Climbing Over 11,000m In One Epic Ride | GCN Goes Trenching

- Опубліковано 4 лип 2020
- Step aside Everesting, we've got a new cycling challenge. Instead of climbing 8500m James took on the task of descending the depth of the Mariana Trench, the deepest known point on earth at 11034 meter below sea level. But in order to do it he'll need to CLIMB the same hill almost the exact same amount of meters as the rules are similar to everesting, And all for a good cause: World Bicycle Relief

I think Hank is the only GCN presenter finding retirement harder than when a pro 😂 absolute machine 💪
haha - yeah... get back to the pro lifestyle for a rest!
That would be Chris Opie, he found it so hard that he went back to racing ;)
Nice honorable mention on the GCN show today 👍👍
@@brianmessemer2973 👌
Kinda like Phil Gaimon...
Hank is an absolute machine - the champion of cycling challenges. The 10,000 calorie ride, 1903 Tour de France stage, 24 hrs outdoors, 24 hrs indoors... the list goes on!
Add to that that he's not very lightweight like some other presenters...
Absolutely incredible. It doesn’t matter how amateur or how pro you are, that would be one of if not the hardest thing to do on a bike. Wow!
True that!
James Lowsley-Williams and you made it look easy (ish)
I got exhausted just watching lmao
Hank continues to impress with his mental strength.
Galen Kehler He is super impressive in this regard.
And not only with that but also with endurance.
@@lenvio Yeah I love the Ultra Endurance rides he does with the Mark Beaumont. That first ever Tour de France stage recreation they did was brutal. So much hill climbs on those 1903 single speed bikes.
That is so true!
This is epic. It looked hard, but I don't think a 19 minute video comes close to capturing how difficult that 14 hours must have been. Great effort for a great cause, well done James!
No BUT you might want to check out some of my angles of him haha
I think it does. I have a hill out my back door with similar numbers, and even though I like climbing, I avoid this one except for a couple times a year when I feel extraordinary.
Just imagine though if the Ocean ever dries up like that National Geographic documentary, he can climb out of the actual Mariana Trench.
More impressed by the bunny hop over the cattle grid. Well done that man.
Have a look at @bulletbale on insta and you can see the cattle grid jump from a better angle
@@harrysbikes4959 haha! Yes, nice one harry!
KOM Hunt TV got to plug the KOM hunt squad!😂
GCN advice to audience on epic rides: Plan, plan, plan....
GCN management to James: Yeah, sort your gearing on the day mate, course you can do it on a 34-28, you used to race on 39-25 didn't you?
Paul Richards amateur planning and schoolboy error 😂
Was just thinking that. Who picks a hill with 25% bits knowing you've gotta climb it 36x and doesn't think about gearing?
@@firsthippy Lets not let a good story get in the way of a good story.
Hank, you have attained legendary status to all that have done ( and not done ) Porlock. You deserve and should have a plaque on the hill stating your record breaking achievement. 👍🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵🦵 Epic
Yes, I'll get a plaque sorted for the climb somewhere, needs to be done haha
@@KOMHuntTV Yoh!! Do it!
13:30 that bunny hop was so graceful
Gotta admit I was unsure about Hank when he first joined the team. I am a 100% convert and now he’s a favorite. He won me, and I suspect a lot of people, by his grit, fortitude and positive attitude which is so genuine and unaffected. He’s a crazy-man in all the right ways that true cycling addicts love. Super effort in this one Hank! 👍🏻💥. And fantastic production quality on this one too. Cheers 🥂
James Lowsley-Williams Well done man. Great ride and thanks for the content. Really are the best presenter now. I also agree, you have changed this channel.
Why is it that James' content always has better production value than anyone in GCN during this pandemic ?
Probably because he does one big high quality video every week/two weeks while the others are pumping out as much as possible at a time a lot of new cyclists are looking for content and info
Pinoy Aesthetics : Here is your first clue.....He has a double barrel name
@@JMcLeodKC711 Does that mean double barrel challenges? Ain't no yen and yang in those names, more like over the top every time. Love though.
because he is filthy rich
j en this one is probably true haha and has family friends to help
So cool to see the local cycling community coming out to support the presenters during these challenges. Great job!
yeah, there was quite a crowd and he was a legend always smiling at the darkest times!
I just "did" the Porlock Hill ascent on google maps street view, and my fingers are exhausted! Well done James.
You know its serious when you have your own ambulance! As someone who struggles to be a good climber this is incomprehensible to me. Well done James!
Thanks Simon!
When your feet ache the day after this, it’s called trench foot 😹😹😹
Nice!
Hank, love the energy and enthusiasm, and willingness to try anything. You're a beast. With GCN's popularity and global reach, you may never need to buy a beer again.
Brave man to bunny hop a cattle grid with all that climbing in his body. 13:30
Yeah, he did that a fair few times too!
Looks like he’s going super fast too. I ride MTB and I don’t think I could do that on his bike. Super skilled
Ollie: Did I mention my everesting and my hour record? Hank: pffft, hold my beer, mate. Hank is a freakin' legend!
Hank is a beast
Incredible achievement and a great cause. Inspired me to donate 10 bicycles for World Bicycle Relief yesterday. Ride on everyone :)
Thanks Lars! You're the real legend here
WOW NICE ONE!!
*_"When one Man knows where he's going, ALL MEN step aside."_*
Keep it up @GCN @Hank.
I'm convinced GCN are trying to kill Hank. Perhaps he shouldn't have written them into his will??
Maybe they'll be kind to him and his next challenge will be to ride 20km on a flat road, in nice weather, with sandwiches and cake half way.
Maybe, but on an unicycle
@@remisimard7760 While juggling three mandarins.
@@remisimard7760 Gaaah, there's always a catch!
James Lowsley-Williams You’re mad, James. But in the good way. Keep making these awesome videos.
You're a legend mate. I could write a poem and it still wouldn't do you justice. Pure awesomeness. When I grow up, I want to be like you... though... I'm 42 already so... ;)
What an absolute machine. Well done, Hank. The folks in that house with the palm trees must have thought there was a glitch in the matrix watching him ride by all day.
😂😂😂
Porlock Hill - ah memories from the early 70's of an Austin 1100 packed with luggage, mum, dad and little brother as we go off to Devon or Cornwall on holiday from Coventry. Traffic jams on the approach to it and overheated vehicles at the top. There'd allways be one foolhardy/stupid caravaner in the run off area too with steam/smoke coming out from the bonnet... Hank you must have been nuts to select this climb! Fairplay for completing it!
Haha great memories, not quite the 70's but in the 80's I grew up in the houses before the first steep corner and this is a VERY accurate summary of our Summer view hehe
@@KOMHuntTV I forgot to add, this was the first place where we kids could legit scream "I CAN SEE THE SEA, ARE WE NEARLY THERE YET DAD?"
Frazer Goodwin 😂😂👍 that’s what cycling pals that visit say now on the bike at Porlock 😂😂
Hank your da man. “Believe in yourself & never ever give up”. Great words mate. Well done. 👍
"Never underestimate how mentally... " Hank your plain MENTAL great work CONGRATULATIONS . Someone get this man a STRAIGHT JACKET.
Excellent, well done. Could see that you really had to dig deep Hank. Brilliant to see the club riders with you too helping to bring you up the hill (some young blood too which is fantastic!)
Yeah, Joe and Louie are strong little riders... already getting som KOMs off the adults!
Wow Hank - just wow! I love the mental determination! Hey folks - let's pop over to World Bicycle Relief and give in honor of this feat. They have a generous donor who will match the first 20K GBP with another 20K GBP if they reach the target.
James, you’re my favourite GCN host. I absolutely love seeing you take on these brutal challenges.
Great that each GCN presenter puts themselves on the line like this - you’re all fine setters of example. Many thanks
Congratulations James! Very impressive, especially the bunny hop over the cattle grate!! You are a beast!
Think he did that most reps haha
Did he say “5 reps, 5 minutes off”? The man is a monster!
He does make it look a bit easy which is a little crazy
Ive said it before and I'll say it again, this man is a Legend and a credit to GCN......
Chapeau fella. Sitting in my back garden with a glass of wine and I’m physically applauding you. I’ve just had to explain to my non cycling neighbour what an everesting and trenching are. Bloody well done
haha and what was their reaction?
11:30 Bicycle Repairman to the rescue!
And kudos to the riders that rode along and gave moral support, as well as the entire team!
Wasn't James's car parked at the top of the hill?
Oh well, looks like another ride up.
Awesome. Off to donate! WBR is such a good cause.
Kudos Hank. On 22nd Aug I’m ridding Stock Hill for 24hrs. Hoping to do 200 reps 10,000m. You have inspired me to go for 11034m. All for a local charity. You are a legend.
Best of luck, paul!
22nd of august is the fay before my bday
Two summers ago i rode the 160km version of the gran fondo in Penticton BC, Canada. After five hours i couldnt hold my head up any more. The views didnt matter at that point. My hat is off to you. Now i think i will find a threshold challenge for myself. Something worthy of the effort and that i will always remember. Thanks for the inspiration!
best of luck with the Threshold challenge :-)
feeling inspired! it would have been great to have seen one complete climb and decent even if the video was sped up. i am saying this because the video did not encapsulate the difficulties that Hank overcame adequately. great effort, once again, inspirational!
I'm local and will go and get a power overlay video soon, will wait for the traffic to ease off now though
One pedal stroke at a time not “one step at a time” 🙄😂 only kidding, that man is an absolutely machine! 💪🏻👍🏻
Hank is the man on GCN. Loved his RedHook and Rad videos. Only presenter who takes on the hardest challenges.
Turning up at a long day's climb with a 28 on the back = fairly major oversight! Even if you are as fit as the young bloke, a 32 does at least give some respite. Chapeau James, major effort, well done!
One question. Who gave him a lift back to the top to retrieve his car that I assume he left at the top?
Good run Hank! You've earned your rest day.
The ambulance probably. 😂
Yes, he got a lift! haha I used to live at the houses on the left going up, I still live locally but I've probably ridden the hill 3 times in my lift and down once or twice. 37 times is shocking!
That would be me. The least I could do to help after that hellish day on the bike.
@@AspectMedia I bet he didn't even want to look at that road again haha!
That is one insane challenge!!! Hank is one beast of a rider, well done 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. Slightly surprised none of your GCN colleagues didn’t pop along for an ascent or two.
That was gobsmackingly, mindrockingly jawdroppingly AWESOME!!! Hank you're a star!
Absolutely incredible, James! Very inspiring to see you push through. Donation sent off to World Bicycle Relief! Huge respect for you and Oliver - you two are my GCN climbing heroes (you too, Emma, we haven't forgotten about you)!
Hank, Thank you for sharing your suffering with us! What an amazing challenge. I enjoy your never give up attitude and your ability to inspire us cyclist that we can do more!! I just made an donation to the World Bicycle Relief in your honor after watching your epic challenge. Fast recovery :)
Nice one, Chris!
You are an absolute legend, Hank 💪🏻👍🏻❤️
RESPECT.
That brain strength, discipline and commitment. RESPECT.
Congratulations, James!!!! What a brilliant achievement and for such a worthy cause. Thank you for being so inspiring and generous… watching from Seattle, Washington.
Well done James! I bet there were some utterings of "What a load of Porlocks!" hitting The Wall. 😄 I hope you had a few hard-earned ice cold pints after that!
Action man nails it again. OMG I can’t imagine how brutal that was and to be fair, you looked totally trashed before you had even set off from your home. Well done lad and hats off to those who supported you. 👍🏻👍🏻
He was a true legend on that hill. I had a nice bit of banter with him in my vids :-)
Huge thank you for posting this. Hank that was incredible. Loved that the locals joined you for motivation and moral. Community effort for a really meaningful cause.
On behalf of all at World Bicycle Relief, thanks so much to all for the donations coming in. Don’t forget that all donations are matched up to £20k (GBP). Thanks also to GCN for incredible support and of course to Hank for digging deep to trench deep! Our bicycles are provided to people in remote and rural areas of the world who have only ever walked, helping them to prosper and thrive. Thank you all for believing in the #powerofbicycles!
Cool video. So epic. Respect to Your work GCN
Hank has quickly become one of my favorite presenters...what a beast...no excuses!!!! "Don't Quit Before you Try" -(a twist on Clarence Munn)
Amazing, Hank! You push your body to the limit. You are a credit to GCN! Inspiring to people of all walks of life and sporting disciplines, so much to be learnt from this video.
I just wanna say I'm really impressed...
...by the lowlight capabilities of that drone. I mean look at that last shot compared to the regular cams, wow
HAHAHA! yes the drone showed it's true colours there! (it wasn't that dark tbh)
Even the car was struggling up this hill last summer.
Big respect hank.
Takes me a five hour ride to cover a 10th of this elevation, struggling to wrap my head around the effort put in from Hank. Well done!! Hope everyone watching donates whatever they can.
Hank, you are all heart and spirit and I am so thankful to you for sharing your pain and triumph with us all. You prove that all that is needed to succeed is to say yes, be present and have faith. This is exactly what we all need right now........
Listen to David Goggins audiobook on your cycling. He will really push forward the mental toughness you spoke of. Awesome work!
Just waiting for an "Evertrenching" maniac to complete the combined ride of higest peak to deepest depths. A 19882 meter climb ride.
In California you can do 20k to -200 ft. in one ride..
@@renegadetenor But we are speaking about meters, not feet.
You mean 7 km’s above sea level?
Why stop there? There are nutters who do double everests, a very-select few who have done triples, and that one mad bastard who did 30,000 metres of elevation gain. Looking at you Andrew !
Olympus monsing anyone?
So much power and motivation coming from Hank its insane!!
Think about all the challenges he finished while still being so positive even in agonizing pain..
A true hero this guy, kudos to you hank!
Absolutely amazing! So inspring and you should be proud of the effort and awareness you have brought! Well Done Hank.
Everesting, Trenchcing, what next Olympus Monsing?
At the end we reach Beteigeuzing. Climb the diameter of the star Beteigeuze!
I don't get it. Mount Olympus is only 3,000m?🤔
On mars. Highest montain of the solar system. 21,9k
Well we know what the energy bars will be don't we?
Mooning.. wait no
Wow! Mad props for doing this! I wouldn't even go up once.
I live locally and grew up on those houses on the left. I've only ridden it 3 times in my life haha
No chance i could go up that climb!!!
Phenomenal achievement, Hank! All for an amazing cause. Legend. 👍🏻🤛🏻🙌🏻
Amazing effort Hank! Great cause.
Incredible! As if climbing 11,000m wasn’t hard enough you had to do it on *that* climb with *that* headwind. 😮
Yeah.... when the gradient eased off the 30mph *headwind* hit him. hardcore!
Wooooohooooo
Excellent production value.
Cheers to the rider and everyone involved. Thank you!
You're the man Hank!!! Another stellar effort for a great cause. Well done mate💪💪💪💪
So he basically did an everesting and a trenching in the same ride?
A challenge intertwined... ;)
Yep, if picked up the Everesting automatically by Trenching. proper everest too as nobody has even attempted to Everest Porlock Hill
You are absolutely right (cool name, by the way Troy). Have the presenters even touched on that before?🧐
He also qualifies for the High Roleurs Society, 10km ascent in a single ride
JAMES is the face of GCN now.
What a phenomenal achievement for charity. Hank you're a machine!!! Well done
Again I need to appreciate his additude and mental strength, absolute amazing climb and what a workout.
Got to witness some of the efforts, he was a machine!
Amazing work. Have to laugh about showing up with a 28 though! Well done
Made us locals giggle that 28 hehe, thought it was going to be a semi-compact on the front too haha
59rpm for 14 hours. Nuts.
Absolutely Amazing. James keep surprising me with things that i can only imagine. Well done.
Hanks is simply “the man”!! Mad props!!
I rode this climb back in October when I was on holiday down that way. It came 40 miles into a 70 mile ride with 8k ft of climb, it is a brilliant climb, not sure if I'd fancy it that many times, mind. I did ride it a few times when I was down there though, loved it!
Give me a nudge next time you are down :-)
Please donate if you can. I don't think anyone has ever deserved it more!
Yep, very true!
Hank, you are absolutely bonkers.......and it's bloody brilliant! Chapeau 👏🏻👏🏻

WOW! Now that was impressive just from a mental challenge perspective let alone a physical one. I am off to donate this minute. Chapeau Sir.
"Cyclists are advised to dismount." Okay for superhumans. Edited to add that I think you needed a 42 and not a 32.
I'll just hold on to my maligned triple crank, thank you:)
Real cyclists wont.
No thanks the only time I'll dismount is on a gravel path and the terrain is too rocky/steep to pedal up. Otherwise the legs will will work, regardless of if they want to.
i get bored riding the same road 37 times in a year
Try 36 times?

Thank you for doing this! On Friday I did a 100 mile trainer ride to raise money for the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation. I've done plenty of centuries, and more, but had never spent more than a couple hours on a trainer. Your 24 hour Zwift ride gave me the idea to do this. Then, while I was doing my ride on Friday, and hurting really bad, I watched this trenching video. Seeing you suffering through all that helped me through my (relatively minor in comparison) suffering and got me to the end. Thank you for the inspiration!!!
Well done on the charity 💯👍👍
@@KOMHuntTV thank you!
Hank, you are amazing. A true idol for all cyclists. Thanks.
Congrats to former GCN presenter Emma Pooley on her Everesting record!
And she said that she also did that with insufficient gearing. A GCN tradition, perhaps?
If you look Porlock Hill on Google Street View (2018 imagery), there is someone climbing it up on an MTB. He is on his smallest gear and it seems to be something like 22-50.
I would quit my job if they made me do rhis
Massive repect and Congratulations Hank it was an epic ride. Power to you and the support team.
Well done Hank. Great inspiration and all for a good cause 👏
Oooops, no one took into account global warming and rising sea levels.
Obviously the higher sea levels get then the deeper the Mariana Trench gets.
