- Late June ascent of Big Snow Mountain in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. We see loads of beautiful scenery while chasing down this remote Smoot Peak along the Middle Fork Snoqualmie River. With the aid of RAD e-bikes, we opt for the Hardscrabble Route and zip down the decommissioned Middle Fork Road. Last time I was up Dingford Creek trail (20 years ago), on a hike with my daughter who was 12 at the time, we stopped the car about five miles down the road from the trailhead on the way out, to walk down to the Middle Fork on a muddy road made by 4-wheelers. I was looking ahead through the trees and saw a bear out in the river, 50 yards ahead. I gasped "There's a bear!" but my daughter saw me looking across the road at her and assumed I was looking in the thick bushes behind her, so she thought the bear was 15 feet away. She almost had a heart attack, poor kid. The bear never heard us as the river's rapids made too much noise and it continued walking down the river, away from us.
That's a great memory, thanks for sharing! Ryan always hikes in with his extended zoom lens on his camera with hopes of sighting a bear. I'd count you lucky! Though your daughter likely would disagree 🤣
Is there an alltrails link for this? I tried search for Big Snow and Hardscabble but nothing came up. If not alltrails, is there a GPX track?
