Which was your favourite strategy type game of all time? 😇🕹👌 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= More from 1983: tinyurl.com/1983-C64-GAMES My Top Picks: tinyurl.com/CCGS-BEST-GAMES
I remember quite a few freeware games on the Apple IIc along these lines...space trading games, Star Trek ripoffs, etc. You could get a lot of mileage out of a grid of letters and some imagination :)
I enjoyed some quiet gaming time where I could just focus in and use my brain too... not that it worked very often haha. It was a nice break from the usual shooty/platform/racing genre 😇🕹👌
Reminds me of those games you had to type over from a book, like '15 astronomical games for the C64'. Took hours to get the typos out but they were a lot of fun. In BASIC programmers had way more features to make complex game mechanics but it was too slow for decent graphics and sound
I really enjoyed those gaming listing from the old C64 magazines. Probably where I learnt to actually type as a kid... but the amount of hours it took to figure out all the bugs was the defining factor never to pursue it any further haha. Mind you. I was always really excited to see the results and show them to my Mum 😇🕹👌
Ah yes, the game at the beginning.of the video was much more widely known. I didn't play that version until many years later, but also enjoyed it. I'll hopefully get to covering it too someday 😇🕹👌
Glad it was helpful! The game is majorly simple with the graphics but when I was a kid my imagination would run away and I was really engrossed in this very simple little game 😇🕹👌
That actually looks really awesome. Minimal as it is, you can fire up your imagination and see the Bismarck through the scope when it’s near Never heard of this one. Cheers
It was an unusual game really and nothing majorly exciting happens, however I remember being a kid and the tension of finally defeating the bismark with my brother brings back a ton of memories..shame I.cpuldnt replicate that in the video. So many great nostalgic moments playing this very simple little game 😇🕹👌
I don't know why, but I was so intrigued with this game as a kid. Maybe it was because of the '30 Games' compilation it came on... but I would usually find myself returning to this over and over, in the hunt for the Bismark! Strangely addictive 😇🕹️👌
Interesting game! Games like this are proof that fun gameplay is sometimes all that's necessary. You don't always need good graphics (or in this case... any graphics at all!)
Minimalistic graphics but really got me addicted me as a kid, admittedly it came on my favourite compilation set so I was always playing games from the 'Argus Press - 30 Games' compilation. Me & my brother used to be able to catch the Bismark together - strangely, I haven't managed to replicate that since! Gah... old age 😇🕹️👌
It's one of those games where you clear your schedule for an hour, stick the 'do not disturb' on your door, grab a good cigar and a nice bottle of whiskey... then go seek out the bismark 😇🕹👌
Ah of course... it was spotted leaving Norway. That's where it all began I suppose... glad the Brits finally caught up with this Colossal battleship as it was tearing up the North Sea 😇🕹👌
Seems very playable, but programmed in BASIC with text for graphics, come on, maybe I'm being harsh for a 1983 game? My favourite strategy game for the Commodore 64 was Theatre Europe (1985), a WW3 simulation. No-one wins a nuclear war and the game realistically portrays that. What I remember the most is the game giving me 30 seconds to call a real free phone number to obtain a special authorisation code to launch a strategic nuclear attack, you listen to a recorded message of a man crying out the code as a nuclear missile strikes. Since the phone number will be long gone the code is "Midnight Sun".
I think I was 4 when I played this, so I really didn't have massive expectations from gaming at the time. But I remember absolutely loving this for some strange reason. I was just engrossed and determined to catch that darned Bismark battleship - and one day, I did 😇🕹👌
Few weeks ago I was reading about "Ogre" board & video game, belonging to asymmetrical wargames. One big enemy against many weaker forces, and their task is to neutralize it. Apparently this game gain a lot of popularity since it appeared back in the 70's. There is also well regarded C64 version coming from Origin. Perhaps this one was influenced? But quite simply, Bismarck's historical story is so unique, that it might be easily vice versa - Ogre was influenced by Bismarck? (and the series of Bolo novels... ). Ok, maybe I'm just guessing here big time... :)
That has just unlocked a few memories for me, I remember playing 'Ogre' as a young kid... for such a simple game it is very addictive. You might be onto something here... there definitely appears to be a similar vibe going on 😇🕹️👌
It never specifies I don't believe, sometimes it seems like it moves around 4 places per turn though as I'd have it surrounded on sight but it still managed to elude my ships. Tough to catch but boy what a feeling when you finally stop it in its tracks and bring in the big boys to finish it off 😇🕹👌
There was a much better game called Bismarck released in 1987 by Personal Software Services. It was a turn based strategy where you could play as British or German, but it also had action sequences where you would command a ship, or even fly in Swordfish torpedo bomber.
I think if there was some added graphical images of the actual ships themselves it could have been much more entertaining but as it stood, for some reason, I really love this game 🤣🕹👌

Very true. Once you have patience and a good imagination you can definitely learn to love these little simplistic style games. I did, for sure 😇🕹👌
I had completely forgotten this one. 7-year old me had no idea what was going on here. 😁 Thanks for bringing back the memories, once again.
Glad it brought back some good nostalgic memories - like yourself, I played this a lot as a kid too - determined to finally destroy the Bismark 😇🕹👌
This slow-paced somewhat-relaxing game embodies the feel of real war and naval combat perfectly!
Instead of war. Everyone should just have a nice game of chess 😇🕹👌
I had a game called "Sink the Bismark" on the zx81. I think it was a type in. Didn't have a clue what the Bismark was (apart from being a boat!)
Hopefully the video has explained just how elusive the behemoth of a battleship the Bismarck really was. Still, not indestructible 😇🕹👌

Played this so much back in the day. This was probably the game that showed me I preferred the "brain" genres, wargames, SIMs, adventures and RPGs!

Me and my brother used to play the datasoft Bismarck with my dad, that brings good memories anyway 😊
Ah yes, the game at the beginning.of the video was much more widely known. I didn't play that version until many years later, but also enjoyed it. I'll hopefully get to covering it too someday 😇🕹👌
Very informative. Thank you.

You had to use your imagination for this game, but I was super enthralled with it back in the day and actually really enjoyed it 😇🕹️👌
Not one i played . Not my type of game but great video as usual

Nice! A plain ASCII interface, and even good old BASIC, can make for a nice game! The sound effects really add something, though.
I don't know why, but I was so intrigued with this game as a kid. Maybe it was because of the '30 Games' compilation it came on... but I would usually find myself returning to this over and over, in the hunt for the Bismark! Strangely addictive 😇🕹️👌

Don’t recall seeing this before. As a kid I probably wouldn’t play it. Teenage me in the 90’s and adult me now would play it
It's one of those games where you clear your schedule for an hour, stick the 'do not disturb' on your door, grab a good cigar and a nice bottle of whiskey... then go seek out the bismark 😇🕹👌
I used to call this one Skidmark...for obvious reasons...never got on with it...
Should play Super Skidmarks for the Amiga 😇🕹👌
very informative, enjoyed the history lesson as a Norwegian. never tried or seen this game before

Ah, might give this one a go actually! And is that "Brahms fourth racket" I hear in the background?
Yes, I believe it is - sometimes the games don't have music so I'll stick a tune in where I can find one 😇🕹👌
hmm this looks like it could be fun and satisfying. It must be of worth if you're making this video and highlighting it positively
It's all about the nostalgia and this game is brimming with it for me 😇🕹👌

Ah I mistook this one for the later game of the same name on the Atari ST. This version on the C64 looks pretty good though!
Definitely one for those who don't mind a strategy game with minimalistic graphics and, for those with plenty of patience 😇🕹👌
Any ideas on how many spaces the Bismarck could move per turn?
It never specifies I don't believe, sometimes it seems like it moves around 4 places per turn though as I'd have it surrounded on sight but it still managed to elude my ships. Tough to catch but boy what a feeling when you finally stop it in its tracks and bring in the big boys to finish it off 😇🕹👌

I'll be sure to check that one out too someday - and stick it on the channel 😇🕹👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Be sure to do so, you would not regret .
Wasn't for me as I would rather watch paint dry, but each their own! I can see why some people liked it and fair enough.
