Hey Lex, I think you'd like speaking with Michael Graziano. He is a neuroscientist at Princeton, and has some pretty good ideas about the engineering problem of human consciousness, and just consciousness in general. He is the main founder and proponent of Attention Schema Theory, which is a framework for understanding and engineering consciousness.

Most look like simple balls. The thumbnail is a t4 bacteriophage. They specialize in infecting bacteria. Luckily they don't hurt humans. But yes they look like robots for sure. Most of the viruses that hurt people look like fuzzy soccer balls.

That is a bacteriophage, viruses that specificly "hunt" only bacteria, all their variants have that similar design.

I've had that very question in my thoughts for several years.
To date, I understand it is a thing, it is not alive, it has no purpose, no needs.
Therefore, I fail to comprehend explanations like 'the virus needs to get in to a cell to replicate'.

Text is an idea virus. Nothing about the shapes on this screen mean anything, not inherently. But if it gets witnessed by a susceptible brain (one that can read the language) then suddenly you have millions of neurons processing the data. Maybe that brain repeats what it read, or writes it down, the idea mutates, or it's forgotten.
This text is not an idea. But it becomes one when read, and if it's going to reproduce it will need someone to read it. That's my view of viruses, information that becomes alive and far more complicated in the right circumstance.
