Seriously, what is this reason with Hollywood trying to drag out the these remakes when the originals were less than 90-100 minutes, especially when they’re not bringing anything new?
Well yea, that. But also these movies are HORRIBLY paced. Like they stretch out scenes and insult the audience's intelligence by showing or explaining things they would already know. And it's EXCRUCIATING.
@@vetarlittorf1807 Presumably the usual way. I think it was more a comment on evil in general. But relating it to the Legendarium, it's about subcreation rather than procreation. Melkor could not make a new species from scratch, only alter and twist what already existed into a deranged form. Even Aulë, who created the dwarves, could not make them living things. They were dolls that could only act to his own desires until Eru adopted them and made them real. There are still questions though, like Ungoliant (and her offspring, including Shelob), whose origin is unknown. Tolkien didn't believe in having all the answers, as there are plenty of things we don't know about the real world either. Most of those can probably be handwaved as being part of the Ainur's song that were marred by the rebellious notes of Melkor, then brought into existence by Eru exactly as they were sung.
^^ this is a really great point nobody ever mentions, they make it sound like the original is super fucked up because she's only doing something for a guy when really it looks like she's been obsessed with humans/living on the surface probably her entire life from how big her collection is
This! She also made the bad decision of trusting Ursula after her fight with her father. When he destroys all her human things. Things she collected loooong before Eric. Her story was about so much more than just a boy. It was about growing up, teenage rebellion, leaving family to explore the world. They just never understood her story in the first place, so how can they remake it.
"isn't there a african fable about a mermaid?" Yes there is. They could have made a story based on the story of the Mami wata but instead of doing something creative and flesh they chose to blackwash Ariel instead.
Funny enough, there is a 2023 film about Mami Wata that actually looks really good. Also, ancient Egyptians had tales of mermaids in the Nile. If I remember correctly, that's actually where the mythical creature was first depicted/spoken of (I could be wrong on that, but I am pretty sure that Egyptian tales at the very least inspired the Greek tales which popularized the mythical creature)
The oryginal Little Mermaid was also all about the surface world, wanting to be there, and seeing Eric was just the final straw when her dad got mad. And it was Ursula who put the fast romance into the deal to have a winning chance, not Ariel, she manipulated her into it. Ariel just wanted to runaway from home where she felt trapped and misunderstod, to follow her dreams. A cute prince was just a bonus.
Yeah pretty much it, by saying it was all about Eric, the people who "improved" the original story with this remake show that they have no idea what was going on in the original and they reduce a somewhat complex situation to just a small aspect.
No it wasn't. Ariel had desire to go to the surface yes; but she was a growing teenager who yearned for adventure and romance. Did you not watch the Part of Your World number where she talks about meeting a guy and dancing with him? She never pursued that desire to leave the ocean until she met Eric. He became her motivation. Her love for him was her true motivation to make sacrifices so that they could be together on the surface. This story was about unconditional love not vapidness.
@@Neonsilver13 And she NEVER wanted to change for him, she was happily making plans to talk to him while still beeing a mermaid, she only took the legs when she decided to leave her home forever seeing that Triton hated not only her new crush but also her hobby, destroying her collection (that was her main source of happiness) and leaving her with nothing she actually liked at home. When Ursula's minions took advantage of her distress.
I also love how Eric‘s arc goes from trying to find a girl with the beautiful voice who saved him, to realizing that sometimes it’s about what’s little a person heart that matters and decides to stop finding the girl and tell Ariel, despite having no voice, how he feels about her.
@@spndusk2362 And yet when she tours the kingdom she shows more interest in her surroundings. She didn't want to move to the surface because she didn't know it was possible, not because she hadn't met Eric yet. Part of Your World makes it very clear that she was more interested in the surface world itself than anything. Eric simply became her primary focus because her feelings for him were all she had left after Triton destroyed her collection. But she still wanted to explore the world above, she just wanted to do it with Eric.
You know, it is quite poetic how the little mermaid animated version brought life to a dying company. While the live action version has the potential to deliver the death blow to Disney, or at the very least to any hope for Disney being able to produce quality content again.
Disney also made a mistake of ticking off one of there biggest market China. It seems China has a problem with not just Black people in movies but Blacks in General.
I was ten when “The Little Mermaid” came out and my parents dragged us to see it. I remember thinking it was really girly as only a ten year old boy can, but then getting really sucked in by the story and in the end, really feeling something about Ariel. When Beauty and the Beast came out, I was totally down for it because TLM won me over. Nothing about this remake has won me over, mostly because it treats the magic of the original like it’s all a mistake. The hook of the story is of a mermaid falling in love with a human, which is something mermaids in lore weren’t supposed to do, and you neuter the drive of the film by trying to replace most of that romantic drive with just wanting to be on land. Romance isn’t some evil desire… it can drive us towards great accomplishments or great tragedy; that’s the hook of the story. Modern Disney doesn’t want female characters to be motivated by their love of a man, which is a shame, because it’s that very drive that makes them relatable! Even at ten, I could understand Ariel’s drive for Eric, and root for that. It’s fundamental. It’s the heart of the story. Why weaken it? It’s a bad choice, Disney.
I doubt it will kill Disney so much as let Disney know, everyone is a bit to clever to fall for their recent gimmicks. With a crap ton of luck, the'll stop doubling down on this insanity and be forced to do something actually entertaining. That or this will cripple them for a while. Eitherway, I think we the audience will win.
What's really cynical about the casting is that Bailey isn't there to be an empowered role model, she's there to be a shield from criticism. Even if the movie has 1,000 problems unrelated to her, the response to a flop or bad press will be to throw her forward and call everyone racist while standing safely behind her as Disney themselves make her the sacrificial object of controversy. In a show of faux-defense of Bailey, they will be the ones actually abusing her.
ginger spells the n word if you move the letters around, disney/etc being low key racist red hair is more rare then a skin color. but they making all gingers into African Americans instead. Sus.
We already have a diverse character from The Little Mermaid, her name is Gabriella. She was Latina, deaf, and used sign language. She had a friend that was an octopus that helped translate what she was saying.
@Erika ERIC Latinas, especially from Latin America, are mixed raced. With decent from Spanish, African, and Indigenous peoples Plus the character Gabrielle _is_ dark skinned
Ariel in the original didn't want to go on the surface because of Eric. She was already obsessed by the surface world and collected anything trinkets she could find, "part of their world" was before meeting Eric and it became "Part of your World". She didn't ran away and made a deal with Ursula for the prince, she did it because she had a horrible fight with her father. Eric was always just an extra bonus.
She literally becomes a human to be with him. Yeah she was fascinated by the surface world, but mostly with the humans and she decides to become one of them in order to be with Eric. It's literally a lovestory.
@@dendanskehelt4296 did you watch the original? Ariel had to pursuit Eric because of Ursula's shady deal to fulfill a desperate wish to be on the surface. I figured if she figured out a way to do so without the sea witch's help, it wouldn't be far fetched to say that Ariel would do so post haste.
@@odindarkll3706 Yeah I watched the original. I grew up with it, and she made the fucking deal because she wanted to be with the dude. That is also why she does so in the original fairytale, which I also know very well since I'm a fucking Dane. She does it all for love. Go Watch the movie. GODDAMMIT!!!
In the Hans Christian Anderson story, where the story came from, she went to the surface because of Eric.( there was no name). She also didn't get him or live happily ever after. He fell in love with another woman because he thought she rescued him. The only way she could break the spell and return to the sea was to take the knife that her sisters sold their hair for and kill Eric. She doesn't want to kill him so she becomes sea foam. No happy love story there
At this point I genuinely believe it. The tech is there. I've seen the AI script generators and the kind of non-sensical story beats and putrid soulless dialogue they spit out is exactly the kind of shit you see and hear in modern Disney and Marvel and everywhere else. Sorry, but I refuse to believe a human being came up with "the sea is always right"

Glad Chris brought up the length. I took my two year old to see Super Mario Bros and he was throughly entertained and sat through the whole thing. No chamce I'm taking him to a movie longer than that. Kids movies should be 1:45 at the longest.
@@stevem4105 Jesus, give a kid a 90 minute movie, the attention span of youngsters these days is frighteningly short. What are Disney expecting from kids, to appreciate the nuances of long form story telling?
From my experience as a father of four, three girls, and one boy. You only have around 75 to 95 minutes of their attention if the movie is good. If a movie is mediocre or bad you have about 35 minutes. For example the 95 or so minutes of the Mario movie run time My son was starting to get squirmy at the end and he thoroughly enjoyed that movie you just only have so long with small children.
Yes. All those trinkets and dodads in Ariel's cave; she clearly amassed within days of meeting Eric. Not over the course of many years before she met him.
The funny thing is, is that she fell in love with Eric because she saved his life, AND his statue fell into her trinket cove. So it allowed her to fall in love with him.
My girlfriend went to watch the movie with her family this Wednesday at the cinema (we live in Italy) She's no film critic, and isn't very critical of the media she consumes in general, but she told me that the movie felt bloated, with new songs that felt like padding, and CGI sequences that felt physically painful to watch. Ironically, she said it shattered her suspension of disbelief that Prince Eric seemed to be the only white guy in what was clearly a late medieval european-esque kingdom. Between the above and what she described as a dedication to a nonsensical photorealism, it sounds like yet another stunning slam-dunk for Disney.
@thibaldus3 Eh, she only went because her sister wanted to see it, and she's big on family. She doesn't care at all for modern Disney, and showed no interest in the trailers whatsoever so it really must have been a gesture of affection for her sister haha
@@theroachden6195 Not only is it a Danish folk tale, but the little Mermaid is specifically described as being very fair skinned and having blue eyes in it. "skin ... as clear and delicate as a rose-leaf, and ... eyes as blue as the deepest sea"
They still got her cash and it will reflect when it makes over a billion as millions of people like your gf go and watch it. If we need these shit movies to go away, stop giving them your money!
The big question isn't about whether the reviews are good or bad, but rather how many people Disney can lure into the theaters to pay for this attempted cash-grab. If this movie makes money, Disney will have learned nothing from this project and they'll continue to "re-imagine" classic movies that don't need to be remade.
@@MrNicoJac I guess that's why Disney posted huge losses, is laying off staff, and 4 million subscribers left D+. Sounds like the opposite of success to me.
The thing is, I like Awkwafina in movies when she's actually funny (which trust me she's not here, Crazy Rich Asians was pretty decent for her comic relief) and most importantly when she's cast against type like she did in The Farewell. The Farewell was a breath of fresh air for her performance, less annoying and real acting talent for her. I wish she could just take her acting skill seriously and challenge herself to play dramatic roles instead of this. I mean yeah I wouldn't mind her as Scuttle at first but rapping? Hell no
@@Erasureeraser I like Awkafina too (she was way better in Shang Chi) and I liked her in Renfield because she's actually written better. I haven't seen her in drama sadly.
Whenever anyone mention’s Jasmine’s new song, I’m always reminded of Ryan George’s Pitch Meeting where he points out the entirety of the movie stops so Jasmine can sing her empowering song TO HERSELF IN HER HEAD!
What's sad is that Greta Gerwig is the co-writer of the screenplay. A talented writer like her, why even worked on the Snow White screenplay. God I'm so dissapointed in her but i still hope that the movie could be atleast decent
You know id actually prefer animated remakes to these live actions atrocities. Tangled looks amazing. Remake Little Mermaid in that style if it really has to be done. All the vibrant colours and water would look great. God forbid we have some life and style back in our kids movies.
I sadly went with my girlfriend to see it. It's worse than you think. Eric sings a painfully cringe worthy song that we both laughed all the way through- he also has a mom for some reason, who keeps him on a chain. He's seemingly only motivated by her wishes. The song by Scuttle is also so ridiculously cringe, I wanted to hide in my seat. There's also a weird eco-warrior theme about how humans are destroying nature. And don't even get me started about the part where Ariel is masterfully controlling a horse drawn carriage at high speeds
Live-Action Jasmine's "empowerment" song is even worse than you remember, because she actually does it entirely in her own head in canon where no one can hear. Effectively making it of the same level of importance as a Dream Sequence.
There's an episode of Futurama where Frys like "why couldn't she be the kind of mermaid that the top half is fish and the bottom half is human". I'm not sure that's any better.
Time for a reminiscence by Nipsy Russell: “I just saw a movie about a mermaid. Don't understand the reason why. It's not enough woman to make love to, and too much fish to fry.”
Someone speculated that the reason Disney keeps forcing new songs into the remakes is because they want to get Oscars for best original music. Too bad it never works.
The problem with these live action versions is that they keep trying to put real world logic in these films. Example in Cinderella (2015), it has Cinderella being smart to the point it was a Belle/Tiana hybrid, yet not savvy enough to find a way to escape from her room? Then you had this subplot of the Duke scheming with other nobles to arrange a marriage between the Prince and a neighboring kingdom that it felt like the writers were watching Game of Thrones the night before handing in the script.
To be fair, the reason why Cinderella didn't try to break out after her Stepmother locked her was because she was absolutely hopeless, she thought nobody really cared about her, even the prince didn't really remember her so there's no point for her to escape. Her Stepmother controlled her everywhere, she's weak because of that. At least they gave her some flaws and vulnerability to make audience care for her unlike Disney did with Mulan who's basically perfect in everything without a single flaw and vulnerability
Many if not most of these writers are linear thinkers who do not understand metaphor. They dismantle it for one reason or another, unwittingly, not having not grasped its purpose.
@@damp2269 Fables is fantastic! Way better than the crap Disney's been pushing out (yes Once Upon A Time I'm talking to you too!) And OUAT actually ripped off Fables!
We all know king Triton is going to be the villain in the movie. He's a patriarch who is holding a girl back, and Ursula has now been changed to be his sister. They will probably do some side plot about Triton being given rulership over Ursula because he's a man to really hammer home the sexism. Ultimately Ursula will be a mother figure who will help Ariel escape her evil father's clutches. Rather than robbing Ariel of her voice, it'll be changed to be a necessary part of the spell and framed as a tragic but necessary sacrifice that Ariel will be willing to make. The finale won't see Ursula defeated. Instead she and Ariel will confront Triton, who will be thoroughly put in his place and forced to abdicate the throne to one of them like a good little neutered boy. Also prince Erik will be madly in love with Ariel and not the other way around, and she will reject his advances as a way to portray her as strong and independent. I haven't watched the movie, but it would shock me if the plot isn't mostly this. And H. C. Andersen is turning in his grave.
@@Keznen "It's thought." Yes, by propagandists wanting to sum up everything from Andersen as him being gay. Even though he dated and desired women apparently much than he did men. "Almighty God [...] Give me a bride! My blood wants love, as my heart does!" He actually fell in love with unattainable women, and many of his stories are interpreted as references, including "The Little Mermaid." Hell, a small pouch containing a long letter from a girl named Riborg Voigt, (his first love) was found on Andersen's chest when he died several decades after he first fell in love with her.
His biggest unrequited love was a woman, and the story was probably based on her. Plus he was a Christian who regretted having same sex attraction and ultimately tried not to have sex outside of marriage. It’s very on brand for the LGBT community to twist history like that.
To be honest the original was trash too, as far as its message goes. It was better art, sure, but the moral was that teenagers know what’s best and parents should just let them do what they want. Which in this case was trying to marry a grown man she never had a conversation with, who literally eats her friends.
@@AbsentMinded619 my nextdoor neighbour loved the original. I was a 6 year old boy and hated it, she was a 7 year old princess and loved it. A shame she never grew out of "being a princess".
I’m getting my little brother caught up on classic Disney films, and we watched Lilo& Stitch yesterday. I remember this movie being huge from when I was a kid, so imagine my surprise when I realized it was 90’ long. The story was great, the characters were great, I loved the emotional beats, the dynamics, and they fit it all in 90’.

Cinderella remake is the best remake that Disney has made thus far for me. It managed to create it's own story and style, added depth to some characters, doesn't rely heavily on nostalgia and most importantly, it doesn't hit the audience with a sledgehammer for THE MESSAGE!!! unlike Mulan remake. Cinderella in the remake worked because she's a flawed but relatable kind character as her entire arc is basically following her mother's advice "have courage and be kind" which she did instead of coming off as a strong arrogance person who's perfect in everything like Mulan or Captain Marvel. The remake is brilliant, the best thus far for me
15:27 To Chris Gore's point: I'm Zimbabwean. My country is 100% landlocked. EVEN WE HAVE STORIES OF MERMAIDS AND RIVER/LAKE/WATER GODS!!! Perfect pitch for a story about a Black empowered mermaid... and the locals won't give you that much grief should you butcher the story anyhow. Also, whatever happened to Disney's animation studio they bought in Nigeria circa Black Panther #1 for the purposes of bringing these "new" stories to the forefront?
If centaurs existed, there would not only be advocate groups and subreddits, but there would definitely be a quota of what percentage of your cast needed to be centaurs in your hollywood movie.
How do you do it with a mermaid? Well, in One Piece, once a mermaid reaches the age of 30, she can switch between legs and a tail at any time. The mermaids in the 4th Pirates of the Caribbean movie could also switch to having legs. However, for a more humorous answer, in the words of Fry on Futurama, "Why couldn't I meet a mermaid with a fish top and a woman bottom?"
Here’s an idea for a Disney movie. They could make a film based on the folklore from the oral traditions of African Americans. They could set it during the southern reconstruction post civil war and call it Song of the South!
My thinking on movie run time is: If you're making a popcorn flick or family movie and can't tell your story in 95-100 minutes then maybe the script is in need of a frssh set of eyes to get rid of the bloat and eliminate scenes that don't matter to the story.
Hey Drinker, I would like to point out that Ariel was fascinated with the world of land BEFORE she ever encountered Eric. She collected artifacts from the land world and dreamed of going up there before she saw Eric. It was while she was watching the interesting land-dwellers on their ship that she first saw Eric. She WAS infatuated in that moment, no doubt. But her fascination with the world of humans came first. Her excitement for going on land DID NOT stem from her love or attraction for a boy.
Drinker, IMDB says about this film's viewer ratings: _"Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculation has been applied."_ The result is an unweighted median rating of 4.5 and an official "weighted" rating of 7.0.
IMDB about TLM: Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculation has been applied. Ah yes. Alright.
The thing about diversity in live action Beauty and the Beast. Once the angry mob formed and went to kill the Beast, there was nary a POC to be found in the crowd. I might have missed it, cause I only saw it once, but I do remember specifically looking for diversity in the mob. Didn't see any.
They purposefully hired an actress who looks like a fish. Well... maybe more like a dolphin, but either way... I know damned well they did that shit on purpose.
Important distinction: this actress is Halle BAILEY. Halle BERRY is an accomplished actress who has been in many films and, I think many would agree, is rather fetching. She is not in this film.
I'm so agreeing with the point of the lenght of movies nowadays, that's always the first thing I'm asking for when going to see one. One and a half hours are perfect for me and every minute after the two hour mark has to be justified somehow. I always have the moment when watching a movie, where I say to myself now I could stop watching and if the movie doesn't even make an attempt to end things at this point it's bad. Take a lesson from animation, they need to be resourceful with time.
@@hassathunter2464 If the movie has unnecessary lenghts in it, it makes a movie that could have been good a bad movie though. And if you can't tell your story under two hours either the way you tell it or your story has a problem or you should think of making it into a series. So I still think running time is an issue, there aren't many movies out there that are longer and don't feel that way. But yes, in addition these movies are long and ain't good...
The Disney remake that i absolutely enjoyed and consider the best one is Cinderella 2015. Even that movie wasn't that long compare to the original. 99 minutes runtime without credits was already enough to tell a simple Cinderella story
When live action jungle book came out I was so surprised. I really liked it and thought to myself "oh man wouldn't it be great if they adapted little mermaid and mulan, my two favourites" oh boi 😬😂
@@vetarlittorf1807 It was solid compared to the original and quite possibly an actual improvement over it, mostly because if I remember correctly the original was horribly rushed through parts of production leading to the weird pacing and occasional narrative disconnects as chunks of the full story never made it into the final cut of the movie.
@Bertoxolus The Puzzled It was also much closer to the book, too. The only thing that could've made it better is if they'd made Kaa a good character like he was in the book, but at least they didn't make Kaa a bumbling fool like the animated film did.
So , in the little mermaid Series they created a character named Gabrielle a deaf mermaid ! She's based off a fan that died during the shows first season. Here is her story : Gabriella first appeared in the episode "Wish Upon a Starfish", where she meets Ariel after seeing Ariel express her desire to dance. Gabriella expresses a desire to be able to sing (despite not knowing what singing is), and convinces Ariel to come with her to seek out the magical Wishing Starfish. The two girls find the Starfish after facing many dangers together, but he is revealed to be a fraud. The girls are saddened, but Ariel reminds Gabriella that she expresses herself beautifully through her sign language. Gabriella would reappear in the episode "Ariel's Treasures". Gabriella returns to visit Ariel and is introduced to Ariel's extensive collection of human objects. However, Ursula, as part of a plot, casts a spell over the collection, causing each item to attack other fish and merpeople. The two girls are able to stop the spell, but only by destroying each object. So much better then the live action and original .Even better based off a girl that passed away. Being they took romance out of the live action this is a perfect concept. Original and a commemoration. The episodes are full of heart too.
I'm with MauLer, I know nothing about pop genres like rap and country and divas but sometimes I hear them and wanna throw up. I'd rather listen to music recorded 30 years before I was born than most of the music from my lifetime.

I'm so tired of the live action remakes. The original cartoons for all the Disney movies were fantastic and none of the live ones were good. Also the trend for replacing gingers is both kinda funny and weird to notice.
@@Erasureeraser Right now as long as they look like the character that will be enough because everything is Autotuned to fk anyway. I've made this point before, maybe even on a Drinker thread, but I think it bears repeating: LENNY HENRY (most recently beloved for Rings of Power) used to do decent stand-up back in the day, and he recounted a story of a night in the 90s when he was sat next to the Nigerian ambassador at the Globe theatre in London for an all-black production of Hamlet. The ambassador turns to him and says, "What the hell are all these black people doing in Denmark?"
'89's Scuttle made squawking sounds he considered singing that made the other characters with auditory sense wince & shudder, like nails being put to a chalkboard. It was done as a joke. Then it ended, not to resume (if memory serves). Why they would want to make an extended, worser version of that, is quite perplexing.
3 hours of oppenheimer would be preferable to 3 seconds of live-action little mermaid. Hell 3 hours of being locked in a room with a lion on meth would be preferable.
The closest we got to an African fable was Song Of The South. The stories of Brere Rabbit were re-workings of the myths of Anansi the trickster spider, preserved by the slaves.
The length of the movie is not so much an issue if the story is interesting and the writing/acting is good. Sure, movies can't go on forever, but I still remember when I first saw The Fellowship of the Ring in theaters and at the end I thought "it's over? I want more!". I would gladly sit through the extended version for all three LOTR movies. Of course it's not the same for small children..

But so far, it’s a big hit
Theres nothing magical about asking for consent. They prove it with this new version of "Kiss the Girl." They apparently destroyed Ariels autonomy. She doesnt get to enjoy the things shes wanted almost all of her life. She doesnt get to choose to kiss Eric or pursue Eric. She becomes a shy little victim like a woman right out of a shelter for abuse victims. That is NOT Ariel
When I was a child, the releases of new Disney animated movies used to be major events in my family’s house. Now, none of us could care less, and shit like this is why.
i think the weird shit is how they want to reuse the property, but the property is also problematic, so we have "under da sea" but we also need Arial killing Urula etc
Centaur/human mating has already been done, in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, and the biggest mystery was not the mating but the human woman giving birth to a kid with hooves.
Animated movies were always around 90 minutes, and I remember learning it was because it was just hard to animate that much more film. And there have literally been studies about human attention span and how it works when sitting and taking in information: two hours is the max for films, training sessions, conferences, etc. I don't get why Hollywood is pushing past those very real psychological studies.
Wasn't it a popular fan theory that Trton and Ursula were siblings and that he banished her when he became king? I'm guessing they're going with something like that. She was older and deserved to be queen of Atlantis but ThE patRiARchy and all that meant Triton became king instead so poor Ursula was screwed out of her birthright and became a misunderatood not-evil sea witch. Something like that at least.
Wow, completely glossed over the implications of the change of Ariel killing Ursula. Triton raged against humans throughout the story, until Eric proved his worth by taking out Ursula, thereby proving not only his worth, but humanity's worth overall. Don't forget that this balances Ariel saving Eric earlier in the movie, and, again, proves his worth (not just his looks) to her. Now, there's no balance, there's no change in the characters, there's no conclusion of the plot, just a "And it all ends up OK, trust us". Fck no, I won't trust you.
In the original TLM, Ariel single handedly saves Prince Eric from drowning, develops courage to stand up to her father and leaves her home to start a new life in a new world. What part of this wasn’t empowering enough for the feminist??
Chris is perfectly right about runtimes I just watched "Your Name" about a month ago. It's the greatest film I've ever seen. It's epic yet intimate and perfect. It's an hour and 46 minutes. If someone can squeeze that masterpiece in there you can do better
That movie, "The Lighthouse" is ATROCIOUS... and it sickened me... I like both actors well enough, and they do a great job "selling" their characters, but MAN, there is some SICK SHIT in that movie... Gaaaaah
Nothing has truly made me appreciate the originals more than the remakes than the current empty hopeless void Disney is now. The bigger they are, the harder they fall. Good grief Jesus Christ this reality is upsetting.
that thumbnail says it all. the lighting. how Disney's water + hair = color screen (unlikely to be underwater) and they actually have the tech for it. Avatar, The way of water.
I see only highly positive reviews on IMDB, but they are all downvoted to oblivion 10 dislikes for every like , but barely any negative reviews. Same on Rotten Tomatoes. Are they blocking bad reviews at the moment and allowing only positive reviews ?
😮 You know I was actually part of the first screening of the little mermaid. - When Ariel screamed "Fus Roh Dah!" at Ursula. It made me cry butterfly tears 😂
I'm not one for Disney remakes, but Jasmine's ballad in the live action Aladdin is one of the few good things about that movie. How it plays into the story definitely sucks (her singing only in her head did not do the movie favors) but it was a good song with a good message.
The question of how sex would work between them probably goes back to the original fairy tale. It does remind me of a comic I saw in Easy Riders magazine decades ago: There are two fish, one wish eye lashes, sexy lips and a ribbon of her head. The caption reads, "I promise not to spawn in your mouth". Still cracks me up.

At this point, I don't give a f$&%. I will never be able to read "THE MESSAGE" using any voice other than Drinker's in my head.
Seriously, what is this reason with Hollywood trying to drag out the these remakes when the originals were less than 90-100 minutes, especially when they’re not bringing anything new?
I think it’s less “the message” and more just “unnecessary bullshit” more than anything

Couldn’t of said it better myself

What's really cynical about the casting is that Bailey isn't there to be an empowered role model, she's there to be a shield from criticism. Even if the movie has 1,000 problems unrelated to her, the response to a flop or bad press will be to throw her forward and call everyone racist while standing safely behind her as Disney themselves make her the sacrificial object of controversy.

My girlfriend went to watch the movie with her family this Wednesday at the cinema (we live in Italy)
She's no film critic, and isn't very critical of the media she consumes in general, but she told me that the movie felt bloated, with new songs that felt like padding, and CGI sequences that felt physically painful to watch.

Time for a reminiscence by Nipsy Russell:
“I just saw a movie about a mermaid.
Don't understand the reason why.
It's not enough woman to make love to,
and too much fish to fry.”
The best part is that a rated M tale with these characters is already done and it's fantastic, it's called fables.
At least they gave her some flaws and vulnerability to make audience care for her unlike Disney did with Mulan who's basically perfect in everything without a single flaw and vulnerability
its not the real world logic being inserted that is the issue
it is the current day american woke politics
Many if not most of these writers are linear thinkers who do not understand metaphor. They dismantle it for one reason or another, unwittingly, not having not grasped its purpose.

IMDB says about this film's viewer ratings: _"Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculation has been applied."_
The result is an unweighted median rating of 4.5 and an official "weighted" rating of 7.0.
Thank you! I'm so sick of 2+ hour movies. Get some good writers and make a tight script that fits in under 2 hours or GTFO.
IMDB about TLM: Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculation has been applied.
Ah yes. Alright.
STILL LOVE that video clip of a kid shouting "THAT'S NOT ARIEL!!!" when she saw the very first images of the proposed 'New Ariel' 🤣🤣🤣👌

We didn't leave Disney, Disney left us...
The thing about diversity in live action Beauty and the Beast. Once the angry mob formed and went to kill the Beast, there was nary a POC to be found in the crowd. I might have missed it, cause I only saw it once, but I do remember specifically looking for diversity in the mob. Didn't see any.
From all these different reviews, there is one massive division, the one between Berry’s eyes
It was a nice touch, Disney hiring an actress whose face resembles a trout's .
@@TheRealJabbergeist yeah that just occurred to me, damn those names are similar

Length is not an issue for good movies.
Problem is... these ain't good movies.
At least this remake had the original songs... the Mulan remake is just garbage😢
did you happen to be holding a monkey paw?
The Jungle Book remake sucked though.
Can not wait for Snow White not Snow White.
Warner Bros did "Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarves" back in 1943.
It will be a alien from a icy planet.
@@redacted_8229 sounds about right...
Did I ever tell you what the definition of insanity is? Insanity is doing the exact same thing again and again and again, expecting things to change.

I'm with MauLer, I know nothing about pop genres like rap and country and divas but sometimes I hear them and wanna throw up. I'd rather listen to music recorded 30 years before I was born than most of the music from my lifetime.
Ikr? It’s so generic and repetitive.
Those aren't even pop genres. They're just their own kinds of crap.
2000s pop was actually good. Pop nowadays is mostly talentless industry plants with cheap gimmicks.
@@Keznen There was definitely a noticeable change after the 90s. I remember it bothering me back then but I didn't write down the specifics unfortunately.
2000s certainly still had good pop music, but I'm hesitant to call it good overall. Eminem was amazing back then though.
When Lil' Mermaid started singing "WAP" with Cardi B, I finally understood the lyrics of that song! Cinematic gold!
I'm so tired of the live action remakes. The original cartoons for all the Disney movies were fantastic and none of the live ones were good.
Also the trend for replacing gingers is both kinda funny and weird to notice.
EXACTLY! The Disney animated classics will always be superior while the remakes will fade to the wind.
@@chasehedges6775 Good Lord i hope they do fade away.
Alexandra Daddario is my pick for the next Little Mermaid remake and i think a lot of people will agree.
Nah, beautiful woman but she’s way too old for the part.
Alexandra Daddario with only a pearl bra covering her boobs? Count me in.
I mean yeah she's white but can she sing? That's the question
@Master Dav Allison Young.
@@Erasureeraser Right now as long as they look like the character that will be enough because everything is Autotuned to fk anyway. IF they can hold a tune that's great but if not they can easily get someone with a voice who can sing the songs and she can mime the bloody words since that's how a lot of the modern films are done anyway.
I've made this point before, maybe even on a Drinker thread, but I think it bears repeating:
LENNY HENRY (most recently beloved for Rings of Power) used to do decent stand-up back in the day, and he recounted a story of a night in the 90s when he was sat next to the Nigerian ambassador at the Globe theatre in London for an all-black production of Hamlet.
The ambassador turns to him and says, "What the hell are all these black people doing in Denmark?"
For some reason it’s not cultural appropriation when you’re doing it to white people …
'89's Scuttle made squawking sounds he considered singing that made the other characters with auditory sense wince & shudder, like nails being put to a chalkboard.
When Eric said that "Ariel shivers mi timber!" I knew it was Hollywood magic.
The only thing wrong with this lineup is not enough sunglasses. Gotta have one stream where everyone wears aviators with a drink at hand. 😎🥃
$48,000,000 day one box office totals which is the 51st best opening day total ever (not adjusted for inflation). It's projected four-day Memorial Day weekend total is in the range of $150,000,000. The true test will be the coming weeks to see if it sustains any kind of popularity going forwards. Should do fairly well in its first full week as school year for most of the U.S. ended last week. But so far, it’s a big hit
Theres nothing magical about asking for consent. They prove it with this new version of "Kiss the Girl."
They apparently destroyed Ariels autonomy.
"If Centaur were real, they'd have rights". Oh, well bloody done; you've just opened another flood gate for the head jobs! 😂
In the original; a dinglehopper was a tool/fork.
In the remake. Ariel is the dinglehopper/fork in Disney…
It’s done.
i think the weird shit is how they want to reuse the property, but the property is also problematic, so we have "under da sea" but we also need Arial killing Urula etc
Centaur/human mating has already been done, in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, and the biggest mystery was not the mating but the human woman giving birth to a kid with hooves.
I reckon the best remake as such was Drew Barrymore's 'Ever After: A Cinderella Story'.
Plus these movies are primarily aimed at _children_ . Children don't necessarily have the attention span for 2+ hour epics
Little mermaid: kiss the girl. Great song. Crab sang it. Amazing. Sounded Jamaican he did, the crab.
"Balance" is too problematic for the narcissist protagonists of the modern day.
To paraphrase Queen: They want it _all_ , and they want it _now_
In the original TLM, Ariel single handedly saves Prince Eric from drowning, develops courage to stand up to her father and leaves her home to start a new life in a new world. What part of this wasn’t empowering enough for the feminist??
A man was involved in a positive way.
Chris is perfectly right about runtimes
I just watched "Your Name" about a month ago.
Good grief Jesus Christ this reality is upsetting.
that thumbnail says it all. the lighting. how Disney's water + hair = color screen (unlikely to be underwater)
and they actually have the tech for it.
“She’s a chameleon!
Well that’s explains the eyes anyways.. “

😮 You know I was actually part of the first screening of the little mermaid.
- When Ariel screamed "Fus Roh Dah!" at Ursula. It made me cry butterfly tears 😂
Dragonmermaid lol
So she was raised in the Waterim ghettos then 😂
I'm not one for Disney remakes, but Jasmine's ballad in the live action Aladdin is one of the few good things about that movie. How it plays into the story definitely sucks (her singing only in her head did not do the movie favors) but it was a good song with a good message.
Disney are buying audience reviews on rotten tomatoes, using AI to give it 5 star reviews
The question of how sex would work between them probably goes back to the original fairy tale. It does remind me of a comic I saw in Easy Riders magazine decades ago:
There are two fish, one wish eye lashes, sexy lips and a ribbon of her head. The caption reads, "I promise not to spawn in your mouth". Still cracks me up.
The stuff of nightmares.
Chris is absolutely right about runtimes. I started Avatar 2, and man, I abandoned ship halfway through because it was already too darn long and I didn't care about anything that was happening. Well, maybe that space whale, I felt bad for the space whale. There is no reason the new Mermaid has to be over 2 hours and padded out by things like Scuttle's new rap
I watched the original Little Mermaid. It was just what you expected from Disney. This is not what i think of or recall being made by Disney when i was a teenager.
At this point, I don't give a f$&%. It's rinse and repeat; make a film pushing "THE MESSAGE," watch it fail, watch the cast, director and Twitter weirdos call everyone who criticizes it a -ist, -phobe, incel, etc. and repeat with the next movie to be ruined.
I'm done with everything. I just simply don't watch things that don't entice me or are not for me. Simple.
I live simply and it leads me to more being more at peace.
