What you called a 'second lip' is called a drop center. The reason you destroyed the hold down star is you had it upside down. No need to torque the center pipe more than 1/4 turn past snug ... The pin through the rim wheel stud hole will keep the rim secure from turning as you mount/unmount the tire to/ from the rim. Mount and unmount your tires using your mounting bar in a counterclockwise. direction

I took a old gear out of a scrap transmission and ise it to hold the rim a lot better
