  • This runty Panache fig was purchased last year. It produced a couple of figs and this rookie fig grower made a disaster of things by picking too early. With a second chance, it was picked too late and something nibbled a good amount away.
    With patience and great tips from fellow viewers, I pick and taste for the first time this ever so elegant fig.

    A surer indication is whether it is easy to pick and whether the tree leaks latex from the spot from which you picked.

The Tiger fig is an all around great fig! Looks great and tastes amazing. I agree, figs are wonderful plants to collect. My brother is more of the fig collector than me. Thank you. This plant has grown up (15 feet tall and wide) and I am harvesting this year's crop. I will tell you, purple and green is awesome! I don't have a lot of room so two fig varieties is all I can fit. The other is a purple one-- Violet De Bordeaux. They are coming in at the same time now.
      I hope you find your panache fig plant to grow.

    Hi Brian,
    I've been lurking your channel for about a half a year now. First of all, I just wanted to thank you for the wealth of knowledge you have provided for a newbie first year gardener like myself. You do a wonderful job of breaking everything down and give a very clear and thorough explanation of the subject matter. I first stumbled across your channel because I was researching different holy basil types. Thank you for that very informative video. I still have yet to get my hands on the coveted Krishna holy basil, but hopefully I do in the future. I absolutely love basil!
    While watching another video a while back, I realized you live very close to where I work. I actually saw you drive by my workplace lol. I was just wondering if you got your Panache fig from the SGV Nursery? The last time I was there, I noted they had a label for some, but none in stock. My mother loves figs, and I have a friend in Florida that goes nuts for anything with variegation, so I was planning on eventually sending her a cutting when my fig got big enough. I was hoping to find somewhere to get my hands on one for the both of them. Thank you once again, and don't stop making wonderful and informative content! :)
    -Ann

    • @neverenoughdirt
      @neverenoughdirt  7 років тому

      Hi, Ann. Very nice to hear from you. It's absolutely my pleasure. I am glad that the holy basil video was helpful. I too got very curious and quickly found that there was information scattered about. That's my best attempt at gathering all up ;) Thank you for sticking around and the vote of confidence.
      Very cool, if you ever see me out and about, don't hesitate to say hello. :) I did get this Panache fig from the SGV Nursery. That has been my plan as well, to grow this fig big enough to get a cutting for my fig-loving brother. So far, it is not growing as planned, lol. I followed advice about treating it rough to encourage growth (limited watering). I've since gone 180 on that advice and am giving it a good and regular drink.
      After purchasing this fig, I saw some robust stock at the Armstrong Garden Center in Pasadena. You know how it is with plant stock, they rotate in and out. You may want to check there or other Armstrong Garden Centers throughout the year.
      This is getting to be a popular fig so chances are good that you'll come across one real soon. I think your mom will really enjoy this fig. I can relate with your friend in FL ;D That reminds me, I forgot to continue my variegated banana search. Thanks, I'll try to keep at the videos :) :)

    • @anntsuchiya1695
      @anntsuchiya1695 7 років тому

      I wouldn't be surprised if in the past we ran into each other, and had absolutely no clue. :o Your fig looks so healthy in your video though! I bought some cheap cuttings from an online site and they were literally sticks stuck in some dirt when they arrived. They have many more years to go 'til maturity. :/
      Oh my, I frequent Armstrong's as well. Unfortunately, I haven't seen the Panache there the last few times I went.
      My friend from Florida is also a banana fiend. She has done a lot of research on bananas. I believe she currently has about seven different varieties. According to her, the Namwa Musa is one of the better tasting varieties, and there is a variegated version of it. She actually recently bought this exact listing:
      www.ebay.com/itm/182693382672
      It was a bit pricey because of the variegation, but maybe you kind find one cheaper elsewhere. Unfortunately the variegation is only in the leaves unlike the Panache. I eventually really want to get a Blue Java, but they are super pricey and it's common for people to sell a Namwa as a Blue Java, because it takes 2-3 years for the buyers to find out that the fruits aren't blue. :( So be wary of that if you ever consider one of those.

    • @neverenoughdirt
      @neverenoughdirt  6 років тому +1

      Heh, we probably ran into each other at the various garden centers and nurseries without noticing, hehe. The great thing about figs is that they grow pretty quickly and can fruit when the plants reach three feet tall (at least that's what I saw on one of my brother's cuttings).
      Namwa Musa, good to know. Due to limited space, fig and bananas are lower on my list of plants to collect. But for my brother, they are high on his. I am going to pass this along to him.
      Nice score on that variegated banana. I was afraid that they are still triple digit. Maybe it can fit into next year's budget, hehe. Last September, I ordered a Blue Java from Wellsprings Garden. It was probably 10-inches tall and is now three feet. I think I have another year or two to go before we see banana. Hopefully their supplier supplied them with a real Blue Java. But it sounds like if not, Namwa is a good consolation.

    • @anntsuchiya1695
      @anntsuchiya1695 6 років тому

      That's really good to know. Makes purchasing cuttings definitely worth it! :D
      Yup. Space is a huge issue for me. You're lucky you have all that nice space to plant stuff directly into the ground. 80% + of my garden consists of containers. :( I hope he finds the perfect banana for the right price soon!
      Yup, she lucked out on that one. At least we know what to maybe hunt around for now. Oh Wellsprings. I've purchased from them too. The fig twigs I mentioned I purchased for my mom in an earlier comment were from wellsprings. I checked recently and i was really sad to see that they did away with that free plant with every order deal. :( Oh wow very nice! Healthy plant! I didn't know they had a Blue Java on there. I see it now. For that price I wouldn't even be mad if it turned out to be a Namwa.

    • @neverenoughdirt
      @neverenoughdirt  6 років тому +2

      I havent kept an exact tracking but I believe that it takes a couple of months to develop stripes (here in Los Angeles). This year's crop has had their stripes for about a month now. --brian
      1-inch but green, hmmm.. Doesnt bode well. Sometimes nurseries mislabel their plants and it could be the case here. However, it's not over until it's over. Until the fruit is ripe, there may be a shot that the stripes come in. Additional, on my tree, the leaves are ever so slightly variegated. The leaves have patches of a different hue of green.

    • @neverenoughdirt
      @neverenoughdirt  6 років тому +1

      p.s. Are you in a warm climate? The fruit needs warm weather to ripen. If you're in a cool climate, that could be a factor. I dont know for sure because I have not seen how this tree behaves in climate that isnt warm like Los Angeles and Phoenix.
