I backed this game for 150 dollars three years ago and I don't even get aloha access that you can now buy for 120, and get beta access with that too.

star citizen players can actually play the alpha infinitely until release with a 45 dollar one time entrance fee. at this point most ships in store are for sale in game and permanent
All their packages have been based on the Kickstarter. This one is just a trimmed down Kickstarter package without game time and cosmetics. To pay normal game prices now would be a slap in the face to the people that bought those.

The Alpha key includes Test Realm acess. i.e. Alpha builds go to Alpha servers, eventually it's close enought to release that they open up Beta servers and builds move to that (at some cadance). At the same time Alpha Servers become Test i.e. PTR. So you continue to play with our alpha key, get acess to the content before it hits Beta and there will also be some NDA PTR testing. Eventually B1 ends, you lose access to test and the game launches.
Some people have both Beta and Alpha keys, some have just Beta, but most alpha players will stay on test since 1) more content 2) have been playing for ages, so why move to beta.

How are they milking? You don't need to test the game,so you don't need to buy an alpha key. I bet a lot of people that buy keys think they will get to play a game. They will be very disappointed.
I do however also think that people getting to pay to be playtesters is a bit questionable. But if it's to choose between that and get a game to play for 10+ years and a game with a publisher that is constantly rushed and dies after less than two years like New World the choice seems pretty easy.

Weekends only at the start actually makes a lot of sense. Early on the game is going to be buggy and broken. This gives them 4 workdays a week to patch the game. As time goes by it'll be in better shape and won't need as much downtime

@@ryuno2097 people are desperate for what they hope is a quality mmo. As to why Intrepid doesn't just hire QA testers they do have internal testers. Also they had 10k people buy into aloha 1 at a minimum of $400 and something like 100k have bought into A2 at $250 minimum why wouldn't they take that cash? 100k players will also provide a lot more feedback than just a couple internal testers.

it would be scummy if they advertised this as an early release. Since they are advertising this as a test then its all good. Plus since he isn't asking or forcing you to do it then you can wait with me until launch and pay $15 a month to play.

This is what called "Milking players", and this game is in development for +7 years by having a huge budget and team and the game still is not closed to be finished for another 3-4 years more...
In fairness, as much as I think the price for JUST the alpha key (not even beta included) is not great, full scale MMO's that actually want to succeed take upwards of 10+ years most of the time to be launched.
Stephen is a veteran. Development costs money. Funds get reinvested into future development. Lots of content for the number 1 Kickstarter in the world.
This is the only game that can become the wow killer currently in development. If money helps increase content I'll buy in.

Every WoW killer title for many mmorpg in decades are always killed themself.
Elyon mmorpg, the development time exceeded a lot and at the end it failed and closed very short time. AoC is doing it to itself. However, main subject here is that most of the kickstart promised contents' %60-70 are not applied to the game fully yet still while it is +7 years. Alpha 2 will finish within May 2025 too. We are getting old already...
Lineage 2, Aion, Archeage, Tera Online, Wild Star and some of other mmorpgs I have enjoyed mainly but at the end, these mmorpgs are killed themself, just because thy want to more money...
To be fair: Just don't buy it? It's an alpha, it's a test, it's nothing but fomo if you spend money. Ignore everything, wait till it is released an play something else till them. Easy solution. And complaining about dev time is stupid. Look at throne & liberty which was in developement for 10 years and has less areas than a wow expansion. I rather wish to get a polished mmo someday than then next pax dei or new world. Everyone who feels milked has more in issue with his fomo. It's nott that there is any reason to play these alpha stuff while there are coming hundreds of games every week.

If you don't want to pay to test early, then simply wait until release to buy, then you can be sure of what you're getting for your buck. From what I remember, there won't be a box cost either, just a monthly sub, so what's the rush? This is just an option for those that trust the project and want to support it early.

This game is going to peak with these alpha phase nonsense. By the time the game releases, everything about it will be online already, the hype is here now and will be gone by release. Nobody wants to watch something "about to release" for 4 years.

Here's the thing... You need money? Have a backer system. Thats it. Give out alpha and beta keys based on backer population by random. Have sever bashes where everyone can play. That way... All you pay for is game dev. Eventually all the backers will get a chance to test if they want, but thats all you pay for... Dev of the game.
i expected to be 60$-70$ price of regular game these days but tbh if there really is 100k+ a2 testers already thats alot and if they madee it 20$ there would be tons moree players that mean just eextra work with more servers and stuff like this soo i think 100$ is reasonable for ppl who actually wanna test and play it insted of buying and playing for 5 hours and never open game again

so you may be paying for kickstarter 150, then alpha for 3 phases 120 and then god knows what for the beta, and then a monthly sub once it launches, a normal kickstarter would get you alpha and beta access for free then game time once the game launched, you guys who are true fans are getting fucking shafted and anyone joining on launch saved a bunch of money, didnt even fund the development and start paying with a finished game starting at the same time as the fresh reset for all of the vets??? yea... no
These alpha keys have to be a joke.
There should be no price. This is supposed to be about getting bugs and other problems out of the game not 🤡 who just want to have fun in an unbalanced alpha. They should have selected 15,000 experienced testers. The people buying these aren't going to be taking testing seriously they're just going to get on and play around.
It's an obvious money grab and with 100,000+ people burrowing into every knook and cranny of this game for a year you can best believe that every class build, secret, or gold farm you could of found will already be in a guide on the internet. Have fun playing your secondhand MMO while the 100,000+ testers were the only ones to have a real fresh experience.

Bit of a bad faith statement there laddie. The $250 was for Alpha 2, Beta 1 & 2, some cosmetics and also around 6 months of a subscription to the game. It was also stressed multiple times by Steven and the team that you don't HAVE to buy it, it's an option to allow for people to support the project. It's very simple, if you don't want it.... Don't buy it....

If you buy phase one it will give you access to all of them. Margaret Explained it at one point in the stream.

I agree that the price is a little steep but its understandable in the context of the Kickstarter packages.
I think pricing is fair based on what we paid for Alpha 1 and Alpha 2 packages. If you don't like the pricing, don't buy it. Wait for release. Yes, had wished it would be persistence from the get go, but we'll just have to wait a little longer. I tested back in Alpha 1 and we had delays, so I'm not shocked with the initial delay and the possibility of delays as we work through development.

@@TheLegendaryBMyeah but my point is you don't have to pay this money NOW. You WANT to play the "game", it isn't a game yet it's an Alpha. This is how development used to be. Intrepid closed the sale of the keys last year but there was such a demand for it they re-opened them. The price is fair considering others have already paid 500/250 for keys, cosmetics, in-game currency and like 6 months subscription when the game launches. Also you need to factor in the length of the Alpha, it will likely run for 1-2 years so $120/24 months = $5 a month. Servers cost a lot to run. You need to understand what live service means. The price is to stop people from buying to "play the game early", it's not ready yet so wait or else if you believe in the project then pay it to support the development.
Remember the NDA gets lifted so you can just watch your favourite streamers play it and then provide your feedback in the forums for FREE.
I think its ok. Its a product. If people wants to pay it, let them pay. I mean, we have hundred of amazing complete games out there. But if people wants to pay to work for those guys for a game that doesnt exist. Lol.
