I did this last year. I’m 34 though 😅. I spent 6 months learning the theory and software and created a portfolio, applied for a handful of jobs and ended up getting offered the first one I interviewed for. Best decision I’ve made.
that's awesome!! I've been trying to land a UX job for almost 2 years now with no luck :( I have a portfolio and everything. what kind of projects do you have on yours?
@@Anna-nc5xd thank you for your input, It's always uplifting to read a success story. I am taking some skill share classes on UX and working on a project, Am happy to have stumbled across your portfolio.
@@KuozyMusic Thank you :) I think with UX it is dangled as almost a golden carrot, a career that you don't necessarily need a formal education in that still gets you high salary, almost too good to be true. However it kinda is true! there IS a big demand for UX specialists. Its not easy though, you need to have many hats to approach the problem from different angles. I think though that most of the skills required are to do with soft skills, so how you approach things generally will tell you if you will do well in that field. I love that its so varied, one day im writing a research report then the next im designing wire frames or style guides. Its a great mix. It was a gamble for sure but for me it certainly paid off. I now have moments, sat at my desk, where i literally say out loud "i love my job" and that is the best feeling in the world!
2 years ago I quit my job to become a front end developer (self-taught). Never regretted it, Now I'm 26 & a developer/tester. Never lose hope & all the best!
Hey Ash, this is such a sincere post. And by the amount of likes it has, it resonates with other viewers as well. Thank you so much for taking the time to share these encouraging words with me. It means a whole lot :')
@@TJstarstruck Hi Thomas, You are in the right path. Now its better that you do some projects, Using the skills you learnt. I was stuck in "tutorial hell" in the beginning. For beginners now a days its good to have (HTML, CSS, JS (Any one JavaScript framework), Any one backend language (If you're going for Fullstack, Practice APIs since most companies use that now a days. I would not suggest you to quit the job & pursue, In case if you did then that's fine. Networking is very important build connections, Interact with developers, recruiters, managers so that when time comes they would have a recommendation for you. All the best!
What she said about being children of immigrant parents is so true. I also found I personally put so much pressure on myself to be successful to honor my parent's sacrifice, when all they really want is for me to be happy. I recently lost my job and felt like a failure and my dad literally does not care if I am unemployed, he told me to just be happy and enjoy the break, the work will come and when it does you will go back to working and be amazing at it. 30+ years to come to this simple realization.
Don't worry we Asians are blessed with great parents. Don't be disappointed you will definitely find a new job, just consider this as a break. All the best & stay happy. Best will come to you in no time.
wow, tysm for sharing this. it resonates so much with me. first, let me say that your dad is amazing for vocalizing that with you. I haven’t reached that level of words of affirmation with my mom yet since she doesn’t express love through words, mostly food and service haha. but this is such a strong reminder. thank you so much again for sharing. we can all use some more kindness for ourselves and feel appreciation not indebtedness to our parents. and that is a wholeeeee process
@@LizziKieu You're welcome. He is not perfect, but when things get tough he has always surprised me. That was when I realized I need to give him a chance. Good luck.
I’m only a minute in and omg are we the same person?? Quarter life crisis is a REAL thing. I’m currently learning UX design while at my 9-5. Although I have a degree in Computer Science I notice that this is the field I’m passionate about!
lmaooo omg it is SO REAL. the crazy thing js when it happened, I didn’t process it as my quarter life crisis. But yeah dude, soooo wild. Cudos to you for juggling both your full-time and learning rn. I bet it’s challenging so I admire that. Best of luck on pursuing that passion! it’s great bc not everyone has found their passion yet. ty again for taking time to drop love 🥺✨
Lool, I just turned 26 and I’m thinking to change my path and study computer science (I’m historian). Quarter life crisis is real. I feel kinda desperate because I really want a change. Something that let me work remotely, you know.
Currently in school for Info Technology and I’m passionate about UX Design/Brand Design trying to see if I can merge it together especially with web design with brands.
As a 23 year old with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology I am also beginning my transition into UXD. Wishing you the best of luck, and hopefully we both reach our goals!
hey, thanks for sharing that! super exciting! I hope you know you’re not alone in the process. feel free to also join this network of self learners and junior designers I made via discord! It’s a nice support and resource group when you need it :) discord.com/invite/dXvMsXGY best of luck!!
Hey Peter! I’m a psych major as well about to graduate and am considering a career in UI design. If you’re willing, would you be free this week for a quick chat?
@@simplyaizhan oh really! how so? I'm 24 and graduated in psychology almost 4 years ago. I think I'd be great at UX but I'd honestly just be doing it to attain a high paid job. My parents are immigrants too so its the very least I could do
@@simplyshama Hi! I'm not the person you asked/responded to, but I am currently an Interaction Design student so I thought I would throw in my two cents. Interaction Design/User Experience Design/whatever you want to call it (everyone has a different term it seems) is sort of a big amalgamation of several different fields - visual design, graphic design, anthropology, marketing, technical writing, some coding experience can benefit you, sociology, and of course psychology (and probably more!). I have an associate's in psychology, as well as an innate interest in psychology, that I feel has benefited me in my degree. A lot of people look at UXD and assume that you're just creating interfaces and making things look pretty. That's really only a small part of what you do, though. I would argue that in UXD, research and analysis have greater weight. Essentially, you are tackling how people interact with your product, and even more importantly, WHO is interacting with your product. You do literature reviews, competitive audits, and user research to determine what your user actually needs and who your user actually is, and you build a persona(s) (basically a concrete idea of a fictional user) to work off of. Bringing it back to psychology, a large part of UXD is understanding how your user thinks. You have to break away from the mindset of a creator and put yourself into the role of your user. UXD is largely a study of human behavior (in some areas it is still call "Human-Computer Interaction" or something similar). So if you have a better understanding of how people operate, how they behave, and what motivates them, you already have a leg up on everyone else. Additionally, jobs that fall under the UXD category vary wildly. You may being doing something that only involves the research and analysis stages, and may never end up actually designing anything. You might go as far as wireframing, but maybe your job has a separate User Interface department that handles the final design and prototyping. Maybe you only do usability testing, which involves a lot of research and participant testing but nothing to do with design whatsoever. Or maybe you are asked to do it all, from the research, to the design, to the testing, and maybe even some coding. But no matter what position you're in or what task you're given, that psychology experience will help you tremendously.
I can't believe that I read all 275+ comments all the way to the first comment. I feel so energized knowing I'm not alone on this transformational self learning journey into the world of UX. Thanks Lizzi for sharing 💙
I can’t believe you did either!! haha. your comment pointed out something so special, which is the community of people here that are feeling similar things. it’s so easy to feel alone in this self learning process but just know that you’re not alone. and that YOU GOT THIS!! rooting for you :) remember that there’s power in everyone’s story. and only you can tell yours best.
Yoo thanks for sharing. It’s so comforting to hear others on the same wave. I appreciate you dropping a comment! Means a lot, hope to hear from you again!!
I quit my 6+ year job a week ago due to it not being creative enough, and ever since I have been freaking out. I hate the insecurity. But after watching your encouraging video, I know I'm not alone, and will keep working towards my creative careers (UX/UI)!
thank you for sharing! and yes, you’re not alone. feel free to join my discord server to connect with me and other folks on their UXD journeys as a resource and support network. link is in the bio!
I'm doing the Cousera 6 month course in UX Design. 4 weeks in. It's really good and very in depth, and sponsored by Google. Not expensive. $40/month. I highly recommend it. Thanks for your videos. 😊
@@courtneyragin2038 I quit the course when I had to round up several people for interviews on the business idea that I had. I live in a rural area and not easy to find people. I didn't realize that this line of work had such human interaction. I wanted something without that. So back to working with kids 😅
@@alipainting You could have done the interviews remotely. A lot better than doing them in person. Twitter was a good place for me to find testers. I am sorry that the interactions turned you away, but I hope that you can get back to it soon. Don't give up!

Brooo, listen. This is my first *uploaded* video. The video and audio quality is is trash because I recorded 4-5x on my dslr before I raged quit and was like, I'm just going to do one last take on my iphone. Then I spent 18 hrs (no joke) of editing and learning to edit videos on this one haha. It was tryingggg me. At one point, I wanted to chuck my laptop out my window. lmao BUT! This is a highly specific video that was recommended for me lol I too am about to turn 25 and having some what of a crisis. The combination of the pandemic, the milestone of turning 25, and the loss of a loved one have me questioning why I'm not pursuing my passions. Life is short! Hi Lizzie! My name is Van and I’m also transitioning into a UX career. I’m an international student from Vietnam and will soon become a Vietnamese immigrant here in the US. So glad I found your channel that makes me feel like I found a companion in this journey of becoming a UX designer. Wish you will soon land your dream UX job!
I'm also 25 now and in the process of changing my career into UXD. I'm a little scared to quit my current job, but your video helped me to understand that it will be okay, I can do that too. All the best for your journey.❤️😀
Finding this video means really much to me. I've watched a silly amount of videos on UA-cam about UX Design and almost every person behind them went to a bootcamp or has a degree of some sort. Financially speaking, I'm not able to give 10k+$ for a bootcamp since I'm still in high school and because of that, I can't devote my time on it as much as I should so I would just waste that money. However, I'm going through a career crisis (a bit early for that isn't it) but every cell of my being knows that I should be doing UXD - and the sooner I start, the better. Anyway, this is becoming way too long... but yeah, thanks for doing this, I subscribed to you immediately and will watch the rest of your videos. Excited to share this journey with someone :)
Hey, this was just a sincere post. Thank you for sharing. It's funny b/c you kind of remind me of myself when I was in high school. I was over-planning my career and already worrying about colleges when I was a freshman. So let me say that from what you're telling me, you have a good head on your shoulders. It sounds like you're responsible in thinking about your future and also about your finances. So congratulations on that. I'd encourage you to explore UX Design at your own pace. Don't be too hard on yourself if you have a lot going on. Sometimes what happens when we put too much stress into something is, it then becomes less fun and enjoyable. So, continue to explore UXD via youtube videos, you should definitely check out free UXD 101 webinars hosted by a lot of bootcamps now a days (eg. General Assembly is constantly hosting a wide range). And dabble in design software in your free time (eg. Figma and Sketch). I'm amazed that you're planning ahead this young. I admire that. Keep on going and please keep me posted via the comments in my future videos. I'll definitely remember your screen name and look out for it! Take good care :)
So happy to see someone learning UXD like me! I quit my job as well. I have a design background but recently decided to focus and self teach myself UXD. I’m in the process of learning the tools as well as creating my first design 🥺
going off of your "3:20 - Identifying my skill sets & career values " section, i really realized that you need strong self knowledge to figure out what you are good at and what you want and what will align with it. it's a lot of work and effort!
Thanks so much for sharing so much of yourself and your process, Lizzi! I'm also in the process of becoming a self-taught UX designer and currently taking a couple different online courses. Wishing you all the best, and I'm excited to see you grow!
Ah, thank you so much for sharing this with me. It really brings me immense comfort hearing from other self-taught designers. I appreciate you taking the time. I wish you all the best on your journey as well! May I ask what online courses you're taking and what your experience has been like? thanks in advance!
Wow! Rodrigo, this is such a pleasant surprise!! It’s so bizarre that this video reached you haha. Thanks so much for watching and leaving me this comment. Chat with you very soon!! :)
I'm also a first gen, and I always feel so bad complaining about my job to them. Like, they went through so much for me, and I'm complaining? I hated my uni experience too, but at least I finished. And now I'm so depressed from not being unable to travel full time anymore lol. Sometimes I feel so guilty, but honestly just me being able to make the choice to switch career paths and go back to school is a privilege, and I'm super grateful for that. The sacrifice they made was not made in vain! I will become a UX designer, be location independent, and live all over the world. Speaking it into existence!
you WILL become a UX designer!! I can tell from what you’ve shared that you’re someone with conviction and a big heart. That’s going to take you far and land you a UX job!! ty for sharing. the journey is hard but pls be reminded that you’re not struggling on this UX bus alone 🥺✨

Truly inspiring! I’ve been contemplating entering in the UX/UI design field. Reading countless articles & watching videos just to gain more & more knowledge on the field. I’m just stuck at where to begin
The youtube algorithm is kinda wild today. I am actually thinking of getting into ui/ux and am in the exact same situation as you were in (before quitting job). Really looking forward to your series. Might be the push I need to go into uncertainty :)
Yoooo that is so wild. Thank you for taking the time to share this w me! It makes me so happy esp. b/c I think what helped me take the full plunge to quit my job and dive into this new career was seeing relatable people talk about their experiences of doing it. I'm currently digging into UX design. I am warehouse/production worker (23 yo from Poland working in Netherlands) and i just can't handle how boring this job is. That's not how i want to spend the rest of my life. For now i just research so much stuff, watching yt videos and learning about design like i never before. As 13-16 yo i used to do some work with Photoshop, i always liked editing and creating new graphics for people, so that i found out month ago what this job is I just fell in love

I got goosebumps while listening to your story because it is so similar to mine, I quit my job because I thought it is not fair to do both self-learning and working, and I was also in a stable environment but I asked myself this: will I want to do the same thing five years from now? do I want to be like my leader in the team? and the answer was a FAT NO and that's what got me here
hahahhaha “FAT NO”. omg yes so relatable. I really hope you find something that naturally excites you and makes you say HELL YES to a 5 yr commitment and even leadership role!!
I'm a Music Composer/Producer trying to have a parallel career. Currently self learning and diving deep into the world of UX. All the best to you! I'm 36 and I'd like to believe that age doesn't matter to make a career switch if you feel strongly about it.
Wow it is so crazy that UA-cam recommended me this video! I am a senior in Highschool considering a major in UX or Graphic design and eventually landing a job in UX. I look forward to watching more of your videos, and good luck with your own journey!
Hey, thank you for taking the time to share this with me. That's awesome that you're already thinking ahead to exploring a career in UX or graphic design! Best of luck to ya! :)
Yo, this was amazing. Thank you so much for making this video, it was honestly one of the best UX-related videos I've watched and I couldn't be happier finding it in my recommendations. I'm currently going through the same experience you're going through and can relate to a lot of what you said in the video. Hearing your story and seeing how you were able to make the choice of leaving a job to pursue something that you love is such an inspiration and definitely reminded me of how important it is to be happy with what you do. Thank you for sharing your experience and for being the person you are. Looking forward to more content from you :)
Yooo, what the heck your comment is so genuine. Wow, thank you so much for this. It is very heart-warming that (1) you took the time to write a thoughtful comment and (2) you shared with my that you relate to a lot of what I shared in the video. It's a very perplexing feeling with the rise of the pandemic but also having to consider all the adult responsibilities yet the notion of being happiness seems simple. I'm glad that this video sparked inspiration for you and served as a reminder to be happy with what you do. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts and reaction from watching this video. It really means a lot to me. Looking forward to hearing from you again in the comments of my future videos! Take good care :)
Omg. I had the same problem. I am a programmer looking at my bachelor degree. But any job I tried in 4 years couldn't give me the need of being creative and communicating with people. But I came across UX&UI and I fell in love😍. So totally understand you. Keep up with the good work🤟
I'm a month into self-learning UX research after quitting academia. This is a great video to document your journey...happy to have found this. All the best!
Thank you kindly for sharing your story! I graduated last year into the pandemic with a degree geared towards themed exepriences-think theme park design. My offer with Disney fell through because of the pandemic, I tried a grad school for that track that was a nightmare, then pivoted to teaching fitness. While the money is fine and I don't hate it, I can tell it's not "IT". I'm often told that a job is a job and that's what hobbies are for, but I genuinely want to feel lit up by work, even with it's obvious worklike traits. While I know every job has it's less fun parts, I feel like I too want to commit the thiccest part of my life to something that feels worth doing. I've been thinking about UX a lot since it is so closely related to themed experiences. There's actually a TON of UX involved with themed experience so I'm really excited and hopeful that I can build on my current skills and acquire new ones! I'm so happy I found your channel and I wish you the best if you haven't already found your way!
Hi lizzi! Thanks for this video, its really well made! I'm in the same position as you, having left my full-time job as a graphic designer a few months ago to commit full time for ux design. since then I've learned a lot in the journey of what to do and what NOT to do 😅. thanks for motivating words and hope we can connect in the future. cheers!
Hey! Thanks so much for the love, man. I appreciate you sharing your story. I'm finding it so empowering to connect with other folks that are taking this unconventional path to kickstart their UXD career. Yo, I HEAR you. I'm currently on the same boat! First-gen immigrant child and value financial security but looking for something that I love doing. I studied communications (specialization in visual design) but I wanted more ways to churn my creativity. I did (and still) work at odd jobs here and there, and definitely found out through my jobs that I like to try and find solutions that work for the business and the consumers/customers. I've heard about UX back in college but they didn't teach that in school, but the more I dug, the more interested I've become. I'm in the beginning process of self-study and would love to hear more of your journey :)
Ahhh, oh my goodness. Thank you for sharing your journey with me. It sounds like we went through a very similar career revelation! Also, I LOVE connecting with fellow self-learners. I'm not sure about you, but it sometimes feels lonely. Most of time, it doesn't because I'm so busy and am constantly checking in with my mentors -- haha. I'd love to hear how your journey goes, so pls continue to update me :)
How was this recommended to me 11 months later?! LOL But I’m also 25 and have been in this crazy quarter life crisis. It’s no joke LOL I’ve been looking into UXD for about 2 years but have always put excuses in front of it. Also the financial instability is frightening for that time frame of learning and searching for a job, but everyone always says the outcome is far more worth it. It’s truly so hard believe when you don’t know when you’ll get there! I’m just shocked how so much life has flown by and I’m still “thinking” about it. Your video honestly came at the right time bc you laid out a logical pathway way to help me figure out my why. A why strong enough for me! I need to find that and I thank you for sharing your thoughts process! Can you also share what podcasts, webinars and extra material you listened to or read to immerse yourself into what UX is? :)
So happy you brought up the fact that you're a first-gen. It changes SO much and impacts every little decision we make-- from career to love. Koodos to you for mustering up the courage to do what you love. It's such a difficult decision to make, especially for firstgens.
I cannot thank you enough for this. I`ve been working with software development, and was feeling extremely unfulfilled because I wasn`t grasping the concepts well enough to keep up with everything. I then discovered UXD after realizing as well that I wasn't really able to be creative. Fortunately I`ve had the opportunity to be able to communicate with designers to kind of help me along, but I feel like self teaching is a path I'm probably going to take, and it will be really interesting to see how your journey goes!
I just graduated with a degree in Computer Science and I have had a bit of interest but never chased it. I am chasing it now because I just know if this was my career I would love it a whole lot more than most of the things I could get into. Thank you for this video
congrats on graduating with a C.S. degree! It takes a lot of hard work, intellect, and grit to pursue that degree. Life is far too short to not explore opportunities that you may love and be really good at. I’m rooting for you!!
I’ve been considering about switching career into UX design or Product design as well!! Thanks for sharing the video and it feels good to know that I’m not alone
Heyhey Daisy, thank you for taking the time to share this w me! This video is wholesome. As a Political Science graduate, I really resonated with the urge to attain creative agency. I am currently a UX design intern and this video is everything. Subscribed, you are amazing, have a good one.
I don't know why the algorithm recommend this to me, but damn I needed this. I accidentally got into UI/UX design when i wanted to make an app for a small business. Now I'm seriously considering this as a career option. . Reading the comments below, it seems like a lot of people are in the same boat. Can you make an informal online community where we can talk about UX design?
Hey, thank you so much for sharing your story. It's mad funny to me that the youtube algorithm is tossing this video randomly on people's newsfeed haha but I'm glad because I get to connect with folks also interested in UXD! That is such a great idea. Tbh, I've been thinking about potentially hosting a ClubHouse event and I can facilitate a Q&A with anyone that wants to join and discuss/learn. Half-baked thought... Anyways in the meantime, if you haven't joined the Design Buddies Discord yet, I highly recommend it! www.designbuddies.community/ It's a formal and informal community of UX Designers (mostly new designers). I hope this helps and again I appreciate your time and commenting. I hope to hear from you again in the comments of my future vidz! Later :)
Send you my love from Vietnam~ I'm 1 year younger than you, and I'm putting my very first step into UX world. Still very confused about what to do next. Then I came across your video, oddly enough, everything suddenly became so clear to me. Thank u!
As a student in international business literally bc it sounded cool and i didnt know what else to do fresh out of highschool (i would've studied art but i also don't feel the best abt my skills or the job opportunities down that line), and especially as a student with adhd I feel a lot of imposter syndrome, and just don't feel like my major is the best fit. I've been looking into UX Design because it combines what I love in art/design with what i like about business. It really just feels like something I should do and I am so excited to hear more and more about it, and seeing so much opportunity to switch to it!
Haha I have the same career path. I graduated with Intb and enjoyed what I learned but my heart wasn't in it. Self learning UXD on my own at a slower pace. UXD can always take you back to business. I did some info interviews and some generalists were moving towards business/ service design

Thanks so much for sharing this🤗 there really aren't people documenting their self-learning process. It's refreshing to relate & reference to someone else going through this journey.
hey, I really appreciate this comment! Especially b/c it's specific to my intention of documenting my self-learning process in real time. Thanks so much for your time to write this comment. It means a lot to me. I hope you find my future videos documenting my journey helpful and enjoyable to you :) Take good care!
OMG! I'm also 25, first generation in North America, graduated in Political Science, and am pivoting to design/ux hahah. I'm currently a designer at SAP, but entirely self-taught throughout the years and self learning UX and prototyping etc. all by myself. Let me know if you ever wanna connect
@@kadeshascott8152 i got lucky that the company I work for now values proof of your skills and proficiency and doesn’t just use education as a measure of how skilled you are. I think a lot of designers would feel this, but recruiters might not, and they might be the ultimate gatekeeper if they don’t understand how a self-taught designer can bring just as much skill and sometimes even more perspective and empathy than a designer who followed a super linear path. I got lucky and referred into being a Product Designer Consultant at a global firm now. I think I have my soft skills to thank for it :)
My UX/UI design bootcamp starts at the end of August and even though Ive been kicking myself for making such a drastic career change I am so ready to learn UXD!!
I have similar journey as you. Quit my digital marketing job and do full time learning in uiux. It's quite scary especially knowing that my financial state isn't stable. However, i do believe that with all the hardwork and effort could lead into something better in my career fulfillment.
I am going through this process now myself! I just applied to a boot camp and will quit my job once I get confirmation. We should create a support group!
I just talked to my mom about how I no longer want to be a nurse, (it was really an indirect expectation, but she doesn't understand that) and I told her that I want to do something with marketing, web design, or computer science. We looked and I stumbled into UX design, so I'm trying to navigate this decision.
@@sleepy.thehuman this is awesome, take your time to learn more about UX and identify your skill sets and experiences to make the pivot! i’m rooting for you!
Love this! Great perspective I think that’s what many of us have gone through! I’m still learning and growing in user experience design but I can definitively say this. This is one of the most supportive communities on earth. And if you really want it. You can make it happen. Just gotta be consistent.
Chào chị! em là người Việt và cũng đang thay đổi sự nghiệp Y sinh sang UI/UX từ tuần trước, và me rất đồng cảm với chia sẻ của chị. Chị rất truyền cảm hứng và đam mê về mảng này. As a Vietnamese and also changed my entire career path of biomedical to UI/UX design just last week, I'm too emotionally invested in your talk. You are very inspiring and passionate about the job. This is exactly what I've been looking for, thank you for deciding to make these videos! Please share with us the videos/articles/podcasts that you have been using to learn UXD and ones you have found helpful. I recently graduated college with a degree in Industrial Design and I thought I wanted to be a product designer, but recently realized that I would enjoy UX design way more and I've been trying to learn more about it. Industrial Design/ Product Design are similar to UX Design in a lot of ways since they focus on understanding users, conducting research, and prototyping and iterating. My biggest struggle has been creating a correct portfolio since this was something I was not taught in school, and everyone said that the portfolio is the most crucial part in landing a UX job. I realized that I don't have many UX projects to show since I mainly did physical product design projects as a students, so I've been feeling very stuck and searching to find someone starting from scratch and self learning so I can learn from them. Again thank you for your videos and I look forward to seeing more of your content!
hey thanks for sharing this! it’s super hard get started as a self-learner. I feel you on the portfolio, i’m building mine now and it’s tough for sure! feel free to also join this network of self learners and junior designers I made via discord! It’s a nice support group with A LOT of resources I use. discord.com/invite/dXvMsXGY
Finished my B.S In Nursing 11 years ago, worked for a bit, after 3 years I took Architectural Technologist(2 years program) -been working in that industry for almost 5 years now, and 2 months ago I’ve decided to learn UX design on the side, and hopefully to be my new career in the near future! 🙌🏽
I've just graduated and decided to take a gap year to change my major, also self-taught. I have to say that it's such a risky decision for me because at some parts, I feel like I don't trust my discipline and ability to make it. The peer pressure and social pressure about the career of freshers is huge. Time might totally be a waste which makes me feel scared. Self-study is tough and lonely sometimes, but I know I'm not alone and we are all putting effort to make this risk become a great opportunity in the future. Thank you, sis Lizzi
Hey! In the current same position with graduating. It definitely is a risk between starting off in a career relating to my degree vs. investing my time and energy into building with UX. How’s it going for you so far?
Rất thích cách suy nghĩ của bạn ở đoạn cuối: Muốn document cái hành trình của bản thân, và mong là nó giúp được ÍT NHẤT là 1 người thôi cũng được. I'm thinking about what to study in uni abroad - in Germany and am considering UX design. Thanks for your vid. Wouldn't expect this content from a Vietnamese during my research. Hope you understand my comment above! Best wishes!
Definitely considering it and I agree that a bootcamp may not be the way to go. I really enjoyed this video and am really looking forward to your next one!
Hey, thanks so much for showing some love and sharing your thoughts on bootcamps with me! I'm planning on dedicating an entire video of my decision to withdraw from the bootcamp I was initially enrolled in. Are you newly breaking into UX space from a different career or education concentration as well?
Whoa I'm glad I found this channel. I've been busting my head on how to start UX with the background I have and how others did it too. Luckily we have the same background even the degree and experience I have and I've been wondering about career change too. Will be tuning in for more of your videos!! :D :D Good luck!
While pursuing my apparel design degree, I recently got to know about UXD and have been continuously familiarizing myself with the concepts of it for the past 3 months. I've taken a free visual design course while working on my graduation project with a good company but like you said, have it in my "gut" to pursue this field instead. I'm glad to have stubbled across this video to continue my drive and hopefully apply for higher studies for the same. Thank you Lizzi, for reminding me it's never too late! Would love to join your discord channel however, the invite doesn't seem to work atm :(
I’ve literally just finished my degree (majoring in political science too lol) and now want to do UX and self teaching hahahha. Must be something in the air...

Omg this really makes me feel less alone! I’m 26 currently work for apple as a image editor. I’ve been wanting to move into UX for 2 year now, I just haven’t made a move yet. I think I’m ready now.
Hi Lizzi - really appreciated hearing the perspectives shared here! in need of a more creative career, which is different from past generation that a stable job should essentially be enough). Helps to validate the current thoughts in my head :)

What tools are you learning?
going off of your "3:20 - Identifying my skill sets & career values
" section, i really realized that you need strong self knowledge to figure out what you are good at and what you want and what will align with it. it's a lot of work and effort!
I totally agree! self-awareness is so big in personal AND professional growth!
It looks like UA-cam algorithm knew I wanted to watch this video and suggested it to me. 😂👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I loved it! So proud of you!

So in a way, I was in your shoes... and that is wild to me.

I'm currently digging into UX design. I am warehouse/production worker (23 yo from Poland working in Netherlands) and i just can't handle how boring this job is. That's not how i want to spend the rest of my life. For now i just research so much stuff, watching yt videos and learning about design like i never before.

Keep up with the good work🤟
ahhh so glad you felt similar sentiments about the lack of creativity. thanks for sharing!
I'm a month into self-learning UX research after quitting academia. This is a great video to document your journey...happy to have found this. All the best!
This was so well-made I thought you had at least 100K subscribers. Keep it up.
haha! that’s so flattering to hear and definitely motivates me to keep making quality content like this. thank you for sharing!!

It's such a difficult decision to make, especially for firstgens.
ahh so glad you caught that. omg YES. the nuances of being first-gen brings so many nuances. I still feel it everyday now
I cannot thank you enough for this.

I did some info interviews and some generalists were moving towards business/ service design

i loved when u talked about how even though work doesn't define you, it is still a big part of your life, so it's important to be picky about it and not just work for the sake of comfort since you will inevitably feel uncomfortable for the rest of your life thinking about the what-if's

Such a great video, you explained your experience so well that I could reflect about my own life and dreams🥺🥰
ahhh thank you for sharing this 🥺 good luck w your life and dreams and continue to reflect ✨
Honestly! It's all an emotional video for me too. Thanks Lizzi for sharing.
Hey Gaudy, thanks for sharing this. Oh my goodness, that's such a coincidence. You're probably the 5th person to tell me that they're switching from a poli sci major! There's def. something in the air or the water or somethingggg. haha thanks again for leaving this comment, it made me giggle
Ahhh ty for sharing this, Dharin. I’m glad this provided some validation for you. I remember even getting an ounce of it when I first considered a career change meant the world to me.
Ty again for sharing!!
Thanks for sharing your insights!
This is really inspiring. Best of luck on your journey
hey this means a lot. thank you!!
Inspiring! Thank you and good luck!
You did this the smart way unlike me. Actually took an informed decision. I just said yee haw and dived into ui/ux haha xD
How did it turn out?
@@chiammin410 well I freelanced as a ui/ux designer for a year or two and imo it went well for me. I never took a job cus I was too lazy to make a portfolio and explain my process n everythin so I'm still continuing to freelance on the side and build my own thing :)
im 35 and finding myself headed towards a career change.. i feel so old and out of place. I too am learning Ux Design... hope its not too late for me.
It is never too late. Never! 🧡
Not late!!
My mom went back to college at 44 and when people said to her "But that means by the time you graduate, you'll be 48 or 50", she responded "well if I don't go, in a few years I'll still be 48 or 50, so I might as well".
@@YourMajesty143 That's awesome!!
@Sony Maharjan That's awesome! I would love that. :)
I just stumbled upon your channel and I’m so excited to follow your journey!!
wait Esther have we connected on another social media platform?? I recognize your name but it may be deja vu :( anywho, tysm for sharing this w me!!! 🥺💝
Thank you for the inspiration lizzi! Awesome communication skills!
thank you so much for this video. my parents are also "Vietnamese boat people" and i share that common "happy career" vibe you mentioned, I'm career changing from political science at ucla, and definitely feeling like i need to immerse myself into UX/UI design better. why do i feel like the algorithm in YT recommended is becoming scary accurate? haha. i look forward to your next videos! 💜
hahhaa omg you’re not the only one that has said that about the YT algorithm. I love that somehow you stumbled across this video and it resonated. the experience of kids of Viet boat people is unique. there can be PTSD involved and added pressure above the avg. immigration experience.
I’m glad you’re exploring more creative career fields bc pressure to “succeed” aside (by our parents definition), they really just want us to be happy.
so I’m rooting for you!!! grind it out and make your parents and yourself proud!!! 💖✨
Really happy for you tbh!
thank you so much :’)
great video! i'm studying design by myself too. I left Law school and now I'm a Advertising student.
thanks for sharing! I hope you’re enjoying the career change :)
Awesome video! I’m currently self learning UX. I am in the education sector and trying to find a way to merge the two! Currently doing the Google UX certificate course on Coursera and I like it so far!
Yes! This Google UX course is so helpful! I’m taking it too, and would love to share notes/review prototypes for anyone who’s down!
@@KathyHasRamen Awesome and all the best!! sounds good! Just started Week 3 and I’m happy to connect. Let me know how!
This is awesome, I’m doing the same and it’s nice being on this journey together x
yess we’re not alone!!
