This video has been viewed 45 million times, approximately. When UA-cam came out in 2005, at least 64 people posted this video on their UA-cam channels. Some of those posted videos received up to 5 million views.
As a result of this video, in 2005, I gave a video game music solo recital at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas. I gave 23 encores after my performance. A few months later I gave a solo recital at the Penny Arcade Expo. Also, on July 6, 2005, I performed at the Hollywood Bowl for 11,000 people. To this day I have performed video game music in 17 countries. I continue to perform video game music both offline and online.
Fun trivia: In 2009 I was invited to appear on a funny Japanese television show as a result of the popularity of this video. Unfortunately I had to decline the offer due to having a full schedule and school responsibilities.
Biography
Video Game Pianist (VGP) aka Martin Leung is one of the first musicians to play video game music on the internet. In 2004, a video of the formerly called The Blindfolded Pianist playing Super Mario pieces with the Super Mario theme played blindfolded premiered on eBaum’s World and gprime.net. The video soon became viral, and about one year after the premiere of the video, VGP performed at PAX 2005 at the Meydenbauer Center, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema as part of the Celebrity Guests Signature Series with 21 encores after VGP’s concert, and the BradyGames booth at E3. In 2006 VGP performed at PAX 2006, the BradyGames booth at E3, an iam8bit party at Gallery 1988, Harucon II, The Union Club of Cleveland, was featured in MTV’s “The G-Hole,” and appeared in an article on the front page of the Cleveland Plain Dealer Arts section. The article is titled, “Pianist Makes a Name as Video Game Virtuoso.” In 2007 VGP performed at the 4players.de booth at the Games Convention (Germany), Solon Center for the Arts, and Case Western Reserve University.
More recently, VGP performed at PAX West 2018, PAX West 2016, the Jonathan Club, San Francisco Comic Con, Indianapolis Comic Con, and at Tampa Bay Comic Con. When I first saw this in 2007 I immediately wanted to learn it. I remember printing off your sheet music for all of these Mario songs and practicing it everyday. I can still play all of those songs by memory to this day 😂. You are a LEGEND!

I think i even eventually found sheet music and tried my best to play this medley haha. I'd been playing piano for 4ish years and I wasn't great, but boy this was fun~! I'll add to the discussion. I havenot seen this vid in, roughly, 14yrs and therefore, until thks very moment, I had no clue you that you made another Mario Medley. I am eager to watch iy once i rewatch this orfinal release. I love how you're clearly goofing off bc it's clearly so naturally easy for you to play at this level as if your fingers are magically engaged on autopilot.. You're playing at a ridiculously awe inspiring level and showing that it's so effortless and I believe I totally identify with how it actually feels when you're performing. I'm an Aspy and knowing an Aspy can not help a non-aspy undsrstand how it feels to be one. In my case, I figured it out in an interesting way nshan paying attention and sith eaxh positive result raised the bar all the while knowing what I would be unlocking knowing it must be nurtured and harnessed the moment I became Wars to fhe fact thks gift was embedded within my DNA. i reverse-troubleshot all of my physical and mental ailments over a 3 yr period. beginning age 37. The final liece of the puzzle in olace was that moment I necsme aware I may be an Asly and understanding how to handle the oricess from the bsry beginning. August 2021 (3 years in) straight from the unconscious mind I just knew it and I automatically stated ,out loud, that i believd this completes the reverse troubleshooting phase of my life -leaving all of that background task thinking I'm unaware of until it breaks into the conscious logical awareness portion of the brain. like freeing up memory foe bsckgdound tasks , if you will. I recogmized that more thoughts and chain links were beginnimg to surface towards that moment shen i was finished due to so muxh memory freed uo aolroachijg that point. and sven said sell who knows what aill stem from thispoint . in software terminology without going into major details. The moment i walked info another room i immediately marured into version 2.0 and tbh 3 additional full tenths to 2.4 in about 90min which, in real-world terminology amoumts to so much more. the shear pipelines freed,uo nh that point workig on sho knkws,whst until thinhs surface broadimg everything from then on and all of the time lsst and maturity in basic terminology is like a tred that never stoos growing branching out interfsining vines and all ad always in full bloom to that moment yet surpassed beyond that by the moment to the lont that eventually I habe to believe there is ni thershold or limitation. nkr di i even know what the unconscious mind,is,xurrently wkrking on and hkwxmany tasks at once. im one full year in after that point just beginning year 5 now since that eureka moment. The growth i belived to be linear from ths start clearly it is exponential . I nevsr even thought of explaining it using that tree analogy until this comment. I have recognized this axditiinal layered tjojght process since march of this year texting adds an additional dimension to the entire process and it's major necsusw everything branches out sifh no sign of stopping. Im stating nit sinlly soecificcbfamxhes that continue to grow and nithign mire. im stating new branches vines budding leaves on all of the others over and over. It comes out, most noticeably at its best when I use analogies to help relate specific talking points to others in this manner. that has happened again right here during this commentary . I can go on and on however I feel this to be a fine place to begin to wrap up this topic. Amy Asoy who reads this and has soecific traits in the umbrella of the spectrum, surely, can relate. Still, haven't rewatched yet. I commented first. Makes me wonder if gou are one also if you even know it or or not. You may not be one but from an Aspy loint od view (my own), if you do pay attention to your comments aell then I woukd love to receive an honest response regarding my comments on how accurately I identified how this moment felt for you and also how this talent feels in general. For vindication bur tbh it isn't necessary for my own vindication it's, honestly, supportive for non Aspys in my life who, understandably are incapable of wrapping their heads around the what it's like. I eventually came to terms with the fact that it's not possible to help them understand even a true sliver of the Aspy mind. This includes people who witness it as thjngs unfold. For myself, this was the toughest part ro eventually come to terms with. To reiterate, I'm not stating that you ARE an Aspy (or know , it or not) I'm confident that I am spot-on in regards to how it feels for you in this moment, specifically, and other ones, alike. I believe that I'm 100 percent correct and an honest reponse would mean the world to me in order to support this logic to a few people in my life.

So much nostalgia. I remember being in middle school 9 years ago seeing this and downloading the sheet music he made and learning these songs.. Oh how I long for those days :') it's the things like this in my younger years that really bring me back... Crazy to think it's almost been a decade.
This exact video is what inspired me and what had me decide to learn the piano when I was a kid, and I've come so far in that I have about ~16 years of piano playing under my belt, being able to play close to a near professional level (but not hahah). Just wanted to let you know that you were/are an inspiration, and I'm sure many others were inspired as well. I'm here to say thank you :) and there is just something about watching this video again. I remember seeing this way back in the days when I was still a kid. Was always my favorite Piano cover of Mario, or of anything really. Such beautiful playing. Excellent job with this and I'm glad to see another diehard Mario fan :P. The blind folded part was just excellent. Completely unnecessary but it was excellent and shows your mastery and knowledge of the piano.
