That's not quite correct. Even before Bette was singing torch songs in bath houses, she was a Broadway musical actress. I believe she originated the role of Tzeitl, Tevye's eldest daughter in Fiddler on the Roof with Zero Mostel. A great artist, whether acting or singing.
She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1945. She appeared in her first movie, in a very small role, in 1966. The movie was called "Hawaii" and starred Julie Andrews, Max von Sydow, Richard Harris, and Gene Hackman.
A really great reaction to an amazing song, I cry every time I hear it! She’s singing about her best friend but, I won’t say anymore because you need to watch the movie “beaches” and it will all make sense💜🌈🙏🏻
This is such a beautiful song, and one that holds a special place in my heart. In 1996, I was going through a rough divorce and my youngest daughter, who was 11 at the time, told me she had a surprise for me in her room. She asked me to sit down, and she sang this song to me. When she was done, she told me not to cry (that didn't happen..there were flood waters) and that I was her hero. Still can't listen to this song without flashing back to that day and the memory it still holds in my heart.

@@ChanelStuff They reacted to it several months ago. Even said it's the best cover they've ever heard, but never did another. I was looking forward to more reactions , but since I think that they are one of the best reactors on UA-cam, I'm sure there's a reason they never followed up.
Her first really big hit was a cover of " The Bugey Wugey Bugle Boy of Co. B", and another big one was "The Rose" which was from a movie based on the life of Janis Joplin!! Bette started out in the bath houses of NYC, an amazing talent and personality!! Sang to Johnny Carson on his last show!!
I'm a big Bette Midler fan. She's so talented. She's hysterical in Ruthless People and Outrageous Fortune. Beaches is so touching. I lost my sister way too soon and makes me think of this film. "From a Distance" is another beauty by Bette... Blessings and keep smiling. 💗💗💗
Great Reaction guys. This song is from Beaches. A heavy movie. Bette also does a cover of the Rolling Stones "Beast of Burden". She kills it and Mick Jagger is in the vid.

I just lost one of my best friends a couple weeks ago. Before he died, he told me I was his hero for standing by him at the end of his life. I'm sure you were your friend's hero.
In the movie "Beaches" where this song is from, she's not singing to a man, she's singing to her life long friend Hillary played by The Great actress Barbara Hershey. 😎
This song was played at my cousins funeral who died of AIDS over 25 years ago. This brings me to tears every time I hear it. He was like a brother to me, we were only 3 months apart. I loved him so much😪💔 The pain of his loss still affects me.
this song relates to Bette's character in the movie paying tribute to the friend in the movie who was there for her despite her own situation, but it could easily be a romantic love song in other scenarios other than the film storyline
Almost every time I talked to my dad I would ask him ... "Did you ever know that you were my Hero?" He would say yes , I sure do. I lost my father in 2021 and I sit watching this with extreme tears rolling down my face. I miss him every single day.
Yesterday, when I was watching your re-reaction to WE ARE THE WORLD, I was just thinking "When are they going to listen to some Bette Middler" when I saw that you didn't recognize her amongst the other artists. A great vocalist who sure knows how to communicate emotions.
She was known as The Divine Miss M back in the 70's..and is legendary for her live shows.....so many more songs to listen to..... Boogie Woogie Buggle Boy is none on my favourites lol... live.
Such a beautiful song from such a beautiful voice. Bette Midler is truly amazing, and I am so glad to see you guys react to her. I have always loved this song, just as I've always loved the movie for which she recorded it. The movie is called Beaches, and it stars Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey. You guys have to watch that! As for my recommendation this time, I was going to suggest "The Rose," but since you said you've reacted to that already on patreon, I'm going to recommend something else instead. "The Rose" . . . by Conway Twitty. It's the same song as Bette Midler's, but Conway's version brings something new and amazing to the song (and, if I'm going to be honest, as much as I love Bette Midler, I actually like Conway Twitty's version of "The Rose" even more than hers). I have no doubt whatsoever that you guys will both love it.
Everytime i hear this song, i think of my beautiful, selfless Momma. Rest in peace Momma. The pain still hasn't subsided after 32yrs. I miss you and love just as much today. as yesterday and tomorrow. You were my Hero. Fly Momma Fly. Thank you
In 1992, Johnny Carson chose Bette to be his final guest when he retired. She sang "One more for my Baby." She won an Emmy for that performance. It is AWESOME!
The song was used in the movie "Beaches." It fit the movie well. Or maybe the movie fit the song. "Wings" was written in the early 1980's and recorded by several artists prior to this recording by Bette Midler.
Bette is an amazing talent. You might also want to check out: "Only in Miami", "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" (an excellent cover of the '40's Andrews' Sisters song) and "The Rose". They don't call her the Divine Miss M. for nothing!
This song is gorgeous. I recommend "The Rose" - I can never listen to it without getting a lump in my throat & shedding some tears, so make sure you have the tissues ready!
I've always said that Bette Midler is one of the few artists that literally spills her soul in every note she sings. Very few artists can do that. Watch the movie; it gives this song its context. Beaches. Total chick flick, but you leave going "I'm not crying."
This comes from the movie "beaches" which she stars in. It is my go to cry movie. When you just need to get something out of your system. I usually can't get through this song without crying..😫
Bette Midler did a movie years ago called “The Rose”. It’s believed to be based on Janice Joplin. Great movie. You really need to watch that movie. Bette is amazing in that part
Bette is a character!! What a show she puts in love, omg! She’s hysterical in a couple movies she did. BEACHES IS A MUST SEE MOVIE!! What a voice …. This song makes me cry, not in a bad way, just some old memories. I think this song is probably important to many …..
I am bawling my eyes out. This was my song for my Mom whom I lost last year (coming up on the anniversary on 4/21). When I was packing up her apartment, I actually found a music box that played this song which is now in my bedroom. Ugh. I'm a puddle. Oh my goodness. Her cat, whom I adopted after she passed, just ran over to me, cried, and rubbed against my shin. Thanks, Mom.
I haven't heard this song for years. It was the song at my brother's funeral many years ago. Many months after his funeral I just could take listening to it, I would cry my eyes dry. This evening, it was nice to hear it again.. after so many years. This song 'goes directly to the spirit' with the most deepest tender touch.
Bette Midler was a singer first and created a personality she called "The Divine Miss M". She did stage shows like you might see in Vegas, but started singing in Gay Bathhouses in NYC with Barry Manilow (yes, the famous singer, songwriter, musician) accompanying her. Her shows were legendary! She'd dress up in almost anything and do full on dance routines with a dance troupe and she'd tell risque' jokes, ala Sophie Tucker (aka The Last of the Red Hot Mamas - singer, comedian, actress in first half of 1900's). She named her daughter, Sophie. She blew everyone away with her fabulous voice, great comedic timing, wild stage show and sassy delivery. There's old videos out there and are worth seeing.
Bette Midler, though she has a great voice (and if you watch the We Are the World video again, you'll see Bette in the choir), she's best known as a comedic actress. In 1976 she was nominated for an Oscar for "The Rose", which spawned a hit song of the same name. She was in many big films in the 80s and 90s, such as Ruthless People, Outrageous Fortune, Get Shorty, and, of course, Hocus Pocus. Her nickname for decades has been "The Divine Miss M". For your next Bette song, she did a duet with Mick Jagger, a cover of the Rolling Stones' song "Beast of Burden". "From a Distance" is also a classic.
I love her in concert! What a show. You can probably find some concert footage here. She wrote a book, A View From A Broad back in the 80s. It's a great read. Barry Manilow was her piano player when they started out. She's been an advocate of the LGBT from way back. Great woman! An idol.
A phenomenal singer! She has so many beautiful songs. For a different style from the Divine Miss M (her actual nickname), you really need to check out her performance of "Beast Of Burden".
It's taken years for me to appreciate this song again. It's one of those songs that was replayed like Whitney's cover of "I Will Always Love" almost to death. However all these years later I'm able to enjoy it again. Those last notes on "fly against the sky" are lovely and the ending stanza, "thank you, thank God for you" are beautiful expressions of friendship. Don't forget: Tell your friends that you love them. They'll appreciate it.
This movie, "Beaches", is one of my Mom's all-time FAVOURITE 80s movies, and I have yet to see it entirely, but the clips I have seen are so awesome! Whenever this song comes up on the 80s music streaming service we have, my mom always tears up when she hears the chorus. The movie hits really close to home for her and I love hearing this song! Thank you from both of us for playing it!
even though I had very hard days. when I saw her down, I told her how proud I was of her and that she was stronger than all of us. but she told me that inside she was broken too and that I gave her the strength to go on. , and I never knew that until my graduation day. it changed my life in that moment. thank you for playing this and uplifting me again. today you both are the wind beneith my wings God bless.
If you haven't seen Beaches, it's a must. The lyrics fit the movie perfectly. And it will break your heart. It's the epitome of a "best friend" movie.

Y'all definitely need to watch The Rose.
Indeed. The Rose is amazing. I like the japanese version of it from Only Yesterday too.
you must see the movie "Beaches" OMG-this song will mean SO much more!! Great Movie!! It is about the friendship between two women.
Great song she also has a all time favorite The Rose
They already reviewed it.
@@MChantal76 I can’t find it then to watch it
@@TheArb9500 It's on the Patreon channel.
We had this at my mums Funeral - still brings me to tears now. In 10 years, I lost my mum, Dad and Sister - music was a big part of all their lives and is very powerful in invoking memories
Oh boy. Dammit with this song! Always makes me cry… if you havent seen the movie that it goes with? Bette Midler in Beaches, and shes singing this about her best friend. Allllll the feels! Great reaction 🖤
Her depiction of a Sanderson sister in “Hocus Pocus” is comic genius. She sang “”I Put a Spell on you” is one of the best covers
Have you heard Angelina Jordan's version of it? It's truly phenomenal. I think she was like 9 or 10 when she covered it
@@ChanelStuff They reacted to it several months ago.
I remember that one, She' was fabulous in that too.
And Barry Manilow was her piano player in those bath houses..lol...
"Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B", originally by The Andrews Sisters. Jay/Amber would like both versions.
She does a great rendition of “when a man loves a woman” in “The Rose” movie. Need to do a reaction to that version of the song!
I remember she had Johnny Carson in tears with her song!
Love Bette, and this song became best pick for many a funeral, pretty sure she didn't expect that. Great song
This song always makes me think of my mom. My mom always stood back to let her husband and kids shine.
Such a beautiful voice her tones is so rich and powerful.
Yesss! I love this song, it's from the movie Beaches, which is a must see if you haven't seen it.
I loved that movie 🙋🏻♀️
I'm a big Bette Midler fan. She's so talented. She's hysterical in Ruthless People and Outrageous Fortune. Beaches is so touching. I lost my sister way too soon and makes me think of this film. "From a Distance" is another beauty by Bette... Blessings and keep smiling. 💗💗💗
Yes, she's one of the best comedic actresses.
Loved Outrageous Fortune and the one she did with Lilly Tomlin...Big Business I think
@@r.rodriguez1257 yes!! I love Big Business too!! 🤣🤣🤣
She was also in The First Wife's Club.
Outrageous fortune is hilarious. She's an amazing actress her comedy timing just 👏👏👏
Great Reaction guys. This song is from Beaches. A heavy movie. Bette also does a cover of the Rolling Stones "Beast of Burden". She kills it and Mick Jagger is in the vid.
Yes!! I forgot about Beast of Burden.....another hidden gem that was fire!!
One of my favorite videos/songs..her version of Beast of Burden!
Great song!
Like many others, we played this song at my mother's funeral and, to this day, it always brings tears. You'll always be my hero Mom. Thanks for being the wind beneath my wings.
I dedicated this song to my BEST FRIEND/"SISTER" we were BF from diapers, she battled cancer her whole life but lost this last time, she passed away 💔 but I played her this song the night b4 she passed she was on hospice care and I like to belive she heard and understood it...a piece of me died w/her...bless yall and your channel yall r awsome ...t.y. 😍
(((Hugs))) So sorry for your loss
Bless Your Heart, that had to be rough. Trust me when I tell You she Heard You, Felt You and Loves You. She will always be with you in your ❤. What a Beautiful Story of You and Your BF. God be with You and Comfort Your Soul. Much Love from California Kat ❤
I just lost one of my best friends a couple weeks ago. Before he died, he told me I was his hero for standing by him at the end of his life. I'm sure you were your friend's hero.
@@buster9106 t.y for saying it sorry about ur friend too..
@@heidikleckawoodward20 thank you. The pain is still so raw.
In the movie "Beaches" where this song is from, she's not singing to a man, she's singing to her life long friend Hillary played by The Great actress Barbara Hershey. 😎
And the then child actor, Mayim Bialik, played young Bette when the kids were growing up!
The Rose...From a Distance are anothers worth a look..
They already reviewed The Rose.
This song was played at my cousins funeral who died of AIDS over 25 years ago. This brings me to tears every time I hear it. He was like a brother to me, we were only 3 months apart. I loved him so much😪💔 The pain of his loss still affects me.
Lydia: Lots n lots of hugs! Sorry for your loss😥
@@anniemhopeful1733 Thank you💕
this song relates to Bette's character in the movie paying tribute to the friend in the movie who was there for her despite her own situation, but it could easily be a romantic love song in other scenarios other than the film storyline
Almost every time I talked to my dad I would ask him ... "Did you ever know that you were my Hero?" He would say yes , I sure do. I lost my father in 2021 and I sit watching this with extreme tears rolling down my face. I miss him every single day.
The movie "The Rose" is a CLASSIC!! It's a movie I'll pull out every now and again to remind me of being human.
My favorite movie of all time. Bette deserved the Oscar she didn't get....
Yesterday, when I was watching your re-reaction to WE ARE THE WORLD, I was just thinking "When are they going to listen to some Bette Middler" when I saw that you didn't recognize her amongst the other artists. A great vocalist who sure knows how to communicate emotions.
I thought the same. :)
You should react to her singing “The Rose”, will bring you to tears 😭
Apparently they did, but in their members only part. Love The Rose, and loved the movie.
Makes me cry...every single time. Too many people like this don't get the recognition that they deserve...
Amber is sooo good with words. "Appreciative of letting someone shine and not dimming their spotlight".
She was known as The Divine Miss M back in the 70's..and is legendary for her live shows.....so many more songs to listen to..... Boogie Woogie Buggle Boy is none on my favourites lol... live.
Make that the 70's.
One of the all time great love songs/wedding songs. Bette Midler nails the vocal. One more ballad from Bette is "From a Distance."
"From a Distance" is a good one!
You reacted again yesterday to “We Are the World”. Bette Midler was in it also.
Bette is an amazing talent. You might also want to check out: "Only in Miami", "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" (an excellent cover of the '40's Andrews' Sisters song) and "The Rose". They don't call her the Divine Miss M. for nothing!
The Rose is one of my favorites.
This song is gorgeous.
I recommend "The Rose" - I can never listen to it without getting a lump in my throat & shedding some tears, so make sure you have the tissues ready!
Yes, arm hair raises every time
This is not her singing about her man! She is singing about her best friend a girl ..who is dying in the movie Beaches ..you need to see the movie...
In her prime, nobody could touch Bette milder
Her vocal skills were beyond compare
And she is a lovely genuine person! Had the priviledge of meeting her back in the 70's at a party when I was 16. She was so gracious and kind.
Not Karen Carpenter
I still think she was the best Mama Rose in Gypsy on Broadway.
I mean, I ADORE me some Patti Lupone but no one does crazy like Bette.
Somebody forgor about Barbara Striesand. Both of the ladies voices are out of this world!
I've always said that Bette Midler is one of the few artists that literally spills her soul in every note she sings. Very few artists can do that. Watch the movie; it gives this song its context. Beaches. Total chick flick, but you leave going "I'm not crying."
...while tears are pouring down your face and you seem to be having trouble breathing
I still cry just thinking about that movie. Tearjerker is an understatement!
We played this at my sister’s funeral. It makes me both cry and smile every time I hear it still. Thanks for checking it out! ❤️
Always brings a tear to my eye.❤
Bette is an American icon ❤
This was my song ti my mom. This is the first time listening to it since she passed almost 2 yrs ago. I'm bawling like a baby. I miss her so much.
Me too my dad is gone and was my heto❤
This comes from the movie "beaches" which she stars in. It is my go to cry movie. When you just need to get something out of your system. I usually can't get through this song without crying..😫
Huge talent. She was part of "We are the World" as well.
Bette Midler did a movie years ago called “The Rose”. It’s believed to be based on Janice Joplin. Great movie. You really need to watch that movie. Bette is amazing in that part
There is so much emotion in Bette Midler's singing, she is exquisite.
Bette is a character!! What a show she puts in love, omg! She’s hysterical in a couple movies she did. BEACHES IS A MUST SEE MOVIE!! What a voice …. This song makes me cry, not in a bad way, just some old memories. I think this song is probably important to many …..
From the movie soundtrack to “Beaches”. The song depicts her relationship to her best friend. We can all relate to that.
If you love Bette’s version of I Put a Spell on you, you have to hear Annie Lennox’s version…she rips the roof off that song.
You need to hear her sing "The Rose" a tribute to Janis Joplin.
They already reviewed it.
They said up front that they reviewed it sometime back on their Patreon so they've heard it.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PERFOMANCE AND SONG BY MS M . I'm 73 and getting chills. THE MOVIE WAS ONE OF THE BEST , MUST WATCH
"Beaches" is an absolute must-watch, as everyone else says. She's not singing about a man, but about her best friend.
This song brings a tear to my eyes every time I hear it because she puts so much emotion in this song .
this song is a tear jerker for sure. beautiful voice. Guys, react to -- From a distance -Bette Midler
Such a beautiful song. ❤️
this song has turned into and daddy/daughter dance at wsddings. itcame from her movie , beaches, and she's singing about her long time best friend.
True!
The movie that this song is from was Beaches, not The Rose!
I love her in concert! What a show. You can probably find some concert footage here. She wrote a book, A View From A Broad back in the 80s. It's a great read. Barry Manilow was her piano player when they started out. She's been an advocate of the LGBT from way back. Great woman! An idol.
She also starred in For The Boys with James Caan. I love that movie!
@@nancymunroe3672 I didn't say this was from The Rose. I just said the was a song called The Rose from the movie of the same name.
Yes, must watch the movie! Such a beautiful story.
Watched this film dozens of times , always makes me cry my eyes out , requested it for my sister's funeral , she was my best friend growing up xxx
Great artist. Her take on "Beast of Burden" is something to see!
A phenomenal singer! She has so many beautiful songs. For a different style from the Divine Miss M (her actual nickname), you really need to check out her performance of "Beast Of Burden".
Yes! I second that. 🤗
I always relate this song to someone who has died. I think of my mom. This song was sung at the end of the movie Beaches after a sad scene.
Me too - my mom.
Yes yes yes , you have to watch beaches, you will ugly cry. She's got so many ranges both acting and musically.
This was my mom's favorite song and she passed away in 2017 from Cancer. I cry every time I hear this song. Thank you for reacting to this song.
Her movie "The Rose" would be up Amber's alley, since she plays a very Janis Joplin-like singer.
This was by far my favorite Bette Midler song.
even though I had very hard days. when I saw her down, I told her how proud I was of her and that she was stronger than all of us. but she told me that inside she was broken too and that I gave her the strength to go on. , and I never knew that until my graduation day. it changed my life in that moment. thank you for playing this and uplifting me again. today you both are the wind beneith my wings God bless.
