    Finally someone who doesn't just rabbit on an attempt to show how much they know. He speaks well makes pauses so you can digest info and comes across as someone who does not have an ego. As someone else says he better than the TOS education section. Thanks Riley keep them coming.

    You may have mentioned in another video: My active trader was resetting template to default after every trade. To fix this I went into Setup> General> Active Trader and unticked the "reset AT order template after sending" Great TOS instructional vids.

      Thank you for your comment. This is actually the reason why I viewed this video. I have been using TOS for almost 3 years and hadn't figured out how to save my active trader setup. Seems simple now, but it was driving me nuts having to set it up time after time. Plus I have done quite a bit of searching to get an answer. Thanks again.

    But this is VERY frustrating: when you try to use Active Trader, by default it puts in orders for ONLY DAYTIME execution. Making your fills during premarket totally broken and causing you to get stuck with bad trades. How in the hell do you change this? I've googled everywhere.
    I don't get why Thinkorswim always has the worst defaults for day trading, despite being set up for day trading. It's so freaking weird in that way.

    I have a dumb question. Say on regular stock, the ask size or bid size (in the active trader ladder) is that x 10? so..1 would really be 100 shares and showing 10=1000 shares? Thank you very much for your tutorials. I very much enjoy your style.

    • @RileyColeman
      @RileyColeman  4 роки тому

      Not a dumb question at all. The bid and ask size are just showing the number of orders out there trying to get filled. It doesn't mean that you need to fit that order to trade or you can only trade in that size. So when you have a quality of 1 it does mean 1 share or 1 contract. It doesn't mean 1x the ask size or bid size.

You can right click on a option in the options chain and click copy it should say Copy.AMZN190418C1850 for example then go to charts and click paste and it will should you a graph of the that options trading history. In this video I briefly talk about that. Maybe this is what you're looking for.. Yeah i know you have to manually add it in but whats a good percentage to not get stoped out. I seen where big firms will try to stop you out to get the stocks and make you lose money

    • @RileyColeman

      @@John-ck2hp Something you can use is the ATR indicator or the ATR trailing stop. Because stocks are not the same when it comes to volatility this will help you decide what is a general amount you could use as a stop. What the ATR is average true range. It just calculates based on volaility what is a normal move and out of a normal move. If that stock moves more then the ATR in 1 direction that is out of a normal move and probably means the stock is moving in that direction. So if that ATR is 5 and the stock moves 6 is probably a good idea to close the stock based on using this method.

    can yoou moce the stop loss up and down after the buy order was placed ? and can you move the short buy button down further if you think the stock is going lower ? How can you find out how much a short will cost you total ? Lastly what do you recommend on a stop loss , what % age up and or down ?

    • @RileyColeman
      @RileyColeman  5 років тому +1

      You can move the stop loss up and down and also the profit target by clicking and dragging it down on a chart. To find how much it takes to short a stock you need to get to the trade confirmation to see how much margin it will cost to short it. There's no simple way to calculate it because the brokerage will change that number based on multiple variables. For a stock loss you could start off with how much you are comfortable losing on 1 trade or you could use the ATR indicator and use the number that that gives you to use for an ATR.

      @@lrhomesold Yeah you got the basics right on shorting. Basically someone lends you the shares to sell to someone but basically you make money as it goes down.
      For volume you will want to go to chart settings and under general click Overlap Volume. If it doesn't show up go to the Equities tab under settings as well and clikc Show volume subgraph. That should get it to show up on the chart.

    Excellent teaching once again. I agree with Mike594594 you should get paid for this. With the Trigger with brackets. Can you change the settings from a dollar or point, to a %of the buy price? IE if I buy a share for $100.00 then having it set to sell up $1.00 is fine at 1% profit, but if I moved to another ticker symbol that was selling at only $1.00 then it would set it to sell up $1.00 being 100% profit which is too aggressive. I would like to have it so that what price I set it at it will sell at say 4% regardless of the initial share price.... hope that makes sense...

    • @RileyColeman
      @RileyColeman  5 років тому +1

      Thanks for the support! I don't believe there is a way sadly... But that would be super nice. I think you have to calculate it every time if you want to try to stay with a % stop loss.

    • @11trains

      @@RileyColeman Thanks. I thought about it afterwards and I think as it is such a excellent tool that it might be worth me setting up and trialing a range of presets that cover the share values I normally trade. IE a preset for $1.00-$2.00 shares at say 4% would have a general setting of +or minus $0.06 being the average of that range. A preset for $2.00-$5.00 shares at say 4% would have a general setting of +or minus $0.14 being the average of that range. Its not a perfect idea but I can live with that as its a fast way to get skin in the game compared to entering the exact figures manually only to find the trade has moved on from what you were looking at. From what I understand I can then move the positioning of the stops later to a more accurate positioning for my goals. Also I am way over in New Zealand so not sure about the speed of our connection so getting in at the right time may be a issue especially when live trading.... (Still paper trading for now but close to going live)

    • @RileyColeman
      @RileyColeman  5 років тому +1

      That makes a lot of sense good idea. One thing to keep in mind is some stocks are more volatile then others too. So for 1 stock a 1% move could be huge and may mean your trade isn't going to way you wanted or is and then on another stock a 4% move could be big. Something to think about.

    What is the difference between stop orders and limit orders?

    • @RileyColeman
      @RileyColeman  5 років тому +1

      A limit order is an order to buy at an exact price. So for example you can have a limit order to buy 1 share at $100.5 a stop order is an order to place a market order when a stock hits a certain price. So if you place a stop order at $100.5 and the stock hits the price of 100.5 it will put a market order in so if you have a stop loss it will put in a market sell order when the stock hits the price. But because its a market order you might not get filled at 100.5 it might be 100.4 or 100.6 depending on how fast the market is moving. But the idea behind the stop order is that you will get filled every time. With a limit order the market could tap 100.5 and reverse and you might not get filled, leaving your position still open.

      I'm assuming you want the price increments to change? On the active trader tab next to the time and sales on the vertical menu there is the tiny gear setting then there are a few other buttons as well. There is a zoom in and a zoom out button. Clicking those will change the increments that the active trader shows of the price.
