      Hello, thanks for your comment. We are already amazed with the speed these products are evolving. Seeing a group of students make a bike with a 250-mile range is just spectacular. Can you imagine what will happen if companies start pouring more money into the development?

      Only good thing? noise reduction, torque, smooth ride come to mind. Harley is in big trouble. They have an e-bike, but it makes noise for no good reason because they think that appeals to the fat old farts riding Harleys. Those guys will either never go electric or go in all the way. No one needs a motorcycle to make a stupid noise just to make noise.

    I think they need to have the gear shifter as the 'regen' selector. I suspect it might be quite intuitive. First 'gear' lots of engine braking, around town ...and 'top gear' coasts along on the highway, with very little 'engine braking. And have the rear brake as left hand lever, where by there's far more feel.

    I commute 70 miles round trip on my bike. I've considered getting an electric as an additional bike but with the current ranges their only good for commuting. I'd have to plug it in every day to make it back and forth the next day. Sure there are charging stations along the way (sort of) but who wants to have to wait for it to charge when you're trying to get home after a long day at work? You can forget going on a cruise or a ride out in the hill country away from the city. My bike gets up to 200 miles a tank and I typically don't have to fill up as often as some of the other liter bikes in our group but there's no way I could take an electric bike on one of those rides (typically 200-300 miles in a day with a stop for lunch out in the boonies). I think the Energica Ego is the closest so far to what I'd consider, the price has come down considerably since they first came out as well but the range still prohibits those weekend cruises or bike night rides...

      Hello, thanks for your feedback. Electric transport is still some time away from being able to handle long commutes. Though it's good to see that the range has passed 200 miles for some models. Unlike with electric cars, where the range problem could be solved with a larger pack, motorcycles have a limited amount of space.

      Your comments reflect my thinking. A electric motorcycle needs 300 km (180 mile) to the charge and a re-charge time of about an hour so you can get it done while having a meal. Only electric MTB or trials bikes can justify shorter range but they are generally as expensive as a motorcycle. Otherwise maybe electric scooters for commuting but I have no interest.
      We are going to see many start-ups going to the wall before the travel range and cost makes sense. Most of the electric motorcycles look like crap anyway so I am not holding my breath.

    • @Datacube
      @Datacube  6 років тому

      Some MTB or trial bikes have swappable batteries because they are aiming for lower weight. Every motorcycle has it's main purpose, so the range, speed and weight are calibrated according to the purpose of the bike.

      While my job (General Motors plant) actually has charging stations, they only allow GM brand vehicles to park in them and while the motorcycle parking is really close to my office, they would likely frown on me running an extension cord through the chain link fence to my bike... :( So charging at home is really my only viable option at this time.
      I see that the Zero SR 14.4 + power tank shows a 112 mile range @70mph, my route to work is all highway with a 70mph limit, I tend to ride at around 80mph and am curious as to how much that would affect my range in addition to power consumption at the 102mph limit which I'm not a fan of. That kind of range would likely alleviate any range anxiety but at a cost of over $20K after taxes. I also wish they offered a sport bike.
      Energica has a naked and sport bike as well as a naked with a lower range/smaller motor. They state the ranges on the bigger ones to be 125 miles but don't indicate at what speeds (likely city driving) and thus the highway range may not cut it, but with a limited top end of 125mph (naked) and 150mph (sport) and a 0-60 of 3 seconds the performance is much closer to my gas guzzler. I like the styling much better as well although the $26.5K starting price is a little pricey considering the range.
      It will likely be awhile until I buy into the electric motorcycle market.

    In my opinion range is the only real problem that electricity has, because when you reach the end of that range(should you need to ride the full length) you have to wait and wait and wait(full charges on quick charging seem to take hours on average) where as with a gas engine you just fill back up.... The answer is simple, perhaps hard to apply but very simple in theory. Removable batterys. If the source of the power can fit in a back pack, saddle bag, or trunk attachment, you can now travel twice as far, if the bike can run a small alternator, you can charge the spare while riding the other.... The problem is range, the answer is to use the riders space effiecently

    • @Datacube
      @Datacube  6 років тому

      Hello there. It all depends on the bike that we are talking about. There are newcomers that have over 200 miles of range. We can't imagine someone needing more range for a motorcycle. We also liked your other suggestions however, where are we going to fit all of this: extra batteries, gas range extender, etc? We are currently making a video about other electric motorcycles and one of them does have a swappable battery pack. As you can imagine, it's huge. So we believe that fast charging is the only solution, we need more level 2 charging stations, as there are batteries already that can restore 80% of juice in less than an hour.

      @@Datacube I have a Suzuki vstrom1000. That goes to Alaska every year. Besides name one gas bike that can only go 150 miles on a tankful. Also it only 3 minutes to refill. Don't get me wrong. I like the idea of an electric bike. But right now it's just a novelty

    • @Datacube
      @Datacube  6 років тому

      It does take you 3 minutes to refill, there is no doubt in that, still you can only fill up at a designated place. Gas is not always available, especially if you end up stranded between the stations. There are no universal solutions here. Also we don't think of a scenario where anyone would need more than 150 miles of range on an electric motorcycle. They are made for a different purpose and taking them on long trips is something that doesn't make much sense. As one of the viewers stated in the comment, most riders don't go more than 30 miles a day and we partially agree with that. Electric vehicles show their best in city environments and in places, where short trips are required. We would also like to take a look at the typical cost to recharge the the official website of Zero S. With such savings, many riders would cope with the 150 miles on a range (especially in countries with higher gas prices.)

    I would also say Zero are pulling away from all the others due to their ability to offer options ie long range short range.
    Price is as always a big issue with buying American bikes though, which is a shame as they can produce some really good bikes.
    Tacita T-Cruise bike
    Nice but again has issues, ignition key in the wrong place easily damaged broken off and potentially lost if it falls out awkward.
    They should also have something covering the cables going in and out of the motor as over time I suspect the cables will leak water especially if the bike is ridden in rain a lot.
    The price again is high when you want a decent battery fitted.

    • @Datacube
      @Datacube  6 років тому

      Like with Zero, we liked that Tacita offers 3 different battery back options. It sounds like some basic customization, still could attract more riders to electric power.

    • @flitsies
      @flitsies 6 років тому

      Yes Tacita could, I rather liked what they were doing the only real down side to what they had was this.
      The items I mentioned before ie key location and covering for the cables, but their biggest problem is price.
      Because it's made in Europe the bike is expensive, or because they make so few the bike is expensive, it could be a part of both reasons, but the bike is expensive once you start looking at getting a decent size battery on it.
      I get that the batteries are expensive, but the battery is the one part of a motorcycle the makers don't have to develop they just put them together to produce a power pack.
      So really all they are doing with the battery is fitting them into the space that is available which should mean as they are not developing the battery and only putting it together should make it more competitive in pricing.
      When I build a battery pack, it costs me next to nothing compared to buying a pack already made for me, so if they are simply building the packs to fit a certain size there is no reason the price couldn't drop to reflect the fact that they are only putting it together and not developing it.
      But the price doesn't in fact you would think at that price they actually manufacture the cells.

    • @evzone9837
      @evzone9837 6 років тому

      I understand that you have an ebike and should know better, still I don't get it why anyone would still ask for more range. Even not ask, demand. Bigger batteries weigh more and I never ride for more than 60 miles in the city. It applies to all electrics. I just watched a video from 3rd world countries that buy used leafs, Teslas, etc, just to fix them up and save on fuel. They don't care about the detleted range and somehow live with a leaf's 60 mile range. It's the matter of accessible fast charging, not the bigger battery, don't you think so?

    • @flitsies
      @flitsies 6 років тому

      EV zone
      Fast charging would be good, but it's not the whole answer for motorcycles.
      Here's the problem with this: fast charging takes what 2 perhaps 3 hours then you can go let's say 60 miles. So within a couple hours your bike is flat dead again, you can't go for a ride out with it and well let's just say the limits are idiotic.
      To address your point about 3rd world countries, the reason why they can get on with these vehicles most cars not motorcycles is because most of them live on the ground level, may have solar panels fitted and drive really slow most of the time due to poor road surfaces.
      So many prefer a petrol motorcycle over a car for most things except when having to deal with a whole family to carry.
      So to put it in a nutshell and explain why range is a big issue with electric motorcycles unlike cars.
      As I said before, motorcyclists don't use their vehicles like car drivers do, we ride stop short time ride more and more short stops throughout the day or week, unless commuting.
      We enjoy our ride we don't do it cos we have to, we often do it cos it makes more sense than taking the car, many of us also drive cars.
      Companies like Honda worked this stuff out, an average of 140 miles, they can fit larger tanks no problem, even when they make more efficient motorcycles they still reduce the size of the tank to average 140 miles or there about, around town on a run it tends to extend to around 260 miles or there about.
      So now we have electric motorcycles but with stupid ranges of around 50 miles and very few people are buying them, those that do often are not normal bikers, however if you look at what Zero has done they have recognised the need for better range, which means their bikes are more likely to appeal to a biker than any of the others, but price is a big issue.
      I better stop here as this posting is getting rather long.

      What you say depends on which country you live in and what part of that country you live in.
      I live in London, and some parts have great charging facilities but if you live in a part of London that has absolutely no charging facilities within walking distance it becomes a real pain in the ass.
      As I said I own a victrix, I would need to walk around two miles to the nearest charger and then it would cost me a fortune in charge time as the batteries on a victrix are slow to charge, so instead of that I use my gasoline motorcycle which I also have a fair distance to travel to get gasoline but it takes me around 5 minutes to refuel and I don't have walk two miles to get my bike once refueled.
      To tie it in with the other post.
      That bike does 140/160 to a tank of fuel around town but on a run does around 260/80 to a tank of fuel depending on how hard I ride it.
      So you see the importance of a reasonable range.
      On top of that the bike cost new less than 7 grand, can go 130 plus mph and is so reliable starts first time every time, and even to replace it today I could get an equally good motorcycle new off the shelf with extras for less than 7 grand which will do pretty much the same, but with greater range but less speed, depending on what I needed.
      So you see the problem with these electric bikes is 1/ range is pretty much always crap.
      2/ lack of charging ability.
      3/ time it takes to charge.
      4/ they never seem to have fairings.
      5/ price is ridiculously high for what you are getting.
      6/ too much innovation not enough presentation.
      7/ reliability over time untested.
      But even with all these failures, many people like myself would buy an electric motorcycle if three of these things could be addressed.
      those three are 2/ lack of charging and 3/ time it takes to charge, and 5/ price for a reasonable range.
      I bought my victrix to see just how difficult it would be for me to run an electric motorcycle I couldn't charge in my home, and it's impossible, simply put impossible.

      How fast is your charging speed? Britain needs something like Tesla supercharging. Even if it did, I doubt that anyone but Elon musk could make such advanced tech. Are there any electronic bike manufacturers in the UK? Would be sad to see America being on top here.

    • @flitsies
      @flitsies 6 років тому

      EV zone
      I think basically it comes down to this, the UK govt makes a lot of noise, they also put in a lot of rules and regulations including lots of ways to make you pay more for driving vehicles that pollute, but here's the rub, they are good at taking our money but useless at helping to promote innovation.
      Hell even small EVs have to be registered as motorcycles, so we have small kick scooters with a 250 watt motor must be registered as a motorcycle which means it will cost you insurance Mots but you do get free road tax oddly enough the cheapest part of any vehicle to use on the road.
      Technically even a child's electric scooter with a 100 watts motor is illegal in the UK unless registered as a motorcycle.
      So when it comes to charging, unless you can take the vehicle in your house or you live on the ground floor or are lucky enough to live near a charger you are pretty much screwed, everywhere has yellow or red lines so you can't simply pull up and charge anywhere you will get a ticket.

    Ok obviously Evoke is the best but still not enough range to make it viable, White ghost is a close follower to Evoke again a potentially good bike but range is poor and why would you want traction control on a bike? Unnecessary expense, this kind of thing is best left for super large motorcycles due to their weight not a small motorcycle that runs on batteries.

    • @Datacube
      @Datacube  6 років тому

      Hello, thanks for your feedback. They all run on batteries and it's only the matter of the battery size. Besides the range, we'd love to have as much features as possible. Like one tech blogger says, the more features - the better. If the company decides to drop some feature, it doesn't meant that they would drop the price. You keep mentioning the range, how much would you need the bike to have to make it "viable?"

    • @flitsies
      @flitsies 6 років тому

      A bike has to go at least 140 miles with a little left over for finding charging or in the case of a gasoline bike fuel.
      A gasoline bike on a run will do over 200 miles to a tank, so on a run I would expect at least 140 miles to a charge with a little left over for finding charge.
      Anything less and you need home charging or battery swap, but even with 140 miles you would still need fast charging to make it viable.
      Motorcycles are not like cars, you ride jump off park up for a short time then ride more park up and so on, cars tend to drive get there park up for a long time then move on as they are usually shopping or taking in movie or whatever, bikes are riding often just for the fun of riding, so are used quite a bit differently to a car, unless it's a commuter in which case the bike would park up all day and plenty of time for charging.
      You take a bike on a run you may stop off two or three times but only for a short time, 20 minutes here 30 minutes there but you wouldn't generally park up for two or three hours and especially not in the rain.
      So as I said a minimum of 140 miles should be standard for all bikes with a little left over for finding charge.
      My old bikes used to do pretty much that 140 miles to a tank at around 45 miles to the gallon, on a run it would be a bit more, but you always expected no less that 140 to a tank.

      Our sincere apologies, we forgot to reply on time. We are working on new videos right now and found several smaller bikes and scooters that have removable and modular battery packs meaning that your bike has a core built in pack that cannot be removed, while other slots can be filled with optional battery packs. Several Asian countries are starting to test the battery sharing technology. So you come to the station, drop empty packs and pick up the charged ones. How would you describe the future of this approach?
      We still think that fast charging is the key. If they could lower the charging time from 3 hours to 30 minutes, electric vehicles will start getting more fans.

    • @flitsies
      @flitsies 6 років тому

      Ok on the idea of battery swap I see one huge problem, when you buy a bike you pay for or rent your battery, if you rent the battery that's fine but in some countries renting a battery is off putting just look what happened to the twizy, nice machine very few sales, once they went over to selling the battery it was too late they lost people's interest.
      So here is the problem, you buy your bike you buy your battery, you go to the station with your brand new battery to swap it out and in return for your brand new battery you end up with something that is old and not exactly the same level as your brand new battery, now you go back to another station and you guessed it more old batteries, while someone else is running around with your nice brand new battery.

    • @flitsies
      @flitsies 6 років тому

      Not only that making sure all the batteries are fully charged may become an issue if the service becomes popular.
      By far the best solution is to have a removable battery yes, but have the battery so it can be extended in range by purchasing extra modules, even a back pack module bag could be produced, or a fairing module holder.
      There are many ways to extend a bikes range by added extra battery packs, but the thing that needs to be addressed is the cost.
      Like I said before I have a victrix and it is a really nice bike but the batteries are a ridiculous price, and you can't swap out the battery so it hardly ever gets any use, one simple change to the design would mean I would be riding electric instead of gasoline now, but it sits in my garage doing nothing other than gathering dust.
      So think of this, imagine you had a bike that had a range of 100 miles, but you had very little room for adding extra batteries cos the bike is small, what would be the best way to extend the range using lithium batteries, simple several ways, make available to buy an extended range plug in top box or tank bag or back pack you set into the design a socket that you take you lead from your back pack and plug it into the bike which then allows you to either extend the range or bypass the main battery altogether.
      Not only that but by producing an extender range back pack you could make use of that with all types of bikes even those that don't have removable batteries.
      Might need to produce an upgrade kit depending on the type of bike but it all has potential to make extra money and make people happier with their products, it just needs to be safe and worth the effort carrying it.
      I reckon the average male could easily carry a battery pack on their back that could extend the range of a bike by half the original bikes range but that would need to be tested.
      It also allows for easy charging plus also produce a range of fast or rapid home chargers.
      This posting could go on a lot longer but I think I have outlined a huge potential not only for the bikes these guys produce but systems like I have said could actually go to servicing bikes they don't produce.

    I like the idea of an electric motorcycle but 20 000 € for a bike that is ugly with a poor range, that's not possible... when you know that with 14 300 € you can get a brand new BMW S1000R 2018... While the manufacturers can't make a good looking, 300km (186 miles) range bike with at least 80hp (60kW) for less than 10 000€ (11 500$), most people won't consider buying E-bikes.

    • @Datacube
      @Datacube  6 років тому

      Hello, thank you for your comment. Although the things that you are saying make sense, you are being a bit harsh and unfair to electric motorcycles. ICE bikes had decades to develop, while most of ebike manufacturers haven't even been 10 years around. Also you don't take into consideration the fact that electric motors are more reliable than ICE and offer some performance benefits, as well as lower running costs. Finally, isn't Zero SR good looking?

    • @ahribo9523
      @ahribo9523 6 років тому

      I'm sorry if I sound harsh, english isn't my native language so my vocabulary isn't actually developped. I know that ebikes manufacturers are new and that we can't expect a lot of their products for now (that's why you shouldn't buy ebikes for the moment, which is what I was saying in my first comment). Maybe they are more reliable but who knows ? they are new so we don't have any experience of them. Performance benefits ? Even if ebikes have a great acceleration, they are so expensive that you could buy a more powerfull bike for less. The Zero SR isn't ugly but I personally don't like this futuristic-naked-ish style (and sadly, the Zero SR is the best looking eBike). eBikes is a good idea but it needs a bit of time before being attractive (but that's only my point of view, I respect yours ^^). Moreover, I love my clutch, shifting gears and the sweet sound of the engine. So if I switch for ebikes, it would be reluctantly... except if it's really worth it which is not for the moment...

    • @Datacube
      @Datacube  6 років тому

      As consumers we have to understand that new technology just doesn't fall out of the sky. If companies are putting money into the development of electric bikes, they will have to recoup their investment by selling the products. So suggesting that we shouldn't buy electric motorcycles now is a bit wrong. If no one buys them, then manufacturers will stop developing them. Now speaking of the clutch and shifting gears, we've had a fun conversation with one of our viewers and we prompted him to visit a local ebike dealership and sign up for a test ride. His feedback was more than positive, you can look through the comments. So electric motorcycles on paper and in reality differ greatly. You just have to try them out.

    • @ahribo9523
      @ahribo9523 6 років тому

      Maybe I'd like ebikes but, I'm a college student, I can't afford a 20 000 € bike. I know that the manufacturers need to sell products to make money for the research but I'm not rich, I can't put 20K€ in a prototype-ish bike for one reason ; I don't have 20K€ and if I had those, I would never use them for a bike, electric or not (like most people I think). If you're rich then go ahead and buy a Zero SR, I'm sure it's a very good bike.

      Hello, thanks for the feedback. Many bikes are restoring some of the charge on the go. This generation feature can be used only to restore excess power and cannot work all the way through the ride. You are right, the electric vehicle technology has been around for a long time but it's the batteries that are the weak spot, not the electric motors. Scientists and engineers are struggling to make compact batteries that will last for long and still be able to charge quickly.
