I'm sitting 12' away from the local Gambles quail, that I can take three with one shot. And that from an 18" shotty, with no need for dogs. Happy hunting, and seasons greetings.
I live in North Carolina and the quail have disappeared. Gone. I've heard no discussion, no plan on bringing them back. Hugely disappointing with all the money we put into wildlife conservation.
It's nice your building and supporting an endangered free range bird. Hats off to you. I'm new to all of these breeding programs. It does interest me a lot, like I am sure it interests a lot of hunter's who enjoy meat. Like in the comments. Thanks.
Are you talking about the chickens in cages that turn to cannibalism, or the barns were they've sores on their stomachs cause they're unable to walk. These birds get a good and long few years in the wild. A lot even die of natural causes. The chicken, which I believe you're referring to lives for only a few months. Most of them spent disabled on the ground suffering from growth pains. I've no problem with buying off the shelf bird. I (support) my farmers. I am not going to pretend that these free range birds don't have a better life, though. They definitely do and if you're going to give good land stewards and conservationist a hard time, you can at least take the time to educate yourself on this issue. How did you want him to kill his food for you; electrified, boiled alive or gased? You should be thanking people like him, not condemning him and refusing to understand what he's actually doing. What he's doing comes at a huge cost to him personally. Both time and money. I guess you could say he's raising, and protecting extremely expensive chickens. That's a righteous legacy and he must be very proud to pass it down the line, again. Hopefully he sees this and invites me out one day as I am West Texan till I die. Yum.

Was stationed at NAS Kingsville for a few years, and wasn’t exactly fond of it. Leave it to Sig to make me miss South Texas. Beautifully shot.
