The funniest yet most annoying thing in this game is when you climb up some cliff for a solid minute and once you finally get to the top some random enemy you couldn't guess was there proceeds to throw you back down, and you have to watch Link ragdolling all the way down knowing he won't survive the fall, so you're just waiting for death.
I think that BotW bases the damage taken from how long the torso portion of Link's body has fallen and at a certain speed. If you notice, when Link lands on his legs, he took no damage and the ragdoll physics ended up having Link land on his torso area, and then the damage registered. If anything, it's most likely based off of "X meters traveled while falling = damage taken", as seen when Link rolls off a cliff.
It's funny but also unsettling how Link falls like a rag doll when he gets launched/falls/rolls down a mountain or hill. I remember I accidentally fell off the first Tower you need to activate and Link's butt was in the air when he hit the ground. XD I was like, "Oh my..." and "LOL" at the same time.
