Opinion on Netherlands
The music type is too naff for me but I appreciate what the song’s themes and wordplay are and understand why Joost’s difficulties would shorten his fuse.

I will TRY to keep this short:
    37. UK - Dizzy (Olly Alexander) - I'm sorry, but if you combine a Song that even bores his Fans to Death with a less-than-stellar Vocal Performance and a in theory cool Staging Idea that is completely overshadowed by an overly sexual Performance and Clothing that puts a weird Emphasis on his Crotch that can only be a last Place in my Opinion.
    36. Netherlands - Europapa (Joost Klein) - While I personally don't like the Song, I can see the Appeal. However, if you deliver a vocal Performance as bad as his and come with a Power Point Presentation of a Currywurst as Main Staging Element after grandiose Announcement of your Staging never having been done before and physically being impossible, there is little to put it in my good Graces.
    35. Iceland - Scared of Heights (Hera Björk) - Even as a new ESC Fan, Hera Björk is just such a Vibe, I love her. Too bad that the Song is as outdated. The Staging was more or less non-existent and the Singing also wasn't good enough for that to be the Saving Grace of this Entry.
    34. Finland - No Rules! (Windows95Man & Henri Piispanen) - Henri single-handedly keeps this from being last. Unfortunately, his great Vocal Performance can't save a Song that basicly only consists of it's Chorus - the "Verses" are miniscule. I also feel like the "Höhö Is he nude höhö"-Gimmick just didn't really work in the SF and GF due to the larger Stage. It honestly giving 2nd-Hand-Embarrassment.
    33. Spain - Zorra (Nebulossa) - As much as I want to like the Song due to it's great Message, I just can't get over the Staging. I just don't understand the Purpose of Man-Ass in a Song about female Empowerment and to me, it seems like a Shock-Value Staging. The Singing and Song are not able to repair the Damage the Staging does.
    32. Australia - One Mikali (Electric Fields) - For a Song that wants to demonstrate Unity of Australian Natives and the later... Immigrants, I don't think 2 Words in one of the countless native australian Languages is enough. It also doesn't help that save for the Digeridoo-Parts the Song is simply too empty too really take off. The same went for the Staging and the Vocals also just weren't there in the last Minute. I like the Idea, but it feels half-baked.
    31. Latvia - Hollow (Dons) - It's a well-done Pop-Ballad. That's all. The Vocals were good, as expected, but the Staging too basic to really land anywhere higher, just as the Song itself. It did deserve to qualify through as the Vocal Performance of that Semi in general was shockingly weak.
    30. Albania - TiTAN (Besa) - I'm still in deep Mourning for Zemren N'Dore. In my Opinion, the less Repetition you have in a Song, the better it becomes. I don't understand why you'd take out the wonderful Transition from the Rap Part to the Final Chorus out and replace it with a 2nd Chorus when the Song doesn't even have a distinct Bridge. A terrible Decision that led to Albania being a potential Underdog to being a save NQ. Especially since the Revamp also took away from the Impact of her Vocal Performance.
    29. Luxemburg - Fighter (Tali) - It's not like the Song or Performance is bad, but it's too basic and too save in my Opinion. Pleasant but save. Or it would be if the Verses and the Chorus went well together which they don't. It feels like the Song unintentionally hurls you into Changes that are not supposed to be there.
    28. Moldova - In The Middle (Natalia Barbu) - As you said, this Entry is particularly frustrating, because this is one of the Entries that really would have benefitted from a Revamp (actual Lyrics for the 2nd Verse and making the Violin Part more impactful). The Staging, while visually pleasant, was also empty and basicly non-existent. What kind of saves this is the Vocal Performance.
    27. France - Mon Amour (Slimane) - For me, this is basicly Évidemment 2.0 without everything that made me like Évidemment. What stays is a really basic and cliché "Oui Oui La Baguette" French Ballad. The close Camera Interaction was also a bit too much for me and led to that very weird 10s long Sequence where we only see the Audience. The Vocals were incredible through.

    • @nick3805
      @nick3805 28 днів тому +1

      26. Armenia - Jako (Ladaniva) - I have ADHD and even for me, the near-constant Lalalalalalalalala becomes obnoxious. Too much Lalalalalalalai and too little else. There is little else to say.
      25. Estonia - (Nendest) Narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) Midagi (5MIINUST x PUULUUP) - As much as I love this Song (that I can actually spell and say in one go by now), this is a Prime Example of copy-and-pasting the Staging from the NF not working. The Stage was simply too big for them to really fill it out and I feel like a few of the Guys actually knew that because the 1st One's Pronounciation sounded choppier and the 5M-Guy who sings the Bridge was seemingly trying to force a deeper Voice which was just super annoying.
      24. Cyprus - Liar (Silia Kapsis) - This falls in the neither good nor bad Area. The Song is catchy, but lacks a distinct Identity as does the Staging. The Camera-Work during the Dance Break was weird and we hardly saw anything of it. The Dancers taking their Shirts off also felt unneccessary. It really didn't add anything visually. Again an Entry that feels half-baked.
      23. Belgium - Before the Party's Over (Mustii) - It's really weird. With a Song that takes to much Time to build, you'd expect an explosive, mind-blowing Climax. And admittedly, it does sound good. But in the End, it remains him repeating the same Words over and over for a Minute. The Artistic Vision was also lost somewhere along the Way while the Vocal Performance was also shaky and dragged this down significantly. Song-wise, it would have been TOP13-worthy.
      22. Austria - We Will Rave (Kaleen) - Passed the Vibe Check, passed Dance Classes with an A with a Star, but I think to really carry the Song vocally, you need a strong Voice and a somewhat commanding Presence that Kaleen doesn't have to the Extend needed. Again a Case of a Song I really like being dragged down by the Performance, the 3rd so far, and the 3rd from Semi II.
      21. Germany - Always on the Run (Isaak) - I'm going to be blunt: I can't stand the Song, I*ve had it in my Playlist when it was announced in the NF, it flew out after the 2nd Listen due to annoying it was. However, it is a Song that was really elevated by Isaaks amazing Vocal Performance and a surprisingly good Staging, for German Standards, that is.
      20. San Marino - 11:11 (Megara) - Look, I really don't want to bash the poor Semi II that much, but this is the 4th Song that was immensely dragged down due to the awful Vocal Performance. I don't know what that was, but it was outright terrible and possibly the worst Vocals in Eurovision this Year. And the Competition is Windows95Man.
      19. Israel - Hurricane (Eden Golan) - Wether you like it or not, this is one of the very rare Ballads that I actually like. Propaganda-Song or not, Eden, for one Reason or another, can really deliver the Message of the Song well and the Staging was also more than just decent. If you want to blame anyone for me liking Hurricane, you should blame the other Artists of the Semi II, because Edens actually good Vocal Performance felt like an Oasis in a Desert of seemingly uncountable sub-par Vocal Performances.
      18. Poland - The Tower (Luna) - Admittedly, before the Rehearsal Clips, I did have this dead-last, but that Staging blew me away. The Vocals were still a bit shaky, but overall better than expected. I wouldn't have been uncontent with this qualifying, even if I do consider the Song to be incredibly boring.
      17. Italy - La Noia (Angelina Mango) - My best Friend from Kindergarten to 4th Grade was called Angelina, Mangos are one of my favourite Fruits, so this should click, but it somehow doesn't and I can't even tell you why. It sounds like something I should like, but I somehow don't and am honestly confused about that.
      16. Serbia - Ramonda (Teya Dora) - It starts off awesomely and it could have been a TOP10 Candidate in my List, was it not for the seemingly endless Repetition of "Lila Ramonda" which is really a Shame, because visually, it's definitely ahead of Veronika. But overall, it will have to be satisfied with the Position of being Veronika's little Sister that is yet to fully bloom.
      15. Dennmark - Sand (Saba) - This one actually ended up being this high merely due to the Fact that it's a decent Song that I like to listen to from Time to Time competently sung in a vocally incredibly weak Semi. I don't actually like it all that much.
      14. Azerbaijan - Özünle Apar (Fahree, Ilkin Dovlatov) - I like the Song, it's calming but the Mugham Singing still keeps it decently interesting. The MV definitively helps you understand the Direction they were going for with the Staging, but it didn't really work admittedly. I'm still not a Fan of the Collab. Fahree's Vocals were only decent and only really good during the Mugham Parts, but that was what Ilkin was there for specifically for, but he didn't have any other Role. No Disrespect, but they took away from each other.

    • @nick3805

      13. Georgia - Firefighter (Nutsa Buzaladze) - I still don't really know how I feel about the Georgian Entry. One one Hand, I feel obligated to appreciate the seriously outstanding Performance, outstanding in Terms of Singing, Dance and Visuals, a whole Package, but the Song... I still haven't warmed up to it. It basicly has the same Issue as "Fighter" where it feels like the different Parts of the Song don't go as well together as they should while still being too basicly to really stand out on it's own... I'm confused.
      12. Sweden - Unforgettable (Marcus & Martinus) - It's a really good Dance Number that was visually well down, and aside from the Song playing a bit too save in my Opinion, there really isn't much to criticize. Even if the Guys aren't the best Singers, the simply have the Charisma to still put on a great Performance, with them being Twins giving them a unique Dynamic that few Acts have.
      11. Czechia - Pedestal (Aiko) - Probably the biggest Grower from this Season that climbed from being in the Bottom 5 for most of the Season to barely missing the TOP10. The Reason? Her Performance improved significantly visually and vocally. It was neither Oasis nor Desert in that Semi, it was somewhere in the upper Middle, and I would have loved for her to qualify.
      10. Portugal - Grito (Iolanda) - This is a very odd Case because althrough I love the Song and the Performance, I would not go out of my Way to just listen to it. Probably because the Song itself is a bit strange - it feels relatively fast-paced for a Ballad, yet stays relatively tame for most of the Song and while sounding modern and traditional at the same TIme. It's really a weird one.
      9. Greece - Zari (Marina Satti) - If Pedestal was the greatest Grower, this is a close 2nd. I always appreciated the unique Structure of the Song, but admittedly, it was a bit jarringIt used to be in the TOP3, but got downgraded for not being a One-Take-Performance when it was grandiously announced as such and a slightly underwhelming vocal Performance.
      8. Malta - Loop (Sarah Bonnici) - This is basicly the Equivalent of Firefighter with a bit more Refinement. Loop is a show-off and that's great, because that is how it keeps the various Parts of the Song together without it being jarring (althrough I'm still not a Fan of the Transition into the Chorus). Sarah put on a great Vocal Performance and the 2-Part-Bridge (Dance Break + High Note) was definitively a Highlight of the whole Semi. It's a Crime this came dead-last.
      7. Ukraine - Theresa & Maria (Alyona Alyona & Jerry Heil) - Is there really much I could say? It really is one of the many great Ukrainian Entries that combine Tradition, Modern Sounds and an important Message while also adding a great and impactful Staging. A very good Entry after Last Year's Disappointment.
      6. Lithuania - Luktelk (Silvester Belt) - A very low-key Dance Song that still manages to keep some Form of Energy through the loud Sequences in the Chorus. It has a very refined, aesthetically pleasant Staging and a simple, but still effective Choreography. Vocally, there could have been a bit more going on, but a Song called "Wait" should be somewhat laid-back, no?
      5. Norway - Ulveham (Gate) - Such a strong Song, impactful Performance and Vocal Delivery. Definitively not the worst Song of this Year's Eurovision, but perhaps one that is too niché to mobilize large Audiences at Eurovision. Unfortunate, but good for us - Norway seemingly wants to hold it's Record for the most last Places for a while. That makes the German ESC Performance less embarrassing.
      4. Croatia - Rim Tim Tagi Dim (Baby Lasagna) - A Rock Song that combines Rock with traditional Elements - I suspect that it's Popularity might have actually hurt Ulveham greatly. Baby Lasagna, like Aiko, improved significantly as a Singer and Performance over the Season and brought an amazing Song with a lot of cool Elements - to think it barely made it to the National Selection of the NF - It once again cast Doubt on some Broadcasters' Competency to chose ESC Entries.
      3. Switzerland - The Code (Nemo) - A wild Mix of wildly different Genres delivered expertly in Terms of Vocals and Staging - I was admittedly worried about the Vocals due to the Ton of Movement, but he did really well in the Final. A deserved Winner with an amazing, out-of-the-box Song. I would have wished for a bit more toned-down Performance, but I guess you can not have everything.
      2. Slovenia - Veronika (Raiven) - I don't know, but this one just clicks for me. It's a great, impactful Pop-Power-Ballad about History, Empowerment and finding Truth and Peace. It's a great Motive, really, and the ambitionous Visual Concept does the Rest, even if there are Budget Restraints. Raiven put on a Show. I will refrain from calling her robbed - I'm just glad she qualified at all.
      1. Ireland - Doomsday Blue (Bambie Thug) - Perhaps no Surpise if you actually read everything. Little Repetition, a Ton of Genres combined, a strong Theme, expertly put-together Visuals and a great Vocal Performance that goes beyong the usual demonstrative High Notes. This Song checks all Boxes of Things that attract me in a Song. Deservedly in the TOP10 and the best Result for Ireland in like 25 Years. I hope they build on this. it's just a Shame I can't go to Bambie's Concert...

Should have been Ireland, Ukraine, Estonia, Armenia, Switzerland, Croatia, Norway, Latvia ... and the rest probably should have been told to go to a mid EDM festival, this is supposed to be Eurovision. Find some bands doing something original.
I'm still waiting for someone to admit that "The Code" won because it had the right politics for the moment (no, I'm not criticizing the politics, just the clicheness of the song), otherwise it was kind of a mess with an annoying hook.

I guess my taste can be summarized as "consistently expect totally inconsistent takes on similar songs" - and I don't even know why, some songs just work for me and others don't, despite being similiar. 🤷
As for Nemo winning because of the right politics...I don't know. The fact that even Albania and Azerbaijan, probably some of the last European countries you would expect to be pro-non-binary gave it 12 points tells me that this win might have actually been on the merits of the song, and not because of the right politics (at least not only, it could have been a factor of course).

Hurricane/October Rain is proof Israel is awful at propaganda music (even some of Israel's newspapers read that song to filth and one said Harbo Darbo was a better song, which is saying a lot). There are countries that are at least "entertaining" when they do it. This is just a cheap copy of Russia 2015 and most people with average media literacy can see right through it.

Singing about the tragedy of 10/7 isn't "propaganda"

And "Mama SC", "1944" and "Face the Shadow" aren't propaganda?

It's very well produced, and the performance was good......BUT.....it's fairly dull to listen to. Put it this way, if this came on the radio, I'd nod off.

Underrated comment, I am so so mad with these ratings! I hate every single one! Especially Malta and Cyprus being so low just to name a few! wtf! This rating sucks! For real!
