    I wish they sold these in stores. My grandpa was an avid mushroom hunter and picking up these was always a "prize find". breaded and deep fried they are amazing.

    Nice video, came across some hen and chicken today that I plan to let grow another day or so then pick. Good info in this video about cleaning, preparing, and storing.

    Something for you to try. Do exactly what you did here. But add some minced shallots and saute. Get it mostly cooked through and deglaze with white wine. Add heavy cream and reduce. Pour that sauce over a steak, or chops or what ever. Thanks me later! Love the vids.

      Something that my dad loves to do that I'm sure a lot of you have heard of and have probably done it's a recipe that is pretty common he takes portobello mushrooms but this would probably be excellent I don't know what this tastes like but any mushroom I assume is probably an excellent flavor and and you basically take mushrooms and chunks of potatoes about I don't know double the size of a thumbnail you know chop them up into quarter size pieces and then Polska kielbasa and I want to say red cooking wine I want to say that he uses marsala I could be wrong correct me if I am thinking of the wrong wine but it's pretty common of a recipe you just basically saute that sucker together and then put the lid on and let it cook and super good and it's excellent if you want to try that with steak as opposed to Polska kielbasa. But yes shallots and steak would be really good any kind of cooking wine preferably marsala is really good my dad made recently a couple years ago a really good homemade Salisbury steak now I'm used to the Salisbury steak that comes in a TV dinner little flabby fake meat version that comes with dark gravy and mashed potatoes looks like something you'd serve out of a school cafeteria I love those and then my dad made a real homemade version and I was like this is not the same he's like actually this is what it was supposed to be you're just not used to having the real thing you're used to having the TV dinner version which is not real Salisbury steak but to me that's what Salisbury steak is not a hamburger but my dad says the hamburger version is what was the original version but I guess he basically made a really thick thick burger like imagine making a fist with your hand and that being how tall the burger was and the burger was just a slight bit bigger than your fist it was awesome and he basically did Lipton Onion soup mix and gravy and kind of put that inside of it a little bit and then used the majority of the Lipton Onion soup mix and gravy in a pot to put on top with a little bit of mushrooms and again using portabella or button but we prefer portabella but this would be probably super good cut up small enough and he put in Marsala wine into the gravy and you cooked it down oh it was so good poured on top of both the mashed potatoes and the homemade burger Salisbury steak thing so I don't know what this sheepshead taste like but I assume it would be really good in that every mushroom probably tastes really good with marsala

    Hey John great video! I've been picking these for years, usually get a couple hundred pounds a year (not lying). Anyway, if you already haven't tried it you should pressure can some. They last forever and you can use them so many different ways. We put them in spaghetti sauce, on pizza, or just open them up, drain, and sauté.

    The part you said to cut off and dont eat at 2:10 is the best part of the mushroom. It makes great hearty slices.

    The more you stir with a utensil the more water any mushroom will release. Stir once at the beginning to coat then only toss and swirl using the pan handle. If you use this technique you will always get perfectly golden shrooms

    ..... Those tough parts can be used to make broth.. They are nutritious and th broth can be used to make mushroom sauce.. I dry them and Dryad's Saddle for future broth..

    @flamedrag18 9 років тому

    have any oaks on your property? ever try to transplant some of the mushrooms near the trees and see if they'll grow there? have your own personal mushroom patch.

    • @Leatherwoodoutdoors2
      @Leatherwoodoutdoors2  9 років тому

      never tried that but i know you can buy plug spore and drill it into trees or even just an old oak log and it will grow.

      ***** I bet it would work just with the mushroom flesh, you can grow mycelium from mushrooms, it's all the same organism. that I have done myself with button mushrooms from the store. nothing to lose except maybe a dime sized piece of mushroom.

    when I saw you by your tree stump, it made me think of all the times the kids and i have just kicked the heck out of mushrooms just to have them come right back...i had no idea they were edible. they looked so nasty. we gathered morels but only got a handful and they were gritty even though i soaked them in saltwater. we will never waste our time on those again. maybe something more meaty would be more suitable for us.

    People need to be very very careful about gathering mushrooms from the forest themselves. If they aren't careful and know what they are doing they could very easely pick a poisonous one and get sick, or worse yet, kill themselves. Still, this was a very good vid and thank you for posting.

    I love your videos but what amazes me is, why does everyone cook their mushrooms the same way??? Butter and garlic. Geez, look up an Indian, Italian, French ....recipe, and use them in an amazing way. I do a helluva lot of walking to get my babies and I’m certainly not gonna cook them in the same boring, but good, way every time.
