    Hi Chris. Thank you for the info. I am 67 and looking at exactly what you have described. Going to be using the tool so I'm sure your video has short cut a lit of anguish

      Thanks for watching and comment. Hi I am sharing what I’ve learned from buying many hand planes just for my own personal curiosity and wanting to try them all. Thought this video would help others looking to buy used and explain things to look for and find a good plane to use.👍

    Very in depth, great video. It seems I have the exact same version as you got as an apprentice. Made in England, plastic handles but brass adjuster and cast y piece. It’s a good user that I’ve been working with for several years. Only thing I did was replace the blade with a Veritas one that stays sharp much longer.

      @@michael.knight Thanks for watching and comment. Hi did the Veritas blade fit straight in or did you have to make adjustments ? . I have a few people asking me about fitting different brands of blade . I’ve found on most Stanley planes the Y piece is too short for a thicker blade but most Records planes are okay. How did yours work out ?. 👍

      @@chrisfinn1162 It only just fits, you can really only do fine smoothing with it, any thicker cut and it will be in the way and you'd need to file the mouth. But I think the Veritas blade is not as thick as some alternatives (like Ron Hock or LN possibly?). As to the Y piece, it's flush with the chipbreaker, so fits perfectly.

    Thanks for the advice. I'm so close to giving up on second hand vintage planes. Where I live it is rare to find them locally so I am mostly restricted to online purchases and so far have been unlucky. A Bailey #4 1/2 type 19 and a USA #6 type 15 and both have had crappy paint jobs to cover the japaning and both done by people who didn't even mask up the frog bedding areas. Not to mention the #4 1/2 also has a warped frog blade bedding surface which is proving difficult to flatten. I don't mind putting in some work to flatten a sole but to have to try to clean up this paint so my frogs actually bed tight is painful.
    I'm going to be probably just buy a brand new Clifton #5 1/2 and get on with life 😂

      Thanks for watching and comment. Sorry to hear you’re having trouble with old planes. There are a lot of flippers on eBay who buy the cheapest. Tidy them up to look sort of okay then resell. Making them worse for those that know what they’re doing to restore. I find it’s safer to buy the ones that are taken apart and photographed so you can see what’s been messed with. If they’re cheap with only a few photographs then it can be worth a gamble.👍

    Fantastic informative video, Thanks so much for taking the time to film and share this. You are lucky to be based in the UK and still able to pick up bargains on ebay. Being in Ireland if I buy something on ebay now for £30 it will cost close to £60 by the time it arrives at my door due to International shipping charges and import fees.

    Chris, thanks for the informative review. I just purchased an old 🇨🇦 Stanley for $100.00 🇨🇦 with a grooved sole and fine knurled adjuster (1945 - ‘47) off e-bay. I’ll know in a few days if it was a mistake or not. You have several nice looking planes , looks like you have gone the “rabbit hole” on that one. At 76, I have to keep my collection shorter. I am safer buying new Veritas.

      Thanks for watching and comment. I do have a problem when I get interested in something I have to take it to the max never half measure . What surprised me was when I took them out for the video no two were the same. I kind of thought there would have been duplicates. Just shows how many variations there are. Good luck with your purchase I think it will be fine.👍

    Hello Chris nice video. Regarding the blades just how much material can be taken off if a blade is heavily pitted. I have some of the 4 1/2 blades but they're quite heavily pitted and I would like to remove all the pitting. Thanks

    • @chrisfinn1162
      @chrisfinn1162  9 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching and comment. Most plane blades are 2mm thick some are 3mm I would think 1 3/4 mm would be the thinnest viable blade. From what I can find standard 4 1/2 blades are not available new in the uk . Thicker aftermarket blades are most of the time these will fit okay but occasionally the y piece is a little short and the mouth might need opening up a little you will only know if you try one. There are aftermarket y pieces that are made to compensate for this. Otherwise a second hand blade is the only option.👍

      Thanks for taking the time to reply, I have been buying cheap planes when I find them and slowly doing them up. A lot of figuring out what finish works for what part and the blades are often quite annoying as they are pitted.

    What is the best glue for gluing external red meranti window mortice joints please ?

    • @chrisfinn1162
      @chrisfinn1162  5 місяців тому

      @@DRJMF1 Thanks for watching and comment. I would say it depends on the size and complexity of the window. If you can get it assembled quickly one of the slower setting PU Foam glues in the mastic gun type tubes are very effective and provide a good resistance to water ingress. Don’t try to clean any excess glue off until it’s cured it will clean off easily. If you spread it around when wet it’s very difficult to remove. If it’s going to take a while to assemble use a good quality water proof or resistant PVA and clean any excess off with a damp cloth and old chisel. If you let it dry on the surface you might not notice it,but if the window is stained or varnished it will show later. Hope this helps. 👍

    Any tips for buying a scrub plane please ? Which is best ?

    • @chrisfinn1162
      @chrisfinn1162  5 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching and comment. I don’t own a Scrub plane and have never used one, I don’t plane much timber up by hand. If I needed one I would probably use a Record no 4 1/2 and modify it. The older one with the fully machined face on the frog have a good weight and are solid. You can buy an aftermarket thicker blade these fit better in the Record than the Stanley because they tend to have a longer Y piece. 👍

    Or can I buy a good scrub plane from you with 1/8 inch thick blade in good working order ?
