Kirsten Flagstad was one of the voices I grew up with... the first time I heard her sing was a recording of Liebstod and it knocked me back..then I heard a recording of Tristan and Isolde with her and Lauritz Melchior. Tears poured down and I've never been the same since...
I studied the last of these songs in college and I could never take the longest phrase toward the end in one breath. Flagstad had incredible breath support!
gorgeous singing and interpretation by the great Kirsten Flagstad. The interpretation of these intimate lieder reflects Flagstad's musicianship and Edwin MacArthur's great partnering-Both artists bring this music to new heights.
The caption says recorded circa 1953, but these were recorded in London in March of 1956. I love her open low notes, she does not have to go into her chest voice. Her voice was big enough, even in the lower register, that she didn't have to do that.
Such A WARM richly sonorous Embracing voice..softest to loud.yet so CLEAR ..and precise in every nuance she wants! Anxcthat LEGATO us so true!! Perfection as the human voice.. could be! It inspires descriptions that should only be poetic...you feel as if an OCEAN I magically lifting and soaring jn thd air and descending on you and wrapping around...I mean so just don t suffice...you just close eyes and be inside a world sll its own of great beauty. ...how was SHE possible?
+VivaRenata Sorry but I couldn't disagree more - to me MacArthur is always wooden and unimaginative - and it's a strange story that she picked him in the first place. Too bad Dalton Baldwin wasn't around then!
VivaRenata I corresponded with Edwin McArthur for about three years before he died, and even went to his studio in The Ansonia Hotel for a nice meeting in 1985. He accompanied me in one song, which was a thrill...
Then you understand! I studied with McArthur 1978-82. I learned so much during those years! My voice teacher was Shirlee Emmons, who appeared with Melchior in night clubs after leaving the Met, and also wrote his biog. McArthur is vastly underrated!
You couldn't be more wrong. When I was working on the biography of Set Svanholm (Mästersångaren från Västerås, published in Sweden by Atlantis 2015), I met with Einhard Luther, friend and biographer of Max Lorenz with a long career in German radio and massive publications behind him. Since he knew that I had studied with McArthur he asked me why he was so neglected as an operatic conductor. To him it was a mystery! McArthur knew how to breathe with a singer, adjust tempi to the singer's voice. Listen to those recordings from the late 30s that he did with Flagstad and Melchior - he can even get Melchior to behave like a musician - and that is really something!

Glorious Flagstad as always but some credit to the best accompanist of them all Edwin McArthur!
