Ten years ago! Wow. I can remember choking on my drink in awe when T Roy dropped 777-9311 at 4:17 - I miss my hometown of Brisbane, they’ve really cultivated a reinvigorated sub culture of Jams. Big respect to Michael Casey aka 21hundred, the Godfather of Brisbane’s Jam scene.
tony hit the drums more times in one minute then most rockers do in a full hour. it was great to see him sit in on someone else's small kit and play it like it was his. i wonder if he tuned it up first ? it sounded great.
This is one of the best venues I seen young TONY play. What makes it special to me its a local place and Royster feels the Funk vibe of the crowd and his playing shows it.
I really wish everyone would stop comparing everyone today. They all bring something different and unique to the table. Just enjoy them for who they are. Regardless of whose better at what, tony and weckl are both unreal drummers who have made their mark on the instrument with two awesome, very different approaches. Yet we'll always love hearing both of em.
I don't think I've ever been as mad at anyone as I was at the person standing up at 6:05....LOL! Instant blood pressure spike! on a lighter note, God, I love the sound of hats......
completely agree. I dont think there is a single musician who enjoys being "stuck". most times I catch myself dividing my playing techniques between solo jams and group jams. Tony manages to combine both quite well when playing with a group.
@ThePhanin every wednesday night in Brisbane. @ Alloneword Bar. 188 Brunswick st. Fortitude Valley. we've jammed with a lot big name cats down there. but this night was very special!
Tony is one of the biggest pocket player out there..and this is a free jam man...nothing more nothing less..it's just a free style session..on beat or off beat who gives a freaking shhh...I think tony just wanna have fun...and music is fun...you don't have to always discuss or analyze music...open your soul brothers..and create your time..on jam session we can go anywhere no boundaries..Just music with no click or time..be the artist and create your own time
Tony is like, ok, let me just play you some groovy stuff like bam pa dam thss pa dam ... and then let me just go into my berserk mode!!! And the crowd is like, whaaaaaaat???
@iplaykazoo1300 its simple in theory. Hes playing doubles between his right hand and the kick. Gives a great illusion of having a double kick. The speed and clarity he's playing it at is unreal.
Do you listen to fusion music? We all know it's not about the chops but having a good variety of chops helps. In Tony's instance which is really what we were talking about here, He has played for alot of musicans in a number of different genres so I think he knows what works in his style of drumming. With that aside this vid was about him showing is musical talent to those who may not know of him. Hence the term 'Trading Chops.'
I don't know if anyone noticed but Tony busted a badass Tupac beat, one of my favorites, "Whatz Yo Phone #" around 4:17. Check it out. OH and that was a badass jam sess too.
I always thought during this performance Tony was behind the 4 count...and the band picked it up. That's a good band to not get lost when drummers switch count. because was behind the 4 and on top of it at times coming out of his solos...
tamadrummer5 I can tell you must be a rock drummer, with this stye of music he's allowed to do be free as long as that groove is still there. He is also trading solos with the bass player therefore he doesn't have to hold back, he is having a conversation now.

To all the hatters saying Royster is only good on huge DW kits, well here ya go. Thats bassist was a beast too
Bruh!!! No I didn't know that!! But now I do!!! thanks guy
All i can say is one of the best , it's too subjective to say which one is "the best" , cuz they both got their advantage
What'd you do win a "Have Tony Play in your band for a night " contest? That's what iy looked like!!
SICKNESS!!!!!
damn, freak of nature !

No one on this planet can outchop Tony Royster. If you know someone else then by all means prove me wrong.

Bass player is from Brisbane. He is on Gospel Chops but plays bass for Planetshakers. :)

tamadrummer5 I can tell you must be a rock drummer, with this stye of music he's allowed to do be free as long as that groove is still there. He is also trading solos with the bass player therefore he doesn't have to hold back, he is having a conversation now.
