Extremely happy with my classic one from London Fog with all the features you mentioned PLUS leather buckles, a removable hood and removable liner attached with buttons making it very versatile and button closure at the pockets, classic knee length. I love it! Suggest checking it out.
This has been a great video Mariana 😊I really enjoyed your attention to the details of each trench coat. I do agree that the Uniqlo and Massimo Dutti versions are by far the best. A trench coat is a versatile piece of outerwear and having a good quality one is important. For myself, I would be tempted by the Uniqlo version mainly due to the reasonable price.😊
Any U.S. viewers: Dillard's now has Antonio Melani clothing made with Loro Piano fabrics (top notch). The prices aren't cheap, but great for what you get.
Yes, I buy lot of Antonio Melani clothing. Perfect fitting. I normally wear size 4 across all the good brands. You get what you pay for and pay for what you get.
I see your new video, I Like, then I watch! No regrets, what’s not to love? I really love your classy, ladylike, elegant style. I’m so glad it’s “in-style” to look elegant again! I’ve been waiting for this “trend” since the late 90s. For me, it never left❤
Mariana, loved your insights. The good thing about a higher quality trench is that it will last for years on end! Two brands that have stood out for trench coat quality for me personally are Talbots and Ann Taylor! I have a trench coat from Talbots that is now going on it’s 15th year! After this long I have only had to re sew one loose button! The fit is impeccable! Thank you again!
Thank you so much... I am impressed! I am French....and I appreciate the way you explain every single détail. Very professionnal. Thanks to YOU , I will go for Massimo 😉
Excellent much needed video, clearly showing the difference in quality. I've searched for the perfect trench for literally years, and never found "the one" for a petite person, like myself. I currently wear an M&S one (waterproof) and a Jack Wills shorter one, which is nicely stylish, but my dream is to own a Burberry, even a thrifted one would be acceptable and probably around £350. I liked the Unique trench best.
One thing I do not understand about trench coats and raincoats: Without a hood, how are one's head and hair supposed to stay dry and styled? Carry a big hat?
Trench coats were basically invented by Thomas Burberry during the war, and the troops used helmets which shielded their eyes from the rain. Modern versions basically expect you to carry an umbrella. Trench coats are a very early concept in fashion, so hoods/hoodies aren't normally incorporated because it isn't associated with the design
Amazing video. It is actually pretty frigging hard to find a minimally decent trench coat for a good price, but I am really happy I found one in Uniqlo. I actually had/have the exact same problem as you with the sizing (my height and body are similar to yours): XS was slightly too tight on the shoulders, S is a bit too long and baggy on the arms and the belt is very long. But I took S and I will bring it to a very good tailor that I know and he will adapt everything for 20 bucks. Even with that "extra", it was very worth it.
London fog trench coats have hoods & waterproof- all the good features. I have one in black & 1 in camel & live in Oregon where it rains basically 1/2 the year!
I got a nice London Fog trench coat on amazon at a reasonable price. A lot of influencers swear by the Drop trench coat on Amazon as well. The Lond Fog was more money but worth it. Chris
London Fog has a great trench coat with waterproof material, detachable HOOD, epaulets, nice looking buttons, chest storm flaps, ventilated back flap, wrist cinchers, waist belt that can be secured to the back with a button, neck hooks, and many other well-though out details. It's about perfect, for the same price as Uniqlo.
Hello Mariana, Thank you for the timely post. I live in Northern California where we can unfortunately go years with out needing a trench coat. The last two winters have been wet here and I have been thinking about buying a new one. I have two now and neither of them do the job properly. I really love the idea of getting a wool gabardine trench coat but those are really hard to find and an affordable pricepoint. Two brands I am considering are Everlane and Quince. I will definitely look out for the reinforced stitching on the back of the collar and a more substantial belt thanks to you. One added wrinkle here in suburban America is that we are in and out of our cars constantly and a full length trench or coat can feel cumbersome.
Would love to see 100 years of fashion 1924 to 2024 incorporating classic styles of the 50s, and how did the classics fared thru the 60s and 80s. Grace kelly, both Hepburn's and etc. Thank you
Just to add some comment: I have this Massimo Dutti trench for over a year (mine is the same model, but in a Olive/dark Green color). What I love about it is that it doesnt creases, e its quite resistent (I am not extra careful and mine still looks fresh and new despite all the intense wear) and I dont like the belt just like you reviewed it, but I just tied it in the back and its good. I dif Go on a quest when buying it and used a lot of time to look for a trench and another one that I found to be quite good was from a premium line of Mango. But I love the Green color of mine and the stiching was indeed better so MD was the winner. Cheers, Beautiful Mariana! 😘
Thanks for the Vogue article! I thoroughly enjoyed it😊 I absolutely agree that the Massimo Dutti trench coat is the best of the ones you reviewed - that colour looks great on you. Another brand to consider when looking for a trench coat is Hobbs - their trench coats are water repellent (or 'shower resistant' as they themselves say), look amazing with all the classic features, are good quality, and their prices are not insane (i.e. upper high street prices, though on the lower end - currently ab £200). I recently purchased an olive/light khaki green trench from them and the lining is nearly 60% cotton! (It's a fashion miracle!) I also know that they have other trench coats with lining made of approximately 50% viscose.
Hello, I write from Brazil and I loved the video! I would just like to add that at Zara they always have 2 or 3 options for trench coats. I bought one 5 years ago and it was definitely a great investment. It is very similar to Massimo Dutti, it has all the qualities and the price in Brazil is around $134. Perfect fabric and finish. I will use it again this winter which is almost here. Thank you for the video, super well explained! Kisses!🙏🏼🙌🏼🥰🌷🇧🇷
I still feel super lucky that I grabbed a Mango trench coat at 65% off for INR 2800 ($33) recently. It's actually 100% cotton and does have the ridges to look out for with the storm flap. I also like that it is lined. One of my best buys ever.
Thank you for such a thorough review! I love my Karen Millen trench coat. It is 100% cotton and I would say the quality (and style!) is quite good. Highly recommend! I bought mine a few seasons ago. It is a two piece which allows me to wear the top half as a cropped jacket and it is double breasted. I can wear the skirt alone as well.
Wow wow wow! Best trench coat review ever! I have a few ones (beige from The Curated, Navy from COS, and light olive from Lululemon which is the one I wear the most) I want to add a black one to my wardrobe so I think I'm going for Uniqlo - I got a rain coat by Uniqlo 4 years ago and it's still in a great shape! The Massimo Dutti coat looks great on you and I agree, this darker shade of beige suits your complexion best!
I still have 2 Burberry raincoats I bought years ago that were made in England. Nowadays, the basic line is made in China. I also have 2 Uniqlo raincoat I bought a few years ago. They are very well made. I bought both of them on sale for under $100. Unfortunately, I hardly wear rain coats any more. The weather changes from winter to summer almost overnight!
It is so hard to find a good one. I am looking for a black one, not too long, fitted ( they are so baggy nowadays) and the most important, not 100% cotton as it is too much wrinkles prone but not 100% polyester either (something with gabardine or tencel), and I just can't find one.
Thank you for this video, it was very helpful! I love trench coats, and I even wore one for 9 years. It was a classic beige trench, mixture of cotton and polyester, very comfortable and nice fit. The brand was Pimkie and the price was quite affordable. To be honest, I could've continued to wear it, but I wanted to buy something longer, with more relaxed fit.
What's annoying is that uniqlo never restocks on the sizes that sell out the most . Really don't understand why they don't just stock up more on sizes that sell out the most.
Very useful video and a great review! I am set with lighter coats this season. Wanted to recommend Club Monaco but sadly when I checked their website they no longer had a classic cut of the trench coat this season. One is a super short one, another is a baggier version in what sounds like a cheaper flimsier version. I lucked out a couple of years ago and bought a great trench coat from Club Monaco, good fabric, all the classic details and back vent, a leather bucle. I love it. Brook's Brothers has a classic trench coat and judging by description (100% cotton, made in Portugal) it is well made. It's is double the price from Massimo Dutti though. Made
I thoroughly enjoyed this video! Thank you for your attention to detail. Mango also sell a good quality trench coat. I purchased mine almost four years ago and it is still in great condition.
Thanks for the thorough review! I do think it depends on what a person is looking for in a trench - for example, I'm not a fan of the original Burberry coat (gasp!), it just looks costumey to me at this point. Instead, I prefer coats that are a little bit oversized and less structured and that have fewer details (no epaulettes or stormflaps if possible) and are a lightweight material, almost more like a duster coat. With those I also think it's fine if they don't have a lining. Of course I lose a bit of functionality then but if it's pouring outside I usually take an umbrella or an actual raincoat.
Great video! Learned so much. Recently bought a trench and happy to say all the details you mentioned are there. The price-point was higher but I purchased it on sale and am happy with it. It’s by Theory. I also have a classic vintage Burberry in black that I got second hand around 12 years ago and love it. The Massimo Dutti looks fabulous on you with the warm tone against your complexion. I have to stay away from those unfortunately because I have cool coloring, but still love Massimo for wardrobe staples like this 🫶🏻
I bought both massimo and burberry trench coats last time i went to Europe… so good. Massimo had other colours so I got a blue one. Zara has different ranges of trench coats and one I bought 10 years ago was just as good as Massimo, whichI still wear today
Love the video! I just wish that in your modeling footage you could’ve shown us the back, as that is usually where most of the trench coats failed to fit my style
As a petite woman, I'm looking for a fitted single-breasted trench coat, and I'd rather have it in navy or taupe than in the usual very light camel or beige, but so far no luck so I'm sticking to my old Jigsaw grey one and Uniqlo Ines de la Fressange collab navy one
I wish I had seen this before I bought mine but I got a great one in navy . Well made ,lining and hits right below my knee. I am also 5”2 I think it was from mango.
I have the first coat from H&M. This is a pure fashion piece. It is well structured and easy to clean and it does not crease as much as your classic trench. The length might not suit the tall girls im 5.2 and its hits me just over the knee. This price point is excellent for those you wants to wear the trend.
I bought the Massimo Dutti one and the buckle of the belt is so cheap it broke the first time I used it and I lost it of course, so I could not even repair it :(
Another very enjoyable video. Can we talk? The trench coat is always on most "must have" lists, along with a black turtleneck, white button-down blouse, a pencil skirt, dark washed jeans, etc., so I purchased one years ago. I guess I am too practical (vs. chic) and didn't want to deal with an umbrella to cover my head, in addition to my purse and shopping bags. I always would reach for my pretty but more practical hooded raincoat. So, I did away with my trench coat. Don't disown me! Am I the only one? Could you perhaps do a more current "must have" list according to Mariana in Milan? (Or if you have already done one and I missed it, pls direct me to it) Ciao bella.
😂😂😂 I totally understand where you’re coming from! Rain makes everything so complicated, doesn’t it? But I also love a trench as transitional outerwear when it’s not raining… so in lieu of a jacket, throwing one on gives a bit of variety and styling.
@@MarianaZelenjuk Ahhh, so true. So a rain jacket for rain, and a trench for cool but lovely weather. As a capsule "wardrober" the raincoat would also be used for this. Practicality won over fashion. I must be old.
Great episode. Investing in a good quality classic trench coat is really worth it. I found a beautiful trench coat by the Japanese retailer Muji several years ago ( here in the UK) just under $200. I am still wearing it! Not sure if you have Muji in the USA? I agree Massimo Dutti makes lovely and good quality design classics.
I actually own the H&M one. I bought it three or four years ago when it was still €49,-. Since I needed it only for a special occasion and knew I wouldn't wear it on a regular basis the cheapest version was good enough. I would like to add that the fabric is really heavy - I don't like it.
I bought a vintage 1970’s Burberry trench, and had it tailored to fit, total cost $600. It’s my favorite! Thanks for the detailed explanation of trenches!
Max Mara ..... My usual trench ...... But they normally cost over $2000. However, I got a super trench for $250 from Hobbs - I fell in love with the bright cornflower blue
Good info! Side note, I know you have 0 control over this but one of the ads during your video was for Shien, it made me laugh because you’re talking about finding a good quality trench and shien pops up 😂
About 10 years ago i bought an h&m Trenchcoat with a flared lower part for around 60 Dollars. Still have it, held up fine, 98% cotton. Probably hard to find such a piece today tho
Tengo 5 los compre en New Y&company hace años me salieron muy buenos bonitos y ya no he encontrado ninguno que me guste lastima que ya no existe la tienda despues de pandemia.
Thank you so much for your review. I am also of similar height and build. I hope the Uniqlo trench comes back in stock (out of stock in xs at the moment). I should have bought it as soon as the collection came out 😓
Thank you for this video. The Duti trench is beautiful but without the epaulets buttons it’s a no. Why? Just why? What were they thinking? It looks unfinished.
This was a great video, very informative. I have a vintage Burberry but I really like the look and quality of Banana Republic cotton trench coats. However, they are made far too big and overwhelm my 5'3" frame. ❤
Hi Mariana, it's my first time on your channel. I wanted to say thank you for taking the time to make this video, I very much enjoyed watching it. I also watched couple of other videos right after to determine what body type you are. My initial guess was you are Kibbe Body type Flamboyant Gamine and after watching your H&M haul of your favorite pieces for last summer, I knew I was right. The reason why you have not found the right trench coat yet is because you are looking at the designs that are made for either Dramatics, Soft Dramatic or Soft Naturals (like me) I'm Kibbe Body type Soft Naural with a classic essence and none of the trench coats you showcased in this video look good on me. They are meant for Dramatics, Soft Dramatics and Natural body types. You are Flamboyant Gamine and therefore those coats look massive on your small frame. If you are not familiar with David Kibbe, I highly recommend you watch videos about his Body Typing based on Yin/Yang balance. Aly Art, Alyssa Rudman, Merriam Style and Elyssa have made tons of video on Kibbe body typing. I will link them below for you. Also look at the 7 Style Essence to further understand how certain styles work or don't work on you. And finally I will link a web site called Sew your Kibbe. It will explain what styles of clothes look good on what body types. I hope you look into this, if you haven't already. It will open up a whole new world to you. My way of shopping and styling changed completely once I understood what works for me and what doesn't. Good Luck to you and have fun 😊😊😊 Sew your Kibbe doctortdesigns.com/wardrobe-planning/sew-your-kibbe/ Aly Art - Flamboyant Gamine - ua-cam.com/video/qaHZ9-AIzkk/v-deo.html Aly Art - Kibbe Body Type - ua-cam.com/video/hkf33PHuD-c/v-deo.html Alyssa Rudman - ua-cam.com/video/7Qlr5s2jEJw/v-deo.html Merriam Style - Trench Coats - ua-cam.com/video/5viXHjhGSxI/v-deo.html Merriam Style - what body type is this - ua-cam.com/video/b3DWznpwoeI/v-deo.html Elyssa - Intro to Essence - ua-cam.com/video/cJF3OIWfVQ8/v-deo.html
I have a Massimo Dutti French coat! In khaki. I only found it after a few fails though... I would have loved to have you😮r excellent thorough vidéo earlier❤
I have searched it for years and finaly last year I have found the right one: the Massimo Dutti one! And I am really tall 181cm but fits perfectly ( large). And it was in discount….
You didn’t mention the most important thing about the Massimi Dutti coat, what is the fabric (and lining) composition? I’ll pay a lot more for a breathable lining, even if just rayon.
I looked it up, the outer fabric is all-cotton, but the lining is polyester! Wrong way around. I just won’t buy anything lined with polyester, might as well wear plastic wrap, they have the same (non-) breathability.
I love a 'comparison' video Mariana; this was objective, concise and very honest...loved it! I guess one could always replace the buckle on the Massimo Dutti trench, as I would consider this an investment piece. I would love to see more videos like this....and please 'always' remain as honest as you are as you save a lot of people a lot of grief!!
@MarianaZelenjuk I ended up buying the Sezane Scott trench! It just arrived from France yesterday, and it smells and looks divine 😍 I'm very happy with it 😀
Very interesting, thank you! I ran to check if all the features were integrated into my trench coat 😅 and they are!! Check out the brands Esprit and Holland Cooper for stunning trenches!
I Will Never look at A Trench Coat the Same Ever Again 💛 😊
Same lol
Me too
Extremely happy with my classic one from London Fog with all the features you mentioned PLUS leather buckles, a removable hood and removable liner attached with buttons making it very versatile and button closure at the pockets, classic knee length.
The Uniqlo one really impressed me, Cristina! If you get a chance to order it to see it for yourself, I think you’ll love it 😊
You are sooo clever. I have 10 trenchcoats in my closet, but I learned so much watching your video❤ Cant wait to see more videoes😊
I bought one in Hobbs, 96 % cotton and perfect fit. I am also 159 cm, and I got the petite version. Perfect length on arms. 👍
My mom gave me her 1998 Aquascutum slim-fitting trench coat and it's incredibly gorgeous AND function very well.
Love the Uniqlo one the best, love that sand color! I have about 4 trenchcoats which I always wear traveling👍👍
Any U.S. viewers: Dillard's now has Antonio Melani clothing made with Loro Piano fabrics (top notch). The prices aren't cheap, but great for what you get.

We cannot get Massimo Dutti in Australia, but I am definitely thinking about the Uniqlo trench!

Thank you Mariana! You have really helped me in my decision to purchase a trench coat.
Great video you saved me from buying that Zara Trench coat, thank you! Will definitely buy either the Massimo or Uniqlo.
One thing I do not understand about trench coats and raincoats: Without a hood, how are one's head and hair supposed to stay dry and styled? Carry a big hat?
Really? Use an umbrella ☔️
I think that's done by cheap brands. I have in Vince Camuto, Cole Haan, Donna Karen, RL. They are all high quality and come with the hood.
Buy a rainhat

I returned my H&M trench coat. Thank you for this video.. it was on time 😊
Love the video!
What size you got from Massino Dotti ?
I wish I had seen this before I bought mine but I got a great one in navy . Well made ,lining and hits right below my knee. I am also 5”2 I think it was from mango.
I have the first coat from H&M. This is a pure fashion piece. It is well structured and easy to clean and it does not crease as much as your classic trench. The length might not suit the tall girls im 5.2 and its hits me just over the knee. This price point is excellent for those you wants to wear the trend.
If the Uniqlo trench coat had the storm flap at the back, I would buy it. It doesn't seem quite right without it.
Massimo dutti es la más elegante ❤
Ciao, che bella recensione, complimenti, adoro i trench coat anche se preferisco i "vecchi" impermeabili in nylon anni '60.
Id love to see a Spring must haves video too
@@MarianaZelenjuk Ahhh, so true. So a rain jacket for rain, and a trench for cool but lovely weather. As a capsule "wardrober" the raincoat would also be used for this. Practicality won over fashion. I must be old.
COS ha a hooded trench this season
Love this trench coat review ❤ I wish I had seen this before I bought one 😂
another video like this with the sezane scott trench 🙏🏼
I bought a vintage 1970’s Burberry trench, and had it tailored to fit, total cost $600. It’s my favorite!
Thanks for the detailed explanation of trenches!
I found a Burberry trenchcoat in a thrift store years ago for about $25.
@@americafirst9144wow that’s amazing .
very nice informative video
what size did you get for massimo x
Hallo Mariana
Try London fog 3/4 length trench coat so nice 👍
This video is such a good one that I still refer to til this day! I was wondering what size did you get because I’m petite also? (Just under 5ft)
If I’m not mistaken they’re all Small! I’d size down for Uniqlo, though 😉
Max Mara ..... My usual trench ...... But they normally cost over $2000. However, I got a super trench for $250 from Hobbs - I fell in love with the bright cornflower blue
FYI, those parallel, multiple lines or stitching are called trapunto stitching.
Trapunto is a quilting technique made to make puffy areas stand out. This is flat topstitching.
Loooooved your video. Thank you! 🙏❤️
Good info! Side note, I know you have 0 control over this but one of the ads during your video was for Shien, it made me laugh because you’re talking about finding a good quality trench and shien pops up 😂
Great video and super helpful!! I was looking for a trench coat, and after watching this ordered the Massimo Dutti! 😀
I should have bought it as soon as the collection came out 😓
I think they will keep it in their permanent line (hopefully!)... it's such a stunner!
Good Luck to you and have fun 😊😊😊

I have a Massimo Dutti French coat! In khaki. I only found it after a few fails though... I would have loved to have you😮r excellent thorough vidéo earlier❤
Great video, thanks Mariana, can you check out a Gap trench soon?
Great video! Thank you. What size did you get in Massimo dutti?
A Small 😉
I Have a very nice trench coat but I gain weight then it becomes to tight, I want to look for a new one and this video is just in time, thanks alot
Dá uma olhada e vê como se amarra um trench. Vc dá um nó no cinto e não usa a fivela.
Tirando isso, o conteúdo do seu vídeo foi ótimo .👏👏👏👏
hi there, what do you think about the mujii one? thanks
Sezane’s one is very popular among the fashion influencers. Maybe worth trying it?😉
As if I needed another excuse to shop at Sezane 😂
@MarianaZelenjuk I ended up buying the Sezane Scott trench! It just arrived from France yesterday, and it smells and looks divine 😍 I'm very happy with it 😀
Very interesting, thank you! I ran to check if all the features were integrated into my trench coat 😅 and they are!!
Check out the brands Esprit and Holland Cooper for stunning trenches!
