8:19 "every piece is an experiment" This is what I do with my Tyranids. I call it a chameleon fleet; and I'm challenging myself to do a unique paint job on every single unit. Down to the spore mine, nothing will be duplicated. It keeps me excited to paint the same unit all day long.
As someone who is starting out in the hobby, but have an army of grey, this is such a sick idea. The T'au list I've been painting are based on Kintsugi. Lots of black with gold lining, but no models really look alike. They are all cobbled together from scavenged parts
I gave this a go. I'm probably considered an above average painter. Definitely not a high end painter. I can't help but think there is a fair bit of camera trickery going on here with perfect lighting. I spent an hour or so, mostly focusing on the front left leg and left hand and pauldron. Glazing back and forth between black and purple to smooth it all out. I can sort of see it, but it looks nothing like what your showing. edit: hhmm, maybe I made my initial purple area to big.
Timing is impeccable on this, I’ve been trying (and failing) to do NMM purple for ages!! 😅❤👍🏼
Hope it helps! 😁

Forgot to ask, but as a beginner: did you thin the paint alot, or did you go straight to the model since its primed in black?
Sure do. Thinning paint just helps to apply the paint smoothly. The primer is there to help the paint adhere to the model

Why does he look like Billy butcher but instead of genociding supes he just paints realy well
Looking at this video makes me think I can do it. I have a sternguard veteran waiting to be painted. Maybe he is the guinea pig
You 100% can! It might take a couple of tries but it's actually really simple
