It is bizarre that I am 40 years into my career and I am still seeing the requirement for a college degree. I had removed my BS degree from my resume and every single HR person required me to provide this information. I am in computer sciences and frankly that education from a University did a terrible job of preparing me for my first programming job and provides nothing for me now.

As a lifelong academic, I don't see the point in Ivy league school. I've rarely been asked where my degrees come from. People care whether or not you can do the job, not that you wasted money on a school with a flashy name. No one should care about these schools or anything about them. The sole focus should be what can they teach? Are they actually doing a better job, or is just the name of the school? Some of the absolute best teachers are hiding at Community Colleges, where most of your instructors keep their egos in check so you can actually get help and guidance from them.

I did graduate (decades ago) from one of the more prominent hbcu uni. Some on the ppl whom I know, from our mutual enrollment, completed graduate programs (law, other things) at Ivy League. Nobody really brings this up at homecoming festivities. I attended a state uni for grad school: when I attend association conferences or functions for my profession, not one single person ever asked which grad program I completed. Not one. In 2021, someone from uni days sent a pic around of one of our friend’s being sworn in as a judge in HER state. SHE didn’t put it on her FB, or 📢. One of our mutuals who sees her (the judge) oftern, attended the ceremony and took the pic and sent it to our friends. Ppl don’t really ask your school. It’s on resume, or vita. If you get the job, they won’t mention your school anymore at the job.
Oxford University, the top school in the world, costs $22,000. University of Heidelberg is $18,000. Go to Europe for a fraction of the cost. Travel like crazy. And get away from the US BS.
A family member of mine went to university in France 🇫🇷 & Switzerland 🇨🇭 for a fraction of the cost ! They also got access to affordable housing & transportation discounts etc
My friends daughter went to college in Netherlands. After the last class on Thursday, she’d be on a train with her Europass for some other country. She had a blast.
My daughter dual-enrolled in high school, got her AS degree at a local community college, and is one semester away from her bachelor's degree at a local state school. When she goes to law school, it just so happens that my alma mater's law school is local, too. And I don't have to donate vital organs to pay for it😊
Ivy League isn't what it used to be. Its best to go to a community college depending on the quality of them near you. I had a professor say he enjoyed teaching at community colleges because it wasn't as restrictive and you have students from many different background that can offer various viewpoints. Whereas in some colleges, the students tend to be mostly religious or share the same political beliefs.
my friend after high school couldn't find a job he like then he went to local community college to get this real estate management study , he find a job right after class ended and live well in life.
I've worked with Ivy League grads in the financial world. The only thing I've found them to be truly excellent in is arrogance and pretentiousness. An HR acquaintance of mine at my old corporation told me that place trashed Ivy resumes. Too much hassle. Not enough upside to the corporation.

I graduated in a community college. I was working full time and studying at the same time. I made it and I graduated with a Masters Degree without any student loan debt. Now I earn $275k/year while maintaining my humble and simple lifestyle. I have co workers and subordinates who graduated in expensive private schools with $300k student loans. I help them land a job and get paid well so they have money to pay back their loans.
My neighbor's son went to one of the SUNYs to study business. He did not get a job for almost a year. He worked in a pizza store and a few other odd jobs. Only one or two students from his class who had connections in finance companies (and had close to a 3.95 GPA) got internships there. He is now working in a car dealership in sales. It is not easy to get good jobs
I went to school at Columbia University. My tuition was 2k per credit hour (124 hours needed to graduate), the school did not have any of the majors I wanted to study (Business), there was no Greek life or party life, and I had no student housing due to how difficult housing is in NYC. I graduated with a degree in PoliSci because they didnt have my intended major and I spent 3 years unemployed because of Covid. I will NEVER encourage my kids to go to an Ivy League school over a state school.
PoliSci? You should have known unemployment was part of that package. Don't blame the school. If you would have majored in STEM I'm sure you would have done better during COVID.

Columbia was ranked no.2 in the country and I got waitlisted by Harvard, so it's the one EVERYONE told me to attend. Most students are looking at ROI aka Return On Investment. Going to Harvard to get a teaching degree to thereafter make 40K after spending 360K in books and tuition not to include living expenses does not make sense!
As a person who works with professional corporations, I can tell you that businesses are getting tired of the so called "educated" options. We are finding entitlement, activism, ignorance working with others, arrogance (wanting to change processes without understanding current ones first) and lack of drive are issues we see with the highly educated. Those that haven't gone through those educational institutions seem to have more hunger for success, are willing to prove it and get along with the regular co-worker.
I think the university system works on an out-dated model that must change. I know an old friend who went through college and graduated with a business degree and had zero experience in an actual business. Once he graduated he got a job offer, he worked there and they let him go because he lacked basic social skills that are required to work with others. He was book smart but socially he was extremely awkward and judgmental to everyone because he felt entitled. He’s working as a bus boy at a chain restaurant now because he lacks the bad skills that are required in interpersonal relationships. Instead of trying to work on his own communication issues, he just decided he doesn’t care. That’s the problem with universities, they lecture and then they have no obligation to teach basic skills needed to be able to work in the real world. A business degree without any real world experience is just a major problem.
Jessica says “Public schools in the south” with such disdain … as if UT Austin is a half-rate school. What an elitist! She probably doesn’t realize that the top 10% of each high school class can access UT Austin which is what makes it so diverse while still having rigorous academics.
Her distain comes from the psychological need to have her Ivy degree be "worth it". I've experienced similar attitudes from colleagues that went to "the" state school whereas I got a 85% ride at a little liberal arts college. After decades in the high-flying corporate world my opinion is that success is mostly up to the individual. It has very little to do with how prestigious your degree is.
My bachelor's degree graduation was cancelled, that was so depressing after all the hard work. Then we had to do online hybrid with masks in person all through my master's degree program. That was so lame. Worst experience ever. So miserable. I feel bad for the people who just want to learn. I know their pain.

They are missing out on the social aspect of college and more individualized attention of the smaller schools. In the state schools, you are just a number. Making the small schools more affordable would help a lot.

Just go to the college that gives you the most financial aide (assuming they have your major). In the end, your internships are what get you a job, not the name of your college. And trade schools are also a great way to get a good job after your apprenticeship. I went to an Ivy and work with people that went to state schools. We do the same job. It doesn't matter in the end.
My cousin quit college, got a really good job at a company and bought a house last year under his 30. A well round person does not require college degrees, only real world experience.
If I can make a suggestion as a 30-year-old who never went to college.... TRAVEL!!! It's much more affordable and it's much more rewarding. I'm okay being a janitor because I'm not in debt and I don't have to be married to my job. I can leave up to six months a year and not get fired. What lawyer, doctor, professor, journalist, etc. can do that??
No offense but I doubt we're seeing an en masse dumping of the Ivies so much as more students wisening up and simply not applying to the Ivies. At the end of the day the Ivies' admission rate stands at 3%. Chances are over 97% of those who didnt apply wouln't have been accepted anyway.
I went to Penn State and Community Colleges and collected enough credits to go to UT nursing school. BSN. I worked for 36 years in nursing. In the state job I achieved, I beat out master-prepared nurses with my experience. The medical field needs more educated nurses. Go for it. I loved being a nurse. ❤
My daughter attends an Ivy League school.. It was her dream school She loved her experience and has thrived academically and socially -- and the financial aid was financially beneficial for our family ... but I can't say that is would be great for everyone ... or that college is the best move for everyone
Unless you need to be there to cut up a cadaver in med school or something, why can't it all be done online for a miniscule fraction of the cost of in-person college? The college loan program seems to be there to prop up this buggy-whip industry of filling college buildings and dorms.
I agree with a lot of what you’re both saying. I took some classes with an online school for motion graphics . I was coming at it as my “retirement” career but quite honestly for a young person seeking to go into this field it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than “art school”, the classes are extremely hands on and the instructors are all working professionals. The trades are a great option as well…start earning money quickly, no debt and a real skill that will always be needed. Also, in this day and age one needs to think of “portable” skills…wherever you go you will be able to earn money. (I should add, I have one of those “expensive” degrees…)
Love how people are focused on the cost when Ivy League schools have the best financial aid packages for students from average to below average income households. It was cheaper for me to go to Princeton than any of the local colleges within a 100 mile radius from where I grew up and MUCH cheaper than any of the UC schools But seems like people are more focused on preconceived notions or their individual experiences with a few Ivy League grads to see past their own prejudices and explain away all of the amazing benefits one gets from attending one of these universities But hey, what do I know I just graduated from one 🙃
Agree with what you said. My sibling is currently attending an Ivy as a full ride student. He will be graduating debt-free. So many people still assume that attending an Ivy means going under tremendous debt just by looking at the sticker price. I also know someone who graduated from Cornell, but was able to pay back any loans he had within a year because of his financial aid package. So many people act like they know everything about the Ivy League when they are just displaying their ignorance and jealousy.

I started contributing to 457 plan for my son early, and it has accumulated so much over the years that it has more than enough to pay for 4 years of Stanford, which is where he’ll be going. Plan early and earn compound interest instead of pay it.

I would also like to throw out there that between trade schools and the Ivy League there are tons of places known as public and private universities and colleges. The options are not become an investment banker or a plumber. You can graduate from a "Southern college" as a lawyer, teacher, nurse, doctor, admin, journalist, etc. While most people don't wind up following a straight career path, they are still hoping for some return on their investment, like being able to get a job after they graduate. Which if your degree is in Women's studies, might be hard to do.

Trade schools and Community colleges offer great educations. If later on when you become more mature and can support yourself, if you want to further your education at a certain university go for it. Life is costly , we are all struggling to put food on the table and pay for health care.
Actually if you make Phi Theta Kappa (honor society) colleges will offer you a free ride. Usually state school w/free room and board. However most kids see community as second rate schools and don’t want to put in the work.
Go to trades school become a plumber, electrician, mechanical... 6-7 years, you'll be making 6 figures with no debt. If you're great at math we still need engineers though.🤓
college is only acceptable when one NEEDS actual.professional guidance in the fields of medicine, science, law, engineering.....but other.professions can and should be done under a trade or specialty post secondary school and it's okay to go.that route

The universities that have been safest for Jewish students since October 7th, 2023 have been in the south of the United States, or in Israel. It's no accident that the drop in Ivy League applications corresponds with an increase in university applications in the south particularly from students from NY/NJ.
Elite college may work for many, but if you're going to get an advanced degree anyway, who cares? I have colleagues that went to Harvard, Yale and Princeton. I make just as much money as they do, which is to say about $400k. I went to a no name undergrad and a grad school ranked around 100, but here I am.
People who can get accepted will almost always go. And with the multi-Billion dollar endowments, it's often cheaper for a student from a middle or lower income family to go to an Ivy league school because of financial aid available

Cornell has one of the best Hotel Industry Programs in the world! And has, since there were only two or three in the world, one of the others being a program in Switzerland!
I think I read a few years ago, that a study found that, the education you get from Harvard is no different than what you get at lets say a University in Oklahoma, but there are some companies that won't accept you unless you have graduated from an ivy league school
Going to state schools and all that sounds great for probably most kids, but it’s really really nice for intellectual kids to be amongst a larger number of other intellectual kids. Most states have a pretty good university and the cost to stay in state is usually much less expensive and a much better investment in available jobs vs loan amounts.
A dip in ivy league applications is hardly a reflection to a lean into southern public state schools. Overall state and public schools saw an increase. Also the US is so behind in tech skills that we expanded visas to allow for skilled tech. Trade schools are definitely needed but pretending that we are not well below science and tech wise and we not longer compete globally is reducing our capitalistic abilities domestically
College was very over hyped. I was fortunate enough to have and older brother to watch his friends get degrees to end up waiting tables or something completely unrelated to their degree. That was a big warning sign for me. I also make more then most of my friends with degrees in IT. Not to mention debt to income ratio.

I graduated in a community college. I was working full time and studying at the same time.
I made it and I graduated with a Masters Degree without any student loan debt.
Now I earn $275k/year while maintaining my humble and simple lifestyle.
I have co workers and subordinates who graduated in expensive private schools with $300k student loans. I help them land a job and get paid well so they have money to pay back their loans.

My neighbor's son went to one of the SUNYs to study business. He did not get a job for almost a year. He worked in a pizza store and a few other odd jobs. Only one or two students from his class who had connections in finance companies (and had close to a 3.95 GPA) got internships there. He is now working in a car dealership in sales.

I went to school at Columbia University. My tuition was 2k per credit hour (124 hours needed to graduate), the school did not have any of the majors I wanted to study (Business), there was no Greek life or party life, and I had no student housing due to how difficult housing is in NYC. I graduated with a degree in PoliSci because they didnt have my intended major and I spent 3 years unemployed because of Covid.
I will NEVER encourage my kids to go to an Ivy League school over a state school.

Columbia was ranked no.2 in the country and I got waitlisted by Harvard, so it's the one EVERYONE told me to attend. It wasn't until after I had already enrolled that I realized they did not have a business program.

Most students are looking at ROI aka Return On Investment. Going to Harvard to get a teaching degree to thereafter make 40K after spending 360K in books and tuition not to include living expenses does not make sense!
As a person who works with professional corporations, I can tell you that businesses are getting tired of the so called "educated" options. We are finding entitlement, activism, ignorance working with others, arrogance (wanting to change processes without understanding current ones first) and lack of drive are issues we see with the highly educated. Those that haven't gone through those educational institutions seem to have more hunger for success, are willing to prove it and get along with the regular co-worker.
I think the university system works on an out-dated model that must change. I know an old friend who went through college and graduated with a business degree and had zero experience in an actual business. Once he graduated he got a job offer, he worked there and they let him go because he lacked basic social skills that are required to work with others. He was book smart but socially he was extremely awkward and judgmental to everyone because he felt entitled. He’s working as a bus boy at a chain restaurant now because he lacks the bad skills that are required in interpersonal relationships. Instead of trying to work on his own communication issues, he just decided he doesn’t care.
That’s the problem with universities, they lecture and then they have no obligation to teach basic skills needed to be able to work in the real world.
A business degree without any real world experience is just a major problem.

Jessica says “Public schools in the south” with such disdain … as if UT Austin is a half-rate school. What an elitist! She probably doesn’t realize that the top 10% of each high school class can access UT Austin which is what makes it so diverse while still having rigorous academics.
Her distain comes from the psychological need to have her Ivy degree be "worth it". I've experienced similar attitudes from colleagues that went to "the" state school whereas I got a 85% ride at a little liberal arts college. After decades in the high-flying corporate world my opinion is that success is mostly up to the individual. It has very little to do with how prestigious your degree is.

My bachelor's degree graduation was cancelled, that was so depressing after all the hard work. Then we had to do online hybrid with masks in person all through my master's degree program. That was so lame. Worst experience ever. So miserable. I feel bad for the people who just want to learn. I know their pain.

They are missing out on the social aspect of college and more individualized attention of the smaller schools. In the state schools, you are just a number. Making the small schools more affordable would help a lot.

Just go to the college that gives you the most financial aide (assuming they have your major). In the end, your internships are what get you a job, not the name of your college. And trade schools are also a great way to get a good job after your apprenticeship. I went to an Ivy and work with people that went to state schools. We do the same job. It doesn't matter in the end.
My cousin quit college, got a really good job at a company and bought a house last year under his 30. A well round person does not require college degrees, only real world experience.

If I can make a suggestion as a 30-year-old who never went to college.... TRAVEL!!! It's much more affordable and it's much more rewarding. What lawyer, doctor, professor, journalist, etc. can do that??

No offense but I doubt we're seeing an en masse dumping of the Ivies so much as more students wisening up and simply not applying to the Ivies. At the end of the day the Ivies' admission rate stands at 3%. Chances are over 97% of those who didnt apply wouln't have been accepted anyway.

I went to Penn State and Community Colleges and collected enough credits to go to UT nursing school. BSN. I worked for 36 years in nursing. In the state job I achieved, I beat out master-prepared nurses with my experience. The medical field needs more educated nurses. Go for it. I loved being a nurse. ❤

It was her dream school She loved her experience and has thrived academically and socially -- and the financial aid was financially beneficial for our family ... but I can't say that is would be great for everyone ... or that college is the best move for everyone
Unless you need to be there to cut up a cadaver in med school or something, why can't it all be done online for a miniscule fraction of the cost of in-person college? The college loan program seems to be there to prop up this buggy-whip industry of filling college buildings and dorms.
I agree with a lot of what you’re both saying. I took some classes with an online school for motion graphics . I was coming at it as my “retirement” career but quite honestly for a young person seeking to go into this field it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than “art school”, the classes are extremely hands on and the instructors are all working professionals. The trades are a great option as well…start earning money quickly, no debt and a real skill that will always be needed. Also, in this day and age one needs to think of “portable” skills…wherever you go you will be able to earn money. (I should add, I have one of those “expensive” degrees…)
Canadian universities include 2 years of real world experience so you actually graduate with 2 years experience under your belt in your degree area
Love how people are focused on the cost when Ivy League schools have the best financial aid packages for students from average to below average income households.
It was cheaper for me to go to Princeton than any of the local colleges within a 100 mile radius from where I grew up and MUCH cheaper than any of the UC schools
But seems like people are more focused on preconceived notions or their individual experiences with a few Ivy League grads to see past their own prejudices and explain away all of the amazing benefits one gets from attending one of these universities

Agree with what you said. My sibling is currently attending an Ivy as a full ride student. He will be graduating debt-free. So many people still assume that attending an Ivy means going under tremendous debt just by looking at the sticker price. I also know someone who graduated from Cornell, but was able to pay back any loans he had within a year because of his financial aid package. So many people act like they know everything about the Ivy League when they are just displaying their ignorance and jealousy.

I started contributing to 457 plan for my son early, and it has accumulated so much over the years that it has more than enough to pay for 4 years of Stanford, which is where he’ll be going. Plan early and earn compound interest instead of pay it.
That was shockingly well conducted and both women put together some strong arguments. I would also like to throw out there that between trade schools and the Ivy League there are tons of places known as public and private universities and colleges. The options are not become an investment banker or a plumber. You can graduate from a "Southern college" as a lawyer, teacher, nurse, doctor, admin, journalist, etc. While most people don't wind up following a straight career path, they are still hoping for some return on their investment, like being able to get a job after they graduate. Which if your degree is in Women's studies, might be hard to do.

But with the measles vaccines, measles deaths dropped from 2 to 4 millions per year to 200,000 or less mostly in the unvaccinated.
I've had COVID twice. The first time, I was infected by a vaccinated person who had a bad reaction to the shot. The second time was because I got sick from the Canadian "wildfires"smoke in my area. Other than that vitamins, sunlight and connecting with others protected my immune system. Glory to God!😆

Trade schools and Community colleges offer great educations. If later on when you become more mature and can support yourself, if you want to further your education at a certain university go for it. Life is costly , we are all struggling to put food on the table and pay for health care.
Actually if you make Phi Theta Kappa (honor society) colleges will offer you a free ride. Usually state school w/free room and board. However most kids see community as second rate schools and don’t want to put in the work.
Go to trades school become a plumber, electrician, mechanical... 6-7 years, you'll be making 6 figures with no debt. If you're great at math we still need engineers though.🤓

New York and New Jersey has the largest concentration of Jews in the United States. The universities that have been safest for Jewish students since October 7th, 2023 have been in the south of the United States, or in Israel. It's no accident that the drop in Ivy League applications corresponds with an increase in university applications in the south particularly from students from NY/NJ.

I went to a small College that was elite and it never helped me in my career.
Elite college may work for many, but if you're going to get an advanced degree anyway, who cares? I have colleagues that went to Harvard, Yale and Princeton. I make just as much money as they do, which is to say about $400k. I went to a no name undergrad and a grad school ranked around 100, but here I am.
People who can get accepted will almost always go. And with the multi-Billion dollar endowments, it's often cheaper for a student from a middle or lower income family to go to an Ivy league school because of financial aid available

Cornell has one of the best Hotel Industry Programs in the world! And has, since there were only two or three in the world, one of the others being a program in Switzerland!
I think I read a few years ago, that a study found that, the education you get from Harvard is no different than what you get at lets say a University in Oklahoma, but there are some companies that won't accept you unless you have graduated from an ivy league school

Going to state schools and all that sounds great for probably most kids, but it’s really really nice for intellectual kids to be amongst a larger number of other intellectual kids.

Most states have a pretty good university and the cost to stay in state is usually much less expensive and a much better investment in available jobs vs loan amounts.

A dip in ivy league applications is hardly a reflection to a lean into southern public state schools. Overall state and public schools saw an increase. Also the US is so behind in tech skills that we expanded visas to allow for skilled tech. Trade schools are definitely needed but pretending that we are not well below science and tech wise and we not longer compete globally is reducing our capitalistic abilities domestically
College was very over hyped. I was fortunate enough to have and older brother to watch his friends get degrees to end up waiting tables or something completely unrelated to their degree. That was a big warning sign for me. I also make more then most of my friends with degrees in IT. Not to mention debt to income ratio.
