An excellent, muscular performance of a wonderful quartet. As for the 'Fifths' motif after which the quartet is named, I went to the small trouble of counting the number of times it occurs in the first movement - about 95 (if the second repeat is not done), which is 15 or so per minute. Hardly essential information, but amazing what a master composer can do with two notes!

I counted too and found 96.... Did I count one occurrence twice? This is the sound of five minds working together, not counting the guys who made the instruments.

John Williams based his career on fifths and fourths!

      Ian Letham
The use of fragments and motifs and then working them intensively is quite common in Haydn and was a trick Beethoven picked up from him and used too.
This technique happens almost everywhere because in these two composers, you find development of material occurring almost from the first bar/measure; it is a rather different compositional technique from that of Mozart in particular.
Another example of the two-note game can be played with the first movement of the Symphony 70 where the first two notes of the symphony are taken on a long journey in the development section.

Simple - they are cowardly idiots. If they weren't and had thoughtful objections to the performance then they would have written a comment to explain their thumbs down. Anonymity is a great shield for those without character or ideas. Don't let the thumbs bother you.

artlm2002 Well said; negative comments or thumbs down normally disguise a lack of knowledge and/or understanding of a particular composer and the music.

A truly great work from the great Haydn, it sounds a lot like Boccherini in places though: one has to wonder how much he may have borrowed from Luigi in composing this work, though of course with Haydn's own unique genius fully incorporated into the full display of its potential throughout the work.

I'm not comfortable with the idea of Haydn borrowing anything that doesn't belong to him. being inspired by is not the same as borrowing.

I have not listened that far yet, but I'm bummed if it's something really that glaring. This is one of my favorite string quartets, and I've been looking for a really great live version (good performance, good sound, good lighting). I was hoping this was it!
