  • I just upgraded my Cardinal with an IFD550 to go with the existing IFD540. Ride along on a coupled LPV+V approach to see how they work together to give you nav and synthetic vision right to the end of the runway.

    I did like your new Cygnet yokes you chose. There was also a Korry Mason a little smaller used in the Premier 3A I liked. PS. "dead nuts" now I know you are a mechanical engineer, or manufacturing engineer.

      Indeed, I am a mechanical engineer. Thanks for enjoying it!

    Keith: what is the purpose of the round inserts in your vent windows? Are they for inflight ventilation... or dropping messages during the bomb run? :-) I seem to recall an STC for larger square inserts in the left and right main door windows as well, and wonder why you chose the small round ones instead. I assume you can not lower your vent windows with the crank handle with these small inserts. Is that correct? Really enjoy your videos and am going to buy a Cardinal if I get my medical back.... and after you do the pre-buy. Thanks in advance. Mark Polansky, KANP.

      Hi Mark. The small circles are photo windows, they pop right out. With a digital camera you don't need to put your eye to the eyepiece... just watch the screen. And I didn't want to have the large square photo window in my line of sight all the time.
      It does also give you some airflow when they are out, but not a lot. Sticking a large enough camera lens out the hole pretty much stops the inflow, nice on cold days.
      The vent windows work normally with those installed. They don't lower, the hinge along the back side and stick out into the wind, like cars used to do! I look forward to helping you with your Cardinal once you sort out the medical.

    That is a very gorgeous Cessna 177 Cardinal RG and the interior/panel...speechless!!!!!!! Thanks for sharing this! Awesome video quality/audio!🙏🇺🇸👍
    In my humble opinion: Cessna should really consider using the 177 Cardinal's design/body, and reintroduce it as the "all new" Cessna 172 Skyhawk. The Cardinal still looks very modern and sexy, not to mention all other benefits. Break out the jigs Cessna/Textron, dust them off to help keep pricing down and get to work.
    Also, please offer an optional JET A power-plant and a more modern T-handle throttle quadrant, like you were already doing with the JT-A Cessna 182.
    When you finish that, take the original 172 Skyhawk, and make it an affordable trainer!

    Great video and demo of the IFD 550. Excellent panel set up and nice camera work, the second view of the IFD's was great.
    I think you got it right regarding the CDI indications at 5:35, so far as I understand it way up here in Canada anyway, for GPS based approaches the "Lateral CDI" indicates the Approach Course and the Vertical CDI indicates the "Glideslope" on an LPV or the Simulated Glidepath on an LNAV+V, but no one's going to shoot you if you give them traditional names...although this is UA-cam and there are a few opinionated people here. Great video, thanks for sharing! And wow, I'm jealous of the house on an airport! Cheers.

    Been practicing GPS RNAV Garmin1000 approaches on XPlane11, just a sim. guy, I'm just happy I went from doing direct flights and always bringing the plane in manually,
    to learning flight plans, and then how to do a proper RNAV approach and let the Garmin bring you in right down to minimums and then disarm AP and set her down. That was good
    enough for me, after a year and a half of studying and flying. I'm studying the VNAV features as well now. If you're flying somewhere like to Telluride, it's a good idea to master the
    RNAV (and ILS of course) in case of any weather or other issues that might arise. Real life is real life, but even in XPlane the RNAV LPV approach takes a lot of the anxiety out
    of a given approach. Like if I'm flying into Telluride or Sedona, I just arm the approach maybe 85 miles or so out, make sure I do my TOD so I'm down to the IAF altitude,
    and then just let it bring the plane on in. It's really fantastic. Of course you need to hand-fly it and get that down first, then you can move on to the RNAV and ILS approaches.
    It also helps you take the worry out of centerlining a landing, although sometimes the weather or windage, etc., and other factors, can mess with that, and you'll have to
    crab the plane in, slip, and/or disarm the AP earlier and correct.

    OK, Made the connection as I'm a CFO member. Just bought this plane a few months ago. I need to replace the KCS-55A and the problem is finding systems that are compatible with the rest of the panel. Getting new paint in October... much like your paint scheme. Not a Garmin fan either!

      For what it's worth, although I had an NSD-360 HSI before the Aspen my avionics shop suggested I have the 60-2 converted to KCS-55 mode and set the Aspen up to emulate the KCS-55. He said in his experience that resulted in a smoother interface, and it does work well.

    Love the panel ,I have always liked the Cardinal. I have heard many different numbers, what does your Cardinal RG cruise at 8500 speed and fuel? I have an Cirrus SR-22 and am having the IFD540 installed right now and can't wait to play with it.

    • @cardinalflyer

      Performance depends on many things. I find that I got book performance with a stock exhaust system, now that I have a Powerflow it's better. At standard temperature, 8500 feet and lean of peak I figure perhaps 145 knots true at 9 GPH.

    HI Keith,
    Beautiful plane. I'm looking for a Cardinal RG and was wondering what year your plane is? How much did it cost to put in your panel? What's the best way to put together a plane like yours? Buy a late 70's Cardinal with low airframe and engine/prop times, new interior, but original instruments and then just gut the panel and install new? What would I expect to have in the plane once it's all tricked out properly?

    • @cardinalflyer
      @cardinalflyer  4 роки тому

      Mine is a 1976. There are different theories about the best strategy. First you need a clean airframe, then it is a question of whether you can find one put together the way you want. If so, you'll save money over doing it yourself. I help people with both of these, check out my web page at cardinalinspections.com.

    I also have a 177RG and was considering the Aspen 1000 Pro and the IFD 550. Have heard about several failures in the Aspen unit. What is your experience with it? What autopilot are you using? Thanks, N177AP

    • @cardinalflyer
      @cardinalflyer  7 років тому

      As a founder of the Cardinal Flyers I've heard the same... a few of our members have experienced screen failures but the company quickly resolved them. I think one member had two in a row, Mine has been solid. As can be seen in my other videos I kept analog backups for airspeed and altitude just in case. My autopilot is an Stec 60-2, although since it's an analog autopilot I'm watching the Stec 3100 closely.
