You're awesome. Gotta love how concise the AOE2 community is. If this were a Premiere Pro tutorial, it would be 6 minutes long, have a 30 second intro, and convey half as much information.
Great video, really helpful for reference. Reckon you could do "Effective X counter in AoE2 shown in 45 seconds or less"? Also "X civilisation in AoE2 shown in 45 seconds or less" that shows main strengths, weaknesses, and any change in standard build orders required would be cool!
Philosophically speaking, I've no idea! Economically speaking, deers give a significant food boost to your early economy. Deer luring is optimal on closed maps where you need not worry about scouting as much (such as Arena or Islands) and will also be of apt help to a food centered build order like a scout rush. Luring deers you're planning on eating either way will save you the wood expense of a mill as well as provide work safety to your villagers letting them collect food under the town centre.
@@Hjoerleif Ever since SpiritoftheLaw video I only mill deer if it's super convenient. Like if a bunch of them are in one spot, or next to boars or berries. Now I am getting into the habit of scouting the enemy base later on so I can lure the deer instead, but I usually only get two of 'em on a map like Arabia before the action starts.
@@xotl2780 it's always a tradeoff on an open map like Arabia, scouting information can be crucial and unless there's a good reason for luring deer I usually prioritise scouting so I can know better what to anticipate.
I think that the most important thing when push deer is avoid everything that isn't a TC. trees, houses, vills. Perhaps there is some algorithm for what the deer will do when you push it into a house but in my experience, there is no way to predict the outcome, other than that the deer will not go where you want it to.
Booting up the game to see if the follow trick actually works :O. would be crazy good if it did! Update: you can press follow, but it will stop pushing the deer whenthe scout touches it.
You have to repeat the command every push just like moving behind it otherwise. The benefit is you virtually always get the deer in a perfect direction forward whereas it's quite easy to put the deer off course when just right-clicking, causing more time to get the deer. You can try a couple of deer pushes either only with follow command or only with moving to compare and you'd probably notice you're typically spending less time compensating the deer running off in the wrong direction when you're using the follow command. But you should use whichever method you're most comfortable with!
This doesnt work. Why would you make this video. I got so excited I rushed to try it out. It doesnt work. He stops following when he touches the deer after 1 second. Im crying so hard I threw up on the carpet.
The scout will follow the deer only for one sprint. You have to repeat the command every sprint just like you'd have to repeat a regular move command. The benefit of the follow command is that the scout will position itself perfectly behind the deer so that the deer runs exactly straight from it whereas with regular move command there is a risk the deer will run off course. It's perfectly doable to just right-click but if you find yourself spending a lot of time trying to get the deer back on course it might be preferable to try follow command instead.
Woah I didn't know you could E-command the deer. I have always pushed the deer manually. Thumbs up!
blew my mind as well
If only all tutorials were so to the point and concise!

In 6 years of playing, I never tried auto following animals...
Thank you!
Following the deer towards the TC is something new that I learned in this video. I usually push the deer towards the TC using the scout.
I saw the videos by SOTL and T-West some days ago and got this recommended.
Using the follow button is a 200IQ move lol
While this video is 3 years ago, the knowledge is still very relevant to newer players. Thanks Hjorleif!
Best tutorial ever! 44sec and no sec longer. nice. take my sub :)

Now we know how to lure the deer. If only we knew why we were luring the deer...

You have to issue the follow command every push
@Hjörleif - Age of Empires 2 i am so stupid and silly. I tried this method and now. This works so flippin well. Lets gooooooooo!
Why is it when I press the follow button (not the hotkey) in DE the scout doesn't follow the deer?

Or do you mean that the hotkey works but clicking the follow button in the taskbar doesn't?
@@Hjoerleif The manual mouse click on the follow key doesn't work on deer.
@@whizzytheelephantadventure1063 Interesting, I just tried it out and for me it's the exact same behaviour whether I use hotkey or mouse click
@@Hjoerleif I do press follow then the deer, or the deer then follow?
worst guide ever man
How would you have liked it to be better?
