    Hi Taren. Thanks for another great video. I find them quite easily digestible. What do you think about the impact of the local and race landscape on the choice triathlon bike vs road bike? I have recently moved to Vancouver and don't see much of the flat space for a ride in an aerodynamic position here. I didn't explore the area much yet, though. Nevertheless, in your opinion, is it better to train regularly using a road bike on the hills? I guess the benefits of the triathlon bike are limited mostly to the race day in this case.

    After I put aerobars on my road bike, my most comfortable saddle in the world became "the crusher" while in the aero position. After measurements and looking at specs I decided to get a Fizit Tritone saddle 6.5. It took awhile to adjust and get used to a "perch". So call me weird, I put a split nose saddle on my road bike, and its just as comfortable for long pace rides in both positions.

    2:45 Unless, of course, you got electronic shifting like Shimano's Di2, SRAM's eTap, or Campagnolo's EPS, where you can have eight shift buttons with four on the brake levers and another four on the aero bars(SRAM's eTap will only give you four buttons called blips.(two on the brake levers and another two on the aero bars). You push either one of the left buttons to downshift and either one of the right ones two upshift on the rear derailleur. To shift the front derailleur, you press both the left and right buttons simultaneously.)

    So I've just serviced my road bike, which I bought 2nd hand to get into triathlons a little while back and have loved riding and have had so much joy from. And they've told me(and I agree) that she prob wont make another service. But she has got me to this point. My first 70.3 next weekend! Whoop Whoop! My question is I'm going to step it up now the full distance next year. I can only afford to buy one bike at the moment. Should it be a triathlon bike? I do most of my rides alone anyway. At that distance it's the only option really, hey? P.S. Thanks for the content Taren
    That LBS tip at the end is gold. I love online, and almost felt(past tense) charitable giving the LBS my business, until I needed a few things immediately and used them and developed a relationship. The knowledge you get for free is re-donk-u-less!!

    Get a touring patch kit (with actual glue, not pre-glued patches) and never buy new inner tubes ever again! Unless of course the puncture is unpatchable, but that rarely happens.

    Hey TAren, what aero bars for a road bike would you recommend? I am deciding between the short profile design T2 Dl and the long profile design T2.

    • @ChrisB-uh7fx
      @ChrisB-uh7fx 7 років тому

      I used Profile clip ons for a while until I found Redshift Sports. Their aerobars are a bit more adjustable than the Profile bars I've used, and they also have a neat fast forward seat post that will get your hips more forward than you would get with clip on aerobars alone. I've used them the last three years and love them.

    I just did my first Tri on a mountain bike (with the tires exchanged for the road) and would like to get either a Tri or road bike for doing Tris next year. I can't afford both.
    I've never tried out a road or Tri bike. But I'm extremely flexible and have a strong core and am finding myself preferring to lean forward on my mountain bike and when I'm cycling at the gym when I want to go faster, which is practically all the time.
    I also prefer to practice mostly at the gym and then outdoors on my own.
    And I have fast-twitch, as opposed to slow-twitch muscles. I plan to concentrate on the Sprints.
    My question is this: do I need to learn how to ride a road bike before moving on to a Tri bike?

    • @alexp7750
      @alexp7750 5 років тому

      how did the tri go on the mountain bike? was it do able and how long was the biking distance? looking to do a 56mile bike, but not sure if a road bike will work...

    • @joyellen1290
      @joyellen1290 3 роки тому

      @@alexp7750 Yes, both my Tris with my mountain bike went well. I did the Morro Bay Tri and the Wildflower Tri, in which I was riding past people who couldn't make it up the hill riding on their road bikes. Practice is most important. I didn't set any records, but I wasn't trying to. Running is definitely not my thing. I'm now back to yoga and dancing.

    We know we have to take advantage of the technology, but in my opinion if you feel comfortable using a TT bike used it.. if you feel like converting your tt bike into a road bike just do it.. and yes there is a few differences but back then we didn't have all those specs, and I can probably say, companies look the way you can spend more and more money and the end both bikes use same wheels why not to have all in one..??

    Perhaps people have read the arguments against TT bikes in time trials. Everybody that can afford it gets the mechanical advantage (making it no real benefit) but TT bikes exponentially increase the bodily danger to the athletes. Add to this mix that triathlon is a great amateur sport and Tri bikes, and even just aerobars on a road bike, are a formula for disaster, where writing into the rules of Ironman and other distance events road bikes would save bones. After all if it were allowed everybody would ride recumbent bicycles at 60 miles an hour.
