    My goodness Captain Zac, you just created the gold standard for salt water salmon fishing information not only for southeast Alaska, but anywhere on the west coast for that matter. Congratulations on your herculean effort! As far as table fare, I agree, they're called Kings for a reason.

I'm 100% with you on the kings - in fact, I'm about to pull some out of my smoker right now (including some white king!). Thanks again for the positive comment and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

      Sock eye salmon will put Chinook salmon anytime either smoked ,bbq,or baked. Sockeye is the best salmon.

    Thank You again and again for all you do and the countless hours you put into your gear, videos and work to help others enjoy this great sport and part of the world we love so much. I've been guiding and taking guests to this area of Alaska for it's beauty, fishing and checking of bucket lists. Learned things I didn't know watching your video this morning.
    I can catch halibut most all day but I'm excited and waiting on the edge of my seat for a video on drift fishing for them.

    Captain, I learned more in this one video than I have learned in 100 others. You provided a master class. The detail you provided is amazing and missing from all the other videos I have watched. It is also what is needed to actually use the knowledge you have passed on. Also learned what I have been doing wrong for the last 5 years. Annual trip to Sitka starts Sunday. Thanks for giving me a great lesson on how to improve my catch. Liked and subscribed..you have a fan from Florida......

  • @whiskeyoscarlimafox
    @whiskeyoscarlimafox 10 місяців тому +1

    One thing I’ve wondered about and haven’t heard you talk about in your videos is about boat handling when playing the fish and landing it. I see you manipulating the wheel and kicker throttle but rarely comment on why you are making adjustments. Is there a strategy to use the boat to keep the fish behind you? Thanks for making these. Tight lines!

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  9 місяців тому

      Hey @whiskeyoscarlimafox thanks for watching and I'm glad you found this tips video helpful! Great suggestion - I'll aim to cover this in a future video. The two biggest factors I consider when using the kicker during a salmon battle are keeping steady pressure on the fish (to help avoid a slacked line and thrown hook) and to keep the fish situated in a good spot for netting (away from the engine but within reach of the netter on the rear transom or back corner of the boat). Sometimes this requires improvising on the fly since salmon can run all over the place - at the boat, under the boat, etc. Does this make sense? Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

    How often do you put the scent on the hoochies?

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  8 місяців тому

      Hi @carlkoch6460 thanks for stopping by! Fairly often - adding a dot of scent to a hootchie is really a "no regrets move" that can help give you a small advantage, especially when the bite is slow. When the bite is hot, they'll hit almost anything and the scent probably plays less of a determiner of a strike. Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac

    I'd like to Respectfully disagree with you, on Sockeye not being "Catchable" based on the fact that, they're Plankton feeders. I'm in no way, attempting to accuse you as one who would attempt to catch them Unlawfully!! Not only anadromous Sockeye are Catchable on Small lures and flies, but even their landlocked relatives (Kokanee), are easily caught (without Snagging), by trolling Small lures!! I'm a retired Fish Pathologist from Oregon, and have caught Sockeye as well as 3 other Pacific Salmon (Pinks are very rare in Oregon), and Steelhead, with great success since 1973 !! Again the "Plankton-Feeding" concept, has been used as an excuse for Unlawful foul hooking of Sockeye!! Even the anadromous Sockeye Jacks are quite Catchable on flies. Every single Shad season, I Catch Sockeye Jacks on a piece of Yarn under an egg-loop!!

      Hi @snagrbuster7343 thanks for the thoughtful comment - I'm always interested to learn more about salmon (especially those that I don't primarily target). I believe I'm on safe ground to suggest that the primary way of catching sockeyes in Alaska is either netting (commercial gill nets or cast/dip nets) or flossing in streams/rivers. Fish Alaska Magazine suggests that "Sockeye salmon fishing can be challenging for anglers new to the activity. The predominant technique for catching this species is by flossing them."

      It sounds like there are other techniques besides flossing that can produce fish as well (like the yarn and egg loop you suggest!). Every so often a sockeye will actually hit a hootchie behind a flasher but that is pretty rare!
      Thanks again for the insightful comment - tight lines!
      Captain Zac

    I have found with Pinks if you bonk them, bleed them, and ice them immediately your average fish eater doesn't even know they are eating a Pink that is supposedly less desirable. I give a lot of them away to friends and neighbors and have eaten some myself. It's really about how the meat is cared for. On Pink years I set up guests on my boat with Pink gear because they get plenty of action and have fun. They are great fighters for their size. I usually hold out for the Cohos with Coho gear. Of course during Chinook season the Pinks aren't even there so it's all Chinook gear.

      Hi Captain Mike great to hear from you and I'm glad you enjoyed these salmon tips! Yes indeed - Pinks can certainly be good to eat especially if you take care of the meat and avoid late spawn cycle fish. I agree pinks can provide a lot of action and fun out on the water! Given the abundance of salmon up here, I generally stick to king salmon (whole meat and smoked) and cohos (smoked) in terms of eating. Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac

      I found pinks to be OK if cooked fresh. If they’re frozen - the flesh will be mushy when thawed!
