If you want to read a sort of in depth explanation on their relationship, go ahead and read this :P i recommend it even if you don't ship them, just to try understanding what went on during everything, or don't. It is pretty long, but its a more organized version of my freak outs I sent to kasia while playing sdr2 Lol. At the start of the game, Nagito stayed with Hajime after he passed out, when nobody else did, and they easily became friends. Hajime mentioned he felt calm/safe around him, and Nagito said that he found the two of them alike. Hajime was basically like. The only friend he's ever had. After the first trial, their friendship pretty much roughens. alot, for obvious reasons. I'm not exactly sure at what point, but Nagito did fall in love with him. In the manga he directly says "I love you", in the japanese version of the game he cuts himself off mid way, with the english one being mistranslated. The CD version being : "But I won't give up. I'll do anything in my power to assist you. Because..... I like you. I love you, for being willing to talk to me like this, even after knowing what a hopelessly incompetent person I am...." To which Hajime says: "Don't get me wrong... I'm just, scared. Scared of not being able to understand you, and leaving it like that." It's not that Hajime hates him, it's just that he doesn't know what to do. ( he makes up for this later lol ) Earlier in the free time event, Nagito begins to tell Hajime why he acts the way he does, luck cycle, his parents, blaming himself for everything, his illness which is supposed to have killed him by now ( and is the reason he acts so strange, it changes the part of the brain responsible for socialising, so he doesn't really get when things are unacceptable to say, ect. ) , and how much he's scared to die without being loved. "Now that I'm on the verge of death, I finally realize what i've wanted all along... Somebody's love...." "Please, Don't forget. I love you from the bottom of my heart. " And as soon as Hajime was about to consider forgiving him, he said it was all a lie, and he read it from a book; because he can't let Hajime get close to him. People close to him always get hurt or in some scenarios die, and he's literally in love with the man, so he chooses not to be selfish. He can't let himself be selfish. Chapter 3, Nagito falls ill of the despair disease, his in particular making him lie. This is pretty much self explanatory. "Go away. I can't stand being in the same room as you." even saying he hates him a bunch of times. He's basically asking Hajime to stay with him and that he loves him but Hajime is an ACTUAL IDIOT AND COULDN'T TELL. himbo moment, everybody.!!!! At that moment, Nagito genuinely thought he'd die. He's already sick with another very deadly disease. and back to his fear of dying unloved- it was. Very harsh. and sad. And hajime is very very stupid for not realizing. Another favorite line of mine in reference to Nagito is from Mikans meltdown in the same chapter:"Love.... you don't understand? Is it because you don't have anybody to love..?"and OUCH did that hurt, my god Mikan LOL. Chapter 4 is EASILY where most people misunderstand their relationship, and in general Nagito's mindset. In the funhouse, Nagito completes the final dead room with russian roulette, pulls the trigger, and finds out that every single one of his classmates were a part of the ultimate despair, including the fact that Hajime is talentless. and MAN. does it hit him like an absolute fucking brick. The man he's in love with basically goes against EVERYTHING he's ever lived for. He sees himself only worthy to help the ultimates, and see's those without them as, well, trash. And Hajime was exactly that, (Irony, but just wait for the double irony.) After learning he was a reserve course student, Nagito became hostile to him , seemingly projecting the traits he hates about himself onto Hajime. People misunderstand this part HUGELY. He did not hate Hajime because he was talentless. Nagito even said at the start that he took a liking to him because he felt like a bystander, like himself. He became harsh to EVERYONE in the cast after figuring out they were a part of despair, picking at them for everything he could think of. He insulted every single student, and Hajime was obviously included in this. So now, his whole mindset comes crashing down on him, how fun. Right before the trial if you talk to him, he says;"I know you don't matter... so why do I still care about you?" And here we have a very very conflicted mf who is still in love with Hajime and does not know what the hell to do about it. After this trial, Nagito begins to set up his suicide, if you try talking to him during this ; "I'm happy you're asking someone like me but... I still have things I need to do. So don't worry about me, okay? Go have fun with everyone else." And when they discover his body, we find out what "things" meant. Nagito died slowly and painfully, inhaling poison and stabbing himself, knowing that his biggest fear would come true. But it isn't all a sob story, I don't think he died in vain.This trial confuses the HELL out of me, but I am a very firm believer that he wanted Hajime and the others to solve it. First things first, he said he knew Hajime couldn't be the traitor due to his lack of talent, and just didn't really believe it, which meant his plan was gonna fall down on somebody else. We can agree that Nagito is the smartest person on the island, from him solving chapters 3 and 4, and giving SO many useful tips to Hajime during the trial, bringing up topics during trials to skew the conversation in the correct direction, or bringing up things to clear innocence, to even solving who the murderer was before everyone else. Considering how smart he is, there was 0 reason for him to leave all the evidence in his room, in the most OBVIOUS places. He literally wanted Hajime and Chiaki to find it. He is not so stupid to just leave the most trival evidence of the case in his goddamn room, not even hiding them. He wanted the death and reveal of the traitor to bring such despair, that his luck cycle would kick in and bring a hope great enough to let everyone else escape, and the very next trial, that is exactly what happened, to go through all that awful pain was very very selfless of him and I love him a lot for that. "I believe that hope will overcome the greatest despair, and I will offer my pulsating heart for the sake of that . I'll tear my chest apart, until the very last drop trickles down my lips and kills me." ( roughly translated lyrics from his song, poison :p ) During this trial Hajime begins to understand Nagito's thought process, albeit too late. My favorite part is the irony of everything though, Nagito falls in love with someone, but can't let himself get close in fear of hurting him. He's selfless, said person ends up being talentless and part of the ultimate despair, and he STILL loves him but doesn't understand why, and the double irony is that he fell in love with him twice, Izuru. Izuru is the exact definition of what Nagito believes to be the most worthy person. The best at everything, the most talented and smart person to exist. And when Izuru's luck went against Nagito's luck, he well, you know, blushed and passed out of sheer idolization. Someone that without a doubt he'd do absolutely anything for. Yet Nagito STILL picks Hajime over him. Hajime spent what we can assume is a long time to wake Nagito from his coma, since he was the last to wake, and when he does, he sees the person in front of him as Hajime, Not izuru. He literally picked him over the ideal of everything he's ever lived for. He didn't fall in love with Hajime for his talent or anything. He just fell in love with him. "I love and want to understand him more than anyone else."( from the song poison, again !!! ) In the ova, it goes back to him just yearning to have friends. All he truly wants is to have connections with people, and in this coma in his brain, he can. And it's so so sweet and sad :( When the AI spoke to Nagito on the phone after, like literally shooting his (fake) friends in the coma world, Hajime's voice set off flashbacks to the killing game. 1- The island, 2- His death, 3- Hajime's smile. ( really. REALLY. YOU HAD TO DO THAT) The reason he was in a coma in the first place was because his experiences were so traumatizing. It's also speculated that Hajime wasn't in his coma world because his feelings toward him were too strong, and Chiaki wasn't in it because the feeling of sadness of losing her at hope's peak was too great. Later on he accepts to go back to the real world, breaking out of his coma, shooting himself, and boom. Hajime wakes him up with a smile, and they clearly are past all the awful things that happened. They forgive each other. :) Hajime continues to make an effort to understand him and be his friend, and the students treat him better, him even giving Fuyuhiko and Kazuichi a hug, saying how much he missed them. GOD i'm so glad he has friends now you don't get it lol. And in that scene, Hajime reaches for his ( now robotic ) hand, red contrasting the blue of the scene where he awoke with Junko's hand. Again you can only assume that Hajime made the arm, with the whole nerve robotic thing, probably with Mikan and Kazuichi helping. Another thing I noticed about this scene is how its lined up, which is basically with Peko waiting for Fuyuhiko, and Sonia waiting for Kazuichi, which are both of those boy's love interests, and then Nagito with Hajime, they had literally no reason for putting specifically Sonia and Peko there, but I doubt it was a mistake. Anyway, they both forgave each other and are close friends and minimum, even with that official art with the pink hearts and stuff, I think it's more than safe to say that Nagito is still in love with him, even with that scene where Hajime was talking to some ghost? of Chiaki, and Nagito calling him back to go eat with everyone, and Chiaki disappearing, who knows, maybe he'll move on :P One sided or not , GOD ARE THEY INTERESTING, there's still a lot I didn't go into full detail for, but I'm so happy Nagito got his happy ending, Hajime's luck will probably balance his out, allowing him to live normally :D

The fandom honestly over-sexualized this ship, and I’m happy you understood the true meaning. The OVA made me cry, and just when these actual edits that are supposed to show off the true dynamic of the ship are made, it makes me so happy. I love how it says "but now you're just somebody that I used to know" at Kamakura, especially since in Nagito's eyes, Kamakura is genetically perfect, yet he chooses Hajime instead, and decides that Kamakura isn't as important
