I genuinely can't see why Burton would do this other than for trying to set up any kind of excitement for a potential 3rd movie. Like why wouldn't Lydia be speaking with her Mom following her dads passing, why do we have literally no information on her now other than the fact that she's still alive, and why was Delores in the movie at all if she was instantly going to be thrown away the second she gets to Beetlejuice?
The best thing about the sequel for me was it (mostly) wasn't trying to be the first one. It didn't feel like a "OMGG HE SAIDTHE THINGGG" type of movie. But, its just my opinion.
Oh 100%! They put it full of eater eggs for the fans, but I’m pretty sure you can watch the sequel without ever watching the first one, which is the goal really
I feel Lydia's demeanour in the sequel shows how much life has taken a toll on her. She being a single mom; putting Astrid in private school; on top of that, her career relays heavily on media relevancy. She might had to side step her own life preferences(being blunt, nonchalant etc.) just to get food on the table. Her taking up substance abuse made sense as a way to cope with stress. I agree Lydia accepting Rory's proposal is nonsensical, however seeing how much control Rory had over her, Lydia might have thought it was the only way to not lose a business partner and maintain status quo
Lydia's boyfriend in the sequel def feels like the writers took traits from musical Delia and Otho with his guru-like personality and ties to spirituality and life coaching
The reason Charles isn’t in the movie is because he was having legal troubles with very inappropriate things and Tim Burton didn’t want him in the film again for that reason
When Beetlejuice and Lydia basically team-up and go to the Netherworld together to stop Jeremy and the Netherworld cops on their case, clearly had some of the cartoon vibes. In the cartoon BJ and Lydia are close friends who go on adventures together.
One of the must disappointing moments from the sequel was Astrid and her dad reuniting. The movie’s emotional core revolves around this moment. I’m not exactly sure why the two most pivotal moments in the movie got the least attention. The emotional climax of the dynamic between Lydia, Astrid and the dad/ex-husband, and Beetlejuice’s ex wife finally finding him and being no threat whatsoever. This movie was fun but filled with three major missed opportunities. Those two and then Beetlejuice’s ex wife not missing her ring finger - the same ring finger Beetlejuice has in his pocket in the first movie!!! How did they screw that up?!?!
That‘s because it is not so much about the story. Someone in the comments rightfully said, this movie was mainly self-therapy for Burton, and it is pretty obvious for anyone who knows Burton‘s style and interests. It may sound cheesy, but Richard is portrayed as a lover of old campy horror movies, Mario Bava is quoted more than once throughout the sequel. He was also eaten by piranhas. Richard is Burton‘s former drive, the energy that made him produce his early movies, but got lost along the way. Lydia is Burton (he said so multiple times in interviews), and she has fallen into the clutches of a superfluous, greedy industry, portrayed by Rory.
Lydia is a middle aged woman with a teen daughter who has suffered a fair amount of tragedy, and she sees ghosts. How exactly is she still the same person she was 36 years ago?
@@annevanderelst247 fair point. As person the exact same age as Lydia, I can see her being so bogged down with life that she not have the bandwidth to say no. Also she is probably a little lonely too. Remember these are thoughts I have because we are the same age, not because they were clearly characterized in the movie.
I only spotted one similarity, Astrid’s plot with her dead dad. I’m amazed you spotted more. Maybe it’s me but, I do like that Astrid had closure with her dad. It makes sense because they’re in the Neitherworld. The downside like the musical it was also rushed. Seeing as Lydia has the advantage of being the main character they should have taken their time. Also Lydia’s mom is alive. I’m personally neutral on that one. I do think the ending was rushed especially with Beetlejucie’s ex wife.
When me and my friends went to watch beetlejuice beetlejuice we discussed the direct quotes, nods and references to the musical, kid you not, the whole half hour car ride home and some after. There is sooo much in it. I couldnt type it all out
I love Beetlejuice in all the many forms he comes in. The original film was something quite special, especially how Keaton crafted the character with the help of Ve Neill. The cartoon did a lot to make BJ and Lydia into an iconic duo. The musical took both of the two previous versions, sprinkled on some Broadway magic, and created something quite different from but just as special as the first film. The sequel movie is a lot of fun, but it's mostly a bit of self-therapy for Burton, who is trying to get his groove back.
That is the best fitting critique I have read so far.😂 Yes, the sequel is mainly Burton going crazy while finding his yellow brick road. I personally don‘t complain, because I enjoyed it, but it does help to be aware of the fact, and not expect a plot driven movie.
Those who grew up with the Animated series would tell you that Beetlejuice from the musical was a beautiful combo of the movie and cartoons Beetlejuice(s). Its silly and for kids but creepy-cute.. It's straming now on Tubi, so if you want, give it a watch.
@@oliverzwatermelongumIt was a reference to Peter Jackson‘s „Braindead“ (the baby itself), and the baby biting Lydia‘s leg until she bleeds was a reference to a scene in „Barbarella“ from 1968.
I would say the girls scout thing is a stretch too because it's annoyingly common for girls to be in the scouts here in the states. Like there's not many other options (specifically in small towns) for girls to join if they want to be part of a group that's not church related. At least in my experience growing up in a small town. If I wanted to join any other group like dance or whatever it was 45+ minute drive just to get to it.
How can a sequel to a movie steal from a musical that takes inspiration from the same movie that the sequel is based on? This is an illogical argument.
My thoughts exactly. Since i saw the trailerand the funeral scene i was like: if this ends up at the start at the movie that's straight up carbon copy. Then i noticed the girl scout and dead mom comment and the fact that Astrid's story is IDENTICAL to Musical Lydia's story, only without the age gap. I haven't noticed the shark and piranha thing with Astrid's grandpa and dad so that's one more reason.
As a fan of both movies, the cartoon show and the musical, I must say: Burton is clearly not a fan of the musical and has at best seen snippets of it. The most likely reason he‘s not a fan is that Lydia is his self-insert, if you will. He didn‘t create the character, but what he made of her in the first movie became something he identified with, and movie Lydia is simply different to the musical one. This is also the reason, Lydia from the sequel was portrayed the way she was. This is a disillusioned Burton, who had somehow lost his spark and, over the years, turned into the exact thing he had opposed at the beginning of his career. Burton had fallen into the fangs of the exploitative, uncreative movie industry (I‘m being purposefully dramatic), and so Lydia has become a ghost hunter, someone who exploits spirits for financial benefit and fame - which she vehemently opposed in the first movie. That being said, Burton didn‘t write the screenplay to the sequel, but I can imagine that both he as well as WB (who indeed own the rights to both the movie as well as the musical) allowed the screenwriters to include some references. The only one I believe came directly from Burton may have been the one about Lydia‘s mother not being dead. As for yet another sequel, Burton already said, that he wouldn‘t want to do it, if it happens, then with another director. He is done with the story. It was important for him to get back into this world and allow himself to reignite his creative flame by making yet another visual feast full of movie references, with the storyline only being on second or third place. He is not and never was mainly a storyteller, he is a very visual creator.
I dont think they actively took from the musical. I do think there were references to it, though, like Lydia saying her mom wasn't dead. I feel like that was a blatant jab at the musical. I think Lydia and Astrid actually meeting the dead father and having an awkward sit diwn was also more of a jab at the play than it was a reference. Its really hard to say because so much time passed between movies and there has been a lot of other media that could have made its way into the minds of the writers. I do think the shrunken head guys were in this movie because of the play. That character gained a ton of viral popularity that this movie obviously picked up on.
@@annevanderelst247 I don't really think they acknowledge it at all. All of these are extreme reaches to connect this movie to the poorly made adaptation of the original
@@professorwright1428 out of curiosity, have you seen the musical? 'Cause I can understand that you're not a big fan, but to say that it's poorly made is a bit extreme
I fin it interesting that you talked about the reconciliation part. I recently saw a video which talked about the story of Beetlejuice the musical and they said that the writers were thinking Lydia does meet her dead mom on the Netherworld, but after thinking it throughly they found the idea would end up "too cheezy". And would you see that? They did exactly that in the sequel. I'm not trying to shame on the sequel, it was actually a good movie with a lot of vibes from the original, but I think I just didn't understand that part? like, it felt too small to be so important (They literally found the dead dad, please) but at the same time I was supposed to feel something there. I also didn't like Lydia's boyfriend and Astrid's love interest. Like, if you are going to have a man betray a woman, please try for it to be just one(? and they both died jaja But that's all. I think I would have liked more if Lydia's boyfriend was actually really in love with her, and the proposal just happened because he felt bad by what Astrid said and he wanted to prove" he genuinely wanted to be with her, maybe on a very Charles and Delia musical thing. Either way, I'm not mad they took the same formula for the sequel as the musical, they saw it worked and it did. But maybe a little recognition to the musical writers would have been nice. Sorry it's too long, I have no teather kids friends so I needed that out of my chest jaja
Haha all good, let it all out! 😘 I agree that the musical’s choice to not find dead mom in the Netherworld is stronger. For me it makes Lydia and Charles’s reconciliation way more impactful
That scene really didn’t make sense looking back on it because they were actively trying to save Astrid’s life and simultaneously being chased by the netherworld PD, but hey let’s just take an awkward coffee break and chat with the dead dad. There honestly was no point in them including the dad considering he didn’t even help them in the grand scheme of things. It was cute when he said “you may not see me but I’m there watching over you” but it still felt forced. The musical did it way better. I still really enjoyed the movie tho. Also yeah why did both of their relationships have to end in flames?? At that point they shouldn’t have even written in a boyfriend for Lydia. Even if they wouldn’t have ended up married by the end of the movie, they still could’ve given her a SO that was genuine yet comical.

I thought I was the only one to notice that! I do definitely think there were more direct references to the cartoon then the musical, more likely so because Burton was an executive director on the cartoon
I think the Do You Hear that Sound is a nod to the cartoon. I didn’t watch the cartoon much cuz my parents didn’t allow me growing up but now I watch it and it gives off that vibe.
I have heard Burton doesn’t like the musical and I honestly think he and Keaton made the sequel to reclaim the character in the public’s eyes. That is literally only speculation though, quote me on NOTHING.
i think you're looking WAY to hard into this the reason why the shark was chosen is because the actor who played charles deetz in the first beetlejuice is a registed sex offender and the piranha one i just think that was a stylistic choice on tim burtons part for a cool makeup effect and also just to look cool i don't know if he had a hand in the musical or watched it but i don't know
I had the absolute pleasure of getting to see the musical live earlier this year and I absolutely ADORED IT!!!!!!!!!!! I also loved this sequel and idk for sure if Burton isn't a fan of the show cause he gave it his blessing and they even had a super sweet message for Tim in the program saying "We want to thank Tim Burton for his imagination, which has inspired us all throughout our many years working on this show. We are grateful that he cleared a path for us to play in the extraordinary world of his creation". I really hope there's no ill will between the musical cast and crew and Tim cause I would love it if him,Winona and Michael went and saw it while it's on tour!!! Geena Davis and Catherine O'Hara saw it when it was on Broadway and they both really loved it!!!!! I also am gonna be seeing the show again in December in Boise which I am so unbelievably excited to see it live again in the same year as the sequel!!!!!! Plus one of the things I believe is a reference to the musical which I totally acknowledge is also a reference to the cartoon (which I haven't seen) is the brief team up between Beetlejuice and Lydia and also there is a point where he uses his thumb with fire on it to fuse the bomb entrance to the Neitherworld and to me that sort of felt like a reference to how he has fire powers in the show!!!! I also thought the message at the end was similar to the show where Lydia wants to spend her days with the people she loves similar to how at the end of the show she says "I'm gonna take a chance on life with the people I love" I also feel like in a way the musical kind of made Beetlejuice popular and relevant again like sure the movie was still popular before the show started but like I feel like the musical really brought him back to the spotlight of popularity at least that's my opinion about it!!!!
Having recently watched the sequel, as well as recently being cast as Beetlejuice in a production of the musical, this video was exactly what I was craving. (Also, I’m not gonna lie, I love the cartoon haha)
I promise you, you don't need a new phone. Even if your current phone gets damaged to the point where it can't even make calls or send texts (one of my old phones was run over by a truck, Mom's touch screen was completely shattered), you can just get a used phone. I want to get a used phone, if my current one ever gets totaled.
It was probably done intentionally, though. To not feel like it stole from the musical, but more, putting elements of everything from that world to create one big story. There was even a little bit of the cartoon in there that was made after the original came out. My personal opinion on this is, yes, there were bits of it in there, but overall, its a world Tim Burton created, and so the musical and the cartoon took from him, in a sense. He probably liked what the musical did and thought to tie those in back into his world. It's a compliment, really. If I created the musical and saw parts of it that ended up in the movie, I'd be excited!
Details like this make me wonder if Burton and Keaton actually hate the musical, or if it was just a series of TAKE TAHT WE ARE DOING IT BETTER!s Either way, love the musical to death and undeath, and enjoyed the hell out of the sequel.
Yeah I have heard that Tim Burton wasn't the musical's hugest fan, and there may be some love lost between Brightman and Burton/the original cast. I've heard rumors of Winona Ryder being a massive Beetlebabes shipper and the filmmakers playing into that with her in mind, but I can't confirm all that
STILL annoyed that they mentioned Emily Deetz being alive in passing, then doing NOTHING with it, and Jeffrey Jones being PAID to use his likeness despite being killed off (they could have done it without using his image and needing to pay him) after what he did.
Don’t know if someone commented this, probably, but Charlie’s death was inspired by Tim Burton’s most feared way of dying; being in a plane crash in the ocean and being eaten by a shark.
if anyone knows of a full slime tutorial of the musical out there PLEASE tell me I cannot find any on this god forsaken website and Im studying it for a school exam 😭
@@Ryucallie do you mean that the musical is a sequel of the original film? Because that’s not the case! Nor is the movie sequel following the musical. That’s a large diaphragm condenser mic (at least is looks like one) and you could easily just put it on a stand and it would pick you up fine even if you move around. You only need to hold a dynamic mic like a sm58 that singers often use on stage. The pick up pattern is much smaller in order to reduce feedback from the stage monitors.

THANK YOU when I walked out of the theatre after seeing the sequel, I told my friend that the movie just sort of took certain ideas and plot points from the musical
In your other video you called Jenna Hollywood’s local goth girl or something but Jenna Ortega is not goth!! I’m so sick of Hollywood putting her in alternative rolls when she is not alternative whatsoever. Wednesday was so forced. However I will admit the second movie outdid my expectations. It was really funny and I enjoyed watching it. However it also felt like there were too many storylines going on at once. I went with my younger cousin and it was kind of hard to follow. We didn’t really need the whole Beetejuic’s ex-wife substory. It didn’t feel that important and it kind of took away from the rest of the movie being about interfamily issues. It felt like they just needed something to add on more run time.
Yes the ex wife could’ve easily been cut out, I agree! Apparently the actress is Tim Burton’s partner, so that’s probably why there was a role for her in this movie
I had way less sympathy for Astrid than for Lydia. Both of them lost a parent and then their single parents get into relationships with crazy people. But Lydia’s father seems to have a downright maliciously neglectful relationship with his daughter and Delia is hopelessly unkind to Lydia and refuses to understand her. Lydia is a more misunderstood mother who is traumatised and taken advantage of by her new partner. Astrid’s antagonistic relationship with her seems pettier
I don't know if you just forgot, didn't notice or just ignored it, but in the new movie Lydia directly says that her mom isn't dead, which ruins the main plot point of the musical (I think, tbh I never watched the musical)
A good ending (I liked the movie) could've been a double wedding, so that Jenna Ortega is willingly marrying the boy maybe (having it be willing would be wierd/surprising, and the family tension between them would actually factor into the afterlife plot and not be immediately dropped because they need to help each other.) This would actually make the ending even more "messy," however in a way that actually feels connected to the story and emotions of most of the movie. Could include a joke by Beetlejuice about how they really have a love pentagram thing going on - She's marrying that loser, but now she's marrying me, but my ex wants to marry me, and her daughter's marrying him. Loved how the movie ended with her having an absurd, sudden, saccharine marriage and baby with some boy in Romania, I just think they should've just not had the demon baby and just ended it like that, it would've felt more creepy. It's just such a freaky ending, although committing to it would increase this, no demon baby. Maybe that still happens. Or maybe she does marry the ghost boy, maybe he's not a villian who legitimately wants to be with her, and you make it more of a romance-horror. Sure, villians are fun, but thematically it'd be a much stronger theme if the Mom has to save her daughter who's turning against her by marrying the first boy she likes. IDK, I'd be worried about young girls getting a Romeo/Juliet style bad message from that, but maybe it could be tweaked. Especially if she doesn't end up with him in the afterlife, even though that'd be a crazy ending. Maybe the dream wake-up thing still happens, with the Mom realizing that the tight, "aha! I just read the rulebook, and there's no rule that a dog can't play basketball!" type ending is actually false, and the worst case scenario happens.
This not-quite-broke Millennial will wait for it to be available digitally all the same, but I would personally comfortably wager on the musical being faithful to the original, and to Burton's... calling it a body of work is pretentious, but it's the best term I can think of on the spot... that consistently has fairly similar plot structures, characters, and devices. As to whether Burton in turn took cues from it for the sequel or not, it's the random tidbits such as the girl scout that would have me lean towards a hesitant yes, rather than the aforementioned structural aspects. And whether an iPhone 8 with plosives or an iPhone 16 with a pop filter... that's a sweet sweatshirt 😍
I actually disagree on that one! The musical uses the same characters and premise as the original film, but the narrative is very different. And not written by Tim Burton. So for the sequel, a film that is a product of Tim Burton, to be very similar to the plot of the musical, does feel like he got inspired by someone else’s work
Is it a rip off when the people who made the first movie also worked on the musical and the second movie? Tim Burton owns both so he can use both, this isn't stealing.
Can we just all say, why’re making it sound like it’s a ripoff, it’s the same franchise and those of us who didn’t get to watch the musical are just happy to get another movie, to be honest I don’t see what the fuss is all about considering it’s just cool to see a whole new movie as a sequel to the original
Lmao same here, the whole "I don't fit in, I don't like my mom and I'm into a guy who is not what it seems" was more likely a Wednesday without the goth aesthetic to me.
Maybe the shark reference alone would be a stretch, but astrids dad also died by swimming with piranhas? Imma just add this here: I didnt catch the "dead mum" thing of that statement but more as a nod to the anecdote lydia tells the maitlands in the musical. About her mum doing these haunted houses in summer (so noone would expect it) and having wildly inappropriate costumes for them. Like the ghost of edgar allan poe. I think they word for word give that backstory detail to astrids dad
Never wanted to see the musical. I was under the influence that Astrid was what led the movie. Like, yeah, B wants to reunite with the first person who got to see him without the tricks or whatnot. But without Astrid wanting to D word would it have been possible? Given, she didn’t want to D word but was tricked. Hence the reason Lydia had to sign a contract this time. Because B wants out and he was already promised so…. He better get out in the Trilogy lol
I thought the second movie failed hard. All of the plot and resolution is done by men. This is a story about a mother and daughter where things happen at them. When Adelbert finally does something of her own will it is to drive immediately directly to a man who will lead her to the plot. She never even gets to have a meaningful conversation with her mother until they meet the father who does the reconciling for them. It's really, really bad. The only woman with real agency is Beetlejuice's ex-wife who is the villain of the story. To top it off most of the jokes flop, the nostalgia bait is blatant, and the story just feels so divorced from the original. I didn't like it and I don't understand how it is getting the praise it is getting.
I've seen a lot of people mention that this is one of the greatest movies ever, but i really didn't like it that much. I hope that they do better with the final installment. I wish I could've seen the Broadway show before they stopped it.
The Beetlejuice musical is currently doing a month long run in Norrköping, Sweden, with a transfer to Lidköping at the end of October, making it Beetlejuice's European debut. The theatre company did a fun little thing where for one day they did a triple feature by screening both Beetlejuice movies, and wrapping it up with the musical. I can't say if the Norrköping production is good as I haven't seen it yet (I'm going in 2 weeks), but it has gotten decent to good reviews; so it could be worth looking into to feed your Beetlejuice craving while waiting for a west end debut. Just a quick heads up that it is in Swedish, so while you'll still know the story, you won't get the English lyrics you're used to.

You forgot to mention that Betlegeuse's first name was mentioned in both, and it's the same name..Lawerence.
Oooh I didn’t clock that! Nice one!
I didn't notice when it was, it said??
@@NashTalksTheatreYeah wtf are they talking about
@@cannibalbunny TBF, I somehow missed the part where dead Charles said he was Charles in beginning on my first watch
No, that‘s not his name in the movie.
Yeah, he loves working with Jenna Ortega a lot I think
That is the best fitting critique I have read so far.😂
Yes, the sequel is mainly Burton going crazy while finding his yellow brick road.
Am I the only one who felt like the sequel had weird “fetish-y” moments? The birth scene and inflation scene were SO. WEIRD.
DUDE I THOUGHT THE SAME THING !!! it was so uncomfortable to watch!!! swear to god that mustve been a fetish because WHAT WAS THAT...
@@oliverzwatermelongumIt was a reference to Peter Jackson‘s „Braindead“ (the baby itself), and the baby biting Lydia‘s leg until she bleeds was a reference to a scene in „Barbarella“ from 1968.
@@DrDeadsy42 your ability to correctly cite those references is beyond impressive. You must be a great conversationalist! 😃
@@AndrewWood94 Thank you, but I‘m just old and like movies. 😆
Oooh ok fair! I guess because it was said in the same scene as the “dead mom” comment, my brain couldn’t unsee 🙈
How can a sequel to a movie steal from a musical that takes inspiration from the same movie that the sequel is based on? This is an illogical argument.
I didn't expect Day-o to be in the movie. I thought it was just for the trailer.
Yeah same haha
What about when Delia said “you blamed me for your dead mom” and Lydia said “my mom’s not dead” lol.
The sass of including that comment in the film
My thoughts exactly. Since i saw the trailerand the funeral scene i was like: if this ends up at the start at the movie that's straight up carbon copy. Then i noticed the girl scout and dead mom comment and the fact that Astrid's story is IDENTICAL to Musical Lydia's story, only without the age gap. I haven't noticed the shark and piranha thing with Astrid's grandpa and dad so that's one more reason.
I couldn’t not talk about it
As a fan of both movies, the cartoon show and the musical, I must say: Burton is clearly not a fan of the musical and has at best seen snippets of it.
So the screenwriters might have slipped in these few easter eggs for the fans without Burton even knowing, haha! I like that
I dont think they actively took from the musical.
Oooh, so they acknowledge the musical when it suits them basically
Given their yellow suits, they probably were more a slight reference to the Minions.
I wouldn't call it a rip off or stole anything considering without the movie you wouldn't get the stage play to begin with.
I dont like your ideas.
9:11 but imagine if she had said Jane III was a Girl Scout, but she had to leave early for her cardiologist appointment

Does he? That's such a fun reference!
I thought I was the only one to notice that! I do definitely think there were more direct references to the cartoon then the musical, more likely so because Burton was an executive director on the cartoon
I think the Do You Hear that Sound is a nod to the cartoon. I didn’t watch the cartoon much cuz my parents didn’t allow me growing up but now I watch it and it gives off that vibe.
beetlejuice 2 was not a cash grab tim burton did want to make this movie and his movies days are not over
I didn't realize this was a sequel. That's why I was so confused
I have heard Burton doesn’t like the musical and I honestly think he and Keaton made the sequel to reclaim the character in the public’s eyes. That is literally only speculation though, quote me on NOTHING.
Haha we won’t
i think you're looking WAY to hard into this the reason why the shark was chosen is because the actor who played charles deetz in the first beetlejuice is a registed sex offender and the piranha one i just think that was a stylistic choice on tim burtons part for a cool makeup effect and also just to look cool i don't know if he had a hand in the musical or watched it but i don't know
I had the absolute pleasure of getting to see the musical live earlier this year and I absolutely ADORED IT!!!!!!!!!!!
I also thought the message at the end was similar to the show where Lydia wants to spend her days with the people she loves similar to how at the end of the show she says "I'm gonna take a chance on life with the people I love"
I also feel like in a way the musical kind of made Beetlejuice popular and relevant again like sure the movie was still popular before the show started but like I feel like the musical really brought him back to the spotlight of popularity at least that's my opinion about it!!!!
Oooh yes, i didn't catch Lydia's final sentiment being quite similar in both the musical and sequel!
The funeral scene had me laughing in the seat. So surreal so perfect

I want to get a used phone, if my current one ever gets totaled.
I loved that Lydia mentioned that her mum was still alive, I felt like it really helped separate the musical and the sequel in my brain.
Details like this make me wonder if Burton and Keaton actually hate the musical, or if it was just a series of TAKE TAHT WE ARE DOING IT BETTER!s
Either way, love the musical to death and undeath, and enjoyed the hell out of the sequel.
Haha perhaps!
I’ve heard that Burton hates the musical because they didn’t bother trying to reach out and collaborate whilst simultaneously crimping Burton’s style.
There were a few jabs at the musical. Lydia saying her mom isn't dead was certainly one.

It’s just such a genetic phrase ho
Lydia's mom is still alive in the sequel
Yeah I have heard that Tim Burton wasn't the musical's hugest fan, and there may be some love lost between Brightman and Burton/the original cast. I've heard rumors of Winona Ryder being a massive Beetlebabes shipper and the filmmakers playing into that with her in mind, but I can't confirm all that
i might be delusional but i swear i remember them saying “the whole being dead thing” and i was fully pointing at the screen
really?! Omg, I'll have to watch it again haha
what about all the things the musical stole from the original source
Rip off? The musical is based on Burton’s vision.
STILL annoyed that they mentioned Emily Deetz being alive in passing, then doing NOTHING with it, and Jeffrey Jones being PAID to use his likeness despite being killed off (they could have done it without using his image and needing to pay him) after what he did.
Omg they had to pay him for his likeness? Agreed, they could’ve definitely told the story without using his likeness
Oh and Astrid’s dad also gets eaten by piranhas
Don’t know if someone commented this, probably, but Charlie’s death was inspired by Tim Burton’s most feared way of dying; being in a plane crash in the ocean and being eaten by a shark.
Ooooh interesting! Haha I didn’t know that

i mean, i wouldn’t call it a rip-off. it’s an adaptation.
Exactly
It’s literally a fucking sequel.
@@Ryucallie do you mean that the musical is a sequel of the original film? Because that’s not the case! Nor is the movie sequel following the musical. The sequel is a continuation of the story of the first film. Details like Lydia’s mum being dead in the musical, but not in the sequel, show that these stories exist in alternate universes
That’s a large diaphragm condenser mic (at least is looks like one) and you could easily just put it on a stand and it would pick you up fine even if you move around. You only need to hold a dynamic mic like a sm58 that singers often use on stage. The pick up pattern is much smaller in order to reduce feedback from the stage monitors.
love both the musical and sequel ❤
I think this has been one of the most significant movies of the year, as I've seen many people doing the Barbie and dressing up for the movie. This and (possibly) wicked may be the most culturally relevant movies of this year, socially speaking

THANK YOU when I walked out of the theatre after seeing the sequel, I told my friend that the movie just sort of took certain ideas and plot points from the musical
Yeah, but they didn’t try to woobie the Juice, so win.
The Beetlejuice musical is one of my favorite pieces of media
I had way less sympathy for Astrid than for Lydia. Both of them lost a parent and then their single parents get into relationships with crazy people. But Lydia’s father seems to have a downright maliciously neglectful relationship with his daughter and Delia is hopelessly unkind to Lydia and refuses to understand her. Lydia is a more misunderstood mother who is traumatised and taken advantage of by her new partner. Astrid’s antagonistic relationship with her seems pettier
Yes, agreed!
Love the musical more than either movie
I don't know if you just forgot, didn't notice or just ignored it, but in the new movie Lydia directly says that her mom isn't dead, which ruins the main plot point of the musical (I think, tbh I never watched the musical)
A good ending (I liked the movie) could've been a double wedding, so that Jenna Ortega is willingly marrying the boy maybe (having it be willing would be wierd/surprising, and the family tension between them would actually factor into the afterlife plot and not be immediately dropped because they need to help each other.)
This would actually make the ending even more "messy," however in a way that actually feels connected to the story and emotions of most of the movie.
Haha one day I’ll have a better phone and a pop filter 💪🏻
Its kind of hard to "steal " when Tim Buryon is the OG creator lol
I actually disagree on that one! The musical uses the same characters and premise as the original film, but the narrative is very different. And not written by Tim Burton. So for the sequel, a film that is a product of Tim Burton, to be very similar to the plot of the musical, does feel like he got inspired by someone else’s work

They *incorparated* elements from the musical. Not stole
You say potato, I say potato 😉
Very besides the point, but I’m obsessed with the fact that your autocorrect changed Astrid to Adelbert 🤣

What the musical stole from the movie
Oh what a good marketing idea! I would’ve definitely wanted to attend triple beetlejuice day! 😍
