Some of those B&L clips you saw were from a series of wartime shorts featuring a character called Private Snafu. They were made for US soldiers to watch during WWII, so they were able to get away with more risque jokes and visuals (i.e. "booby traps", the topless mermaids, Snafu saying "Ah, da hell with it", etc.).

They were also directed by the Looney Tunes crew (Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng) and were written by a young Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss).

I remember seeing a show called "tooned" which talked about the history of cartoons, they mentioned Private Snafu as teaching soldiers not to reveal military secrets and it being by Dr. Seuss. So they did this whole bit:
And if I hung you from a boat?
Not even if you cut my throat
      What if I should electrocute?
Go ahead, I'll still stay mute
What if I make it hot as hell (holding a flamethrower)
      Go ahead, I'll never tell.
      WILL YOU STOP RHYMING?
Sorry it was written by Dr. Seuss
      OH CURSE THAT DR. SEUSS!
I'm thristy, may I have some juice?
      STOP IT!!!!!!

The scenes that had a lot of military were made by Warner for the military, it was there own way of giving entertainment to the troops, so a lot of the material is adult in it's own right. The series was called Private Snafu.

8:21 that cartoon has been widely used out of context over the years. it is in fact not a hidden away secret cartoon that proofs disney's secret embrace of the moustache guy's regime, but is actually a wartime propaganda piece called "der fuehrer’s face", in which donald has a nightmare in which he's living in ww2 germany. during the piece he is under constant surveillance by the military, has to hide the little food he has, and is forced to work non-stop in the factories. the piece ends with donald waking up in his bed under the watchful eyes of a model of the statue of liberty, overjoyed that he doesn't have to live in these horrible conditions. it's amazing how easily you can make something look really bad, if you rob it off all context.

Walt Disney, who secretly agreed with nazi ideology, was facing bankruptcy after making the movie "Fantasia" and his company would have went under if he didn't make these propaganda cartoons for the US government.

It looked like you were confused about the "Stag Reel" Bugs Bunny got upset about. In case you didn't know, a "stag reel" or "Stag film" was a dirty movie, usually shown at bachelor parties. Also, gotta say, "Coldernell, Alaska" is a great pun. Also, also, the mermaid cartoon was one of those they used to show to GIs in training back during WWII. This one appears to be about camouflage.

Yeah Sargent snafu I know about it. It was actually played for the army during ww2 and exclusively for the men to teach them lessons on equipment usage. It disappeared after the war quite literally as it was only made for that purpose. The military still has them in storage somewhere but never shows them.

I remember growing up watching the Loony Toons and Merry Melodies cartoons on TV back in the late 60s and early 70s, often with my father, and both of us had a great laugh at them all. We also watched Little Rascals, the Three Stooges, and the old B-movie comedy movies starring Laurel and Hardy, Ma and Pa Kettle, the Marx Brothers, and Abott and Costello. They reminded my dad of "the Hoover days" or "good ole days," as he called the 1930s Depression Era he grew up in and his service in the U.S. Army during WWII. I appreciated all these films and cartoons as fine entertainment. I had little idea then as a young kid that most of the jokes in those cartoons were sexual inuendo and double entendres, until I got a little older and figured out that they were really not produced for kids. Some of them are even downright racist, which is indeed troubling. I agree with coach, it is a shame that a lot of them are no longer sown on TV anymore. American culture has changed, the risqué stuff has come under question a lot these days. These cartoons are indeed a product of our parents' and grandparents' generation and culture. Perhaps they should be shown again with a parental warning and adult advisory. Thanks for the clips Teach and Coach. These cartoons still make me laugh.

That last one with Porky Pig was created in 1938 as part of a blooper reel. Legend has had it that Warner Bros. fired everyone even remotely involved in making the Porky Pig gag, but I doubt it. Mel Blanc was by then the voice of Porky Pig, which he began voicing in 1937. Warner Bros. certainly never fired Blanc.

Many of the B&W cartoons are "pre-code" (or made before the Hays code, which was the censorship standard at the time) was written or implemented. Others were made for the US DoD (Department of Defense) and not subject to the Hays code. In that case, those cartoons were only shown to service men durring the second world war, and not shown to the general public.

  • @TheMoonshadowMysteryChannel

I would not really call Private Snafu a "classic cartoon", mostly because technically speaking it was a classified WW2 training film series used to help educate soldiers. Literacy rates weren't especially high so visual aids that caught the attention were necessary. Thus they weren't held to the same standards and practices of those aired in theaters for the kiddos to enjoy between the news reels and films.

    • @TheMoonshadowMysteryChannel
      @TheMoonshadowMysteryChannel Рік тому

Also the Donald Duck picture was a Walt Disney war propaganda film produced to emphasize the horrors of being beneath the Nazi regime and how lucky Americans at the time were to live in America. The title is "Der Fuehrer's Face", and the tune from the picture is even quoted in other programs in later years: For example Alan Alda as his character Captain Benjamin Franklin Pierce aka "Hawkeye" in an episode of M*A*S*H starts to sing it.
