We find out why the town avoided Victorian Industrialisation and retains its beautiful Georgian character.
We follow the town trail which can be picked up at the local tourist information centre.
Used in many period dramas including pride and Prejudice and Middlemarch

Stamford looks like a quaint town, beautiful architecture, we can easily see why it would be featured in films. Looks like a great place to spend a day or two.

Our favourite town to visit, and is fairly local to us. The Friday market is great, just like all markets used to be, and especially at Christmas time. Really enjoyed your visit and thank you for sharing....Paul and Suzanne.

Now I haven't visited all towns in England but I have to say, what I've seen, I can see why you call this the finest stone town. How lovely. Liked the information about Dickens by the way. I've never heard of Stamford but it looked so lovely as you walked around the town trail. There is some beautiful architecture here and The 13th century St Marys church and the 15th century All Saints were both lovely. I can see why a lot of tv and film companies have used here and the town centre seems like it has a lot to offer with the ancient market place and a lot of coffee shops which is perfext ! 😃 Great informative tour as always both ~ Anna
Thank you Anna. Stamford is a really beautiful town it has such a lovely atmosphere with lots of lovely alleyways to explore. Burghley House is just outside the town as well. Its one of those places where you feel like it has not lost its identity and would have been the same if you visited a century ago apart from the cars replacing the horse drawn carriages. A splendid video in glorious weather. Interesting to learn that the Cecil family and others lobbed to have the railway directed away from the town. As you say, that must be one of the reasons why it is so well preserved - as well as the beautiful local stone, of course.

Stamford is a really beautiful market town. I love the grand Georgian buildings in that wonderful honeyed limestone. The railway was a near miss thankfully as other towns along the line grew instead. It is a place that has a quite unique character and is great to stroll around and enjoy such wonderful street scenes. Enjoyed taking a look with you. We will have to follow the town trail next time we visit. Best wishes to you both.

Again a great video and storyline showing the City’s exceptional buildings. We visited Stanford many years ago and can remember enjoying the experience and atmosphere on a market day. Hope to visit again while on a planned Rutland Water trip.

Thanks Graham yes the trails are a great way to get around and take in as much as you can. Rutland Water is a favourite place of ours to go for a walk we often visit there and also Barnsdale Gardens just up the road. Oakham is another lovely town. The Eleanor Cross in Stamford is not the original, there are only three of them left. There are still some interesting remains of the castle and town walls to see, also a priory just outside the town centre.
