This is a fairly common phenomenon exhibited by some water fowl species. Most often it occurs within a related family of whereby a single dominant female will take on the responsibility of providing guidance and upbringing for the brood of related sisters, cousins, daughters. The aggregation is called a "crèche".

Wow! What an amazing thing to witness. Thank you for sharing! I hope this video will be online for years to come so we can watch it again from time to time. It's a great way to bring a smile to someone's face.
Fabulous. Thanks for taking the time to stalk these lovelies. We have them here on Lake Winnipesaukee, NH . . . they're so skittish. I have never seen so many at once.
Not the only mama- crèche : a group of young animals (such as penguins or bats) gathered in one place for care and protection usually by one or more adults
Yes, there was more than one mom that hatched these, but there was only one single mom caring for them. The other hens retreated together to another part of the lake.
Fascinating, but I'd like to know how she came to have a brood of 76 ducklings to care for. Is this a "normal" brood for a merganser, or is she also a nanny?
Is NOBODY noticing this is NOT a duck!!?? This is a grebe, who dives under the water. And the little ones are NO ducklings! Their song is also different from the duck's quacking.

frabjousfrank not sure if you got autocorrected, but just incase anyone else was curious the term is crèche.

Nice job Brent. Wildlife photography takes a lot of passion, patience, and prowess. I'll add pizza just because I'd get hungry out there. :)

Beautiful...
So damn cute
awesome, love to see this
Even among birds are babysitters...hehehe.
Great. 😀
The typo in the title is driving me crazy, though. It's M-e-r-g-a-n-s-e-r-s. You've transposed the G and the first S. Names are important!
:D wow!
cute guys

A common merganser is a duck, not a grebe.
I had to watch the video before I believed the news, at first I thought: another silly photoshop joke / fake. But nope! Good job!
Great photography - but please edit the title so more people can find your video via the correct spelling!
LOL. I can’t believe I’ve never noticed that and no one else has commented. Thanks.
OBDENIŠTE - KINDERGARTEN
Check your spelling. It's Mergansers not Mersangers.
