I never regret spending money on gifts for the people I care about, on books and on delicious food. To me life would be so sad without those purchases.
I don't purchase my daughter many material things. However, we try to focus our spending on experiences instead. We recently backpacked in a rainforest for four days and three nights, she really was blown away by the beauty and epic views! She got to take time to contemplate her life and what she wants to do with it.
“Don’t worry too much about regretting your purchases and getting it always right. It is a journey. “ thank you Sophie for these words. It helps bring kindness and acceptance to myself ❤️
Having pets can be very expensive, but the profound joy animals bring to our life is worth it. My chihuahua is 14 years old, he made me so happy all these years, he filled my life with love, I can't put a price on that, and I am a proud minimalist...
I think I’m frugal with some aspects of my life but I have hobbies and I like to eat quality food, visiting nice places and books. What happened to me in my minimalist journey is that I lost interest on stuff and tons of clothing. I go out less and my group of friends are small now. I guess it’s a process or a journey as I like to say. Thank you for your video. It’s inspiring as always. 💚🥂
I think just living more thoughtfully is the goal . Thoughtful about all our choices and their impact . Thoughtful about the quality of the life we live , to our environment around us and to our fellow humans we interact with . Always being mindful how we can make “our little bubble” better, while finding joy , peace and contentment along the way 😊
We heard on the news about the devestating fires on Maui. Me and my families hearts go out to you and your neighbors. Let us know how you are doing - and what we may be able to do to help. Take care!
I have been "restricting" my budget those last few months for the unnecessary purchases or outings. I'm traveling to Japan in less than a month and I know I want to spend my money on that trip. And in the meantime, I don't even feel the need to go shopping or eat out because the simple thought of that travel keeps me grounded and happy.
Sophie, I hope the fire in Maui didn’t damage your house and property there. I sincerely hope that everything is OK with you, your house and your friends and family in Maui.
I was feeling really down this morning when I woke up, getting ready for work felt harder than normal. Then I saw your new video pop up and it's instantly made me feel so much more happier and calm. Thank you for bringing your positivity to this world 💛
Experiences. For years, I’d spend my Saturdays visiting Target, tj maxx, Ross etc for whatever “good deals” I could. I was shopping with no intention but it felt good to bring home things. Fast forward, I’ve been doing therapy & yoga the last 2 years. I’m on a healing journey and I’ve found that having less makes me happier. I’ve decluttered my home of items from the past that were holding me back. I know it may sound weird but I feel more free. I’ve been spending my money on trips and exercising. I’ve fallen in love with yoga and Pilates. Pilates is expensive but it’s worth any target/tj max trip I’ve been on. I’ve also been buying more intentionally clothing items. I find myself buying higher end items but they last longer & feel better on my body. And I only buy these items when I absolutely have to. I love your channel and your vibe❤❤
I loved this video! I would be interested to hear you talk more about what you look for in clothing. I’m interested in replacing things with investment pieces that will last as well, but don’t really know how to identify those things. Thanks for putting out such uplifting content. This feels like a really healthy spot on the internet :)
There’s a motif of selectiveness in minimalism that applies to how we spend our time and money. A journey of learning to be choosy with our limited resources. I love that your videos cover both spectrums. It’s aspirational and refreshing to know other people share similar values.
Hi, Sophie! I'm from Portugal and when I found your channel a few weeks ago it spoke to my heart, because I identify with you in the need to use/have/buy less and be/live more. That's when I found out that you lived in Portugal for a while in the beautiful village of Cascais.🥰 I know that you returned to Hawaii and just saw in the news, that Maui is having a lot of fires and is being evacuated. I don't know if that is the island you live in, but I pray everything is okay with you, your husband and your sweet dogs.🙏 Paula
I think good quality food, within my budget, is worth spending money on :). I love your videos, Sophie, and I really loved your reminder here that 'it's OK to take up space'. I hadn't thought about that as the flipside to minimalism, but it made sense and spoke to a subconscious fear around minimalism, as soon as you said it.
I agree with everything you said minus returning books you purchased and read. As a friend to a small bookseller this happens all the time and really hurts their business. Many small bookstores have buy back programs instead where you can get some of your money back and that now USED copy can be enjoyed by someone else. Even if you buy on Amazon many times you are actually buying from smaller sellers that need those profits to maintain their small business. Beautifully made video and loved hearing about your panel boarding experience as I have been considering purchasing one all summer.
I was watching your video as I heard of the fire disaster in Hawaii. Hope you and your loved ones are ok. Sending much love from your dedicated subscriber.
I agree. Use money intentionally but not necessarily holding back and being restrictive of anything wonderful or needed. Just being very selective. Minimalism can help us be clear about what is important so we can choose more effectively the things we do, including what to actually put funds toward so we are very happy and get the best outcome of where we use those dollars. To me, this is the true benefit to minimalism and slow living....just having internal calm and space to be clearer about what we want and what we are creating in our lives.
such a masterful explanation becuase when we are turly minmialist, we actully are not splurging anymore becuase we have a comprehensive view of what we need and dont need and what serves us. Thus those purchases are based in awareness instead of impulse. Love this!

I love this video Sophia! So many great suggestions. As you have explained in past videos, minimalism is different for everyone. There are no set rules & regulations. Your videos and shorts are definitely helping me to make better choices for myself and my life. I am more & more interested in a minimalist lifestyle. One of the things that gives me joy and doesn't cost me a cent is walking to the little forest near where I live and spending time there. I deep breathe, stretch, meditate, pray and enjoy my time there 🙏
Just lovely.. I agree that money spent on a museum is always well spent. It is a cathedral to the soul of everyone and one of the few places we can get lost in our thoughts. Thank you Malama for you wonderful website.
this video is so inspiring to me :) I love the vibe and it gives me a lot of ideas for no-cost-activities (for example, i love to go to plant-markets and green houses without my money. just to walk around the plants and pots really grounds me). greetings from the north of Germany Rostock. ❤🌞
I am such a saver, but recently decided to go ahead and get an old violin repaired that has been in my family for a long time. And I'm now looking into getting lessons so I can finally play it! Usually I would feel guilty about spending the money, but this has been on my list to do for nearly 15 years. ❤
your style of minimalism is similar to mine. I limit my belongings to things that are useful and sometimes just special to me, but I buy very intentionally, and I generally stick to a one in/ one out, so it really makes me think before buying. I have no need to fit my entire life into a suitcase, I just don't want my things to be a burden rather than a joy. I love paddle boarding too!
Some of the things I spend money on are the same as yours but one special thing for me is a really nice bouquet of flowers, seeing them everyday brings me so much joy and it feels like such a luxury 🥰
I am starting my minimalism lifestyle by first doing a thorough review on my spending and expenses. Your idea encouraged me to include expenses that bring me joy. I have added in expenses for my artist's date, and also treating friends/family for coffee/meal as those bring me joy.
Thank you as always for sharing. Your videos help calm me when I feel overwhelmed with life and keeping to my simplistic values as often as possible to be budget and environmentally friendly, but also to be overall sustainable and content with simple living. My husband and I now enjoy spending money on quality food items and creating menus of amazing meals to enjoy at home - the piece of paradise we work hard to maintain.
I cook at home a lot and brew my coffee and tea at home most of the time but I don’t mind spending on nice meals and coffee once in a while with my loved ones. We love traveling to new places and experiencing the local restaurants and coffee shops that has good reviews:) I don’t mind spending on health and wellness. It was wonderful and relaxing to watch your video❤️
I’ve had the last pair of rollerblades from my mid teens sat in a cupboard for 20 years! But they bought me so much joy when I looked at them that I couldn’t part with them! I’m now 37 and have just purchased a new set of wheels and brake for them and was overcome with how happy the prospect of me skating again after so many years made me! I’m excited to bring back into my life something that I had invested so much time in when I was growing up! Hopefully I won’t immediately fall flat on my face! It really is the simple things and money spent on them is always worthwhile and good for the soul.
Good quality chocolate is always worth it! I am a new subscriber; as I watch this beautiful video I am sending prayers and hope that you and your loved ones are all safe.
Hey! I came across your channel accidentally and I’m so glad I did! One thing for me that I won’t regret spending money is my yoga/ spinning classes & whatever has to do with my health and wellness 🎉
I totally enjoyed this ❤ I am now in an era of my life where I prioritize my mental and physical fitness. I signed up for a gym near me and took a considerable time to get off social media. I just came back recently to watch your videos since I kind of “craving” it. So happy to watch this episode ❤
This was great! Good quality bags and shoes, but at reasonable price points. Definitely not willing to spend on ridiculously priced Lux or designer items. I do like the shoes and bags in this vid and will definitely check them out. Like you, I love going to a cafe every now and then. I love my daily coffee at home but it’s nice to experience a different atmosphere every now and again. Organic foods and non toxic cleaners are another splurge I feel is worth the investment. 👍🏼
I have the notification bell turned on to 'all' for your videos but I didnt get a notification that this video was posted. Just wanted to let you know in case there is some glitch or your other subscribers had a similar issue. I LOVE your videos as always ❤😊🥰
I love going to cafes even though i can make better drinks at home 😅 love the focus on experiences. For the rest of the year, i want to focus on my health: buying healthy foods, pilates classes, dance classes, etc.
Loved this video! I enjoyed seeing the other side of your minimalism journey 💚 Jewelry, shoes, and clothes are things I don't mind spending extra on, especially the shoes. Once I tried on a pair of Duckfeet, I realized I can't go back! 😄 When you were talking about how you used to buy several items of clothing with $100 versus just one item, I instantly understood. Often, the $7 items at the thrift store reel me in, but I noticed recently that I actually don't have a lot of what I thrifted in the last year anymore. It was surprising to notice that, and now I want to consciously building my wardrobe 💖
Personally, I think to be a minimalist you must have money. If you don't have it, you don't have a choice because the circumstances force you to become a minimalist. Money allows it to be your choice.
Love your views on minimalism and it being a happy and full lifestyle not a trend - thanks for creating this space! I’ve been wanting a visor like yours for YEARS! Do you love the one you have? What’s the brand?
Thinking of you Sophie and praying for you and all of Hawaii. I know you’re not living on Maui anymore but I am certain you have friends and loved ones there❤
Two things that I spend my money and used to be criticized was coffee shops and gyms. For me the coffee ☕️ shop created a community for me as I got to meet people in my neighborhood. A community was extremely important for me and thanks to that coffee cup everyday I got to network and make a living as lots of people hired me to help them with their businesses once they hear about my skills. The gym not only help me stay active and in great shape, but also help my mental health to relax after a long day at work I got to meet great people at those gym classes. Thanks to the gym I build a great friendship with lots of amazing active people. That’s why I always will criticize the idea that coffee cup and gyms will make you poor.
In general ,one thing that i think is worth spending my earned money on is healthy life style. Your approach in life so precious and beautiful , i have watching your videos for 3 years ,so i got much more benefit from you, thanks alot for every value. Good Luck♡
The theme of 'intentionally living life' that this channel shares is such a refreshing and thought provoking perspective. It's causing me to reflect on many things, and how I live my life.
Wonderful video ❤ it's keeps me grounded as I learn more where I'm going with minimalistic. My goal next year is to find my clothe style but quality too 😊
Sophie, as I watch some of the videos from the Maui fires, I thank God that he spared you and your husband from the pain of seeing your beautiful, former island suffer from such a horrible disaster. 🪷Love, Giselle from Miami.
What a beautiful channel! We definitely have spending issues and own way too much stuff. But I have seen a shift on what we prioritize over the last year. It kind of came about organically. Food. We budget about $1200 a month on quality food. Not eating out. This is just organic local pasture raised grass fed food. We’ve stopped buying anything processed and when we do eat out we try to pick restaurants with the same idea and so eating out is expensive. Quality over quantity. We’ve been trying hard to spend money wisely on things that will last us the longest. Staying away from fast fashion and ordering direct to improve our impact on the earth. We actually live in a manufactured house in Wichita Kansas. We could live somewhere nicer or bigger maybe but I’d rather spend my money on quality food and things and experiences. Since we live in Kansas next year we will be spending a decent chunk on turning our smallish yard into an oasis! We came from Oregon and I really mourned the ocean mountains and trees but we make a bit more here and the cost of living is low so spending money on creating an oasis where we are at is the next best thing. I like to look at it like this. Would you rather get a tattoo done by some guy in his house or go to a professional? You get what you pay for and often times these things leave a lasting impression on us.

Hi, Sophie!
I'm from Portugal and when I found your channel a few weeks ago it spoke to my heart, because I identify with you in the need to use/have/buy less and be/live more.
That's when I found out that you lived in Portugal for a while in the beautiful village of Cascais.🥰
I know that you returned to Hawaii and just saw in the news, that Maui is having a lot of fires and is being evacuated.
I don't know if that is the island you live in, but I pray everything is okay with you, your husband and your sweet dogs.🙏

I think good quality food, within my budget, is worth spending money on :). I love your videos, Sophie, and I really loved your reminder here that 'it's OK to take up space'. Often, the $7 items at the thrift store reel me in, but I noticed recently that I actually don't have a lot of what I thrifted in the last year anymore. It was surprising to notice that, and now I want to consciously building my wardrobe 💖
Had sandals like the Huaraches as a kid and now I shall have them as an adult 🥰🤗 thanks Sophie!
Organic, cruel free! Costs more, but worth it to me. 💚❤️🐾🐾
Thinking of you Sophie and praying for you and all of Hawaii. I know you’re not living on Maui anymore but I am certain you have friends and loved ones there❤
a meal with a person who has a story to tell that inspires us
ohh that's such a good one!
In other words, you have identified your "rich" life! Bravo 👏🏻
❤️❤️❤️
A part 2 to this video would be indeed nice 😊

Good Luck♡

Experiences, travel- I don’t feel guilty spending money on. Also, extra curricular activities for my kids.
❤️❤️❤️
Love this video so much! Spend money intentionally but not being excessively frugal and stingy has been my goal.
The theme of 'intentionally living life' that this channel shares is such a refreshing and thought provoking perspective. It's causing me to reflect on many things, and how I live my life.
Wonderful video ❤ it's keeps me grounded as I learn more where I'm going with minimalistic. My goal next year is to find my clothe style but quality too 😊
Thanks for watching
To me minimalism is simplify without restricting what's value to you
Thank you for sharing/imparting your insight about living intentionally ms. Sophie.❤
Sophie, as I watch some of the videos from the Maui fires, I thank God that he spared you and your husband from the pain of seeing your beautiful, former island suffer from such a horrible disaster. 🪷Love, Giselle from Miami.
I love watching your videos so much! I feel calm during and after, and really inspired for attaining more simple living. Thank you so much❤

Dance lessons, when I waltz, foxtrot etc., I'm filled with immense joy.
Love this ❤️
