Would recommend greasing before putting back together, will make it easier to take apart next time, will operate smoother and prevents parts seizing and getting stuck (like the screws). Although you probably don't leave yours as long as mine between sharpening 😂

My Felco no.9 (for left handers) were £28 when I bought them, now they are £65, yikes! Will be giving my 6 year old pair this treatment. Thanks for the lovely video.

They make them for left handers? I didn't know that. I'm terrible at sharpening things, and I sometimes wonder if it is because I'm sharpening them with my left hand, and they're right-handed tools.

    Thank you, Katrina ❤
For years I've avoided having special secateurs because a certain someone in my life regularly misplaces/misuses them and I couldn't take the heartbreak every time I found a pair buried in a pot, or similar 🙄😂
But when I got my tax return last year, I finally bought my Felcos, which I keep safely hidden! This year's tax return shall now be spent on some Niwaki bits and bobs, which I hope to also use on some other garden tools. Having never sharpened tool blades on my own before, I was after some tips and came across this video. Your gentle, calm approach, quietly spoken manner and obvious enjoyment of your vocation are such a pleasure to watch and listen to. I felt both inspired and relaxed after this 😊 Now I am subscribed and looking forward to watching your other videos, as well. Thanks again! 💚

Thank you! I'm feeling even more embarrassed than you at the state of my secateurs. You've motivated me to take mine to pieces and give them a really good clean and sharpen. It's not a Felco but I have a second new pair so I think it's worth risking not being able to get them back to together if I can get anything like the results you have.

Thanks for your inspiration. I’ve got some tools that might need some attention. One in particular which has a spring identical to the one on your secateur. (That’s a new term for me, call them pruners)
This one is my wife’s inheritance from her grandfather and have fewer pieces, and looks antique.
At his funeral (20 years ago), my wife suggested I trim his grape vines which had grown a bit wild. It was something he had kept well maintained but had gone unattended for a while. Many of his friends came by and took trimmings.
His secateurs were quite sharp and we’re a pleasure to use.
I think they could use a little sharpening and cleaning.

I did not know that they were called “secateurs”. On this side of the pond we use the term “pruners”.
I also like the term “spanners” for what we commonly refer to as “wrenches”.
I remember as a child reading Sherlock Holmes - he’d ask for a “torch” when he needed to illuminate something in a dark place. A battery powered lamp, as it turns out.

Very nice. It is still winter in Montana, but we are having a 20 degree higher in temperatures than is usual. Looking at install a green house in very early spring as the snow might be all gone soon. I would also oil all metal surfaces, in particular where wear is evident, before assembly. It would not only protect the metal, but make operation easier. Too bad we can't all sit down for tea. In Denmark, we also did that, and it is sorely missed.

Hi, Katrina. New subscriber here. Ive been loving your channel and learning alot. Your English allotment aesthetic is just wonderful to watch as an American. We just dont have anything like it here. May I suggest an addition to your tool kit? A brass wire brush. That stone will get more rounded as time goes on. The brush will get in the hard to reach spots. Brass is weaker than steel so it wont wear out the metal. As a machinist that cleans and sharpens tools for a living, you did an excellent job on that clean and sharpen job. Pro quality! :)

Steel wool will do the trick, and it gets into corners. Or pretty much anything that is softer than metal and harder than the gunk you want to remove. The scratchy side of a kitchen scrubber should work, too.

I’m a professional full time gardener. I use my secateurs pretty much everyday of my life .they are a cheap pair I bought in a supermarket about five years ago , can’t remember the last time I sharpened them and the only lubrication they get is a quick squirt of WD40 about once a month and they cut fine . What is important is to always pull open the two sides of the stem you are cutting so that the sides of the blade are not being pinched by them .This makes all the difference

    • @mm9773
      @mm9773 11 місяців тому

I see where you’re coming from - we have two pairs of secateurs in the house, one is from the Sixties or Seventies and has been absolutely mangled by improper sharpening, the other pair is from the Eighties or Nineties and has never been sharpened. Guess what, they’re both cutting fine, i.e. they still make fairly clean cuts with little effort.
Now they’re both Felcos, and I do believe they’re better than others, but a) that mainly applies to cutting very thick and hard stuff and b) a huge advantage is that I can still get parts: I’m planning to replace the blade on the older one as a favour and surprise for my dad.
But yes, they’re not kitchen knives and they don’t need a lot of attention.

Cheers :-) Not n-picking, just observations...
Videos like this are always a good reminder to service the gardening tools but I wouldn't go to the expense of Felco products as they are almost 3 x times the price of some other excellent quality secateurs, including as recommended by GW...not that I follow everything they tell us!
Why not thorough clean every part and definitely lightly oil ALL moving parts before reassembly, including threaded parts...??
I always cleaned every tool after use and Never Ever left them otherwise! Neat washing-up liquid could be applied to stubborn grime and left overnight then less elbow-grease would be needed.
Perhaps a flat sweep, or two, to a 5-degree angle across the back of the blade(s) (none-bevelled edge) first and then check for blade sharpness..??
Eye protection is essential too, especially with coiled-springs...or place a cloth around them prior to removal.

I owned Felcos for years, took them to bits and sharpened them regularly ... then I discovered Japanese-steel secateurs which I find dramatically better. Cut better, stay sharper longer, and have a catch that you can open easily. I find that the catch on Felcos frequently closes by itself and can't be operated with bulky gloves on - Okatsune No.103 same price as Felco Model 2. Crean Mate (SIC) is amazing, recommend that.

I was looking at the state of mine yesterday, and they are as bad. It's far too easy to think sure I'm done using X tool, and throw them on a shelf in the shed. But it really does pay to give them a good clean.
At least you know that the next time you need them, they will be in good working order. If you need to give them a good clean before you can use them. You're also more likely to put that job off until another day/week.
Cheers for the reminder to get that sorted.

So this is very timely as I was wondering if there was a good tutorial on how to use it. Fantastic you are as always. Loving your Run and Fly dungees too. I am saving up for some Duluth trading gardening bibs as they are fabric covered in vegetables. Happy day to you from an equally wet and windy Wales xx

After seeing your post that they needed cleaning I was hoping you would do a video on the process. Thank you! Now that it's getting time to start doing yard work again I was just thinking that my trimmers needed some upkeep and did not know how to go about it.

Great informative video, I'll definitely get myself a Crean Mate, It looks very useful. One small point though, a Phillip screwdriver has the cross head, the one shown in the video was a flat head screwdriver.
Subscribed, looking forward to watching the back catalogue and future videos, Katrina.
