Greek is not instantly easy as a language however it is a language that unravels the history of Western civilization, you learn Greek that way you begin to have an understanding where you come from, if you are a European, everything you are everything you will be is Greek, so learning the Greek language is learning about yourself.
Please teach greek, good words, conversation, everything. My why is strong because I am greek, but unfortunately did not grow up with my dad or his family who spoke it. I am trying daily to learn so your videos would be deeply appreciated 😊

I did my degree in ancient Greek history but only now 30 years later am learning modern Greek. .i am an artist and my work centres women in cities, esp the women of ancient Greek. I am loving any Greek language content!
Ancient Greek and modern Greek, it is the same language obviously the language spoken today in Greece, Cyprus and the wider diaspora has stages of development that reflects the modern history of the Greek Nation. Everything in modern Greece has its roots to the ancient Greek civilization, that doesn't change, we are very proud of that, as well as the fact that Greek is the world's oldest continually spoken language that has changed very little over the centuries.
Watching from the UK. My 'why' for learning Greek, is my boyfriend is Greek! The first Greek word I learnt was watermelon, because he was telling me a joke and he didn't know the English word for it! The first Greek word I learnt on my very first visit to Greece was 'malaka' haha and this is when he had picked me up from Nafplio bus office and was driving me back to his village, he yelled it at a fellow Greek driver. My future in-laws don't speak any English so I am eager to learn so that I can attempt to converse with them on future visits. It truly is a beautiful language, despite finding it very difficult I am enjoying learning. Love seeing gorgeous Nafplio in your videos. Thank you!

I’m a Brit living in Cyprus and would say I know the basics in Greek. I really appreciate you teaching colloquial expressions of the type you don’t find in textbooks, but that are in everyday use among native speakers. The main problem that I have is that Cypriot Greek is very different from Greek Greek in terms of dialect and pronunciation and there aren’t many resources available to utilize to learn Cypriot Greek.I was amazed when I first went to Athens at just how much more I could speak and understand compared to being in Cyprus! Keep up the good work!

The mainland Greek is what is referred as " standard Greek" it's basically the equivalent of " basic English" it's the easiest version of the language
the islands Greek, like corfu, Crete and Cyprus are closer to ancient ionian Greek with some added foreign vocabulary so everyday expressions can be strange and hard to understand even from Greek speaking people from different places 😉

Hola and Yeah sou from Vancouver, BC, Canada. I grew up in Athens, Greece and immigrated to Canada when I was 19 year young… long… long… long time ago! As you said, one needs a purpose to learn a new language. It’s not easy.. it’s a process that ultimately pays off. I met my esposa (Cristina) at college and she is of Spanish decent. She is also fluent in Spanish, French and some Greek! Another couple we met here in Vancouver are from Venezuela and have become great friends. I’m hoping I will bring them along to Greece one of these days and meet you in person! My parents lived the last 20 years of their life in the village of Ligourio which is 20 minutes away from Nafplio. I love Nafplio! We stayed there several times during our summer vacations. I am Dutch, but watching from New Zealand. I love Greece - the people, the food, the drinks etc. I've been learning Greek dancing for the past 15+ years (love that too) and now I have started to learn modern Greek. The first words I learned in Greek (and still remember) were ένα ψωμί - I was 6 yrs old and on holiday in Greece and would order at the bakery in Greek. I also learned how to count to 10 then (and still remember today). You are an inspiration Daniel as it sometimes feels like I'll never be able to speak a full, proper sentence in Greek!

As a person who speaks several foreign languages and currently studying Greek I cannot but applause to your ideas about learning a foreign language. It's absolutely true. Having a strong "why" is a necessity. And it cannot be "I want to learn Greek because it's cool to speak Greek". It's like "I want money because money is great". No, you never just want money. You want the status, the freedom etc. It's the same with the language. language is a tool to get other things. And if you want those things really badly, you will succeed.

My “why” for learning Greek is particularly important as I’ve been married to Greek for almost 22 years! (And just because you are married to a Greek doesn’t necessarily mean they will have the time, patience or ability to teach you) I have long tried different methods to learn, but not being in Greece to immerse myself in the culture has made it challenging. Also, being Latina (and speaking fluent Spanish) I find it sometimes confusing as there are some words that mean one thing in Greek and something completely different in Spanish. “Mia” is an article in Greek that means “a” or “an”, and in Spanish literally means “mine”…🤔
So for someone hearing these types of similar words/phrases in Greek, it can get a bit fuzzy.
As a native Spanish speaker Daniel, have you found it easier or more challenging? I think you need to learn a language through trial by fire, but again you have to do the work, it’s not necessary an easy thing to accomplish, so kudos to you for learning this magnificent language! I am so jealous of your ability since you sound amazing speaking in Greek!

I have a basic understanding of Greek, started learning about 27 years ago and am now starting to re-learn and develop as we want to move to Greece and I think it is important to learn the language. We just got back from a holiday in Zante and I practised there, they helped me with words I didn't know and I loved it and they really appreciated me trying. I know it isn't easy but I want to be fluent too and I will keep going. I from the UK, originally from London but currently based in Yorkshire. Love your channel....thanks so much for sharing!!
excellent information Daniel! I was born in Athens and Greek is my first language. However, we move to Los Angeles when I was almost 5 and I grew up in the states. I do not have a Greek accent and I almost lost my language. I have been working hard the last few years, watching Greek TV, teaching myself to read an write Greek as I will be retiring there shortly. Hi again, from Theologos, Malesina. I lived in Greece as a teenager for a couple of years, and did not have enough exposure to master the language. But after a year back after a 40 year absence I'm getting better. One thing though, my friend - I think we must imitate the Greek accent also to be understood. Yours sounds great, btw.
Agreed I am fluent in Greek but my accent was from learning Greek at home. Many people comment on how confusing my accent is but if you are understood ,all the more reason to continue

Hello , from Germany . I'm greek but I didn't live in Greece since I was born. I tried many times to learn but it was difficult because of the kids , the family and the work . Now my kids are grown and I visit Athens every year , but I always need official papers or go to official services and I don't know how to speak, I have to translate everything to understand . I learnt the alphabet and some words but I couldn't speak because I don't use the language every day and my father passed away and he also didn't use his mother language for many years . Maybe through your videos we can learn simple conversations and how to deal in official circles and what papers are necessary. How to deal if you have a boy who is required to do military services but lives all his life outside Greece, I mean it's obvious that we can assign a lawyer but general information are needed. Or if you know some good lawyers . I Appreciate your efforts in filming and reading our comments thank you ❤

Speek English, French & Greek. However, the Greek is what we learned over 60 years ago along with the old sayings. Not speaking Greek except when vacationing in Greece, it's pretty rusty. I would have to stay long-term to really pick it up.

It's true that learning a new language is a challenge, even more so when it's about grammar-syntax-orthography of Greek, but, as I said on a previous video of yours, being a hispanohablante helps you a lot to pronounce Greek much easier without butchering it like native English-speakers. Same it's true for us learning Castillian Spanish, even though it's a Romance language. OTOH Marcello, the owner of the Antica Gelateria di Roma you met the other day, has a distinctive "Italian" flaire when speaking Greek.
As for the vulgar words, it's a well established "rule" to learn bad words from the beginning. Keep in mind however that there are also "falsos amigos" too, when i.e. you say "pucho", in Spanish means "cigarette butt" -and something else too 😁-, but in Greek means arxidi (polla in Spanish). 😅

I read some of the comments from people who said, “please speak slower so I can understand the Greek words you’re saying”. I don’t think you speaking slower would be a good idea because it would sound too mechanical and silly. However, one thing you could do is to use subtitles when you speak Greek in the beginning of your video, for example: “Good morning lads from Nafplio. Great job! Spanish gives you a huge advantage because the 5 vowels are exactly the same and there is the identical rhythm and intonation in both languages.
Two pointers for further improvement: 1. you very often substitute/s/ for /z/ (you also do it in English 🙂)-I suppose because of Spanish interference.
2. When talking to the native speaker you pronounced the word έτσι /echi/, the correct pronunciation is /etsi/- the /ch/ sound is not used in Standard Greek, when heard it is regional and low class.
Other than that, Συγχαρητήρια!
For those that beleive spanish are similar to greek they have no clue. The only similarity is in the phonetics / accent. Spanish are very similar to italian / french in terms of grammar. Greek is totally different

6:27 - totally, im a Romanian native, & that doesnt make it much easier... n esp cs ive some things going on w health n such mb that makes it harder... its easy for me to get discouraged😂 but i try to carry on despite feeling discouraged at times... greek is that language i sincerely desire as a healthy 2nd/3rd (after English/Russian (it being my second, tho weak)

while Spanish has no ties to Greek, apart from words that have been adopted by many western languages in the field of medicine and sciences; the Spanish language phonemes are very similar with Greek. The Spanish sounds for theta, the s, p and the trilled r's are common to both languages. It won't help to learn the language, but having your tongue already trained to make those sounds makes learning Greek without a strong accent easier.
It will very much help to better and easier pronounciation. Apart from letter j, g or the diphthong "τζ" in Greek, that Spaniards cant seem to get their tongues around it and always comes around as a ye or ya or "για" and "γιε" in Greek 😁

The Greeks have some idiosyncrasies, which they often use to make jokes. When a woman has her period (she is in a bad mood or in pain) we say: she has her clothes (because they used to use cloths, before sanitary napkins). So when we want to say that we are irritated, we say: leave me alone, I have my clothes today! That's why the gentleman answered the question: - Why are you not well? - Because I got (my clothes)...🤣🙃

Thé hardest thing Anglos have problems with are the verbs you speaking Spanish helped you to understand the concept ( male female they I you) the American living in Kalamata ( TikTok) Some times makes mistakes on the verbs.
Yes, indeed. Conjugation in verbs is a big difference. Another big, big thing is the masculine-feminine and neuter, in the use of nouns. On the other hand, everything you see written down in Greek, it has to be pronounced. There are no silent letters and no different pronounciations of vowels, depending on where they're placed within a word. Once you learn the aphabet and then you learn the pronounciation of the few diphthongs, meaning the "ευ", the "ει", the "ου" or the "οι", "γγ" and "κσ", you're pretty much set το read anything regardless of knowing the meaning of the words you're reading. Another big difference is proper syntax. Where the subject, the opbject and the verb correctly fits in a sentence.
With reference to single letter pronounciation, for example letter "A,a" in english, can either be pronounced as an "a", like in the word "attribute" or as an "ey" like in the word "placed" (where also that "e" is silent), which in overall is making a "pleycd". In Greek you don't have such problems. An "α" or an "ε" not only has to be pronounced but it will always be pronounced as an "α" and an "ε", regardless of where you find it within a word.
Also in Greek, there no phrasal verbs.

Greek is a difficult language to learn and Othografia is even more difficult.
Yes spelling is a pain in the arse, with all those different "η", "ι", "ει" and "οι". Or "ο" and "ω" or "γγ" and "γκ", or "ξ" and κσ", or "ψ" and "πσ".
Conjugation in verbs, correct syntax and genders in nouns, is another can of worms. Especially compared to people with English as their native language. On the other hand certain things are much easier. There are no silent letters and different pronounciations of vowels, depending on where they're placed within a word. Everything you see written down you have to pronounce it. Also no phasal verbs.
An easy way to speak Greek is like child, to have someone to speak to you all day. Then write basic words. Please dont say bad words, real life is not a movie.

Let’s be light on Daniel. His introduction of those phrases spoken in that movie reminded us all the chuckles that we had when we first heard it. One cannot get serious about learning a language without having a light attitude about it.
