I had oral surgery today and was feeling a little low, but finding a new S&S video made it all better!!! Told my wife Trip was planning our next adventure and I was excited. She asked me where we were going and I said no honey, me and TRIP'S adventure lol. One day I'll have a real one, but until then......
Hope the surgery went well and that you have a short recovery. Glad the video can make your day better. Ha! That's funny! Told that to my wife and she got a kick out of it. Make it happen! You won't regret it, you will only regret not doing it!
Hmmm, I actually tried to park there on two different occasions. I ended up walking in the hotel right across the street both times and he didn't mind me parking. I thought I saw signs that said no overnight parking. Maybe I was wrong. Seems like when I was doing my research they used to allow it but I think it changed.... Thanks for sharing info though!!!!
+Rob F I think I'm going to do the video on how to plan a river trip on the Peace River trip. Should be a great example and let everyone know about the trip as well.
Hello Tripp mr.kim here. Blems are generally a good deal. They're mechanically sound just a scratch or maybe a ding. these products are usually a real good deal
great video, you have helped me to get out and do this...,in my hobie outback ...lol. keep it coming. planing a solo run on a lake in CA soon. this helped a lot. thank you
Great video Trip! Yes Google Earth is a powerful tool. Use it all the time for mapping out potential campsites in an area I like to explore, then I transfer those coordinates to my Montana 600 (GPS). I like to just explore without a plan, but to have a number of good/near campsites is very handy if you see the weather is changing for the worst. Thanks for the video and stay awesome!
Great video. I learn a lot from you and others by just watching what you do on a trip. When I see the brand of gear, I can then research it to see if it may be something I want to invest in. I'm between kayaks right now so planning is about all I can do for a while.
Port St Joe area is such a beautiful place. Has tons of sea life to see. You should find some crabs and maybe even scallops for sure if in season. My grandparents had a house there right on the beach for years. Thanks for the video. You pointed out some great tips for planning. Looking forward to seeing your trip. Hoping to video one myself soon.
Unfortunately I'm missing scallop season, but I hope to find plenty of crabs. I'd love them for lunch and dinner..... Hope you get a chance to film on soon as well! Thanks for watching Joe as always!
good one Trip. I have been using Google Earth for a few yrs. and I do the same thing when it comes to planning a trip, weather it's kayaking or motorcycles. I grew up in Pensacola and live in Jacksonville now. been here for 30 yrs. Keep the videos coming.
Nice info. Have you done the oklawaha River yet. Took my grandson and son in law for a day canoe and kayak trip the weekend of the 10th. The river is great and a lot of nice scenery and wild life. You can start at top of Oklawaha (Harris Chain) and paddle to the Saint Johns river. I did the 10 miles from Rays Wayside park to Gores landing. Camped at Gores landing. Has Bath rooms but primitive camping. Highly recommend paddling this river. You even get to see the wild monkeys. The trip can be a 1night or 5 night plenty of primitive camping on the river. Plan on doing it all when I get a few days of warm weather
Nice video Trip, very useful!! In case you didn't know, you can also use Street View with Google Earth, you just have to drag the little orange guy from the right tool bar and drop it on the map, that way you don't have to switch to Google Maps :)
First of all great video. Secondly there is no replacement for knowing your area. I kayak my local rivers often and I can tell wether the river is passable or not just by driving by. I live in the north (Indiana) where rivers commonly flood or become congested with debris during heavy rain. The forecast can be helpful but always know what has happened in the past week so you don't get yourself in an unmanageable situation.
Thanks Brandy! You are right about knowing the area, although the only area I have known really that I've been to is Panama City. The rest of them I had to do my research and it worked well enough. Coming across log jambs can be tough. I've come across one that was massive and the river was flowing pretty darn good in that area so it could be a little dangerous. Fortunately the banks weren't very high in that section and I was able to pretty easily pull the kayak around. It certainly is possible to get it a tough situation quickly, but as long as your smart and safe about it, it's just part of the adventure lol
Trip, thanks for the video. awesome info. If you could do a video with more depth on how to use Google Earth that would be very helpful. thanks again Josh
Hey David! Is this the David I know? Have a buddy with your exact name. That would be a good trip. I'm thinking about doing a section of the Hooch this winter probably. Not sure when.....
Man I would love to go on a trip with you!!! I live in Florida and I love kayaking and camping. I just got into hammock camping and I haven't got to camp in it yet. I also fish a lot so I would be able to catch the fish for you. Lol.
Lol Happy to hear that. I'm planning a group trip in the future and inviting every subscriber... Maybe in Nov. or Dec.? I need someone to catch fish.... You'd be a asset lol
This works for motorcycle routes too :) Another thing to note is the year the satellite image was taken, usually as a watermark. You're looking at 2016 so everything you see should be contemporary. This will be helpful for bikers as far as gravel and road conditions as you use it for spotting landmarks and potential hazards. good video as always, keep em coming :D
I bet it would be exciting to be sitting there on the beach right about now lol. I'd love to head down that way... I've heard a lot of good things about it. I imagine I'll find myself down there eventually.
Can you do all this stuff on a iPhone. By the way just got a kayak for Christmas and I fell in love with it. like 4 years ago and I always looked at kayaking videos. I enjoy your videos so much they are so entertaining and help me understand what I need to prepare for.
Ummmm, I really don't know. I bet a lot of it is possible on an Ipad... I'm an Android user so I really wouldn't know. Congrats on the new yak! Glad you enjoy the videos, Get Out There!!!!
Hey Trip, We would always use google earth during planning of a mission, especially if we had to fly in to an unfamiliar area. Great stuff. Do you also plan around the tides? I'm not sure what the tide is like down where you are at but here it's around a 25 foot difference. It makes for a long walk up the beach if you come in at low tide. Our last trip after a long day of paddling, between two of us, we had to carry two tandems and a single a very long way. It was either that or wait for 4 hours haha.
Oh very cool Bob! The tides don here are probably 2' or so. Barely noticeable. Only thing I try to plan around the tides in my area is snorkeling lol Clearer water on an incoming tide... I could only imagine! Always an adventure huh?
Great vid! I would love to see how you go about river trips. I'm on the coast in SC and I usually just stick to saltwater. My yak is kinda long at 17 ft., but I would still like to take a shot at a river trip.
Glad you liked it William. I'll be working on a river trip planning video Monday hopefully. That and getting prepared for the next adventure at Cape San Blas. Mine is 16'6" and I don't have issues with windy rivers. It's kind of fun really. Most of the rivers aren't windy for very long anyhow.....
Hi Trip, great video. I have the same camera as you. I took a small trip with family recently and the battery ran low. For your trips, what do you pack as far as batteries and SD cards? I'm thinking enough to video a 2 day, one night trip for example.

I would say 3 full batteries should do you for a two day trip, at least that would fit my filming habits. SD cards, I have like a 32GB and 16GB I bring them both.

I think if your just getting into kayak fishing then it's a fantastic starter for sure or even several years. I have not used it but I'll give you my opinion since you asked ;) Will it work? Yes, absolutely. Is it a junky kayak? Nope, there are much worse out there. Could it be better? Sure it could, but it will still get you out there and that is what matter most. Are you talking what is my average speed or what is the average distance I paddle? Unfortunately, I don't know both of them for sure lol. The distance certainly varies and is up to you and your planning. Speed, on a touring yak you can estimate about 3mph paddling as and easy pace (less on a recreation or fishing yak). Then you have to consider if there is any current (with or against you), wind (can slow you down considerably) and waves. Lots of variables... If you are talking distance, I usually don't go much more that 20 miles in a given 3 day trip, often times less than that.
+SailingandSuch I was asking for distance. I mapped out a route around a lake by me and it was 16 miles. I know you do more down the rivers just wasn't sure what would be a good distance for a lake.
Just want to say thanks for inspiring me to buy a Kayak and go out on my own adventures. We have some pretty nice rivers here in the UK and next year there will be about six of us heading down the river Stour in Suffolk and camping out over night. It's going to be AWESOME!! Thanks Trip for all your videos and sharing your knowledge with us all.
Hi there. I've been watching your videos for a while now, and wanted to let you know you've been a source of inspiration as I take on various kayaking adventures. It's not only your helpful advice, but also your positive attitude and adventurous spirit that's helped me to focus on having fun. Keep it up, and if you get a chance check out my kayak blog! kgbutler.wordpress.com/category/kayak/
Hey Ken! Glad you enjoy the videos and found some inspiration from them! Got to have a good attitude right? ;) Just visited your blog. Nice Yak and Treo chair! Liza Jackson Park in Fort Walton Beach allows 24-hour parking, plenty of islands to camp on & fish- with trees.
Probably my favorite spot so far. When I was on those little island the water was so clear everywhere it was paradise....

Hello Tripp mr.kim here. Blems are generally a good deal. They're mechanically sound just a scratch or maybe a ding. these products are usually a real good deal

Thanks Ted! There is certainly a lot to learn here on UA-cam, that's for sure. Hope you find yourself a kayak soon!
Very informative ! I appreciate your hard work in making these videos and inspiring me to get out there, thanks and Keep The Passion High Bro !
Glad you thought it was helpful Metal. You're extremely welcome! Keep the Passion High, that's a good one, thanks!

Glad you found it useful Rico! Oh sweet!!!! Didn't know that one! Much appreciated. Thanks for chiming in with the great tips!
Awesome Awesome stuff!
Glad you think so Mark! Thanks for watching and commenting.
+SailingandSuch I'd still like to meet up with ya! The sub lake meet would be so cool.
so want to do something like this. you make it look so EZ
It is easy John, you can make it happen. You won't regret it, you will only regret not doing it.
First of all great video. Secondly there is no replacement for knowing your area. I kayak my local rivers often and I can tell wether the river is passable or not just by driving by. you inspered me to get my first kayak thank you so much aha I got a "pelican icon 100x angler."
Awesome Billy! Congrats on the first yak! Hope you get to put that bad boy to plenty of good use.
Thanks again Friend =) Very informative !!! *** cheers *** =D
You're welcome! * cheers *
The 3D feature in Google Maps Sattelite is really great except for some locations,,,where it looks likr everything is covered in ice.
I've tried the Google Maps 3d feature but I can't grow to like it. Doesn't do me much good... lol I always switch to Google Earth it seems.
Trip,
thanks for the video. awesome info. If you could do a video with more depth on how to use Google Earth that would be very helpful.
thanks again
Josh
Glad you found the video helpful. I am going to do just that. At least one more video, possibly two. You're very welcome Josh!
hey Tripp let do the Chattahoochee. start at 52 bridge and go to Florida Georgia line on 91 bridges.
Hey David! Is this the David I know? Have a buddy with your exact name. That would be a good trip. I'm thinking about doing a section of the Hooch this winter probably. Not sure when.....
+SailingandSuch I live in GA. I email you
Man I would love to go on a trip with you!!!
+SailingandSuch that would be awesome. I will keep a look out for details.
Good deal bud.
Good point about noting the date. I'll keep the camera rolling Jonny! Thanks for chiming in.
hey man, i went camping at anclote key in the tampa clearwater area. its really nice i think you should check it out.
I bet it would be exciting to be sitting there on the beach right about now lol. I'd love to head down that way... I've heard a lot of good things about it. I imagine I'll find myself down there eventually.
cool man stay safe with this hurricane
Will do!
They need a Google RiverView!!
I think they are actually working on that ;) Hoping I can get in on it when they need people to paddle
Hi Trip, great video. I have the same camera as you. I took a small trip with family recently and the battery ran low. For your trips, what do you pack as far as batteries and SD cards? I'm thinking enough to video a 2 day, one night trip for example.
Thanks Joe! I understand the battery issue. Videos suck it down. I usually carry about 4 spare batteries as well as a couple of portable battery banks to recharge the camera, my phone and headlamps. I would say 3 full batteries should do you for a two day trip, at least that would fit my filming habits. SD cards, I have like a 32GB and 16GB I bring them both.
Awesome, thanks for the help Trip.
Yes Sir!
I use VideoStudio X9 and Google Earth as well to plan trips and make videos. I'll be planning for a weekend mountain trip if I can get some programming done tonight. Do you have a fishing license for Florida and Alabama? There should be a federal fishing license or something that's good everywhere.
Same program I use, good one. Hope you're trip goes well! I do have both fishing licenses, a lifetime freshwater in Alabama and yearly in Fl. WOuld be nice to have one like you are saying though....
Hey Trip, I couldn't help but notice that you had a dive flag in your cabinet behind you. I was wondering if you are dive certified and where you like to dive if you are! Me and my dad like to go to a couple sunken ships in the Gulf of Mexico about 10-20 miles offshore!
Hey Mason! I am certified yes, got certified back in 2005 so it's been a while. Probably haven't dove since.... 2010 or so? I've dove off Panama City Beach numerous times and done some cave diving (going farther than we should have to many times, young and dumb.....) Great hobby!
Yeah my schedule consists of school, football, and diving on the weekends!
Not to bad of a schedule!!!
Haha yep. Now I just have to fit in some time for work so I can get some money!
I hear ya bud. It'll come, don't rush it, trust me ;)
My friend and I have identical 12 foot sun dolphin arubas. I already know they are beginner kayaks, but do you think they would be river worthy for something like the Wabash River in Indiana. We have done mostly lake paddling, but the Wabash isn't terribly rough. Advice?
You will probably be just fine as long as your not going through any class III rapids or something. One thing to keep in mind if you are hauling a lot of gear is to keep the weight low. If you strap a bunch of heavy stuff on your deck you are greatly increasing your risk of flipping over. Heavy stuff on the bottom.....
when is the psj video gonna be out
Ummmm, here in the next hour or so ;) Would have been a couple hours ago but I had to do some work on it for some copyright issues....
what do you think about the heritage angler 12'?
I think if your just getting into kayak fishing then it's a fantastic starter for sure or even several years. I have not used it but I'll give you my opinion since you asked ;) Will it work? Yes, absolutely. Is it a junky kayak? Nope, there are much worse out there. Could it be better? Sure it could, but it will still get you out there and that is what matter most.
If that is what you budget will allow then go for it. If your budget may be a little more then I might try for a Tarpon 120 or something. It's going to cost you a bit more money but you get some important upgrades like a more comfortable seat (which I read in the reviews at Academy's website isn't the best seat being a little uncomfortable and you can be sitting in water all day as well). The Tarpon also has other creature comforts like better storage, T-tracks for attaching gear, a better paddle holder and more. Link to the Tarpon - www.wildernesssystems.com/us/products/tarpon-120-angler
My in your situation, I'd be looking on Craigslist for a used Tarpon or something similar for the same price as a new Angle 12 ;) Check out my video on buying smart when it comes to kayaks - ua-cam.com/video/JhmNyXY9y7M/v-deo.html
SailingandSuch thanks very much...I'll wait a little longer and try to up my budget for the tarpon.
Sounds good, hope you like that bad boy! Wish I had one lol
What is your average mileage when you do a paddle trip on the coast?
Gotcha. I don't know my average. 16 miles shouldn't be to bad for a day around lake. 2 days and it will be easy in a touring yak. Have fun!!!!
Just want to say thanks for inspiring me to buy a Kayak and go out on my own adventures. We have some pretty nice rivers here in the UK and next year there will be about six of us heading down the river Stour in Suffolk and camping out over night. It's going to be AWESOME!! Awesome King! Glad you got yourself a yak and are getting ready for some adventure! You're very welcome, glad you enjoy the videos. Have fun!!!
Hi there. I've been watching your videos for a while now, and wanted to let you know you've been a source of inspiration as I take on various kayaking adventures. Just visited your blog. Nice Yak and Treo chair! I don't have time at the moment to read it but I added it to my favorites so I can come back to it. Thanks for sharing and have fun on that nice yak!
