I watched the video and wanted to say thanks for making a video that could help others. It’s not always easy to admit you made a mistake and weren’t totally ready for a power outage. You also deserve some props for having your house electrical box properly (professionally?) configured to direct connect the generator into your house wiring. That makes everything easy and safe. No extension cords running everywhere to power things.

I actually appreciated that you waited until you had an emergency to make this video because it somehow makes it more real. I'm thinking of buying this unit and am trying to learn more about it.

Thanks for the feedback and please remember to subscribe to the channel 😊. This is a great item. It's not cheap and that is why I got a Honda. Well built.

Hey Ray, i appreciate the honesty! I'm on a private 240v well and this is the best bang for the buck. It's on my shopping list

    Studio Ray,
I may have missed it, but it looked like you only put a half quart of oil in the generator. It takes a full quart, to slightly more, (1-1.1qt). I have the same one. That is likely why you had the oil faults. Mine has never done that.
Hopefully you used treated fuel. If not, you need to get some in there, and run it. You seem to not use the generator often at all. Untreated regular pump gas may make it very difficult to start the next time you need it.
If you ran it for ten hours during the outage, or close to ten hours it is due an oil change. You have a bunch of small pieces of break in metal floating around in your oil that you will want to change out, before it damages that very expensive generator.
Most everything else you said was spot on. Nice video.
A constructive suggestion, if the wind isn't too bad, consider covering it with a plastic folding table in the rain, when running. It wasn't my idea. I learned that from UA-cam.
I enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work! :-)

Yeah, I stated in video with a side note. I waited for a blackout (bad idea) and didn't have enough oil. Thanks God I didn't damage my engine. I added more oil the following morning.

I like that idea about a folding table. And I did put some gas treatment in the gas tank. Thanks. Please subscribe to the channel.

Wow, as a mechanically inclined guy it was painfull watching you run a $4000 Honda generator with only half the required oil in it. You put the equivalent of thousands of hours of wear and tear on that unit in one night of use. The break-in period is very critical to the units longevity. You really should have purchased a $800 Chinese branded unit from Lowe's and saved us Honda lovers the pain and suffering you put us through.

    • @DIYRAY
      @DIYRAY  4 роки тому +2

Yea, I'm sorry for the pain. But it was hurting me more but the unit is fine and working well. As the title stated "Don't do this with your Honda" Thanks for the feedback and please remember to subscribe to the channel.

I’d bet it’s no big deal… the engine always had positive oil pressure (I’m guessing it has low-oil safety cutout). And the oil filter did its job to clean any particles from the break in. Now, running with half the oil for an extended time will indeed cause wear as the filter won’t keep up with the oil that’s degrading much faster than the maintenance interval calls for. Anyways, good on you to post this video for others to learn from. Good stuff.

If you thought it is quiet with ecothrottle off, you should hear how quiet when you flip that switch on :)
Joking aside, once the engine warms up, you should turn ecothrottle for longer runtime out of your fuel and quieter engine noise. It will not limit how much power the generator can output.
Just a tip for anyone who may be watching, the user manual indicates that you can fry your generator and household equipment if you flip the 120/240 volt switch while the generator is running. I noticed that it was in 120 only mode right before you went over to your panel and I was really hoping that that the next scene wasn't going to be a fried generator!

Thanks for the tip. We a several power outage this past year. This Honda is great! Runs my whole house w/o a sweat. Yes, I had it in 120 when a 1st started using it but how its in 240 Volt. I haven't used it in eco throttle, haven't had the need too. But will keep your tip in mind. Please remember to subscribe to the channel.

Buy good oil for it & change it. Also drain the gas. Get some no ethanol gas for it the regular stuff you guy at the gas pump goes gad in less than a few months. I use stuff called MO gas I get it at a small airport. Lasts much better.

I don't think it's a "hours since last oil change" indicator, it's a TOTAL RUN TIME timer. There shouldn't be a reset for it.

Do yourself a BIG favor, use Synthetic oil, one FULL quart, add a magnetic drain plug, a magnetic dipstick. That oil you used in this video it's only good for break in, is crap. That machine is the Lexus of the generators.

Let's troubleshoot the machine number one make sure you have gas number two make sure you have enough oil. Number three make sure the gas is fresh. Number for check your spark plugs. Replace them. Also make sure you drain the gas if it's been sitting there for a while. I hope these tips have helped. Please remember to subscribe to the channel 😊

Wow, the first thing you do is add oil (1.1quart or ~1 liter) and gas and break in your genset by running it under low to mid watt various loads for an ~hour then change oil, then at 20-25 hrs you change the oil again, you don't go straight to backing up the power on your house with it, and you certainly don't flip the switch from 120V to the 120-240V when it already connected, obviously you don't know a lot about equipment operations, might be a good idea to educate yourself if you are going to make equipment info videos.......
