Love this lens and I'm so glad I bought it. I used the 18mm to document the my son's birth, then bought the 23mm later out of curiosity and now I prefer the 23mm. The aperture ring is much nicer to use and the focal length is very practical for documentary and every day photos. I might try the Viltrox 13mm for an ultrawide look next...
Congratulations on your son! Yup - the 23mm is practically glued to my camera. Nothing "boring" about it. Actually it is a very useful/ideal focal length for indoor shooting of the sort you were doing (I know because I did the same thing with a 23mm/56mm combo). I've heard nothing but good things about the Viltrox.
The viltrox 13mm is one of my favs for family moments. Super sharp, quick, quiet focus and gets a lot of the environment in which I love for indoor/at home moments. And it doesn’t distort as much as I found with the rokinon 12mm. Hopefully, viltrox will bring the same build quality to the rest of their line.
Hi. Thx for video - good work ;) Please let me know for XT-4 Fujifilm XF 23mm F1.4 R LM WR it is good idea ? Maybe Fujifilm XF 23mm F1.4 R / 2.0 R is better option for 26 Mpix sensor ?
Would you recommend 18mm or 23mm for video and occasional photo shooting lens? I will also have the Viltrox 27mm for photos, but I'm looking for a versatile video lens. At first, I was planning to go with 18mm, because it's a bit wider and 23mm is close to 27mm but in your review, you mentioned that with 18mm the autofocus is louder and I'm wondering if it is picked up by shotgun mic as well?
I am trying to decide between the 23mm vs the 33mm 1.4. I'm leaning heavily towards the 33 1.4 since I have the Viltrox 13mm 1.4 lens. Excellent video as always.
I was in the same boat. I own an X100V though, so I went with 33. I also own the Viltrox 13 and Sigma 56. The 33 fits really nicely in the middle and the cropping potential out of the new 40 MP sensor is keeping me from the 23… for now. Lol
Boht of them are equally excellent. The choice depends solely on for what and how you intend to use it, so it is not possible to answer this question without further context.
This lens deserves "legendary" status. Amazing IQ and solid AF performance on the XT3 - razor share f/1.4 to f/11. This is my go-to lens for most indoor people shooting. The con is the price - $900 is a lot to ask IMO, for a little prime. But it did go on sale for $750 recently - a much more reasonable price though I'd prefer something like $600-$700. But if only all of Fuji's lenses were this all-around excellent. It looks like you're testing the 56mm WR soon as well. I'd be very interested in your testing with AF-C in good / bad light. I find it to be a relatively fast, accurate lens with amazing image quality, but haven't had many changes to test AF-C. Not only wide-open, but stopped down to f/5.6 or so. In poor light/working closer to the MFD I have found it to be rather frustrating.
The new lenses (18mm, 23mm, 33mm) are often shown without the lens hood in reviews. But why? The normal use of this lenses are with the lens hood. I suspect this is because the lens, which is already much too big, looks even bigger. And that is exactly the major disadvantage of the new lenses: too big!
@@TheHybridShooter lol back ;-) How do you take photos usualy? With or without lens hood? Question was: "... often shown without the lens hood in reviews. But why? "
80% without lens hood. Local Fujifilm office stores lenses for reviews without lens hoods and I always forget to ask for it. There is no conspiracy, sorry.
@@TheHybridShooter Thank you for answering, is understandable for me. I always use lenses with lens hood and am certainly not an exception and would have wished accordingly to see the lens more often in use with lens hood. Apart from that: well done review!
Sometimes you want to photograph murals or other surfaces that you want all in focus. Actually my 23mm 2.0 works great. And there's that option of shooting a square format, and that solves everything.

Super glad you did this video. My 23mm arrived in the mail this morning so I'm watching it as I unbox it 😂
Great video. How would you compare this lens with for example Sony 35 1.8/Samyang 35 1.8/Canon RF 35 1.8? Is Fuji superior in terms of sharpness/CA?
Thank you! Full frame cameras have huge pixel density advantage, so direct comparison is not possible.
Great review.
Thank you!

Get the 33, its excellent

I suppose people would like to know the difference in image quality at f2.0 from this 1.4 lens to the 2.0 lens version.
Have you tried the Viltrox V2 23mm? Considering both lenses
Not with 40 MP sensor.
Can someone please explain the difference between this lens and the XF23mmF1.4 R. I am trying to decide which one to get.
This is the new version, better in every way.
I prefer 40mm equivalent… what do you recommend for APS-C Fujifilm?
Probably waiting for Viltrox 27mm F1.2
@@TheHybridShooter Thank you sir. I wasn't aware of that one coming. Will keep an eye open.

Isn't the 'noise in the corners' just as a result of the vignette/correction?
Yes, it is explained later in the video.

Corner Sharpness?? If people are looking at the corners of your photos, then your photos are not that interesting to begin with.
lol, what a great retro comment. I haven’t heard this one since 2013.
BS, I always look entire photo not only what is in centre especially landscape
